This paper reports on two ways in which success and failure can be operationalized and quantified in a non-institutional L2 learning context such as language tandem setting. We draw on the SITAF database, where we gathered 25 hours of video-recorded conversations held by 21 pairs, each consisting of a native speaker of English and a native speaker of French. The tandems performed collaborative tasks in both languages, thus giving each participant ample opportunity to be both the ‘expert’ and the ‘novice’ (learner) part of the dialogue. The tandem partners met regularly and autonomously outside of the recording sessions, and making progress in their L2 was one of their declared goals. Two possible measures of success in achieving this goal are: (1) the quality and quantity of learner uptake which followed the expert’s corrective feedback (CF) during the recorded conversations. Significant differences between the two L1 groups were observed: while 52% of the CF given by the native French speakers met with total uptake, over 52% of the English CF generated no uptake at all; (2) the participants’ own narratives of progress, as both the experts and the learners, obtained through questionnaires they filled out at the end of the program. Our study aims to contribute to the discussion on the stakes of successful L2 informal learning (with a focus on the acquisition of L2 pronunciation) by adopting a perspective which combines learners’ spoken output data and learners’ perceptions of their own language learning activity.

This paper presents research on the deposition of an indium tin oxide (ITO) layer which may act as a recombination layer in a silicon/perovskite tandem solar cell. ITO was deposited by magnetron sputtering on a highly porous surface of silicon etched by the metal-assisted etching method (MAE) for texturing as nano and microwires. The homogeneity of the ITO layer and the degree of coverage of the silicon wires were assessed using electron microscopy imaging techniques. The quality of the deposited layer was specified, and problems related to both the presence of a porous substrate and the deposition method were determined. The presence of a characteristic structure of the deposited ITO layer resembling a "match" in shape was demonstrated. Due to the specificity of the porous layer of silicon wires, the ITO layer should not exceed 80 nm. Additionally, to avoid differences in ITO thickness at the top and base of the silicon wire, the layer should be no thicker than 40 nm for the given deposition parameters.

Artykuł prezentuje założenia projektu INT128: „Edukacja językowa dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym i wczesnoszkolnym. Niemiecki i Polski jako język obcy. / Frühkindliche Sprachvermittlung. Deutsch bzw. Polnisch als Fremdsprache”, realizowanego w Programie Współpracy Interreg VA Niemcy/Meklemburgia-Pomorze Przednie/Brandenburgia/Polska w obszarze celu „Europejska Współpraca Terytorialna” Europejskiego Funduszu Rozwoju Regionalnego (EFRR). Głównym celem projektu jest stworzenie dodatkowych możliwości nauki języka oraz poznanie kultury kraju sąsiedniego, zgodnie z osią priorytetową programu Interreg VA: „Edukacja” oraz celem nadrzędnym: „Uczenie się przez całe życie”. Projekt ma również na celu pogłębienie współpracy pomiędzy wszystkimi partnerami projektu oraz instytucjami edukacyjnymi w Niemczech i w Polsce. Dla zwiększenia efektywności nauki języków obcych na poziomie regionalnym, wspólnie z nauczycielami reprezentującymi partnerów projektu, przygotowane zostały materiały do nauki języka polskiego i języka niemieckiego jako języków obcych dla dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym i wczesnoszkolnym. Aby poprawić współpracę i wyniki nauczania, sale w szkołach i przedszkolach zostały wyposażone w sprzęt multimedialny do nauczania języków obcych. W ramach projektu podejmowane są dodatkowe działania mające na celu uzupełnienie oferty spotkań transgranicznych i usunięcie bariery językowej. Projekt jest kontynuacją projektu INT-10-0043 „Polsko-Niemieckie Centrum Edukacji i Komunikacji Młodzieży w nadodrzańskich gminach Passow i Pinnow oraz gminach Chojna, Gryfino, Kołbaskowo, Stare Czarnowo i Wałcz” oraz projektów z Funduszu Małych Projektów.
The article presents the assumptions of the project INT128: “Language teaching for children of preschool and early school age. German and Polish as a Foreign Language // Frühkindliche Sprachvermittlung. Deutsch bzw. Polnisch als Fremdsprache”, which is carried out within the Interreg VA cooperation program Germany/Mecklenburg-Vorpommern/Brandenburg/Poland in the target area “European Territorial Cooperation” of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The main objective of the project is to create additional opportunities for learning languages and getting acquainted with the culture of the neighboring country in accordance with the priority axis “Education” of the Interreg VA program and the overall objective “Lifelong Learning”. The project also aims to strengthen cooperation between all partners and educational institutions in Germany and Poland. In order to increase the effectiveness of language learning at the regional level, materials for teaching Polish and German as a foreign language to preschool and early school-age children were developed together with teachers from the project partners. To improve cooperation and learning outcomes, classrooms in schools and kindergartens were equipped with devices for language teaching. Under the project, additional measures will be taken to supplement the offer of cross-border meetings and eliminate the language barrier. The project is a continuation of INT-10-0043 “German-Polish Youth Education and Communication Center in the Municipalities of Passow and Pinnow on the Odra River and the Municipalities of Chojna, Gryfino, Kołbaskowo, Stare Czarnowo and Wałcz” and projects from the Small Projects Fund.

Heavy agricultural trailers can be equipped with a three-axle chassis with a tandem axle set at the rear and one mounted on a turntable at the front. In such trailers, selection of the distribution of braking forces that meet the requirements of the EU Directive 2015/68, with regard to braking, largely depends on the type of tandem suspension used. The requirements for brake force distribution in agricultural trailers of categories R3 and R4 are described. On this basis, a methodology for calculating the optimal linear distribution of braking forces, characteristic of agricultural trailers with air braking systems, was developed. An analysis of the forces acting on a 24-tonne three-axle trailer during braking was performed for five different suspensions of the rear tandem axle. An optimization algo-rithm using the quasi Monte Carlo method was described, on the basis of which a computer program for selection of the linear distribution of braking forces was developed. The calculations were made for an empty and loaded trailer with and without the weight of the tandem suspension. The most uniform distribution of braking forces was obtained for two leaf spring with dynamic equalization and air suspension, in which the ratio of the braking force of the tandem axle and the total braking force varied between 22.9% and 25.5% for the different calculation variants. A large variation in the braking force distribution was achieved for the two leaf spring suspension, in which the ratio of tandem axle braking force and the total braking force ranged from 2.7% to 6.4% for the leading axle and from 27.8% to 36.2% for the trailing axle. The presented calculation methodology can be used in the initial phase of the design of air braking systems for three-axle agricultural trailers.

Background Chemotherapy drugs are widely used to treat cancer, but their active compounds represent a danger for workers who could be exposed to them. However, they aren’t yet included in directive CE No. 1272/2008 and the European Biosafety Network has only recommended a limit value of 100 pg/cm2 for surface contamination. Thus, it is crucial to assess surface contaminations in healthcare environments. Currently, the technique of choice is surface wipe test combined with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to achieve high sensibility. Material and Methods A campaign involving Careggi University Hospital (Florence, Italy) was performed from January 2020 to December 2021, collecting 1449 wipe samples between administration units, preparation unit, and personnel gloves. From the obtained data, the 90th percentile was calculated for 30 antiblastic drugs and proposed as surface exposure levels (SELs); while from data concerning personnel glove contamination, weekly contamination was estimated. Results In the 2-year period only 417 wipe samples were found positive (28.8%), the majority of which regard samples coming from administration unit bathrooms. The proposed SELs are almost all <100 pg/cm2, except for few drugs which produce higher contamination on bathroom surfaces. Also, the estimation of pharmacy personnel’s glove contamination highlighted very low results (ng/week). Conclusions Deeply established protocols and procedures for safe handling of ADs allow for obtaining excellent cleaning results and thus a safer work environment, however, the risk of cytostatic contaminations cannot be avoided in healthcare workplaces, and thus a harmonization of classification and labeling of chemotherapy drugs throughout the European Union should be done.

Explosive reactive armour (ERA) consists of an explosive sandwiched between two metal plates fitted on armoured vehicles to enhance their protection. To defeat an ERA mounted vehicle, its ERA must be neutralized first. A precursor fitted in a TANDEM warhead is used for this purpose in two modes. One is to detonate the ERA and the other is without detonation. This paper presents work performed on the ability of light-weight materials to neutralize the Kontakt-5 ERA without detonation. The precursor performing in this manner is known as a non-initiating precursor (NIP). Eight experiments were performed with aluminium, Teflon® and perspex as liners, against Kontakt-5 ERAs at about 90º and 30º inclination. In five of these experiments, the ERA did not detonate, however in three experiments it did detonated. In all of the experiments the precursor over-performed, producing a prominent hole in the target larger than that predicted by simulation. The over-performance was balanced by decreasing the angle of attack. These experiments demonstrated that an NIP depends strongly upon the ERA as well as on the angle of attack. The overall conclusion from this work is that an NIP is a promising technique to defeat a specific ERA without detonation.

The aim of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of tandem classrooms in promoting intercultural communicative competence by comparing the competence of students before and after participation in tandem classes. This research is based on the descriptive statistics from a survey administered at a university in South Korea. The survey was conducted in 2016 during the second semester, and it used students who participated in tandem classrooms by employing a questionnaire to measure the effectiveness of the tandem classrooms in relation to intercultural communicative competence and the students’ perception of their own competence after completing the tandem classes. The result of the research shows that unlike the initial expectations, there is no meaningful sign that the surveyed students have developed intercultural communicative competence, which means that tandem classrooms did not actively help students improve this competence. In this study, an in-depth interview with students was also conducted in 2019 to find out why such a result occurred. Although tandem classrooms would be highly valuable as a language learning method, the approach may require redesigning and reimplementation in great detail to become a method for developing intercultural communicative competence. Therefore, this study highlights the underlying need for a revised curriculum for students attending tandem classrooms.

Opis:
Purpose: Due to an increase in a number of bridges being constructed, scour depth around bridge piers is gradually being recognized as one of the possible reasons for bridge failure. According to [1] about 53% of bridge failures in the US were caused due to floods and corresponding scour in the rivers. Lots of work has been carried out around the single pier but in the case of group piers, the work is very less. Hence, it becomes necessary to calculate the actual scour depth around the bridge piers considering the close location of bridges as well. Design/methodology/approach: Recognizing the need for research in this direction, an experimental study was planned and conducted in the Hydraulics Laboratory of Civil Engineering Department of National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra, India. Experiments were conducted in a standard recirculating tilting bed water flume 15 m long, 0.4 m wide, and 0.60 m deep. The orientation of more than one pier, namely Tandem pattern was employed for the work. Two pier models, 62 mm and 42 mm diameter were used for the experimental study. The mobile bed used in the experiments had an average mean size, d50 = 0.23 mm, 0.30 mm and 0.50 mm. Findings: The outcomes of the ANN function and M5 model analysis have been used to compare with experimental results. From the earlier studies, it was concluded that, when the clear spacing between the pier models was greater than 0D the scour depth around the piers increase with a rapid rate. However, in the case of modelling techniques, M5 models show higher predictive accuracy than ANN models. Research limitations/implications: It is a significant area of research. However, the present study has been a time and facility- constrained study. Therefore, there is a large scope to conduct further studies on the subject, Different pattern i.e. Side by Side; Staggered and Group of piers can be adopted for further investigations. Originality/value: Sufficient work has been done by number of researchers around the single bridge pier. But due to rapid urbanization a number of bridges constructed in close proximity to each other which affects the scour depth of each other. Modelling techniques used in hydraulic engineering are not always effective in practice. The present study discusses the effect of spacing on scouring around piers in a tandem arrangement using experimental as well as modelling techniques. To predict the scour depth of the Tandem arrangement 89 laboratory data sets have been used.

Opis:
A perspective way of oil wells operation is to use sucker rod pumps, in combination with oil-gas jet pumps. Placing a jet pump above the dynamic level in the well and operating it simultaneously with the sucker rod pumps allows to stabilize the work of the rod pump, avoid fluctuations of the dynamic level and facilitate the rise of the production liquid to the surface due to the reduction of the density of the mixed flow after the jet pump. In order to implement such oil-gas jet pump in oil wells that are operated by sucker rod pumps, it is necessary to determine their operating modes and choose the most effective among them. A methodology for calculating the operation mode of such well was created that allows determining the efficient location of jet pumps in oil wells and their geometry. When developing this methodology two conditions were taken as a main aim: the whole amount of free gas, which enters the casing annulus of the well, must pass through the oil-gas jet pump and to reach the maximum possible decreasing of the string load. For the 753-D oil well in Dolyna Oil Field calculated efficient operation mode shows the possibility to decrease string load by 26%, reduce electricity consumption and, respectively, investments in oil extraction.

In this paper, a new three-dimensional vehicle with tandem axels at the rear is developed to determine dynamic response of bridge deck under load applying truck. The vehicle is modeled by a three-axle dynamic system with 9 degrees of freedom to accurately simulate the disposition and the intensity of loads on the bridge deck. The bridge deck is modeled by a thin, orthotropic, multi-span plate. The road surface irregularities are modeled by a random function characterized by a spectral roughness coefficient and power spectral density. The modal method is used to solve the equation of motion of the bridge deck. Equations of motion of the vehicle are obtained using the virtual work principle. The coupled equations of motion vehicle/bridge deck are integrated numerically by Newmark’s method. A computational algorithm in FORTRAN is then elaborated to solve the integrated equations of motion in a decoupled, iterative process. A numerical example of an orthotropic, three-span bridge deck, excited by a 9 degree of freedom truck is presented. The resulting distribution of the Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF) on the bridge deck does not reflect any particular trend, because high values can be obtained at points where the vertical displacement is small. The DAF is significant only under the interaction force. Thus, the road surface roughness was shown to have a significant influence on the dynamic vehicle/bridge deck interaction forces.

This paper reports on crossing borders virtually via an e-Tandem scheme and presents the findings of a study, in which students of English from an Austrian university were paired with students of German from the UK and the USA. Drawing on data from 19 in-depth interviews, the study aims to identify links between e-Tandem language learning and foreign language enjoyment (FLE) (Dewaele & MacIntyre, 2014, 2016). A category-based qualitative text analysis (Kuckartz, 2014) revealed that a majority of the interviewees felt e-Tandem language learning contributed to their FLE. Furthermore, a range of reasons underlying students’ perceived enjoyment of learning a language in Tandem emerged: having authentic conversations in the target language with L1 (first language) users (Dewaele, 2018), perceiving each other as cultural mediators and a difference from language classroom contexts on the level of power relations, which made students feel more at ease. Helping each other, receiving one-on-one feedback and perceiving improvement in their linguistic mastery were furthermore mentioned as factors they felt boosted their enjoyment and so was developing friendships with L1 users. According to the interviewees, these aspects specifically increased their interest and enjoyment in using and learning the language and their eudaimonic happiness. The findings demonstrate that e-Tandem language learning can be a resource to enhance perceived enjoyment in foreign language learners at tertiary level and they illustrate that social and private components of FLE seem to be interlinked.

Opis:
Media literacy is one of the basic elements of a foreign language teacher’s workshop. Foreign language teaching recommends using media in the classroom not only because it facilitates learning and teaching, but also because it fosters learner autonomy, stimulates creativity and lowers the affective filter. Taking this into account, the authors consider how to develop the media competence of future teachers of English and German as foreign languages from both theoretical and practical perspectives. In the empirical part of the paper the authors present the aims, participants, stages and results of an e-tandem project that targeted a group of Polish and German students.
