Opis:
To describe mechanical behaviour of a granular material it is indispensable to have parameters such as the coefficient of friction on a bin wall, the angle of internal friction and the bulk density and the k-value in Janssen's equation. The values of these parameters depend on many known and unknown factors. In the case of plant granular solids indisputable is the role of moisture content of grain, vertical pressure and sliding velocity. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of mechanical properties of wheat grain on wall and bottom load distribution in a model grain bin. A series of tests involving eight filling methods, eccentric discharge from five different locations of a bin orifice and three bin wall surfaces were conducted on a laboratory scale cylindrical bin 0.61 m in diameter and 2.44 m high. The wall and flat floor of the bin were supported independently on three load cells so that load distributions could be isolated. Static and dynamic wall and bottom loads were found to be influenced by the filling method. Shower filling produced lower static load of the smooth wall as compared to central filling and higher static load of corrugated and rough walls. The experiments showed a significant influence of grain orientation on load distribution. Variable angle of internal friction within the Janssen differential element can explain the non-uniform load distribution obtained. The horizontal bending moments exerted on the wall and floor of the bin during eccentric discharge were found to decrease with an increase in the bin wall friction coefficient and were influenced significantly by the orifice eccentricity ratio, with the maximum moment occurring at ER equal to 0.667. The horizontal pressure distribution around the circumference of the bin wall depends on the height from the floor. Near the floor of the bin the horizontal pressure was larger on the side of the bin opposite the discharge orifice, while for locations higher above the floor, the horizontal pressure was larger on the side nearest the discharge orifice. As the ratio of the grain height to the bin diameter decreased below approximately 1 a change in the direction of the resultant friction force on the bin wall from a normal downward direction to an upward direction was observed. The change in direction of the resultant tangent force originates from the combination of the downward friction force of flowing grain and the upward friction force of the grain contained within the dead zone of the bin. Moisture content of grain influences its compressibility, friction against the bin wall, height of the dead zone and, in consequence, the upward movement of grains in the dead zone of the flat bottom bin during discharge.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to test the usefulness of split rhizotrone technique to investigate the effect of localized soil anoxia on root and shoot developement, using maize as a test plant. The experiment was performed in 6 split rhizotrons enabling differentiation of soil aeration status in each half of the rhizotron by blowing nitrogen or air through them. The rhizotrone consists of two parts (each 16.6 dm3 in volume) inclined with an angle 60°. Each part is constructed of 1 mm thick stainless steel plate with a glass inner wall for root observation and has dimensions 84 cm x 40.5 cm x 5.0 cm. The rhizotrons were filled in with a brown loess soil material (Eutric Camhisol) from Ap horizon (from Eli/6wka, near Lublin). Maize seedlings with the roots splitted between the rhizotrone halves (eukivars KLG 2210 and DEA) were used in the experiments. Until the stress period the soil moisture tension of 20-80 kPa provided good water and air conditions. At a stage of 8 leaves three treatments were applied for a period of 7 days; an oxic control (P/P), a localized anoxia with 50% of the roots in nitrogen treated part (P/A), and a complete anoxia (A/A) with gas nitrogen in both parts. During the stress period diurnal elongation rates of primary roots (by marking positions of the tips each day) as well as distribution of two indicators of soil oxygenation status with depth viz. of oxygen diffusion rate (ODR) and of redox potential (Eh) in soil were measured. Shoot elongation rates were monitored with a potentiometer attached to the youngest leaf. Microscopic photographs of cross- sections of the caps and of apical meristems of primary roots at 400 magnification were made to show the changes in their anatomy due to anoxia. Chemical analysis of the shoots was performed after the stress period. For each cultivar the experiment was repeated three times. The investigations performed allowed the following conclusions to be drown out: 1. The split rhizotrone was shown to be a useful technique to study behaviour of the primary maize roots under localized anoxia conditions. 2. The ODR and Eh distribution with depth showed deterioration of oxygenation status (drop of ODR from control values above 100 |µg m-2 s-1 to the level 30 µg m-2 s-1, decrease of Eh from control values above 550 mV to the level, 300 mV) due to replacement of the soil air with gaseous nitrogen. 3. Root elongation rates under anoxic conditions (both under complete - A/A, and localized - A/P anoxia) were on the level of about 50% of the controle (P/P) during first 4 days and decreased practically to zero by the end of the stress period. In turn, the oxic part of the rhizotrone combined with localized anoxia treatment of the same plant (P/A) exhibited compensation effect and was characterized by stimulation of the root elongation rate up to 80%. This effect was especially distinct after 2-5 days of the stress duration and then tended to decrease. 4Distribution of the root mass in depth under anoxic treatments was characterized by concentration of about 80% of the root mass within first 10 cm of the soil. 5.Microscopic photographs of the root tips showed, under anoxic conditions, shorter meristematic zone, smaller number of mitosis, beginning of aerenchyma formation and dying of the cells at a distance of 1 mm from the root cap. 6.The shoots responded to applying anoxia to both rhizotrone parts by 20% reduction of the growth rate. 7.Both root and shoot elongation rates were correlated also with the temperature. 8.Oxygen deficiency in soil resulted in an increase of exchangeable manganese, what was reflected by its increased concentration in the maize shoots.

Opis:
While numerical methods have become an integral part of everyday work in process engineering for fluid processes, there is a curious lack of such methods in the field of solid handling. One of the reasons may be the inability of the most often used CFD codes to handle bulk solids. In the paper an attempt is made to show how the behaviour of bulk solids can be modelled using a CFD code without a specific constitutive model for bulk solids. Another reason for not using numerical tools to handle bulk materials is the difficulty of generating the necessary material parameters. Those material models suitable for bulk solids that are available in commercial packages are mostly derived from soil mechanics. Their parameters are determined using a triaxial cell. This device is generally not available in the chemical industries and most often not suitable for bulk solids, due to the high stress levels applied in those tests. In the paper a method is presented which allows the use of standard shear test data, supplemented by data from a compression tests in a "lambda-meter", to determine the parameters of an extended Drucker-Prager model with a compressive yield cap. Model equations are given and parameters are determined for white polymer powder. With these parameters a simulation of silo discharge has been performed successfully using a CFD code. To make CFD codes, which already have the much-needed multi-phase capability, capable of handling bulk solid flow, significant work remains to be done (e.g. shear stresses at rest and anisotropic stress tensors).

Opis:
Systemy komórkowe stale podlegają stresowi oksydacyjnemu w wyniku działania reaktywnych form tlenu (RFT). RFT mogą powodować niekorzystne modyfikacje makrocząsteczek w tym lipidów, DNA i białek. Systemy komórkowe posiadają systemy anty oksydacyjne przeciwdziałające niekorzystnym zmianom wywołanym przez RFT. W organizmie człowieka występują enzymy, mające wpływ na równowagę prooksydant/antyoksydant i decydują o zmianach oksydacyjnych i ryzyku wystąpienia zwyrodnień chorobowych. Należą do nich m.in. peroksydaza glutationowa (GSHPX), dysmutaza ponadtlenkowa (SOD) oraz katalaza.
Cellular systems are always subject to oxidation stress owing to the reactive oxygen system effect (ROS). ROS can generate unfavourable modifications in such macromolecules as lipids, DNA, and proteins. Cellular systems have antioxidant systems to neutralize those unfavourable changes produced by ROS. In human organisms, there are enzymes that influence the equilibrium between pro-oxidant and antioxidant; they also decide oxidizable changes and the risky possibility of degenerative diseases to develop. The potential degeneration types involve glutathione peroxidase (GSHPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase. Vitamins C and E, as well as carotenoids and flavonoids play a role similar to the role of enzymes as indicated above. Regarding the fact that they are usually supplied with food, it is an important task and a real challenge for scientists specialised in nutrition to determine optimal doses of both the compounds and nutritive components containing them.

Opis:
The thermohaline characteristics of the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, depict a welldefined seasonal pattern of winter mixing from December to April and summer stratification from May to November. This thermohaline structure is a major controlling factor of the nutrient, chlorophyll a and primary productivity seasonal cycles. The nitrate and chlorophyll a concentration records generated down to 200 m at a vertical resolution of 25 m – weekly during 1994, 1995 and every two weeks from April 1997 through to December 2000 – are employed to assess the nitrogen flux across the summer thermocline of the Gulf of Aqaba. The flux calculations are based on a simple diffusion model that incorporates the physical stress eddy diffusivity factor Kz and a biological stress factor k. Both Kz and k are calculated using the Michaelis-Menten equation and the nitrate concentration gradient. The total nitrate flux of the Gulf of Aqaba during the seven summer months (May–November) is estimated at 0.52 moleN m−2. In relation to established primary productivity values (75.5 gC m−2 (May November)−1) and the generated chlorophyll a records, this yields an f fraction of new to total primary production of 0.50. This relatively high f value is discussed with respect to the geophysical characteristics of the Gulf of Aqaba and similar oceanic basins. The remaining 50% is accounted for by cross-sectional flow from the relatively nutrientrich coral reef coastal habitat and rapid recycling, triggered by high irradiance and water temperature.

In the solution structure of the ribosome-associated cold shock response protein Yfia of Escherichia coli in the free state two structural segments can be distinguished: a well structured, rigid N-terminal part displaying a βαβββα topology and a flexible C-terminal tail comprising last 20 amino-acid residues. The backbone dynamics of Yfia protein was studied by 15N nuclear magnetic relaxation at three magnetic fields and analyzed using model-free approach. The overall diffusional tumbling of the N-terminal part is strongly anisotropic with a number of short stretches showing increased mobility either on a subnanosecond time scale, or a micro- to millisecond time scale, or both. In contrast, the unstructured polypeptide chain of the C-terminal part, which cannot be regarded as a rigid structure, shows the predominance of fast local motions over slower ones, both becoming faster closer to the C-terminus.

This article describes linkages between the work-family interface and individual, family and work outcomes: life satisfaction, marital satisfaction, individual psychologicall well-being, job stress. Recent studies on the work-family interface have focused on the scarcity perspective, which posits that engaging in multiple roles results in interrole conflict when participation in one role is made more difficult by virtue of participation in the other role. Other studies support the facilitation or enhancement hypothesis which suggests, that participation in one role is made better or easier by virtue of participation in the other role. The aim of this research is to present a research project studying the work-family questionnaire (Grzywacz, Bass, 2003) assessing work-family conflict, work-family facilitation, family-work conflict, family-work facilitation:to analyze both the conflict and facilitation dimensions and both directions of influence: work to family and family to work in dual-earner couples,to examine the relation of conflict and facilitation to life satisfaction, marital satisfaction and other indicators of mental health. The subjects in this research are 80 married couples living in dual-earner families in Poland, who have at least one child under 12.Measures used in this study:Work-Family Fit Questionnaire (Grzywacz, Bass, 2003) in Polish version adopted by Lachowska (2005),Job characteristics assessed through a questionnaire developed by Dudek at al.
