Objectives Emotions and stress affect voice production. There are only a few reports in the literature on how changes in the autonomic nervous system affect voice production. The aim of this study was to examine emotions and measure stress reactions during a voice examination procedure, particularly changes in the muscles surrounding the larynx. Material and Methods The study material included 50 healthy volunteers (26 voice workers – opera singers, 24 control subjects), all without vocal complaints. All subjects had good voice quality in a perceptual assessment. The research procedure consisted of 4 parts: an ear, nose, and throat (ENT)‑phoniatric examination, surface electromyography, recording physiological indicators (heart rate and skin resistance) using a wearable wristband, and a psychological profile based on questionnaires. Results The results of the study demonstrated that there was a relationship between positive and negative emotions and stress reactions related to the voice examination procedure, as well as to the tone of the vocal tract muscles. There were significant correlations between measures describing the intensity of experienced emotions and vocal tract muscle maximum amplitude of the cricothyroid (CT) and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles during phonation and non-phonation tasks. Subjects experiencing eustress (favorable stress response) had increased amplitude of submandibular and CT at rest and phonation. Subjects with high levels of negative emotions, revealed positive correlations with SCMmax during the glissando. The perception of positive and negative emotions caused different responses not only in the vocal tract but also in the vegetative system. Correlations were found between emotions and physiological parameters, most markedly in heart rate variability. A higher incidence of extreme emotions was observed in the professional group. Conclusions The activity of the vocal tract muscles depends on the type and intensity of the emotions and stress reactions. The perception of positive and negative emotions causes different responses in the vegetative system and the vocal tract.

Background The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of hand grip strength (HGS) test in identifying highly stressed individuals and to examine the effect of exercise and lifestyle on HGS and stress measures. Material and methods It is cross-sectional study. Students of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Poland were asked to fill out a questionnaire, undergo body composition analysis, perform HGS test and provide a saliva sample for cortisol measurement. Results Self-rated stress (SRS) was significantly higher in pre-clinical years (PCY) compared to clinical years (CY). HGS was significantly lower in PCY males than CY males. Participants who performed some form of exercise had significantly higher HGS compared with those who did not exercise. A positive correlation between HGS and BMI was noted. Students with low HGS were found to have lower levels of salivary cortisol (SC). However, there was no significant difference in SC levels between PCY and CY students. Conclusions HGS may be a reliable method of identifying stressed individuals and promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors. HGS testing is a safe, cheap and easy to perform method for a large number of participants while being time economical.

Oxidative stress (OS) plays a pivotal role in the development of many diseases. Therefore, many efforts have been undertaken to minimize the consequences of OS or improve antioxidant defence systems. One solution expected to improve redox homeostasis is the ketogenic diet (KD). KD is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet leading to a ketosis state. The shift in metabolism occurring in ketosis can affect the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-producing pathways and influence the expression of enzymes involved in redox homeostasis. Therefore, this review summarizes and discusses existing knowledge about KD and ROS homeostasis. The available tools for evaluating OS status are presented, listing their potential and drawbacks. An important aspect is the summary of the current knowledge about the effect of KD on OS conducted in vitro, in vivo, and in clinical trials. Finally, the review addresses future studies needed to understand the connection between KD and OS.

Introduction and aim. Violation in the salivary glands will inevitably cause changes in periodontium, and periodontitis can disrupt the functioning of the salivary glands. The purpose of the work is to evaluate changes in NO-synthase and arginase activities, pro- and antioxidant balance in rat salivary glands and soft periodontal tissues during administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and water avoidance stress (WAS) modeling. Material and methods. The experiment was performed on 24 rats. The animals were divided into 4 groups: control, WAS, animals injected intraperitoneally with 0.4 μg/kg of bacterial LPS of Salmonella typhi, WAS+LPS. Results. Water avoidance stress led to decrease of inducible NO-synthase (iNOS) activity in salivary glands by 1.63 times, but decreased arginase activity by 1.15 times, superoxide production increased by 1.53 times, catalase activity decreased by 1.2 times, and malonic dialdehyde (MDA) increased by 1.19 times compared to the control. Lipopolysaccharide led to increase of constitutive NO-synthases (cNOS) activity in salivary glands by 1.48 times, but decreased arginase activity by 6.15 times, catalase activity increased by 2.6 times and superoxide dismutase activity decreased by 2.74 times, and MDA increased by 6.84 times compared to the control. Water avoidance stress + LPS in salivary glands led to decrease of cNOS and arginase activity by 1.09 and 1.19 times, respectively, superoxide production increased by 1.88 times, catalase and superoxide dismutase activity decreased by 1.06 times and 1.34 times, respectively, and MDA increased by 2.44 times compared to the control. Water avoidance stress led to increase of iNOS activity in periodontium by 1.44 times and arginase activity decreased by 1.37 times, superoxide production increased 1.32 times, catalase activity and superoxide dismutase activities decreased by 1.27 times and by 1.53 times, respectively, and MDA increased by 1.31 times compared to the control. Lipopolysaccharide led to increase of iNOS activity in the periodontium by 3.88 times, arginase activity decreased by 2.69 times, superoxide production increased 1.64 times, catalase activity increased by 4.32 times, and MDA increased by 4.51 times compared to the control. Water avoidance stress + LPS in periodontium led to increase of iNOS and cNOS activities by 1.95 times and 1.53, respectively, arginase activity decreased by 1.39 times, superoxide production increased 1.66 times, catalase activity increased by 1.11 times, and MDA increased by 1.53 times compared to the control. Conclusion. The combination of LPS and WAS leads to changes in NO production and oxidative stress in salivary glands and the periodontium.

The study was conducted in Ukraine during the onset of COVID-19 pandemic. The sample contained 232 individuals. The aim was to study emotional experiences and their connection with coping strategies in the context of gender differences. The research was based on the concept of differential emotions, and on the understanding of the accumulation strategies as a dynamic process, which is determined by personal prepositions and situational factors. Measures used in the study were the Differential Emotions Scale and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The growth of negative experiences and stress at the beginning of the pandemic among men and women was confirmed. We described the differences regarding emotions and coping strategies. Women use emotion-focused strategies of social support, strategies of positive reappraisal of the situation, and avoidance, the acceptance of responsibility among women is associated with negative emotions. We found that women more frequently use two or more coping strategies compared to men. A different emotional basis of coping strategies, expressed at high levels of tension among men and women, was revealed. The defined features of coping behavior among men and women may help to determine the main goals for the development of preventive and psychotherapeutic interventions.

Objectives Occupational stress is a common complaint in nurses, who perceived more sense of effort-reward imbalance (ERI). Suboptimal health status (SHS) is a state between health and disease. However, the correlation between ERI and SHS is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of SHS and ERI and evaluate the relationship between ERI and SHS in clinical nurses by a cross-sectional study. Material and Methods The current cross-sectional study was conducted through an online survey at Dongping People’s Hospital in China. A total of 633 completed surveys were received. Effort-reward imbalance was measured by subscales of the ERI questionnaire. SHS was measured by the Suboptimal Health Status Questionnaire – 25 (SHSQ-25). The relationship between ERI and SHS in nurses was subsequently assessed by Spearman’s correlation coefficient and logistic regression model. Results The mean age of the optimal health status (OHS) group (M±SD 26.3±7.3 years) was younger than the SHS group (M±SD 30.3±6.9 years). The prevalence of SHS was 54.5% (345/633). Female nurses aged ≥30 years, a junior college or university graduate educational level, smokers, and nurses without regular exercise were at a higher risk of SHS. In Spearman’s correlation analysis, ERI reflected by the effort-reward ratio was correlated with SHSQ-25 score (r = 0.662, p < 0.001). In logistic regression, ERI was strongly associated with SHS after potential confounding factors adjusting (OR 27.924, 95% CI 22.845–34.132). Conclusions The prevalence of SHS was significantly high in clinical nurses. Administrators should pay more attention to health status of female nurses aged ≥30 years, with a junior college or bachelor’s degree, smoking, and without regular exercise to reduce the SHS and ERI.

Po dokonaniu przeglądu literatury przedmiotu zidentyfikowano brak badań na temat opinii pokolenia Z dotyczących postrzegania wad pracy zdalnej, co stanowi lukę badawczą, którą to postanowiono wypełnić. Celem artykułu jest określenie postrzegania przez przedstawicieli pokolenia Z w Polsce wpływu wad pracy zdalnej na satysfakcję z jej wykonywania. Ważne jest uzyskanie odpowiedzi na pytanie, które z nich w znaczący sposób obniżają poziom satysfakcji? Realizacja obranego celu, udzielenie odpowiedzi na pytanie badawcze oraz weryfikacja hipotez możliwa była dzięki dokonaniu przeglądu literatury, przeprowadzeniu badania ankietowego i zastosowaniu wybranych instrumentów analizy statystycznej. Wykazano, iż kobiety i mężczyźni z pokolenia Z statystycznie istotnie różnie postrzegają wady pracy zdalnej, które mogą mieć wpływ na brak satysfakcji z niej. Wady pracy zdalnej można zakwalifikować do kilku obszarów takich jak: wzrost stresu, brak fizycznej interakcji, izolacja, niewystarczająca infrastruktura techniczna a także konieczność samodzielnego wykonywania zadań i wzrost liczby obowiązków bez dodatkowego wynagrodzenia.
After reviewing the literature on the topic, a lack of studies of the opinions of Generation Z on the perceived disadvantages of remote work was identified, forming a research gap. It was considered important to determine how employees representing Generation Z in Poland perceive their impact on job satisfaction, which is important in the process of building motivational systems. The purpose of the article is to determine the perception of representatives of Generation Z in Poland of the impact of the disadvantages of remote work on job satisfaction. The goal is to find answers to the question - which disadvantages significantly reduce the level of their satisfaction? Realisation of the chosen objective, answering the research question and verifying the hypotheses were possible by conducting a literature review and a survey, and using selected instruments of statistical analysis. The study showed that male and female representatives of Generation Z statistically have significantly different perceptions of the disadvantages of remote work, which can affect the lack of satisfaction with remote work, with its disadvantages classified into 4 areas. The survey found that the greatest impact on lack of satisfaction with remote work was from increased stress, awareness of the lack of physical interaction, isolation, inadequate technical infrastructure, as well as the need to perform tasks independently and an increase in responsibilities without additional compensation.

Introduction and aim. Oxidative stress is one of the complications that accompany defects in thyroid hormone levels. This study was designed to evaluate oxidative stress markers in patients with hypothyroidism. Material and methods. This case control study was comprised of forty-two hypothyroid patients aged 36–46 years and forty age matched (35–43 years) healthy control participants randomly selected from the Endocrine Clinic of Al-Yarmook Hospital in Iraq. Blood levels of thyroid hormones malondialdehyde, glutathione, and paraoxonase-1 were assessed. Body mass index was calculated for each patient and control participant. Results. Regarding the data of oxidative stress markers in hypothyroid patients compared to controls, a significant elevation was reported in blood levels of malondialdehyde and a significant reduction was found in blood levels of glutathione (p=0.031). On the other hand, the blood levels of paraoxonase-1 were significantly different in hypothyroid patients compared with the control. Conclusion. Elevated blood levels of malondialdehyde and declined blood levels of glutathione in hypothyroid patients are a signal of oxidative stress and consequently increase the risk of cardiovascular complications.

Healthcare workers are representatives of occupations that are most exposed to high levels of stress in the work environment. These characteristics of work increase the probability of suffering from mental disorders. One aspect of mental disorder prevention in the workplace is the role of healthcare managers as those people who are responsible for minimizing the negative impact of work-related stress factors. Their role can be performed by creating effective initiatives supporting workers’ mental health. The need to support the implementation of such initiatives has been highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the review is to summarize available types of managerial interventions in the field of mental health protection of medical staff, considering the assessment of their prevalence, determinants of effectiveness, and limitations from the perspective of healthcare managers. The article was prepared based on the literature review method and covered publications from original research in English and Polish, published until June 2023 in the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, and PsycINFO. In addition to the original research, the review also includes documents developed by international health organizations. The determinants of effective managerial interventions that can be used for the needs of managers and decision-makers in the field of mental health management in the workplace have been presented. The greatest widespread of mental health initiatives concerned the pandemic period, but now the key systemic task should be to maintain the frequency of impacts outside the pandemic period, due to the constant nature of stressors. The determinants of their effectiveness include, among others: incorporating elements of psychological knowledge into the process of educating managers, involving healthcare specialists in the development of programs, and examining the needs of the staff each time at the stage preceding interventions.

This paper investigates the stress and strain state as well as formation processes of structure and features of aluminum alloys during the hot extrusion. It has been shown that during the hot extrusion the ring layers of an extruded element experience not only longitudinal and transverse deformations, but also a slip. The slip increases from inner layers to the surface layer. The tensile principal stresses and the sum of slip deformations also increase. It has been also demonstrated that at the exit of the pressing part the tensile principal stresses have different directions, forming an angle with extruder axis, which also increases towards the surface. In conclusion, it has been stated that the main radial and circumferential deformations act as restraining deformations.

Mobbing behaviours at workplaces and occupational burnout have negative impacts on the working and private lives. Mobbing, irrespective of its intensity, represents one of the most significant stressors and often leads to an irreversible psycho-deterioration of an individual. Overcoming a stressful situation at work requires specifying the methods for coping with stress resulting in job burnout. Job burnout is a complex syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. The aim of these study was to analyze interrelationships between mobbing, coping with stress and job burnout among nurses. The study included 86 nurses of various specialties, who gave their consent to participate in the project, were examined. The average age of the nurses was 37.7 years, and the average job seniority was 12.6 years. The study were conducted in 2019-2020 in hospitals of Southern Poland. and was based on the following instruments: Sociodemographic survey, The Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ), COPE Inventory and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The presented studies showed a statistically significant and consistent relationship between the intensity of perceived mobbing in nurses and the results obtained on the scale of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. A relationship was found between the preference for some specific stress management strategies and job burnout level, also after adjustment for the mobbing intensity, age and seniority of the respondents, thus empirically confirming a multifaceted nature of the unfavorable phenomena related to the work of a nurse. It was found that there is interrelationships between mobbing, coping with stress and job burnout among nurses.

W ramach niniejszej pracy podjęto problematykę wyzwań i perspektyw edukacji w kontekście systemu więziennego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem potrzeb więźniów oraz dostępnych zasobów i możliwości. Celem badania było określenie relacji między nasileniem różnych aspektów postawy wobec edukacji u więźniów a percepcją własnej skuteczności. Badanie przeprowadzono na 115 osobach odbywających karę pozbawienia wolności w jednostkach penitencjarnych Okręgu Lubelskiego Służby Więziennej. Analizy empiryczne wykazały istotne korelacje między emocjonalnym aspektem postawy wobec edukacji a percepcją własnych sukcesów i porażek, poziomem odczuwanego stresu oraz perswazjami ze strony innych osób. Intensywność poznawczego wymiaru postawy wobec edukacji istotnie koreluje z poziomem percepcji perswazji ze strony innych osób, z kolei intensywność wymiaru behawioralnego koreluje z poziomem doświadczanego stresu. Więźniowie mogą równocześnie wykazywać sprzeczne przekonania na temat edukacji, które mogą być zarówno pozytywne, jak i negatywne, jednocześnie doświadczając dużego poziomu stresu, co wskazuje na straty zasobów, oraz odnosząc sukcesy, co odbija się na zyskach kapitałowych.
Education in prisons is a significant aspect of prisoner rehabilitation and resocialization, yet it is often marginalized in public discourse and penitentiary policy. This study examines the challenges and prospects of education within the prison system, focusing on the needs of prisoners and the resources and opportunities available to them. The research aims to investigate the relationship between the intensity of various aspects of attitudes towards education among prisoners and their perception of self-efficacy. The study was conducted on 115 individuals serving sentences in penitentiary units within the Lublin District of the Polish Prison Service. Empirical analyses revealed significant correlations between the emotional attitudes towards education and the perception of personal successes and failures, the level of experienced stress, and persuasion from others. Meanwhile, the intensity of the cognitive attitudes towards education significantly correlated with the perception of persuasion from others, while the intensity of the behavioural aspects correlated with the level of experienced stress. Prisoners may simultaneously exhibit conflicting beliefs about education, which can be both positive and negative while experiencing high levels of stress, which indicates a loss of resources, and being successful, which reflects on capital gains.

Wstęp Istnieje wiele technik, które pozwalają diagnozować objawy stresu pourazowego (post-traumatic stress disorder – PTSD) odpowiadające klasyfikacji zaburzeń psychicznych (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders– DSM). Celem analiz była ocena rzetelności i trafności teoretycznej polskiej wersji PTSD-8 oraz porównanie wyników uzyskanych w 4 grupach zawodowych pracowników ochrony zdrowia (lekarze, pielęgniarki, ratownicy medyczni i inne zawody). Materiał i metody Kwestionariusz PTSD-8 zawiera pytania na temat reakcji stresowych objawiających się intruzją (4 itemy), unikaniem (2 itemy) lub nadmiernym pobudzeniem (2 itemy). Respondenci byli pytani o reakcję na doświadczenia w związku z traumatycznymi przeżyciami związanymi z pracą zawodową w czasie pandemii COVID-19. Ogólnopolskim badaniem ankietowym przeprowadzonym w 2022 r. objęto 2303 pracowników, z których 746 doznało traumatycznego zdarzenia i wypełniło kwestionariusz PTSD-8. Wyniki Na podstawie wyników konfirmacyjnej analizy czynnikowej (confirmatory factor analysis – CFA) wykazano, że dopuszczalny jest model 1-czynnikowy, ale pod warunkiem modyfikacji przez skorelowanie błędów losowych przy wybranych zmiennych obserwowalnych. Rzetelność tej skali okazała się bardzo dobra (Ω McDonalda = 0,890), a o dobrej jakości dopasowania ogólnego modelu CFA świadczą następujące wskaźniki: CMIN/DF = 3,969, NFI = 0,982, RFI = 0,964, IFI = 0,986, TLI = 0,983 i RMSEA = 0,063. Najlepszymi własnościami psychometrycznymi cechował się model oszacowany dla pielęgniarek. W badanej grupie (N = 2303) 16,76% respondentów spełniało kryteria PTSD, co stanowi 52,74% osób, które doznały traumatycznego przeżycia związanego z pracą w czasie pandemii COVID-19. Średni indeks PTSD-8 wynosił M±SD 20,01±5,55 pkt (zakres: 8–32 pkt) i był istotnie wyższy u kobiet niż u mężczyzn oraz wyższy w przypadku pielęgniarek niż innych zawodów. Różnice między grupami zawodowymi były jednak istotne tylko dla kobiet, a największe przy porównaniu lekarek i pielęgniarek. Wnioski Przeprowadzone analizy potwierdzają zasadność dalszego wdrażania w Polsce kwestionariusza PTSD-8 zarówno jako narzędzia wspomagającego wczesną diagnostykę PTSD, jak i do badania nasilenia tego zespołu, jego uwarunkowań i skutków zdrowotnych.
Background There are several techniques to diagnose post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms that correspond to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) classification of mental disorders. This study aimed at testing the reliability and construct validity of the Polish version of the PTSD-8. The results obtained in 4 professional groups of healthcare workers (physicians, nurses, paramedics, other occupations) were compared. Material and Methods The PTSD-8 questionnaire includes questions on stress reactions manifested by intrusion (4 items), avoidance (2 items), or hypervigilance (2 items). Respondents were asked about their reactions to the traumatic work-related experiences occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic. The nationwide survey conducted in 2022 included 2303 employees, among whom 746 had such an experience and completed the PTSD-8 questionnaire. Results Based on confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) results, it was shown that a single-factor model is acceptable, but under the condition of modification by correlation of random errors at selected observable variables. The reliability of this scale is very good (McDonald’s Ω = 0.890), and the goodness-of-fit of the overall CFA model is confirmed by: CMIN/DF = 3.969, NFI = 0.982, RFI = 0.964, IFI = 0.986, TLI = 0.983, RMSEA = 0.063. The model estimated for female nurses has the best psychometric properties. In the study group of 2303 respondents, 16.76% met the criteria for PTSD, accounting for 52.74% of those who were traumatized by a work-related event. The PTSD-8 index is M±SD 20.01±5.55 pts (range: 8–32 pts). The PTSD-8 index is significantly higher in women than in men, and higher in nurses compared to other professions. However, the differences between professional groups are significant only for women, and the largest when comparing female physicians and nurses. Conclusions The analyses confirmed the rationale of further implementation of the PTSD-8 questionnaire in Poland, both as a tool for identifying PTSD and for studying the severity of the syndrome, its determinants and health effects.

The aim of the study is to analyze the impact of the increased risk of developing PTSD on the professional lives of affected individuals and the specifics of their position in the labor market. The basis for this research is the Russian-Ukrainian war, which in 2022 grew from a local conflict to a level far surpassing the Yugoslav conflict. Such crisis events place a huge burden on the human psyche, can cause numerous mental problems, and, due to the vast number of refugees, will undoubtedly trigger migration crises. Considering the historical experience of wars and the current prospects for long-term development, the number of people with chronic disorders will only grow, which is why it is important to learn how to reintegrate people with PTSD into society in general, and into the labor market in particular. A secondary, but no less important aspect is the adaptation of the results to times and societies not affected by global traumatic crises, since PTSD, contrary to its reputation, does not only concern victims and participants of conflicts. The study analyzes and proposes recommendations both for employees identified as being in a risk group and for the direct management of such employees. The research employs literature analysis and a qualitative anonymous survey of respondents. This study focuses on the increased risk of PTSD or the diagnosis itself on the careers of individuals in the labor market, with particular emphasis on the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war. A survey conducted among diverse respondents aged 18-44 reveals trends in education and challenges in work that intensify with the level of risk. Limited use of the support program suggests the need for increased participation measures. Recommendations for individuals emphasize self-assessment, open communication, continuous education, and seeking help. Employers are advised to support open communication, consider indirect identification, raise mental health awareness, redistribute duties, and avoid direct pressure on individuals with PTSD. These recommendations aim to create a supportive environment, highlighting the necessity for further interdisciplinary research.
Celem badań jest analiza wpływu zwiększonego ryzyka rozwoju PTSD na życie zawodowe osób dotkniętych chorobą oraz specyfikę ich pozycji na rynku pracy. Podstawą tych badań jest wojna rosyjsko-ukraińska, która w 2022 r. z lokalnego konfliktu urosła do poziomu znacznie przewyższającego konflikt jugosłowiański. Takie kryzysowe wydarzenia są ogromnym obciążeniem dla ludzkiej psychiki, mogą powodować liczne problemy psychiczne, a ze względu na ogromną liczbę uchodźców z pewnością wywołają kryzysy migracyjne. Biorąc pod uwagę historyczne doświadczenia wojen i obecne perspektywy długoterminowego rozwoju, liczba osób z zaburzeniami przewlekłymi będzie tylko rosła, dlatego ważne jest, aby uczyć się jak reintegrować osoby z PTSD ze społeczeństwem w ogóle, a w szczególności z rynkiem pracy. Drugorzędnym, ale nie mniej ważnym aspektem jest dostosowanie wyników do czasów i społeczeństw niedotkniętych globalnymi traumatycznymi kryzysami, ponieważ PTSD, wbrew swojej reputacji, nie dotyczy wyłącznie ofiar i uczestników konfliktów. W badaniu przeanalizowano i zaproponowano rekomendacje zarówno dla pracowników podlegających definicji grupy ryzyka, jak i dla bezpośredniego kierownictwa takich pracowników. W badaniach wykorzystano analizę literatury oraz jakościowe anonimowe badanie ankietowe respondentów. Niniejsze badanie dotyczy zwiększonego ryzyka PTSD lub samej diagnozy na kariery poszczególnych osób na rynku pracy, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wpływu wojny rosyjsko-ukraińskiej. Ankieta przeprowadzona wśród zróżnicowanych respondentów w wieku 18-44 lat ujawnia trendy w edukacji i wyzwania w pracy, które nasilają się wraz z poziomem ryzyka. Ograniczone wykorzystanie programu wsparcia sugeruje potrzebę zwiększenia środków uczestnictwa. Zalecenia dla osób kładą nacisk na samoocenę, otwartą komunikację, ciągłą edukację i szukanie pomocy. Pracodawcom zaleca się wspieranie otwartej komunikacji, rozważenie pośredniej identyfikacji, podnoszenie świadomości w zakresie zdrowia psychicznego, redystrybucję obowiązków i unikanie bezpośredniego nacisku na osoby z PTSD. Zalecenia te mają na celu stworzenie sprzyjającego środowiska, podkreślając konieczność prowadzenia dalszych badań interdyscyplinarnych.

INTRODUCTION: Adequate sleep protects the mental and physical health of individuals while boosting brain and body functions. Significant lifestyle changes due to COVID 19 can affect the sleep quality and level of stress among nurses. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between sleep quality and perceived stress among nurses during this COVID 19 outbreak. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 292 registered nurses in Sri Lanka through an anonymous online survey. Data were collected using self-administered, structured questionnaire that included Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). SPSS 25 software (version 25) was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The majority (79.8%) were between 26-35 years and females (93.5%). Among all participants, the average hours of sleep per night was 5.50 (±1.07). The results of the PSQI scale revealed that 78.4 % of nurses had poor sleep quality (PSQI > 5points), while 67.1% of nurses had moderate level of perceived stress according to the PSS scale. Pearson’s coefficient correlation demonstrated that, as nurses’ sleep quality decreased, stress level of the nurses increased moderately (r=0.53). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of nurses had poor sleep quality and moderate stress. Furthermore, it showed that there is a moderate positive correlation (r=0.53) between the PSQI global score and the perceived stress scale score.
