We should not believe - as some scholars do - that Nicander showed such lack of talent as to sign his Alexipharmaca with a defective acrostic. This assumption becomes unnecessary if we accept the emendations to Alex. 266 and 269 proposed by William C. Helmbold and Jean-Marie Jacques. A discussion of this problem is followed by a Polish translation of the passage containing the acrostic.

The article discusses proverb innovations in the aspect of textual criticism. On one hand, their functional specificity allows them to be still considered as fully-featured proverbs, on the other hand, it reveals an array of peculiarities related to modification and/or expansion of lexical composition of the output proverb, which is connected with identification of particular levels of meaning (literal, figurative and situational) by the receiver.

It contains collected informations on the appearance of an idea for a book-comic for children (as told by Makuszyński’s wife – Janina, Marian Walentynowicz, Jan Gebethner), through the actual process of writing, the first edition and post-war issue. Also it discusses drawings from The 120 adventures of Matołek the Billy-Goat which sometimes differ quite significantly depending on the edition.

The Ethiopic martyrdom of Anthony Rawḥ, attested in two relatively ancient manuscripts is a hagiographical text set in the Muslim Arab world. As such, it is an example of the perception that Christian Ethiopia had of the Muslim world at the time. This article offers some amendments to the printed edition and a few general remarks about the place of this text within the Ge’ez literary tradition.

The methodology and practice of Latin text editing is presented in the paper as an example of a humanities scholar’s work that combines scientific effort with artistic activity, including forgery of works by old masters. Part one outlines the methodological situation in textual criticism in the 1960s and 1970s, when the author was a university student and novice researcher. Next, the author considers what caused changes in editing methodology in subsequent decades and, finally, he comments on present-day debates surrounding the role of the academic editor, with a special focus on the interdisciplinary aspects of this issue.

Opis:
Scholarly editing is a highly desirable and practical discipline. Being essential to philology, it now exists in different cultural, technological, economic, and organizational conditions. Obviously, it is possible to separate quintessentially scientific issues from so-called technical problems. Such separation does not demand vast knowledge, which does not interest or concern us, and gives the opportunity to justify potential mistakes. If some scholars’ attitude towards scholarly editing remains unchanged, it will lead us to stagnation and result in the long-lasting absence of unabridged editions of works by Polish classics.

A textual problem from Cicero's oration In defence of Publius Sestius is discussed in order to determine syntactic and semantic consequences of editorial choices. The discussion involves semantic and syntactic properties of Latin past participles within a minimalist setting. A detailed investigation of the passage indicates that a textual variant not accepted by most editors is to be preferred.

On the basis of the Hebrew manuscripts and other ancient textual witnesses, this article singles out and discusses many text-critical and translational issues regarding Psalm 17, dwelling particularly upon vv.11 and 14. For v.11, the author accepts the conjectural reading אִשְּׁרוּנִי עתַָּה סְבָבוּנִ י , “they have advanced/moved against me, now, they have encircled me”. For v.14, the author gives preference to the qere וּצְפוּנְךָ with the collective meaning: “and your protected ones”.

The article analyzes the interrelations between the texts of the Novgorodian‑Sophian group of the first half of the 15th century (Novgorod Karamzin, First Sophian and Forth Novgorod chronicles) on a specific section of the annalistic material. We explore the “links” to some Kievan text in the entries of the late 11th century from the First Sophian Chronicle, their context and probable sources. The compiler of this chronicle has left traces of his activity on early Rus’ history in his drafts (such remarks as “to search in Kievan” and similar) which scholars have considered as evidence of some importance to define the stages of annalistic work of the 15th century in Novgorod and Moscow. It is argued that a set of “links” of the First Sophian was used by the author of the second part of the Novgorod Karamzin Chronicle to fill the gaps in his narrative. However, detailed textual analysis demonstrates the very complicated and clearly later composition in the First Sophian. Therefore both the first and second parts of Novgorod Karamzin Chronicle precede the First Sophian. The paper also pays attention to some aspects of the relations between the Novgorodian‑Sophian group and early Kievan and Novgorod chronicles.

Analiza świadectw greckich, łacińskich, syryjskich, perskich, gruzińskich pozwala na wyodrębnienie wariantów „Tekstu Zachodniego”, które mogą wskazywać na wczesną redakcję poprzedzającą Tekst Aleksandryjski.

Artykuł jest próbą zarysowania naukowego przeznaczenia badań filologicznych oraz ich funkcji społecznej. Na podstawie krytycznych ocen dorobku światowej filologii autor kwestionuje niektóre paradygmaty myślenia o tej dyscyplinie nauki oraz postuluje jej wykładnię, zgodnie z którą zasadniczym celem filologii – jako sztuki akceptacji oraz poszanowania unikalności tekstu będącego efektem cudzego procesu myślowego – jest próba zrozumienia innego.   Artykuł powstał w wyniku realizacji projektu „Redefniowanie filologii”, nr 0031/NPRH2/H11/81/2012.
The article addresses the scholarly aim of philological investigations and their social function. The author considers the critical evaluation of worldwide philological practice, questioning some paradigms of thinking about philology and promoting its definition as an effort to understand the other by accepting and respecting the uniqueness of text.   The article is part of the research project entitled “Redefining Philology” (Contract No. 0031/NPRH2/H11/81/2012).

Edward Stachura spent three years of his life in Lublin. He enrolled at the Catholic University of Lublin in 1957, majoring in French Philology. In 1960 he moved to Warsaw and started coressodnance to Maria Bechczyc-Rudnicka who was a chief editor in local literary newspaper “Kamena”. Stachura published there some of his works. The letters which are stored in Hieronim Łopaciński Public Library in Lublin give us some information about writer’s life which he used to spend “in road” nad his works sent as attachments. We have letters of Stachura but not of Bechczyc-Rudnicka because at the end of his life he decided to burn all letters and photos directed to him. Thats why editors could not collect any dialog of correspondance. The letters have been read from the handwritten manuscripts, typescripts and edited (the language of the letters has not been changed). The letters appear in print for the very first time.

The Hoover Institution at Stanford University holds the largest collection of manuscripts by Leopold Tyrmand in the world. An analysis of the materials stored at the Hoover Institution provides grounds for dissipating some doubts about the authenticity of his Diary 1954. Today, we are certain that Tyrmand’s work is an original diary that had been written in Poland. However, before it was published, it underwent various modifications (in terms of style, composition, and material). A very important issue is the kind of censorship made by the publishing house. The reading of Tyrmand’s letters proves that not all of the modifications were in accordance with his will, and that not all of them were initiated by him. Moreover, readers of the article will learn some facts about Tyrmand’s creative process and different variants of his works.
W Instytucie Hoovera w Palo Alto przechowywana jest największa na świecie kolekcja rękopisów Leopolda Tyrmanda. Analiza tych materiałów daje podstawy do rozwiania pewnych wątpliwości dotyczących autentyczności jego Dziennika 1954. Panuje powszechne przekonanie, iż utwór ten jest oryginalnym dziennikiem, który został napisany w Polsce, co jest zgodne z prawdą. Jednak zanim został opublikowany, przeszedł różnego rodzaju modyfikacje (m.in. stylistyczne i kompozycyjne). Niezwykle ważką kwestią jest charakter zmian, na których zależało przyszłemu wydawcy. Lektura listów Tyrmanda dowodzi, że nie wszystkie modyfikacje były zgodne z jego wolą i że nie wszystkie zostały przez niego zainicjowane.

The aim of this paper is to analyze Zeph. 3,18, one of the most incomprehensible verses in the book. Firstly, the author describes the near context of the verse, then he examines some variants of the Hebrew manuscripts and the ancient versions. In the next section he presents all the possible solutions dividing them into four groups: 1) based on an emendation of the text; 2) based on semantics, 3) based on its syntax, 4) a diachronic solution. In the conclusion, the author suggests four notions to be applied probably to several instances of crux interpretum of the Bible.

Autor na przykładzie recenzowanej książki stara się pokazać szkody, jakie powoduje pisanie prac naukowych pod tezę. Według Oleksija Tołoczki i jego zespołu Kronika halicko-wołyńska (Kronika Romanowiczów) jest źródłem późnym. Jej pisanie rozpoczęto po 1264 r., ostatecznie zaś tekst zredagowano po 1292 r. Znaczna część przeprowadzonej przez kijowskich badaczy analizy materiału źródłowego podporządkowana jest dowiedzeniu powyżej wspomnianej tezy, choć zdarzają się znakomite pod względem jakości opracowania poszczególnych fragmentów Kroniki.
In this review, the author indicates the damage that can be caused by writing scientific texts to prove a preconceived thesis. According to Oleksiy Toločko and his team, The Galician-Volhynian Chronicle (Romanovichi Chronicle) is a late mediaeval source. Their claim that its compilation began after 1264, and that the final text was developed after 1292 is open to question, but a significant part of the analysis carried out by the Kyiv researchers aims to substantiate this thesis. Nevertheless, the text under review contains some high-quality analysis of individual fragments of the Chronicle.
