Municipalities, with a view to meeting their obligation to ensure care for stray animals, mainly limited themselves to catching them and placing in shelters (or, in cases where it was not possible to ensure shelters, in other places destined for keeping animals with no veterinary supervision, though), where new owners were searched for those animals. However, as it was diagnosed in the findings of the audit conducted by NIK in 2016 on prevention of stray animals, those measures resulted in an increased number of stray animals in shelters and other places, and in growing expenditures on providing care for them.

The protozoan Neospora caninum (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae), respectively infects canids and ruminants as the most definitive and intermediate hosts. A diagnosis of neosporosis is generally made on the basis of clinical signs together with the detection of high levels of antibodies in serum. The present study compares the serum electrolyte profile (Ca, K, Mg, Na, P) and serum enzyme level (ALP, AST, CPK) of non-infected dogs with those of stray dogs naturally infected with N. caninum. The indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) revealed that 17 of the 137 analysed serum samples (12.41%) of the stray dogs were seropositive (Sp) to N. caninum. Serum levels of theelectrolytes and the enzymes were evaluated in the 17 Sp and 28 seronegative (Sn, 20.44%) dogs using common enzyme kits, spectrophotometry and flame photometry techniques. The average serum level of ALP, AST, and CPK were found to be significantly higher in the Sp stray dogs. Measurements of the average serum levels of Ca, K, Mg, and P were higher in Sp than Sn stray dogs, with the average K level being significantly higher in seropositive stray dogs. It was concluded that evaluation of serum enzyme and electrolyte levels may be used to screen N. caninum infection in stray dogs.

Mechaniczne zużycie szyn jest zjawiskiem znanym i opisywanym w literaturze, a także widocznym w torowisku dla postronnego obserwatora. Zelektryfikowanie prądem stałym transportu szynowego wywołuje w torowisku dodatkowe zagrożenia w stosunku do szyn. W literaturze technicznej istnieje wiele pozycji dotyczących oddziaływania prądów błądzących na podziemną metalową infrastrukturę oraz sposobom ochrony tych konstrukcji. W niniejszym artykule zwrócono uwagę na fakt, że prądy błądzące przyczyniają się również do zużycia – zmiany geometrii szyn – w miejscach innych niż główka szyny. Podano przykłady takiego zużycia oraz warunki jakie muszą wystąpić, aby skutki zjawiska prądów błądzących mogły się uwidocznić.
Mechanical wear of rails is a phenomenon known and described in the literature and also visible in the track for an outside observer. The electrification by direct current of rail transport causes additional hazards in the track in relation to the rails. In the technical literature, there are many items regarding the impact of currents straying on underground metal infrastructure and ways to protect these structures. In this work, attention is paid to the fact that stray currents also contribute to wear – changes in the geometry of rails – in places other than the rail head. Examples of such wear are given to the conditions that must occur in order for the effects of stray currents to become visible.

The paper presents methods for analyzing the impact of stray currents generated by DC electric traction on nearby earth-return circuits (pipelines). Various simulation models were developed and compared. First the current and potential of the rail were determined using two models. A model with distributed parameters and a model with lumped parameters consisting of chain-connected two-ports of the π type, for which the potential values in the nodes and currents in the branches were determined using the node potential method. The results obtained were used to further analyze the interaction between the railway rail and the pipeline. The pipeline model is presented in the form of a chain connection of π type two-ports. To determine the impact of stray currents on the pipeline, an analysis of the electric field in its vicinity was carried out. For this purpose, two methods have been developed. First, the analysis of the distribution of the scalar potential in the ground for a rail section of finite length was performed. Second method required taking into account the mutual conductivity of the two circuits (rail and pipeline), which in connection with the knowledge of the leakage current from the rail made it possible to determine the potential of the tested pipeline (using controlled voltage sources). The paper presents the implementation of methods and a comparison of the results obtained. The usefulness and applicability of the developed models for the analysis of the impact of stray currents from DC electric traction on earth-return circuits were also assessed.

W artykule przedstawiono zarys prac związanych z oddziaływaniem trakcji elektrycznej prądu stałego i przyjętego systemu ochrony podziemnej konstrukcji metra w Warszawie przed prądami błądzącymi. Podano różnice jakie występują w systemie ochrony na I i II linii metra. Omówiono struktury systemu rejestracji oddziaływań prądów błądzących na konstrukcje metra oraz fazy przejścia z rejestracji do monitoringu na całym eksploatowanym już odcinku. Podano stosowane kryteria oceny układu połączeń w systemie ochrony przed prądami błądzącymi. Wraz z rozbudową metra następowały opisane w artykule modernizacje systemu monitoringu usprawniające proces zbierania i archiwizowania danych. Opisano sygnalizację występowania niekorzystnych stanów pracy sieci powrotnej przez system monitoringu. W artykule omówiono modyfikacje wprowadzane na liniach metra i adaptacje systemu monitorowania do zmieniających się warunków.
In this article an overview of works related to DC electric traction as well as stray current protection systems were described. Differences between first and second metro lines were shown. An overview of stray current monitoring system structure was shown, step-by-step upgrades from registration to monitoring system on the entire line were described. Evaluation criteria of the connection arrangement in the protection system was shown. Expansion of the metro system was accompanied by the mentioned modernizations of the stray current monitoring system, data acquisition and storage was upgraded. Signaling system of undesirable states in the return circuit captured by the monitoring system was described. The article describes modifications of the system on both metro lines and its adaptations to the changing conditions.

In this paper the external magnetic stray field is investigated in transformers realized on gapped toroids with a rectangular cross section. An analytical method is used in which the field distribution is calculated by means of orthogonal expansion. As a conclusion it is shown that optimum EMC design for the case of a flyback converter is given by the results for a simple inductor. In case of a load resonant converter minimum parasitic induction is obtained, if the winding conducting maximum current is located exactly above the air gap. The second winding has to be located as close as possible to the first one with respect to the desired value of the total leakage inductance.

The aim of the present work is the influence of stray currents on transport systems, especially rail and city systems. Therefore, a study was conducted that simulated flow of stray currents on elements of the transportation system. Steel DOMEX, which has enhanced resistance to corrosion, was used as research material. It is rarely understood that transport systems can have reciprocal negative effects on each other. For example, the urban and long-distance rail transport systems influence the transmission systems (gas pipelines, information systems). A side effect of the functioning of railways is the formation of stray currents, which cause electrochemical corrosion in all undergrounded metal components. It has been demonstrated that the impact of stray currents on the metal parts is of corrosive nature, and their effects can be presented graphically and numerically. It has also been proven that the anodic potential causes a greater loss than the cathodic potential. Furthermore, the exposure to the elements, both in the process of corrosion and erosion, accelerates the destruction of the material.

The analysis of the cultural and settlement situation in the Upper San River basin in the Late Roman Period and the early phase of the Migration Period (timespan between phases C2 and D) is difficult due to the small database. In addition to materials from the partially researched settlement in Lesko and recently excavated (during the investment works on the bypass of Sanok) settlement in Sanok 59-60, the materials from these phases are primarily stray finds, such as metal fragments of clothing, such as buckles or coins, discovered outside the archaeological context. It is important to underline that most of the wheel-made pottery finds have a wide chronological frame and it is a rare possibility to narrow pottery dating. Despite the limited amount of data, they provide the basis for the new analysis of the archaeological material and settlement situation in this area dated roughly to the Late Roman Period and Early Migration Period. In this context, wide-scale research, which for the first time allowed observation of the extent and organization of settlements, proved to be particularly important.

The current legal regulations regarding property and animals that have been found calls for changes of both legal and system nature. The binding rules and proceedings related to stray animals are especially unsatisfying. The rule that regulations on property items, including those found, should be applied also to animals results in excessive doubts, often hard to resolve, practical and theoretical alike. After all, in case of animals, humanitarian considerations should prevail to civil and legal aspects. At the same time, in practice it is very difficult to find the owner of a found animal, because there is no obligation to tag animals. As a result animals – until they are given to new owners – are maintained in animal shelters at the cost of local self-governments. This incurs substantial expenditures from public funds, and is not beneficial to animals as such.

The paper presents a method of the simulation of electrical effects of stray currents from d.c. tracrion of complex geometry. In the method the equivalent rail is considered as an earth return circuit. The models of the equivalent rail with current energization and the concept of superposition allow one to consider more complicated d.c. railway systems using a segmental approximation of the complex railway route and taking into account a number of substations and loads at any location. It is assumed in the paper that the system considered is linear, that the earth is homogeneous medium of finite conductivity and that the effects of currents in nearby underground metal installations on the potential generated in the earth by track currents (primary earth potential) can be disregarded. An extensive parametric analysis to examine the roles of various factors, which affect the primary earth potential caused by stray currents, may be performed using simulation program developed. The technical application of the method presented, which can be useful at design stage e.g. of metal structures buried in the stray currents area, is illustrated by examples of computer simulation.

Introduction and objective. The main source of many zoonoses is soil contaminated with feline and canine faeces. Thus, the aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of intestinal parasites in stray dogs and cats adopted in Lodz shelter (Poland). Materials and methods. In total, 163 faecal samples were collected from 95 dogs and 68 cats from 2011 to 2012. The samples were processed by sedimentation techniques using Mini Parasep®SF. Results. Six parasite genera belonging to protozoa, cestoda, and nematoda, were found in dogs, while eight were found in cats. Out of the 163 fecal samples, 37.4% were positive for the presence at least one species of intestinal parasites. The majority of positive dog samples contained eggs from Toxocara and Trichuris genera, and the family Ancylostomatidae, while Toxocara and Taenia eggs, as well as Cystoisospora oocysts, predominated in cat faeces. A significantly higher prevalence of parasites was noted in cats (48.5%) than in dogs (29.5%) (χ2=6.15, P=0.013). The Toxocara genus was the most prevalent parasite in both populations; eggs were found in 27.9% and 16.8% of cats and dogs, respectively. Animals younger than 12 months of age showed higher infection rates with Toxocara, but differences were not statistically significant. The average numbers of Toxocara eggs/gram of faeces in positive puppy and kitten samples were over 5 and 7 times higher than in older dogs and cats, respectively. Mixed infection were found in dogs (5.3%) and cats (8.8%). Conclusions. Cat faeces represent a more important potential source of environmental contamination with zoonotic parasites than dog faeces. Among the detected parasites of stray dogs and cats, Toxocara present an important zoonotic risk for the local human population, especially children.
