The thesis of a symbolic significance of space for a particular community underscores the integrating role of place as a cultural value. The author analyses the connection between the space of French suburbs and the identity of their inhabitants, especially those of immigrant extraction. Therefore, she refers to selected texts of the rich output of French hip-hop artists. She places the pieces in the context of the responds given the French of immigrant roots surveyed in 2003. The analysis of the works of the French rappers demonstrates that their texts express a strong identity with the place of origin and residence built on cultural separateness and, simultaneously, on a strong feeling of social homogeneity of the quarter, which is an additional integrating factor.

The article discusses the problem of growing depopulation of large cities in Poland resulting from demographic changes, migrations in particular. The author focuses on the process of moving away from cities, and the main goal is to show the influence such migrations exert on Polish suburbs. In addition, the article elaborates on possible evaluations of the phenomenon of urban depopulation: Is it to be seen as something negative or neutral? Existing research shows that the urbanization of Poland (i.e. the percentage of Poles living in urban areas) has been decreasing in recent years. Researchers interested in this phenomenon conclude that it is a clear symptom of suburbanization.
W artykule podjęto problem narastających procesów depopulacyjnych w dużych Polskich miastach jako skutek zmian demograficznych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zjawisk migracyjnych. Skoncentrowano się na przemieszczeniach z dużych miast, a za cel przyjęto ukazanie wpływu migracji na kształtowanie się strefy podmiejskiej. W artykule postawiono także pytanie badawcze, czy miasta depopulacyjne to zjawisko negatywne, czy neutralne, które zachodzi. Jak pokazują badania urbanizacja w Polsce mierzona udziałem ludności miejskiej, w ostatnich latach wykazuje spadek, a badacze tego zjawiska stwierdzają, że jest to wyraźny przejaw suburbanizacji terenów podmiejskich.

The article applies to three autobiographical novels written in the 1980s and 1990s by citizens of France, second-generation Algerian immigrants. The authors of these novels widely relate to their own experience of life in the suburbs of French cities. The protagonists are young people who on the one hand feel French and demand acceptance and on the other experience acts of discrimination. Moreover, their relationship to traditional Algerian culture is also ambivalent. The place with which they identify themselves is not France, in spite of the citizenship, nor Algeria, in spite of the origin, but their own district, which is a place where they live their everyday life. The author of the article analyzes the chosen novels through the perspective of the republican model of integration which excludes recognition of ethnic origin of the citizens. The article, referring to M. Foucault’s theory of heterotopia, argues that although the novels in question sensitize French readers to the various social questions, they, paradoxically, support the typical thinking of the republican model.

This article presents the results of research into the sense of connection felt by the inhabitants of the Abisynia housing estate in Poznań for their place of residence. In the interwar period, Abisynia represented a typical affluent suburb of a large city. Today it is surrounded by apartment buildings. The research was conducted using a modification of Florian Znaniecki’s methodology, which was first applied in 1928. The methodology and results are presented in comparison with Znaniecki’s classical research. New methodological elements were employed, and the text indicates how they affected interpretation of the social processes taking place in a contemporary city. The inhabitants of Abisynia exhibited a very positive self-stereotype in their nearly enthusiastic appraisal of themselves and their neighbors. They were less tolerant of other city dwellers and of the city authorities. The contemporary inhabitants of Abisynia believe themselves to be a part of a more local social organization, of a type promoted by Znaniecki nearly one hundred years ago.

The article aims to identify areas of historical, cultural, and landscape values that are located in the suburban area of Warsaw and which may play an essential role in stabilizing the urban ecosystem of Warsaw in the future. Since it turns out that the most effective form of preserving these values is to take them under legal protection, the article shows good and bad practices in this area, identifying the most significant threats and indicating opportunities and scenarios worth considering for the future. Finally, the purpose of the article is to draw attention to the importance of spatial and scenic connections, emphasizing the importance of the surrounding landscape, which was once an immanent feature of, e.g. suburban estates. The hypothesis is that in the face of progressing climate change and melting natural resources, it is worth paying attention to the importance of all urban ecosystem elements, even smaller ones, because they are a component of a larger whole and are required for ecological balance. Existing resources should be strengthened and protected, and new places for protection should be sought. Such sites may be the former foregrounds, the immediate surroundings of monuments, which in the past functioned as larger compositions and should be protected as such.

large cities such as Warsaw. The functional and spatial changes in the neighbouring areas of the Polish capital perfectly illustrate what is also happening in other metropolises. Unfortunately, not only the main city itself but also the neighbouring municipalities experience investment pressure. This process consumes more and more areas and favours their irrational spatial and functional development, which has its negative environmental effects. In the face of threats that result from climate change, instead of looking for solutions that are logistically and technologically complicated, resources that are still available around large cities can be used. Undoubtedly, in addition to natural landscape areas, such areas may be agricultural areas. Instead of re-qualifying them, their potential can be used in creating an eco-resilient suburbs system, which is also the ecological base of the main city. The aim of the article is to draw attention to the condition, resources and adaptation possibilities of rural areas in the suburbs of Warsaw, which, like other large Polish cities, needs new ecological solutions. The study used the Statistics Poland (Główny Urząd Statystyczny) data and conclusions resulting from the literature review on the studied issue, as well as analysis of planning documents.

Bultzatzen to program społeczno–edukacyjny dla zróżnicowanych pod względem kulturowym grup młodych ludzi w wieku od 12. do 16. roku życia, realizowany w rejonie Astrabudúa na przedmieściach Erandio w Kraju Basków. Projekt Bultzatzen (w języku Basków oznacza „nacisk”) powstał w latach 2004–2005, jest to innowacyjne podejście do reagowania na ryzyko niepowodzeń szkolnych i wykluczenia społecznego często doświadczanych przez okoliczną młodzież. Ta wielopoziomowa interwencja obejmuje rodzinę, społeczność lokalną, szkołę, Radę Miasta, uniwersytet i inne instytucje. Program okazał się skutecznie podwyższać aspiracje i standardy edukacyjne; sprzyja też większej spójności społeczności lokalnych. Organizacja zgłaszająca: Uniwersytet Deusto, Wydział Pedagogiki Społecznej i Wielokulturowości, Hiszpania.
Bultzatzen is a socio-educational programme for culturally diverse young people aged 12-16 years that takes place in the neighbourhood of Astrabudúa in the suburbs of Erandio in the Basque Country. Bultzatzen (in Basque ‘pushing’) came into being in 2004-05 and proposes an innovative response to the situation regarding the risk of academic failure and social exclusion in which the young people of the neighbourhood fi nd themselves. There is multi-level intervention that involves family, the community, schools, the Town Council, the University and other institutions. The programme has been effective in raising aspirations and educational standards, as well as promoting increased community cohesion.

W artykule starano się przedstawić powiązania pomiędzy zmianami liczby bezrobotnych w sześciu największych miastach w Polsce oraz odpowiadających im obszarach podmiejskich i peryferyjnych. W przeprowadzonych analizach wykorzystano modele VAR. Wyniki wskazują, że największą elastycznością charakteryzowała się liczba bezrobotnych w miastach, a najmniejszą – na obszarach peryferyjnych. Długookresowe powiązania liczby bezrobotnych zachodziły jedynie pomiędzy częścią miast i ich suburbiów. Silniejsze związki o charakterze krótkookresowym stwierdzono pomiędzy miastami i ich suburbiami, ale wyniki były zróżnicowane w zależności od miasta.
The paper aims to show the relationship between changes in the number of the unemployed in the six largest cities in Poland and the corresponding suburban and peripheral areas. The performed analyses use VAR models. The results indicate that the number of the unemployed is the most flexible in cities, and the smallest in peripheral areas. Long-term relationships in unemployment occurred only between some cities and their suburbs. Stronger short-term relationships were found between cities and their suburbs, but the results varied depending on the city.

The article aims to present the research results on the possibility of using alternative energy sources and pro-ecological solutions as a tool supporting the protection of the cultural and natural landscape of the suburbs of Warsaw. Near Warsaw, there are individual objects or complexes that constitute this area’s cultural identity. The difficulty is to adapt them to current energy standards without interfering with their original material, especially concerning wooden buildings. Instead of subjecting them to thermal modernization, it is worth considering alternative solutions, such as photovoltaics. A wooden manor house in Warsaw- -Białołęka was selected for detailed research. The study has shown that the optimal use of 26 photovoltaic modules that were adopted with a total installation capacity of 7.54 kWp will be optimal for this type of edifice. The simple payback time of the investment will be about ten years. To eliminate the negative aesthetic effect of the installation, panels in the appropriate color should be used, or the use of photovoltaic tiles should be considered, although the investment costs will increase. The study has shown indisputable benefits, including economic ones, resulting from the solutions used.

The problem of pock moving out finny city centers, which is first of all due to overpopulation and pollution, leads to actions aiming at finding alternative areas for the development of the housing environment. The uncontrolled extension of cities has a vital influence over both the housing environment and economics, as it causes the rise of the costs of building houses and roads, stocking up on water, the sewage system, etc. It is also often the case that, as a result of the extension of cities, vast areas of most fertile grounds are unnecessarily and thoughtlessly wasted. That is why it is absolutely essential to take up well - thought - out steps to make use of the potential of city suburbs as housing areas. These are only possible when all the people who have an impact cii city extension, such as town planners, architects, ecologists, sociologists and inhabitants themselves, stay in close cooperation. it was no later than during the industrial Revolution that "the suburb" became home for the bourgeoisie, who wanted to escape from the hardships of city life. Nowadays the suburb, as a consciously chosen housing area, changes the shape of the modern housing organism. It offers more space and a much better quality of the environment. The countries where the ecological consciousness reached a high level have already made efforts towards using suburbs as most convenient locations for ecological housing estates. What seems to be a perfect example of such estates is an ecological housing estate called Nieuwland in Amersfoort (Netherlands). The reason why a description of the mentioned above estate is included in the following publication is to explain the way of thinking which led to locating the estate in the suburbs and present the factors which determinate its ecological character.

Research focuses on potential existence of relation between the quality of life of rural respondents (rated subjectively) and the level of physical activity and the amount of time spent on it. Additionally, it investigates to what extend the respondents lead healthy lifestyle which includes healthy diet. Diagnostic survey is a research method that was applied. The techniques used include: international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) test, Batterie rapide d’efficience frontale (BREF) test – verifies quality of life and interviews with original questionnaire (developed by authors). The research shows that rural areas inhabitants are aware of factors that determine people’s health. At the same time they seem not to be aware of negative influence of using stimulants on their health. The remarkable thing is that respondents point out how important physical activity is as an element determining well-being. After conducting the research, a leading conclusion emerges that there is a need to formulate an educational program for rural residents, indicating the proper implementa- tion of individual elements of the lifestyle.
Problematyka badań dotyczy poszukiwania związku pomiędzy jakością życia ocenianą subiektywnie przez badanych a poziomem aktywności i czasem, jaki wykorzystują na nią mieszkańcy wsi podwarszawskich oraz na ile badani realizują tzw. zdrowy styl życia w zakresie korzystania z używek i sposobu odżywiania się. Zastosowaną metodą badawczą jest sondaż diagnostyczny. Wykorzystana technika to zwarty test international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) badający aktywność fizyczną, test Batterie rapide d’efficience frontale (BREF) weryfikujący jakość życia oraz wywiad autorskim kwestionariuszem wywiadu. Wyniki badań wśród mieszkańców podwarszawskich wsi wskazują na ich wiedzę w zakresie znaczenia czynników determinujących zdrowie. Jednocześnie badani nie dostrzegają negatywnego wpływu używek. Znaczące jest wskazywanie przez respondentów znaczenia aktywności ruchowej w kontekście utrzymania zdrowia. Opis:
Celem artykułu jest prezentacja kina beur, które jest niemal zupełnie nieobecne w polskim dyskursie filmoznawczym. W pierwszej części autorka zaprezentuje etymologię terminu beur, która będzie pomocna dla zrozumienia cech charakterystycznych nowej estetyki filmowej we francuskim przemyśle kinematograficznym. Następnie przedstawieni zostaną pionierzy kina beur, a także współcześni twórcy, z uwzględnieniem podziału na różnorodność poruszanej przez nich tematyki.
The purpose of this article is to present the beur cinema, which is almost nonexistent in Polish film discourse. First, the author presents the etymology of the term beur. This will enable an understanding of its characteristics as a new aesthetic in the French cinematographic industry. Then the beur cinema pioneers are introduced, along with contemporary authors, including a recognition of the diverse themes they introduced.
