Opis:
This article presents the preparation of composite casts made using the technology of precise casting by the method of melted models. The composite was reinforced with the ceramic sinter from Al2O3 particle shaped in a printed polystyrene female mould, which was fired together with precured ceramics. The resulting ceramic preform, after being saturated with paraffin and after the filling system is installed, was filled with liquid moulding sand and fired together with the mould. The reinforcement was saturated by means of the counter-pressure exerting action on the metal column, being a resultant of pressures inside and outside the chamber. The preliminary assessment showed no apparent defects in the shape of the cast. The casting was measured and the figures were compared with the dimensions of the matrix in which the reinforcing preform was made, the preform after firing and after saturation with paraffin. The results were presented in a table and dimensional deviations were determined. The composite casting was subjected to metallographic tests, which excluded any porous defects or damage to the reinforcement. It can therefore be said that, according to the predictions resulting from the previous calculations, the pressure values used allowed for complete filling of the reinforcement capillaries. The proposed method is therefore suitable for the preparation of precision composite castings with complex shapes.

Opis:
The work presents the research results of the silumin coat structure applied on the carbidic alloy ductile iron with the metal matrix: pearlitic, bainitic and martensitic. The coats were made in the AlSi5 silumin bath at the temperature tk = 750±5ºC. The holding time of cast iron element in the bath was \tau = 180s. Irrespective of the kind of tested ductile iron the obtained coat consisted of three layers with a different phase composition. The first layer from the cast iron ground “g1” is built from Fe4CSi carbide which contains selected alloy additives of the cast iron. On it the second layer “g1” crystallizes. It consists of the AlFeSi inter-metallic phase which can appear in its pure form or contain a small quantity of the alloy additives of the cast iron. The last external part of the layer “g2” mainly consists of the hypo-eutectic phases of silumin. The AlFeSi inter-metallic phases in the form of free precipitations with a lamellar or faceted morphology can also appear there. These phases also can contain a small quantity of the alloy additives of the cast iron. More than that, in all the layers of the coat there are graphite precipitations. The phenomenon of graphite movement to the coat is caused by intensive dissolving of the cast iron element surface by the aluminum of the silumin bath.

Opis:
The paper presents a research on abrasion resistance of selected construction materials designed for foundry tooling applied in the innovative microwave heating process of moulding and core sands. One of the main selection criteria of the materials for foundry tooling, in particular for models, moulding boards, moulding boxes and core boxes, is their good abrasive wear resistance. Usability of the selected polymeric materials, designed for foundry tooling used in electromagnetic field, is decided also by other evaluation criteria determined in the examinations, like thermal resistance and electrical properties. Abrasion resistance of the selected materials was determined for three grades of the moulding sand matrixes. Combined analysis of the determined abrasion resistance, considering also electrical properties and thermal resistance of the foundry tooling materials, characterising their usability for microwave heating of moulding and core sands, will make possible their systemising with respect to effectiveness and efficiency of the heating process, taking under consideration durability of such foundry tooling to be used in industrial conditions.

This paper presents a new perspective on the issue of reclamation of moulding and core sands. Taking as a premise that the reclamation process must remain on the surface of grains some not separated binding materials rests, it should be chosen the proper moulding sand's composition that will be least harmful for the reclaim quality. There are two different moulding and core sands taken into examinations. The researches prove that a small correction of their compositions (hardener type) improves the quality of the received reclaims. Carried out in this article studies have shown that such an approach to the problem of reclamation of the moulding and core sands is needed and reasonable.

Opis:
The last decade has seen growing interest in professional public about applications of porous metallic materials. Porous metals represent a new type of materials with low densities, large specific surface, and novel physical and mechanical properties, characterized by low density and large specific surface. They are very suitable for specific applications due to good combination of physical and mechanical properties such as high specific strength and high energy absorption capability. Since the discovery of metal foams have been developed many methods and techniques of production in liquid, solid and gas phases. Condition for the use of metal foams - advanced materials with unique usability features, are inexpensive ways to manage their production. Mastering of production of metallic foams with defined structure and properties using gravity casting into sand or metallic foundry moulds will contribute to an expansion of the assortment produced in foundries by completely new type of material, which has unique service properties thanks to its structure, and which fulfils the current demanding ecological requirements. The aim of research conducted at the department of metallurgy and foundry of VSB-Technical University Ostrava is to verify the possibilities of production of metallic foams by conventional foundry processes, to study the process conditions and physical and mechanical properties of metal foam produced. Two procedures are used to create porous metal structures: Infiltration of liquid metal into the mold cavity filled with precursors or preforms and two stage investment casting.

Opis:
One of the purposes of the application of chemically modified inorganic binders is to improve knocking out properties and the related reclamability with previously used in foundry inorganic binder (water glass), which allowing the use of ecological binders for casting nonferrous metals. Good knocking out properties of the sands is directly related to the waste sands reclamability, which is a necessary condition of effective waste management. Reclamation of moulding and core sands is a fundamental and effective way to manage waste on site at the foundry, in accordance with the Environmental Guidelines. Therefore, studies of reclamation of waste moulding and core sands with new types of inorganic binders (developed within the framework of the project) were carried out. These studies allowed to determine the degree of recovery of useful, material, what the reclaimed sand is, and the degree of its use in the production process. The article presents these results of investigation. They are a part of broader research programme executed under the project POIG.01.01.02-00-015/09 'Advanced materials and technologies'.

Opis:
The constant growth of foundry modernization, mechanization and automation is followed with growing requirements for the quality and parameters of both moulding and core sands. Due to this changes it is necessary to widen the requirements for the parameters used for their quality evaluation by widening the testing of the moulding and core sands with the measurement of their resistance to mechanical deformation (further called elasticity). Following article covers measurements of this parameter in chosen moulding and core sands with different types of binders. It focuses on the differences in elasticity, bending strength and type of bond destruction (adhesive/cohesive) between different mixtures, and its connection to the applied bonding agent. Moulding and cores sands on which the most focus is placed on are primarily the self-hardening moulding sands with organic and inorganic binders, belonging to the group of universal applications (used as both moulding and core sands) and mixtures used in cold-box technology.

Opis:
More and more strict regulations, concerning the environment protection, force the producers of materials for foundry industry to develop new products, more friendly for the environment. One of such products are furfuryl resins, which currently have the largest share within the group of no-bake moulding sands. Regulations introduced in the last years in the European Union concerning limitations of a free furfuryl alcohol content (< 25%) in resins as well as pressures to reduce SO2, formaldehyde, phenol, benzene, toluene and compounds from the PAHs group emissions, especially at work stands, caused an appearance of the new generation of furfuryl resins and catalysts (of a decreased sulphur content or even sulphur-free). The analysis of the influence of these new products, applied in the moulding sands with furfuryl resins technology, on the environment and work conditions was performed in the hereby paper.

The temperature of the silumin bath was 750-5 C, and the hold-up time of the cast steel element [...] = 180 s. The absolute thickness of the coat obtained in the given conditions was g = 104 [...] on cast steel GX6CrNiTi18-10 and g = 132 [...] on GX39Cr13. The obtained coat consisted of three layers of different phase structure. The first layer from the base [...] was constructed of the phase AlFe including Si and alloy additives of the tested cast steel grades: Cr and Ni (GX6CrNiTi18-10) and Cr (GX39Cr13). The second layer [...] of intermetallic phases AlFe which also contains Si and Cr crystallizes on it. The last, external layer 'g2' of the coat consists of the silumin containing the intermetallic phases AlFeSi which additionally can contain alloy additives of the cast steel. It was shown that there were no carbides on the coat of the tested cast steels which are the component of their microstructure, as it took place in the case of the coat on the high speed steels.

In the paper, presented are measurements of permittivity (εr) and dielectric loss factor (tgδ) of high-silica moulding sand, determined at 2.45 GHz by perturbation method on a stand of waveguide resonance cavity. Determined were electrical properties of the main component of moulding sands, i.e. high-silica base, critical for their heating kinetics. The measurements were carried-out for six kinds of high-silica sand with diverse grain size distribution. Analysis of the results indicates that both permittivity and loss tangent values are similar for all kinds of high-silica moulding sand. Irrespective of their grain size analysis, neither of the examined sandmixes shows susceptibility to action of 2.45 GHz microwave field. The presented results make a ground for developing a mathematical model of microwave heating of technological systems composed of moulding sand and foundry tooling.

The casting processes using mechanical stirring of composite suspension are considered for the most economical methods for manufacturing of metal matrix composites in the application and industrial practice. The most common problems during the composite suspensions production include: weak wetting between liquid Al alloy and ceramic particles and gassing of composite mixtures resulting with introducing the particles into aluminium alloy and long-term stirring process. The agglomerates and clusters of particles created among others as an effect of gas blisters absorption on the surface of ceramics causes discontinuity of composite structure and thereby they reduce properties of final products. The porosity has disadvantageous effect on mechanical properties of products, it reduces the corrosion and wear resistance, particularly under technically dry friction conditions. Therefore, to produced the casts composite possessed optimal properties, it is necessary their minimal porosity. To obtaining a good high-quality castings, the proper selection of components, particularly the chemical composition of the Al matrix and the kind of reinforcement are necessary. In this paper, the effect of chemical composition of the matrix on AlSi/SiCp+Cp composite structure were presented.

Opis:
The aim of research was creation of a furnace for aluminum alloys smelting “in a liquid bath” in order to reduce metal loss. In the paper, the author demonstrates the results of research on smelting of aluminum alloys in a shaft-reverberatory furnace designed by the author. It has been shown that smelting aluminum alloy in a liquid bath was able to significantly reduce aluminum loss and that shaft-reverberatory design provided high efficiency and productivity along with lower energy costs. Ensuring continuous operation of the liquid bath and superheating chamber, which tapped alloy with the required texture, was achieved by means of the optimal design of partition between them. The optimum section of the connecting channels between the liquid bath of smelting and the superheating chamber has been theoretically substantiated and experimentally confirmed. The author proposed a workable shaft-reverberatory furnace for aluminum alloys smelting, providing solid charge melting in a liquid bath.

Ceramic moulds in the investment casting technology are made by depositing on the wax pattern subsequent layers of a liquid ceramic mass together with a granular matrix. A quality of castings depends on building of individual layers. The results of the ceramic moulds permeability obtained by means of the newly developed measuring method are presented in the hereby paper. Due to the applied solution it is possible to perform measurements also for the first layers which have the decisive influence on a permeability of the whole multilayer ceramic mould. Investigations of the influence of the matrix grain size and annealing temperature on the permeability of ceramic moulds were carried out.

Opis:
The work is a continuation of research concerning the influence of intensive cooling of permanent mold in order to increase the casting efficiency of aluminium alloys using the multipoint water mist cooling system. The paper presents results of investigation of crystallization process and microstructure of multicomponent synthetic hypereutectic alloy AlSi20CuNiCoMg. The study was conducted for unmodified silumin on the research station allowing the cooling of the special permanent sampler using a program of computer control. Furthermore the study used a thermal imaging camera to analyze the solidification process of multicomponent alloy. The study demonstrated that the use of mold cooled with water mist stream allows in wide range to form the microstructure of hypereutectic multicomponent silumin. It leads to higher homogeneity of microstructure and refinement of crystallizing phases of casting.

Opis:
Bimetallic AZ91/AlSi17 samples were produced by compound casting. The casting process involved pouring the AZ91 magnesium alloy heated to 650ºC onto a solid AlSi17 aluminum alloy insert placed in a steel mould. Prior to casting, the mould with the insert inside was heated to about 370ºC. The bonding zone formed between AZ91 and AlSi17 had a thickness of about 200 μm; it was characterized by a non-homogeneous microstructure. Two different areas were distinguished in this zone: the area adjacent to the AZ91 and the area close to the AlSi17. In the area closest to the AZ91 alloy, a eutectic composed of an Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase and a solid solution of Al in Mg was observed. In bonding zone at a certain distance from the AZ91 alloy an Mg2Si phase co-occurred with the eutectic. In the area adjacent to the AlSi17 alloy, the structure consisted of Al3Mg2, Mg17Al12 and Mg2Si. The fine Mg2Si phase particles were distributed over the entire Mg-Al intermetallic phase matrix. The microhardness of the bonding zone was much higher than those of the materials joined; the microhardness values were in the range 203-298 HV. The shear strength of the AZ91/AlSi17 joint varied from 32.5 to 36 MPa.

In the paper presented are results of a research on influence of electrical and physico-chemical properties of materials being parts of multicomponent and multimaterial systems used in foundry practice on efficiency and effectiveness of microwave heating. Effectiveness of the process was evaluated on the grounds of analysis of interaction between selected parameters of permittivity and loss factor, as well as collective index of energy absorbed, reflected and transmitted by these materials. In the examinations used was a stand of wave guide resonance cavity for determining electrical properties and a stand of microwave slot line for determining balance of microwave power emitted into selected materials. The examinations have brought closer the possibility of forecasting the behaviour of multimaterial systems like e.g. model, moulding sand or moulding box in microwave field on the grounds of various electrical and physico-chemical properties. On the grounds of analysis of the results, possible was selecting a group of materials designed for building foundry instrumentation to be effectively used in electromagnetic field.

Within the research, carried-out were examinations of foundry rejects in form of waste moulding and core sands in order to determine effectiveness of the microwave utilization process. Presented are measurements of permittivity and loss tangent that determine behaviour of materials in electromagnetic field. Measurements were performed on a stand of waveguide resonance cavity that permits precise determination of the above-mentioned parameters with the perturbation method. Examination results of five waste moulding sands confirm that effectiveness of microwave utilization depends on electrical properties of the sandmixes (permittivity and loss tangent).
W pracy podjęto badania odpadów odlewniczych w postaci zużytych mas formierskich i rdzeniowych w celu określenia skuteczności procesu mikrofalowej utylizacji.

Opis:
For the reasons of environmental problems connected with the use of furan binders the attention is increasingly paid to self-setting mixtures with alkali resols. A resol binder stabilized with KOH, NaOH is hardened by liquid esters with the formation of alkaline salts. The increase of their concentration affects the shortening of the mixture bench life, it decreases strength, abrasive wear of moulds and cores is growing, and it results in uneconomical dilution of the reclaim with expensive new base sand. Length of life (bench life) of mixtures plays an important role just in manufacture of huge and voluminous moulds and cores in self-setting mixtures. This contribution aims at analyzing the function of reactive alkaline salts in the reclaim, it monitors consequences of its thermal exposure on properties of self-setting mixtures, and it deals with development of methods evaluating its qualities.

Opis:
Cast zinc alloys have similar properties to aluminium alloys. The differences are due to the lower melting point and higher density. Zinc has a density of 7.14 g/cm3, a melting point of 419.5°C and the boiling temperature of 906º C. In the temperature range from 150 to 200°C, zinc has good susceptibility to plastic deformation. It is also resistant to atmospheric factor influence, but is not resistant to acids. The main use of zinc alloy, is the production of thin-walled casts that require high precision. Zinc alloys are also used for die casting moulds, housings and covers as well as a variety of devices that are used in the precision industry, electrical engineering, automotive and construction industry. Properly performed chemical modification leads to improve of properties of the produced castings. Therefore it is very important to know how the cast structure with the change of the chemical composition by adding metallic modifiers to the liquid metal. In this work there was studied the effect of chemical modification of cast zinc alloy on the properties and microstructure of the alloys before and after modification. Modified alloys were prepared by adding modifiers in the range of 0.1% to 1% in form of Ti- Sr and B as aluminium master alloy and then cast into the metal moulds. Next the thermo-derivative analysis was performed of the modified Zn-Al-Cu alloy, the microstructure investigation was carried out using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with EDS X-ray microanalysis usage as well as hardness was measured of the modified Zn-Al-C alloys.
