Opis:
The idea of students giving official grades to teachers is new in the centuries-old history of education. Today, the technical side of its implementation is usually discussed, while the purposefulness and usefulness are rarely in focus. The article provides a justification for the view that the student survey is a poor measuring instrument and it is used contrary to its intended use. First, it is unclear what exactly it measures, but it does so imprecisely as there are many known factors that are potentially sources of bias. Second, only to a small extent is the survey actually used to improve the quality of teaching. A separate argument was also given for the opinion that student evaluation of classes not only brings little benefit, but also causes some harm.

Opis:
The choice of field of study is influenced by many factors. This text focuses on the factors that influence students to choose teaching as a field of study, and students’ attitudes towards the teaching profession expressed by their motives for choosing this field. Based on selected factors (prestige of the profession, social importance of the profession, interest in working with children, etc.), the motives that played a role in choosing the field of study are identified among the interviewed students. The author did not focus solely on the Czech territory, but also carried out a research/survey of Polish students in the same field. The main goal of the research was to analyse the attitudes of Czech and Polish students toward the teaching profession. The work follows the research investigation of prof. PhDr. Marta Klímová DrSc. from 1973, who carried out her investigation among students of the teaching programmes. Parts of Klímová’s questionnaire were also used in the survey, but these parts were updated due to changed conditions in education as well as some political changes. The research group consisted of Czech students at Masaryk University of the third-year bachelor’s studies Kindergarten Teacher Training and the third and fifth years of the study programme Primary School Teacher Training; and Polish students at the University of Silesia of the third-year bachelor’s degree and second-year master’s degree Early School Education and Pre-School Education.

Opis:
The present paper concerns the topic of mentoring in the context of pre-service teacher education. Mentoring refers here to assistance or guidance provided by a school-based teacher who agrees to mentor a student teacher during her or his practicum. More specifically, the paper examines if mentoring can be recognized as a form of professional development for mentor teachers. While a great deal of literature has looked at the benefits student teachers gain from mentoring, an ongoing line of research has acknowledged that teachers in their roles as mentors also can benefit professionally from the experience of mentoring. However, the bulk of this research comes from the Anglo-Saxon context and it cannot be assumed that the experiences of British, American or Australian teachers are shared by teachers in Poland. The aim of the present study then was to identify the ways in which Polish teachers of English who have undertaken the role of a mentor develop professionally through mentoring. The instrument used was a web-based questionnaire. The main findings show that mentor teachers gain professionally primarily through the process of mentoring—being a mentor enhances their capacity for self-reflection and positively impacts their leadership skills, confidence as a teacher, willingness to self-develop, as well as their enthusiasm and commitment to teaching. On the other hand, mentors do not feel they learn directly from student teachers, although, in general, they recognize cooperation with student teachers as an inspirational and positive experience.

Cooperative approach to teaching and learning

views on the experience of the integrated teaching
Opis:
The benefits of cooperative approaches to teaching and learning are extensively documented (Blatchford et al. 2003; Dillenbourg and Schneider 1995; Hmelo-Silver et al. 2013; Johnson and Johnson 1990, 1991 1994; Neber, Finsterwald and Urban 2001; Rojas-Drummond and Mercer 2003; Ruys et al. 2010; Sapon-Shevin 2004; Slavin 1995; van Aalst 2013; Veenman et al. 2000, 2005; Vygotsky1978), but in spite of this, such methods appear to be largely under-utilised in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) (Ruys et al. 2010; Ryan and O’Toole 2013). This often means that, drawing on their ‘apprenticeship of observation’ (Lortie 1975, 2002), student teachers tend not to use such approaches with children (Bąbka 2012), perhaps due to low self-efficacy beliefs about implementing group work in classrooms (Ruys et al. ibid) and so the ‘social pedagogic potential’ of classroom and indeed university-based learning is therefore unrealised (Blatchford et al. 2003). This paper reports the insights of a cohort of student teachers on their experiences of an integrated, cooperative approach to the teaching and assessment of Psychology and Sociology in Initial Teacher Education in Ireland. In spite of some challenges in terms of logistics, the findings are overwhelmingly positive, with benefits of cooperative learning including deeper and more meaningful learning than in individualistic or competitive approaches, greater application of theory to practice, stronger motivation and more enjoyment of learning on behalf of students, more integrated inter-disciplinary thinking, improvements in academic self-efficacy beliefs and self-confidence, and stronger critical engagement with material.

Opis:
A look at the adaptation of students crossing the second educational threshold in the perspective of constructivism makes it clear that it is important to reach ways of thinking about early childhood education of 4th grade teachers. The early-school education model adopted by them translates to a large extent into the perception and evaluation of the resources of the 4th grade, which, in turn, sets the direction of the teaching communication activity in the school class, creating an environment for the student’s adaptation process at the beginning of learning in the 4th grade. The presented research adopts a phenomenographic perspective of collecting and analyzing data from semi-structured interviews with Polish language teachers from one environment. The results reveal how teachers describe and value early childhood education as a source of 4th grade resources. These ways of thinking about early school education, focusing on its determinants, have been interpreted as discursive knowledge. Based on the theory of Bernstein’s socio-pedagogical codes, an attempt was made to describe the mechanism of consolidating this perception of early childhood education. The dominant teaching discourse reveals the depreciation of the child’s previous experience related to the conditions of early school education, e.g. one teacher, active learning and teaching methods, descriptive assessment; and thus strengthens the obviousness of the hardships and failures of the Fourth graders that have always been experienced.

Opis:
School culture and climate, more than any other factors, determine school efficiency. Building a positive school climate means to create the conditions both for students and teachers to work and learn effectively – feeling supported, safe, motivated and satisfied with their outcomes, and ready to contribute to the school improvement. In the light of many research, schools with positive climate are those which pay attention not only to the high academic outcomes, often measured by the tests, but also (or mostly?) to the social and emotional well-being of every student and adult. The subject of the article concerns the perception of school climate and learning setting by teachers and students from two Warsaw high junior schools, which significantly differ from each other in the effect of standardized external tests on students’ academic outcomes. The text contains some conclusions from a multi-faceted exploration of school culture and climate at these schools. First, the author compares teacher – student perception of school climate within the school, and then compares two school workplaces focusing on human relationships as an important factor of school climate. In this text selected cathegories of school climate are analysed: (1) school satisfaction, (2) teacher – student and peer relationships, (3) teachers’ support for students, (4) motivating students to succeed, (5) obeying the students’ rights at school, (6) agressive behavior among students. Quantitative analysis are complemented with qualitative analysis.

Opis:
Teaching in surgery, one of the classical big clinical and main disciplines beside internal medicine, needs to be also associated with great attention in regard to a valuable final result at the end of the study of human medicine. In particular, surgery is not only the subject to a large number of lectures it also represents one third (four months) of the compulsory internship (practical year – in German, “Praktisches Jahr”) at the end of the study of medicine. Therefore, medical teaching of students should be always part of serious and steady attempts to optimize course und contents as a component of guiding activities focussing onto the substantial improvement of the study of medicine. In detail, the classical and traditionally established type of teaching, the (oral) lecture, has to be further developed and reasonably completed by numerous interactive and practice-oriented teaching, learning and examining modalities (obligatory or facultative seminars / courses, training in [very] small groups of students, bed-side teaching, individual practical exercises within the SkillsLab, groups of young researchers, research projects in teaching, scientific publications on topics and recommendable experiences ot teaching including students, ”Teach-the-teacher“ projects etc.). Although many novel concepts have been inaugurated and considerable advances have been achieved, there is a steady need for further improvement. In the presented representative but medical school-specific overview, the current complex surgical teaching concept, which has been continuously optimized over the last couple of years, at the Otto-von-Guericke University Medical School with University Hospital of Magdeburg (Germany) is described as a scientific and systematizing document as well as a manuscript associated with the ongoing preparation of an institutional “Teaching Manual” on surgical teaching and training for medical students. It should – last but not least – provide the basis for a public discussion, which vice versa might hopefully and possibly result in further structural reforms of (surgical) teaching in the near future.

Opis:
L2 motivation is a relational phenomenon, shaped by teacher responsiveness (Lamb, 2017; Ushioda, 2009). Little, however, is known about the practices in which responsiveness is manifested. Drawing on research from the culturally responsive teaching paradigm (Petrone, 2013), and highlighting the role of empathy and perspective taking (Warren, 2018), the aim of this ethnographic case study of two lessons with a focus on poetry is to develop a relational understanding of the evolution of motivation. Analyses reveal how perspective taking has instructional and interactional dimensions, and how connections between lesson content and funds of knowledge with origins in students’ interactions with popular culture bring additional layers of meaning to learning. It is suggested that while connections that arise through perspective taking practices shape students’ in-the-moment motivational responses, they also accumulate in ways that lead to enduring motivational dispositions.

The theoretical basis of the teaching practice model is based on the tradition of praxis, critical theory and the psychopedagogics of creativity. Teacher’s actions are determined by the knowledge of a reflective – critical praxis and are understood to be wise and ethical, requiring application and interpretation of the theory. In their teaching practice, teachers should use both instrumental knowledge, that is téchnē and create new and valuable solutions. All this should begin with the very first teaching experiences of the students, especially in the real-life situations offered by the teaching practice. This means the process of education in the practices should be organized by an academic teacher (practice teacher). The idea is that students do not learn directly from their practice, but progress in their teaching practice from the application of theory to creation and verification of their own, new and valuable solutions. The Practice teacher supports students by organizing group and individual educational dialogue and pedagogical discourse on the practice material, and learning through research and action. The effectiveness of the teaching practice is determined by research conducted by an academic teacher using a variety of qualitative research techniques.
