Opis:
The subject of this paper aims to investigate problems associated with selected examples of terracotta drawn from the wide iconographic range of figurines produced in Egypt during the Graeco-Roman period. It attempts to find an answer to the question of whether, in the case of the categories of figurines and terracotta plaques, there are any associations or correlations with upbringing and education. The author maintains that the terracotta figurines, which are the subject of this paper, could include, among many others, examples evoking patterns of appropriate behaviour. Some figurines also played a significant part in the history of Graeco-Roman Egypt, forming an important source for the promotion of a range of information with a socio-political content.

The group of 17 oil lamps now in the Islamic Art Department collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) was excavated in West Thebes in Upper Egypt by an Metropolitan Museum of Art expedition at the beginning of the 20th century. The assemblage was never fully published (apart from being included in the online MeT Collection database). The present paper documents the material in full, examining the collection and proposing in a few cases a new dating based on parallels from other sites.

The terracotta figurine which is the subject of this paper was found during excavations in Nikonion in 2011. The article seeks to analyse the figurine in order to suggest an origin for the prototype of the terracotta representation, considering that it constitutes a relatively schematic depiction, that it might be late Classical in date judging by the archaeological context.

Between the conservation-restoration of several disciplines like sculpture and that of architecture differences in the application of the general ethical guidelines exist. Because some “objects” like architectural statuary cannot be classified under one specific discipline this paper attempts to outline the parallels between the applicable disciplines and to point out any inconsistencies, thus encouraging an environment in which the cross-pollination of the principles of a minimal, reversible and stable intervention can thrive and bridging the existing gap between the different fields. Two case studies undertaken by KIK-IRPA Brussels of the treatment of architectural statuary from around 1900 in Brussels are used to illustrate some of these aspects.

A terracotta mask discovered at the site of Jiyeh (ancient Porphyreon) in Lebanon, on the Mediterranean coast between Beirut and Sidon, underwent conservation and restoration in 2014. A silicone cast of the object was made as part of the process, which included reconstruction of the losses and final retouch. The state of preservation of the object was assessed during the course of the conservation. A study of the production technique permitted the mask production process to be reconstructed to a large extent.

Opis:
This paper aims at analyzing relations between different types of clay figurines and models found at Tell Arbid, a site in northern Mesopotamia, in the Khabur region. Starting with a presentation of a set of third millennium BC clay objects – including an equid and an anthropomorphic figurines, as well as a wheel model – the author discusses those figurines which were deliberately shaped to fit, or to be combined with, other objects. Analyzing them against the backdrop of analogies from Mesopotamian iconographic sources allowed for defining some functional associations between the representations of males, wheeled vehicles and/or equids. The hypothetically reconstructed sets seem to reproduce scenes well-known from other media. Based on these observations, it is possible better to understand and to interconnect phenomena characteristic for the clay plastic art not just of the site but of the whole region: predominance of equids, prevalence of male over female images and popularity of model vehicles.

The ‘Marea’ project of the University of Warsaw expanded the program to survey and excavation in the northern and eastern parts of the city in order to establish the character and chronology of the structures there. The eastern waterfront was uncovered, along with the adjacent latrines, streets and buildings which are presumed to be residential. The structures which were examined were very regularly formed and involved large-scale earthworks. They were built no earlier than the mid-6th century AD, and, although their purpose sometimes changed, they remained in use until about the mid-8th century AD. Accumulations of Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic date were discovered, including the oldest remains this season, that is, a row of locally-manufactured amphorae serving an unexplained purpose.

The Forcart collection of Ptolemaic, Roman and Late Roman lamps from Fayum is today the largest single-collector Egyptian lychnological corpus owned by a Swiss public institution, the Geneva Museum of Art and History, which acquired it in 1923. The importance of the 145 lamps in this collection is twofold. Firstly, all the artifacts were offered to Max Kurt Forcart by the different directors of excavations operating legally in the Fayum area during the first two decades of the 20th century, giving us a clear—even if generic—finding area, contrary to collections purchased from the various antiquaries. And secondly, even if incomplete compared to the richness and diversity of the Fayum workshops, the chronological and typological range it covers makes it a perfect companion to the only two published and illustrated lamp catalogs of regular excavations made in the area: the early 1900s work of W.M.F. Petrie at Ehnasya and the later investigations by the University of Michigan team at Karanis. Also highlighted are the unique Fayum fashions and approaches to the importation, adoption or rejection of common types found in the Nile Delta, as well as the emergence of typically microregional subtypes as discussed by John W. Hayes.

The paper is an off-shoot of the author's PhD project on lamps from Roman Syria (at the University of Geneva in Switzerland), centered mainly on the collection preserved at the Art Museum of Princeton University in the United States. One of the outcomes of the research is a review of parallels from archaeological sites and museum collections and despite the incomplete documentation i most cases, much new insight could be gleaned, for the author's doctoral research and for other issues related to lychnological studies. The present paper collects the data on oil lamps from byzantine layers excavated in 1932–1939 at Antioch-on-the-Orontes and at sites in its vicinity (published only in part so far) and considers the finds in their archaeological context.

Area 13c, located in the town centre of modern Aswan in Upper Egypt, was excavated in 2005 by the Joint Swiss-Egyptian Mission working at Old Aswan. A sequence of houses from the late Ptolemaic period up to the late Roman period was documented at the site. Among the terracotta objects found in one of the houses, a miniaturised clay scabbard has features typical for the gladius scabbards known from military camps of the first and early second centuries AD from other Roman provinces. Similar terracottas were interpreted as toys, attributes of statues or votive offerings. However, the find context of the object from Syene demonstrates that – together with other clay objects – it belonged to a room decoration or was part of a house altar. Perhaps the object was dedicated as a votive by a soldier, since there are some indications for Roman military presence in this part of Syene.

Terracotta figurines are one of the few iconographical sources available for the study of equids, their breeding and exploitation in Northern Mesopotamia in the third and first half of the second millennium BC. However, the insights offered by this category of artifacts have largely been unrecognized by scholars, what is particularly conspicuous in the Khabur River basin, where equid figurines are very common finds. A detailed analysis of this type of figured documents, especially of the hitherto unpublished assemblage from Tell Arbid, shows that among details marked on the figurines were characteristics of the separate equid species, elements of their equipment and details pointing to certain breeding practices. What makes the equid figurines from the Khabur region even more interesting is the fact that that some of the details were not represented on Near Eastern equid depictions in other media (dorsal and shoulder stripes, strapping of genitalia), have been attested for much later periods (trappers) or have been known solely from written documents (saddle bags, marking of animals).

New Nisa, terracotta fragment, Persepolis, stone reliefs, Achaemenid art
Nowa Nisa, fragment terrakoty, Persepolis, kamienny relief, sztuka Achemenidów
Opis:
In the summer of 2015, within the ancient site of New Nisa (Southern Turkmenistan), a local resident found by chance, in a deep gully made as a result of a heavy rain a terracotta fragment consisting of two pieces joining well to each other, which in the entire (glued) form has 16 cm in height and 18 cm in width. On the obverse of the fragment there is a partial image of a warrior – only the head and the uppermost parts of his spear and bow are preserved. He is shown standing against the background of what is a relief grid, the cells of which are rhomboid. Being produced in a special form-mould, this image is characterized by a fuzzy pattern with smoothed edges – the mould seems to have been used many times. This artifact is currently stored in the Museum of Fine Arts of Turkmenistan (Ashgabat) under the accession number СН15/НН15/Т1. The warrior’s representation on this fragment is of the greatest interest: according to its iconographic realities (“fluted” headdress, a set of weaponry, facial features, hairstyle and beard), it practically coincides with the images of Persian guardsmen on the famous stone reliefs of the first half of the 5th century BC from Persepolis. It is to be noted that the picture from New Nisa is absolutely unique: until now, this is the only known one coming from the territory outside the Achaemenid ceremonial capital. Just one feature distinguishes it from the Persepolitan reliefs, viz. the background in the form of the relief grid of rhombuses. It is, in all probability, a variety of geometric ornament that emerged as a decor on painted ceramic vessels in Iran as far back as the Aeneolithic era and continued to exist there in the Bronze Age, as well as later on – during the Early Iron Age, Achaemenid and Hellenistic times (this ornament was definitely used both in Iran proper and in some neighboring regions, such as Partava/Parthia, Marguš/Margiana and Caucasian Iberia). It cannot be ruled out that the product, the fragment of which was found in New Nisa, had been manufactured in a ceramic workshop located somewhere near Persepolis and somehow connected with the royal court. If not all, then some part of its production was intended to be distributed in the other lands of the Achaemenid Empire, including Parthava, in the northern part of which the ancient city known at present under the name of New Nisa was located. The likelihood that the artifact in question is a later fake looks more than doubtful. Its authenticity is indicated, among other considerations, by the availability of multilayer mouldy growths of different tints – from black to greygreen – on the external chips and over the traces of adhesive (?) on the reverse side, which clearly testify to a very long stay of our fragment in the earth. In addition, its greatly fragmented state and (what is most important!) the fact of its discovery within the territory of the ancient urban settlement, and not on the surface at that, but most likely in the thickness of cultural strata, do not permit, in our conviction, to seriously doubt the authenticity of this specimen of Achaemenid art.

According to extant sources, in the 1840s and 1850s August Potocki bought a group of ceramic objects from two of the most renowned Prussian factories of that time: the first one owned by Tobias Christoph Feilner, in Berlin, the second - by his pupil Ernst March, in Charlottenburg. Most of those objects decorated the private garden by the southern wing of the palace, the others - other parts of the gardens, some of them were positioned in the interiors. The paper, which is a contribution to the elaboration of the collection of ceramic garden sculptures from the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów, presents an overview of the history of both factories in which these purchases were made, and analyses the archival, bibliographic and iconographic sources connected with the collection from Wilanów. The paper is complemented by a catalogue of preserved sculptures and archaeological shards.

This paper discusses the documentary evidence of the last three known bishops from Late Antique and early Islamic Syene/Aswan (5th/6th to 8th/9th cent. ad). All three bear the name of Joseph, two of them, Joseph (II) and (III), are known from already published inscriptions. A new bishop, Joseph (I), occurs for the first time in a Greek ostracon from Elephantine, which is edited here for the first time. A bishop Joseph appears, moreover, on a series of pink clay lamps, which were found, among others, in Adulis (modern Eritrea). A lamp mold with the name of a bishop Joseph, excavated by Charles Clermont-Ganneau on Elephantine, permits the allocation of these Joseph-lamps to Syene as well.
