Aim: The aim of the research is to discuss if the lean thinking methodology may contribute to enhance interdisciplinarity and collaboration in higher education engineering courses, namely when applied to engineering students at a Portuguese Higher Education Technology School. Methods. Lean thinking is an organisational methodology that uses innovation to organise and optimise human activities with the aim of eliminating waste. This methodology can be applied to a wide range of activities envisaging to mainly perform tasks that effectively add value to the related processes. When used in an educational context, this approach may also contribute to identifying which activities successfully contribute to add value to the students’ learning process, as opposed to being ineffective for that aim. Results. Current study focuses on interdisciplinarity through a set of collaborative Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) tasks that were planned, tested and assessed in an engineering Higher Education context. Conclusion. One of the main aspects envisaged through the developed CLIL tasks was to contribute to the enhancement of peer-to-peer collaborative learning in an interdisciplinary context, another was to reflect on reciprocal cooperation methodologies that enhance interdisciplinarity in Higher Education.

There is a growing academic tradition of employing strategies of reflective skills in social work education. Social professions are often dealing with the problems of vulnerability and complexity that exist when encountering clients’ needs. This article arises from the experiences of the author in providing reflective learning to health and social work students in Sweden. This study opens with evoking the concept of knowing and learning. It explores and discusses the epistemological basis of reflective learning to facilitate students’ knowledge creation, clinical reasoning and reflective learning in front-on planning interventions. Further, the study present an example of a reflection scheme matrix applied in the social work and social pedagogy bachelor educational programs at Malmö University to support student’s reflective learning and information gathering while planning social interventions for service receivers. During their reflective reasoning, students are supported in their process of reflection to gain control of the unsorted information and shape a base for their own internal experience while analysing the client’s situation. This article concludes with commentary about reflective learning potential including making sense of real professional situations, meaningful engagements and how to prepare students for professional operationalisation in complex, unpredictable situations.

W referacie przedstawiono refleksje o metodyce pracy dydaktycznej w uczelni akademickiej. Opisano cele i proces pracy dydaktycznej w Małopolskiej Wyższej Szkole Ekonomicznej w Tarnowie oraz dokonano oceny tego procesu.
Various prognoses of trends in people's demand in global economy of XXI century are exceptionally consistent only in one prediction - they prove that the most dynamic demand for different kind of educational services will develop. This phenomenon already appeared in Poland in the XX century. Polish society responded to a political system reform and economic reforms with educational boom. Universities find it difficult to face the challenge of economic boom. A lot of private universities have been founded, the number of students in the state universities has increased, but the number of university teachers remained the same. The tasks are more demanding and more responsible and one cannot ignore them. The paper presents rules, forms and results of teaching performed by an academic teacher holding the position of a professor at the Małopolska School of Economics in Tarnów. The paper raises some questions for a discussion of an improvement of teaching results at the university. Those questions are directed to the management of the school, its "owners" and teaching staff. The paper advances a hypothesis, that MWSE in Tarnów has a good chance and conditions to become an outstanding university as regards the level (quality) of the results. To implement these hypotheses an improvement of the university personnel management is needed. The management of the university personnel, a public institution is more complex and difficult than the management of a company, which products or services have their prices on the market. The paper presented here becomes a contribution to a theory of the management of a public sector institution. This branch of knowledge needs further development.

Remote teaching became one of the key topics in educational research due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our article looks at the other side of the story, i.e., in-person education during the pandemic. This aspect of teaching excellence has been overlooked because it seemed to be thoroughly studied. However, COVID-19 has profoundly changed in-person teaching. In our study, we focus on the Polish medical and technical universities as the studies they offer include solid practical components (labs or clinical classes). Our article examines how in-person classes were administered and organised during three consecutive semesters, starting in the Spring of 2020, when teaching at Polish HEIs was mostly conducted remotely. We build our analysis on internal legal acts issued by rectors and interviews with university staff who oversaw the teaching process. The legal documents describe the procedures related to in-person teaching or frontline teaching in person. The interviews complement this image by providing the rationale behind the regulations, their reception by the students and the faculty, or the backstage of in-person teaching. The LogFrame was applied to provide a conceptual framework to understand how universities could continue providing their services.

Opis:
Generations Y and Z are constantly associated with new technologies, so it causes them to think and process information in a different way than their predecessors.. It is extremely hard to state clearly how many benefits and how many problems modern technology brings to the process of learning. On the other hand, technological development cannot be stopped. Therefore, it is necessary to learn about technology and to accept it without negating other factors influencing modern education, like psychosocial and cultural factors. A good academic lecturer should be aware of this close relationship between new technologies and the way in which modern students are learning. The main goal of this article is to try to build a model of an individual style of academic lecturer teaching at the end of the second decade of the 21st century. In version 2.0, the individual lecturer workshop consists of a) the personality of the lecturer and his/her adaptive skills, b) motivation and attitude, c) knowledge and skills in social competences, d) the quality of interpersonal communication (face-to-face, indirect communication), e) the image of an ideal lecturer, f) tangible and virtual elements of the image, and g) technology used in teaching. The contemporary lecturer creates his/her own style of teaching during classes. Firstly, he/she should adjust the tools for transferring knowledge to the students and their perceptive abilities. Secondly, he/she ought to help them in the final settlement of truth and the reliability of sources of knowledge.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present the principles of remuneration of younger teaching assistants in Polish universities as well as the changes in the amount of their salaries between 1923 and 1934. Theses problems are presented against the background of three key moments in the economic history of the Second Polish Republic, that is, the hyperinflation (1923–1924), the currency reform of Władysław Grabski (1924) and the Great Depression (1929–1934).This article is based on source material and involves the analysis of legal documents from 1923 to 1934. It begins with an outline of the stages of changes in the law concerning academic salaries as well as of the place of the discussed point system between the preceeding multiplier system (1920–1923) and the succeeding fixed rate system (1934–1939). Subsequently, it presents the essence of the point system which was used from 1st October 1923 to 31st January 1934 in fixing salaries. Particular components of the salaries have been classified and distinguished. The first of these, that is, the reference salary, consisted in the basic salary and a regulatory allowance, and the second, that is, the supplementary salary, consisted in an economic support allowance and a household allowance. The reference salary was a salary to which every younger teaching assistant was entitled during the effective period of the point system. The subsidiary salary was a salary to which only some assistants were entitled, namely those who fulfilled certain criteria determined by the law (for example, they had families), or which could be admitted only temporarily. This article discusses the essence and purpose of each of these allowances as well as the mechanism of calculating their amount. The amount of particular components of remuneration was determined by salary points whose value depended on the rhythm of inflation. The value of one salary point was called the multiplier because the real value of the salaries was calculated by multiplying the number of points adscribed to each component by the current value of one salary point. Such a construction of the salary system allowed to react to changes in consumer prices in the economy in a quite elastic way and, in consequence, to better protect the purchasing power of the salary. The changes in the value of the salary point were initially very signficant and in the last months of 1923 they were ordered twice a month. Together with the reform of Władysław Grabski, fluctuations in this area diminished. Changes were usually made every month and they never exceeded a few Groschen each time. When in 1926 the public finances were successfully stabilised, the value of one salary point was anchored at a stable level, which remained unchanged until 1934. The present article also aims at showing the main advantages and disadvantages of the discussed remuneration system as well as the circumstances in which it was ushered in and abolished. The currency reform of 1924, which resulted in the replacement of the German Mark with the Polish Zloty (however, during the transition period both currencies circulated at the same time), has also been taken into account.

Purpose: Our research attempts to understand a change in social sciences’ academics' teaching practices that can be observed during the COVID pandemic and that are predicted after the pandemic. Design: We investigate – in the light of the Blin’s and Munro’s activity theory (2008) – whether the COVID pandemic is a disruptive factor that may lead to the transformation of social sciences academics’ teaching practices. The research instrument was a worldwide survey conducted among social sciences’ academics. Findings: COVID pandemic has already introduced changes into academics’ teaching practices in a form of broad ICT usage as well as initiated changes in the teaching activities design. Research limitations: The number of responses is limited to 382 with only a collection of 77 responses from outside of Europe. We applied a general approach for ICT means not asking respondents about particular ICT tools. COVID as a pandemic evolves continuously indicating the need for further, in-depth research in this field. Practical implications: COVID pandemic might serve as a disruptive factor enforcing further changes in social sciences’ academic teaching practices after the pandemic. Social implications: Our results indicate that the quality of social sciences teaching has worsened during the pandemic and most of the respondents do not predict significant changes in the quality of teaching after the pandemic compared to the quality of teaching before the pandemic. Originality: We contribute by showing that introduction of a new tool (ICT) and modified teaching activity design resulted in a serious alteration of the teaching practice of social sciences’ academics. We did not confirm that COVID disruption was expansive enough to permanently transform teaching practices of social sciences academics, hence we suggest that obstacles to successful incorporation of ICT in teaching practices are still present. We showed that ICT is predicted to be used more frequently rather than before (when it was only utilised as a platform to transfer traditional material) and will not modify the well-established practices referring to instructional tools. Our study suggests that the relation between teacher and teaching activity design is not mediated by ICT tools, which may result in resistance from the teachers.

This paper describes a “distributed method” of introducing the humanitarian engineering principles and concepts to the curriculum of telecommunications at a maritime university. That is by modifying appropriately the syllabi of the telecommunications subjects taught. The propositions made in this area are illustrated by the concrete examples taken from the current Polish Qualifications Framework for the higher education system in Poland. And, for clarity and consistency of presentation, fundamentals and principles as well as a basic terminology and features of this Framework are also highlighted here shortly. Moreover, it has been shown that the approach presented in this paper is more useful compared to a method based on organization of some special courses for students on the humanitarian engineering, in particular when this regards a maritime university.

Managing quality of education is difficult and diversified task. Certainly, at the very center of quality assurance is experience that students and graduates get throughout their education course. One of the factors influencing these experiences are teaching methods. The objective of the paper is to assess the experience of Workplace Safety and Hygiene master program students of with regard to teaching and learning methods and Industry 4.0 readiness. The objective is realized through interpretation of the survey results that was made within MSIE4.0 project among the students of different industrial engineering master programs. Additionally, the program and courses documentation is interpreted in accordance to the 'LOVE' model approach to assess education experience. The sample of the survey is based on MSc students of Workplace Safety and Hygiene that are held at Częstochowa University of Technology. As the study shows, there are some drawbacks of the program with regard to immersive approach to learning and more active students engagement. The readiness to Industry 4.0 requirements is not really visible and some purposeful actions should be made in order to make the program part of activities addressing this economic and social challenge.
