In 2004 Peterson and Seligman presented their concept of virtues and 24 character strengths which are widely-valued positive characteristics considered to be important for achieving a good, happy life (Peterson, Seligman, 2004). For their measurement Peterson and Seligman (2004) developed Values in Action – Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS). As a part of his International Personality Item Pool project (ipip.ori.org), Goldberg developed his own measurement of Peterson and Seligman’s character strengths, which differs from VIA-IS for example in its open access form. Research on Polish version of the International Personality Item Pool – Values in Action questionnaire (IPIP-VIA) was conducted on a sample of N = 908 adults. It proved satisfactory psychometric properties of the tool. High or satisfactory reliability for all the scales measuring character strengths was achieved. Validity of the tool was tested by comparing sex differences obtained in research with a Polish version of the IPIP-VIA and the results of studies conducted in the UK with the VIA-IS questionnaire.

Positive psychology has been introduced to the applied linguistics literature with the broad goal of improving the experience of language learners and teachers through a variety of interventions (MacIntyre & Mercer, 2014; Gabryś-Barker & Gałajda, 2016). “The aim of positive psychology is to catalyze a change in psychology from preoccupation only with repairing the worst things in life to also building the best qualities in life” (Seligman &Csikszentmihalyi, 2000, p. 5). One significant contribution of this young field has been a series of empirically-tested positive psychology interventions (PPIs) that have been shown to increase positive emotion, reduce distress, and/or improve well-being (Seligman, Steen, Park, & Peterson, 2005; Sin & Lyubormirsky, 2009). In the present research, we examine one application of a PPI involving a focus on using character strengths as a way to address language anxiety. Through a case study analysis, we demonstrate the ways that this intervention was beneficial for the student.

Biographical interviewing is used not only in research but also in clinical work such as social work practice. However, as social work settings differ from research settings, the ways of doing, analyzing, and using biographical interviews will differ. The differences arise from the reasons for and the purposes of the interview, the institutional context, the relationship between interviewer and interviewee, interviewees’ capacity for storytelling and reflective work, time limits, the structure of the biographical interview, and follow-up interviewing. In social work, interviewees are in a more vulnerable position than in research, and there is a stronger power imbalance. The service users’ expectations are essential for the work, and it is important that the users articulate their expectations because the purpose of social work is to change and improve the life situation of service users. This asks for ethical considerations that are partly different from those necessary in research. The biographical interview with Natalia is here analyzed using the strengths perspective as the social work theoretical framework. The analysis shows that in her present life Natalia has many strengths and resources, which, in a social work situation, could be mobilized to support her in getting more control over her life. Her perceived strengths are: her capacity for storytelling and reflection; her emotional and cognitive capacities; her willpower; and her capacity for enjoying her present life and planning for her future. Resources identified are: her significant others; her economic situation; her satisfying job situation; her capacity to have dreams for the future; and her religion. Implications for social work, both in the past and in the present, are discussed.

Opis:
Travelling off the road requires an adequate vehicle. The basic car needs to be properly chosen and prepared according to its destination. Due to understanding problem, the paper explains differences between various kinds of four-wheeling like extreme passage rally, time race or just off-road expeditions. The paper contains classification and description of the most popular in western Europe terrain cars, their construction solutions and general advantages and disadvantages. In the document are also presented vehicle selection criteria. This issue is as significant as proper choice of adequate driving type. Established criteria relate to variety and power of engines, four wheel drive, reduction gearbox, differential locks, weight, and the most important geometric and operation parameters. Due to above features is made the comparison and choice of car for further development. The review, evaluation and selection of building elements are customized to chosen car. Project of development of interior contains construction assumptions, strength calculations and numerical model of the drawer located in the rear of the luggage. Additionally there are also drawings of arrangement of particular body elements. Graphical model, drawings and strengths calculations are performed using the Autodesk Inventor Professional 2011 and AutoCAD Mechanical 2011. Just as the chosen equipment, project is adjusted to dimensions of luggage area of chosen car. Author’s design includes original spacing between the openings in exterior, what allows embedding drawer without any interference in the car body.

The purpose of the article is the presentation of the ways that humor was understood within the current of positive psychology; the state and advances of research on the significance of this property in achieving and safeguarding a "good life” as well as the legitimacy and possibility of applying the theoretical and research approach devised by the mentioned orientation approaches to issues connected with humor to the field of developmental psychology during the life course. A conceptualisation of humor was presented as a character strength comprising the virtue of transcendence in the approach of Peterson and Seligman, a composite of wisdom in the concept of Webster and of a thinking style, experiencing and action in the theory of Martin. A review of research was then undertaken: humor as a virtue imbuing property; humor correlates understood from the perspective of positive psychology; manifestations of its regulative role and individual differences in humor as a resource contributing to individual growth. In the closing paragraphs a suggestion was formulated regarding humor research as a resource that supports positive development, namely, the fulfilment of developmental tasks, overcoming developmental crises and coping with problems connected with ageing.

The study evaluated the effectiveness of the intervention for families raising children with autism aimed to improve the family’s quality of life, strengthen its capacity, and expand rights and opportunities. The experimental intervention was implemented at the Educational and Rehabilitation Center for Children with Autism “Trust” (Lviv, Ukraine). It had one experimental group (30 people) and two control groups (60 people). The effectiveness and duration of the intervention effects were assessed using a before/after study design with the same questionnaire. Findings from the survey evidence the effectiveness of the intervention, in particular, for expanding the family’s capabilities, its capacity, improving relationships in family subsystems, increasing parental competence, and improving well-being. Limitations of the intervention are discussed.

Background: Nurses displayed low levels of subjective well-being and high turnover intention. How to enhance the subjective well-being and decrease the turnover rate of nurses is of great importance. However, little is known about whether work engagement mediates between character strengths and subjective well-being. The study aims to explore character strengths, work engagement and subjective well-being in nurses, and to determine whether work engagement plays a mediating role between the relationship. Material and Methods: From December 2017 to December 2018, 450 Chinese registered nurses completed the character strengths scale, work engagement scale, and subjective well-being scale. The relationship between study variables was tested by Pearson correlation. The mediating effect of work engagement was tested by the bootstrap method. Results: The results indicated the following: (1) the 4 elements of character strengths and work engagement were significantly and positively correlated with subjective well-being; (2) character strengths could significantly predict both work engagement and subjective well-being; (3) work engagement played a mediating role in this relationship. Conclusions: Character strengths affect subjective well-being in Chinese registered nurses, and work engagement plays a mediating variable among the relations. Therefore, nurses are encouraged to foster their character strengths and improve their level of work engagement for their subjective well-being. Following the results, the study recommends that nursing managers be aware of the importance of using character strengths in nursing work, taking actions to excavate nurses’ character strengths and encouraging nurses to use character strengths in clinical work to promote engagement and well-being. In the meantime, interventions to improve the level of subjective well-being based on nurses’ character strengths should be considered.

The paper presents the results of research carried out in a company producing PET bottles. An analysis of the attractive sector in which the company operates was carried out. The tool was used to analyze the five Porter forces. Based on the survey, the areas of attractiveness and the areas to be strengthened were identified.

The primary goal of this paper is to introduce the concept of empowerment, its sources, definitions and various ways to comprehend it. The author’s professional interest lies in the field of scientific research. But the topic was primarily chosen due to the fact that the concept of empowerment has not only been increasingly recognized and studied by social sciences but also widely applied in everyday life. The concept of empowerment has been utilized in many different contexts. It can be categorized as a scientific phenomenon that in spite of being popular and widely used does not have a uniform definition. Empowerment is not only a theory but also an idea, a model or a research. Empowerment is also both a process and the outcome of a process. It may be understood by any one of the mentioned meanings or all of them together. The paper is based on the assumption that empowerment is a multidimensional concept. There are two important consequences of this assumption. First of all, as already mentioned, the concept does not have one uniform definition (the definition depends on different socio-cultural and political contexts the concept operates in). Second of all, the nature of its many dimensions derives from its many levels. There are three levels of empowerment – individual, organizational and community. The paper postulates that the levels are interconnected and interact. So any change on any level influences the other levels. The levels are connected by mediating structures that are essential to find the answer to the question this paper raises – whether an individual can influence a social change? The deliberations presented in this paper are set in the educational context. The author’s reflections on the social and educational intervention models are also set in that context. The paper concludes with the thesis that the empowerment (resources) model needs to be included in the academic curriculum.

Artykuł zawiera wyniki badań wytrzymałości doraźnej stopu aluminium z cynkiem przeznaczonego do przeróbki plastycznej gatunku AW 7020 oraz wykonanych dla niego połączeń spawanych. Jako materiał dodatkowy zastosowano dwa gatunki stopów z magnezem: AlMg5 oraz AlMg4,5Mn objętych normą PN-EN ISO 18273:2007. Dla obu analizowanych stopów stwierdzono spadek twardości w połączeniu spawanym w porównaniu do materiału rodzimego. Odnotowano także znaczny spadek wytrzymałości na rozciąganie dla obu badanych połączeń spawanych. Przesycanie i naturalne starzenie połączeń nie wpłynęło znacząco na poprawę wytrzymałości na rozciąganie. Jedynie dla połączeń spawanych z zastosowaniem stopu AlMg5 stwierdzono nieznaczny wzrost średniej wartości wytrzymałości na rozciąganie.
The work contains results of strength tests for the aluminium alloy with zinc grade AW 7020, destined for plastic working and welded joints made in it. As fillers two grades of alloys with magnesium were applied: AlMg5 and AlMg4,5Mn included in the PN-EN ISO 18273:2007 standard. For both of the analysed deposited metals a drop in hardness of the welded joint in comparison to the native material was observed. Also, significant decrease in tensile strength for both tested joints was discovered. Solution heat treatment and natural ageing of the joints has not significantly improved the tensile strength. Insignificant increase of the average value of tensile strength was only found for the welded joints with the AlMg5 alloy application.

Despite a relatively short period that elapsed since the development of the blockchain or Distributed Ledger technology (DLT), it has been put to multiple uses by multinational corporations, central banks, governments and individuals. It has been responsible for the emergence of digital money and revolutionary changes in a wide array of financial services. The paper examines opportunities and threats associated with the use of the DLT, with a special emphasis on the first experimental digital money, applying a heuristic SWOT analysis. It includes the analysis of properties of the Bitcoin in comparison to traditional money together with detailed examination of protocols that created it in terms of associated dangers.

Idea praw dziecka nie jest nowa. Przez cały XX wiek na arenie międzynarodowej podejmowano różne inicjatywy prawne, promujące prawa dziecka. Za ich zwieńczenie można uznać przyjęcie w 1989 r. Konwencji o prawach dziecka. Chociaż Konwencja dotyczy relacji państwo–dziecko, to wśród organizacji pozarządowych działających na rzecz dzieci od lat toczy się dyskusja, jak organizacje mogą wspomóc promocję i realizację praw dziecka. Niniejszy artykuł nawiązuje do tej dyskusji i podejmuje próbę operacjonalizacji postanowień Konwencji, by ułatwić ich wdrożenie na poziomie poszczególnych instytucji i organizacji działających na rzecz dzieci. Autorki opierają się na sześciu zasadach wywodzących się z Konwencji: 1. Podejście oparte na prawach dziecka, 2. Partycypacja dzieci, 3. Brak dyskryminacji, 4. Najlepiej pojęty interes dzieci, 5. Wzmacnianie potencjału, 6. Po pierwsze nie szkodzić.
The idea of children’s rights is not new. Throughout the 20th century, various legal initiatives were launched on the international scene, promoting the rights of the child. The adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989 can be considered as a final step. Although the Convention is about state-child relations, NGOs working on behalf of children have been discussing how organizations can help promote and realize the rights of children. This article is a reference to this discussion and attempts to operationalize the provisions of the Convention to facilitate their implementation at the level of individual institutions and organizations working for children. The authors base themselves on the 6 principles derived from the Convention: 1. Approach based on the rights of the child, 2. Participation of children, 3. No discrimination, 4. Child’s best interest, 5. Building on strengths 6. Do not harm.

This essay provides a detailed exploration of interest in the Bible as a literary phenomenon. We start with Frye’s research in order to analyze academic perspectives that studied the Bible as a form of literary criticism. Among these perspectives, it is worth highlighting those that define biblical narrative as the principal element of the Western imaginative tradition. This phenomenon builds a set of interrelations that have shaped our specific literary tradition, imbuing it with this symbiosis between sacred and profane influences. Moving on to a second level of interpretation of the question at hand, we examine the encounter between secular and religious literatures as a consequence of the work initiated by Frye. The philological background of the writer C. S. Lewis is key and unprecedented in shedding light on the frontiers between reality and fantasy in the field of literary studies, as exemplified in The Chronicles of Narnia. The Narnia books allow their readers to experience catharsis. This experience  is foundational for the acquisition and cultivation of some character strengths, as the ancient Greek tradition held and put into practice centuries ago.

The study focuses on the characteristics of strengths-based model in the form of psychological and social resources of the disabled student. The analysis takes into consideration the effects of interpersonal relations in the academic context, as well as the outcomes of the disabled student support system implemented at Siedlce University. The study is based on the assumption that assistance and support elements of the programme are pivotal for the disabled student’s sense of support of the disabled student. According to the premises of positive psychology, the characteristics that constitute the strengths of an individual were singled out. The respondents, who were Siedlce University students, were asked to assess the increase of their competences, the senseof development of potential, as well as the feeling of fulfilment and control over their own lives. The sum of these elements was treated as the total assessment of the psychological and social resources that students have at their disposal. To determine statistically significant differences between the assessment of particular features of the model in the perception of the disabled and able-bodied student, a linear regression analysis and a one-factor analysis of variance were carried out. It was found that students with disabilities obtained higher means with regard to the sense of increase in competence and the feeling of support than those without disabilities, where these differences were statistically significant. The able-bodied respondents significantly assessed the feeling of control over their own lives more than the disabled students. As far as the sense of development of their own potential and the feeling of fulfilment are concerned, the means for both respondent groups did not differ statistically significantly. The evaluation of the inclusion model, i.e. psychological and social resources, was identified to be at the same level in both groups. On the basis of the linear regression analysis, it could be stated that all features of the strengths-based model correlate strongly positively with the feeling of received support. The results of the present study point to the conclusion that the inclusive model integrating disabled students with their able peers, academic teachers, and administration personnel, which has been applied at Siedlce University (Poland) for over 50 years, brings certain positive effects not only for the disabled student but also for the one without any deficits.
W badaniach uwzględniono cechy modelu mocnych stron – w postaci zasobów psychospołecznych studentów, w tym osób z niepełnosprawnością. W analizie zwrócono uwagę na skutki oddziaływań interpersonalnych na studentów z niepełnosprawnością w ramach całego systemu wspomagającego, funkcjonującego w Uniwersytecie Przyrodniczo-Humanistycznym w Siedlcach (dalej: Uczelnia). Przyjęto założenie, że elementy pomocowe i wspomagające studentów zależą od odczuwanego przez niego wsparcia Następnie, zgodnie z koncepcją psychologii pozytywnej, wyodrębniono te cechy, które stanowią o mocnych stronach jednostki. Zaproponowano studentowi ocenę wzrostu własnych kompetencji, poczucia: rozwoju potencjałów, spełnienia i kontroli nad własnym życiem. Elementy te poprzez zsumowanie określono jako model mocnych stron. Stanowi on ocenę zasobów psychospołecznych, jakimi dysponuje jednostka. Przeprowadzono analizę regresji liniowej oraz test jednoczynnikowej analizy wariancji, w celu zaobserwowania istotnych różnic w percypowaniu poszczególnych cech modelu przez studenta z niepełnosprawnością i – pozbawionego deficytów. Studenci z niepełnosprawnościami uzyskali istotnie statystycznie wyższą średnią w aspekcie poczucia wzrostu kompetencji i poczucia wsparcia niż studenci nieprzejawiający deficytów. Studenci, którzy są sprawni i nie przejawiają żadnych deficytów statystycznie istotnie wyżej ocenili kontrolę nad własnym życiem niż studenci z niepełnosprawnościami. W odniesieniu do poczucia rozwoju własnego potencjału oraz poczucia spełnienia średnie w obydwu grupach nie różniły się od siebie istotnie statystycznie. Ocena modelu włączającego, czyli zasobów psychospołecznych, została zidentyfikowana na jednakowym poziomie w obydwu grupach. Na podstawie regresji liniowej można stwierdzić ze wszystkie cechy modelu mocnych stron silnie, dodatnio korelują z poczuciem wsparcia. Wyniki badań pozwalają na przypuszczenie, że proponowany w Uniwersytecie Przyrodniczo-Humanistycznym w Siedlcach od prawie 30 lat model kształcenia włączającego, integrujący studenta z niepełnosprawnością z rówieśnikami, wykładowcami oraz pracownikami administracyjnymi, przynosi określone pozytywne skutki nie tylko studentom z niepełnosprawnościami, ale także studentom nieprzejawiającym deficytów.
