Opis:
The research was carried out in 2018 at the experimental station of the University of Life Sciences in Poznań. The plants of the strawberry variety Albion were exposed to sub-zero temperatures in the white bud phase and in full bloom. The possibility of mitigating the results of strawberries subjected to thermal stress was investigated using the Terra-Sorb complex biostimulator with a high content of amino acids. The intensity of flowering, the number, weight and area of strawberry leaves, the number of fruits on a bush and their quality parameters such as fruit weight, extract content and firmness were analysed. It was established that the impact of the sub-zero temperature on strawberry shrubs, regardless of the development phase of the plant, the number of inflorescences and healthy flowers was reduced significantly, the number of fruits, their average weight and firmness decreased. The use of the biostimulator on plants exposed to temperatures from -2 to -3 °C contributed to increasing the number of healthy strawberry flowers by several percentage points, the number of fruits per plant and increased their average weight significantly. The extract content in strawberries remained unchanged.

This study evaluated the development of above and under ground parts of strawberry plants cvs. 'Fern' and 'Camarosa1 in a glasshouse using perlite, forest soil, finpeat, peat, finpeat+perlite (1:1) and peat+perlite (1:1) as substrates. The effects of different growing media on development of above and under ground parts of plant were statistically significant. The highest number of primary roots per plant, length of the most developed roots and number of crowns per runner were obtained from perlite, finpeat+perlite and peat medium, respectively, in both cultivars. The runner length, number of runners per plant, leaf area, fresh root weight and dry root weight varied between cultivars according to growth medium. In general peat, finpeat or finpeat+perlite gave the best results in terms of above and under ground parts of plants in both cultivars. Some important properties such as water retention capacity, cation exchangeable capacity, pH, porosity etc. of growing media using in this study were also determined.

Manipulating the light characteristics with LEDs (light-emitting diodes) allows the regulation of various aspects of plant growth and development. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of supplementary irradiation with LEDs emitting blue, red or far-red light on the growth, chlorophyll content, and photosynthetic activity of in vitro-derived plants of two strawberry cultivars with different photoperiod requirements, short-day cultivar ‘Elsanta’ and photoneutral cultivar ‘Selva’. Supplementary irradiation with blue light significantly affected the growth parameters of plants of the photoneutral strawberry ‘Selva’, but had no effect on the growth of ‘Elsanta’ plants. Exposure to blue light did not affect the chlorophyll content index (CCI) or the maximum efficiency of the photochemical reaction of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) of any strawberry cultivars. Red and far-red light supplementary irradiation did not significantly affect plant growth, but it improved the Fv/Fm parameter in both strawberry cultivars after 57 days of the experiment. Irradiation with red and far-red light inhibited the formation of runners, while blue light limited their development by 50%.

Strawberries were the fruit that the Modernists and Modernism were very fond of. It thus should not be a surprise that strawberries also feature in Modernist prose texts of Katherine Mansfield. Although they make their appearance only in a couple of stories, and then merely for a brief moment, they should not by any means be treated as mere tiny blots belonging to the background. For when we take a closer look at them it turns out that, as is usually the case with Mansfield’s short stories, there is more to it than meets the eye. Seemingly unimportant, often unnoticed and therefore frequently underestimated, this small, sweet, red and fragrant fruit makes a significant statement in every text it is mentioned.

Opis:
Technological progress in the cultivation of horticultural and fruit plants makes the use of soil becoming less and less important. Growing plants in soilless substrates is becoming more and more common. The aim of the study was to determine the variability of the mineral composition of fruits and leaves of everbearing strawberry of the San Andreas® variety in soilless cultivation. Research was carried out at the experimental plantation of Polski Instytut Truskawki Sp. z o.o. (geographical coordinates: 50°02′11″N and 19°81′19″E). The cultivation of everbearing strawberry of the San Andreas® variety was carried out in a gutter system under covers in coconut substrate. The stability of the chemical composition of strawberry leaves and fruits depends on fertilisation, weather factors, and the quality of water used for fertigation. Despite maintaining the content of nutrient in the rhizosphere at the level recommended for organic substrates, low potassium and calcium content and high magnesium content in strawberry leaves were determined. Among the macroelements analysed in strawberry leaves, the lowest variation coefficient values were found for nitrogen, magnesium and calcium, and in fruits – for nitrogen, phosphorus, and magnesium. The highest variation coefficients were obtained for phosphorus and sodium in strawberry leaves, and for sulphur and sodium in strawberry fruits. Variation coefficient values of copper, zinc, and manganese content in leaves were similar. The content of iron in leaves and zinc in fruits was characterised by the lowest variation coefficients during the growing period.

The influence of the addition of Potassium Ekosorb to black soil and sandy soil on water content in soils, gas exchange in leaves and yielding of strawberry plants cultivar Senga Sengana, Dukat, Kent and Elsanta was estimated in a field experiment. The obtained results show that the addition of hydrogel increased content of water in both types of soil; however, the effect was on average twice higher in black soil than in sandy soil. The highest stomatal conductance of leaves, photosynthesis and transpiration were observed in plants cultivated in both black and sandy soil with the addition of 3 g dm⁻³ of hydrogel. The addition of higher dose influenced in an ambiguous way on the values of analyzed features of leaves. Yet, regardless of the applied dose of Ekosorb, the stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis of plants cultivated in black soil were 1.8–2.9 times higher than in sandy soil. The highest yields of fruit on both types of soil were obtained from plants which took advantage of presence of 3 g dm⁻³ of hydrogel. The application of 6 g dm⁻³ influenced on decreasing of plant yields. The weakest reaction on both types of soil occurred in strawberry cultivar Elsanta.
W doświadczeniu polowym badano wpływ dodatku Ekosorbu potasowego do czarnej ziemi i gleby piaszczystej na zawartość wody w glebach, przebieg wymiany gazowej w liściach i plonowanie roślin truskawki odmian Senga Sengana, Dukat, Kent i Elsanta. Najwyższą przewodność szparkową liści, transpirację i fotosyntezą wykazywały rośliny uprawiane w czarnej ziemi i glebie piaszczystej z dodatkiem 3 g dm⁻³ hydrożelu.

Opis:
Strawberry plants showing symptoms of leaf spots and petiole lesions were collected from El Qalubya governorate, which is one of the most famous areas that extensively grows strawberry in Egypt. The objectives of this study were to isolate and characterize the causal pathogen of the disease. The isolated pathogen was identified as Paramyrothecium roridum (formerly known as Myrothecium roridum) based on its morphological characteristics and sequencing the partial rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS). A pathogenicity test using detached leaf assay revealed that P. roridum is a potential pathogen of strawberry. Symp- toms started as small necrotic areas which expanded rapidly to macerate whole leaflets and petioles. In advanced stages of infection, dark olive green sporodochia were clearly distinguished on the infected tissues. Six strawberry cultivars showed different levels of susceptibility to P. roridum. Florida was the most resistant cultivar while Beauty, Camarosa, Fortuna and Sweet Charlie were susceptible. Festival showed a moderate level of suscep- tibility. An in vitro assay on the effect of the liquid culture filtrate of P. roridum on straw- berry leaves showed that the filtrate caused damage to tissues and clear necrotic symptoms were developed. High performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) analysis on the filtrate of 10 day old P. roridum culture revealed the presence of various mycotoxins. The two major toxins detected were 8-alpha-hydroxyroridin H and myrothecin A in addition to other tri- chothecenes. Data also revealed the capability of P. roridum to produce polygalacturonase (PG) and cellulase (Cx) enzymes in liquid cultures. The activity of PG was found to be sig- nificantly correlated with the age of the growth culture. This is the first record of P. roridum on strawberry in Egypt.

Opis:
Long term investigations revealed that cultivation of strawberries (Fragaria magna Thuill.) for 10 years continuously in one plot reduces their vitality: the number of the produced runners decreases by 41%, of leaves – by 30%, form only 28% of inflorescence, the yield reduces by 50% in comparison with strawberries grown for two years in a new plot. Evident decline in the vitality and productivity of strawberries was detected during 4th–6th years of cultivation. Unequal reaction of the tested cultivars upon the durability of cultivation was noticed; strawberries of the cultivar ‘Senga Sengana’ reacted slightly, while the ones of the cultivar ‘Nida’ – strongly. It is related with different sensibility of these cultivars towards the disease agents of root rots. It was determined that long-term cultivation of the Fragaria genus plants results in the accumulation of the parasitic fungi propagules in soil: Ascochyta fragaricola, Cercospora fragariae, Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, Perenospora fragariae, Phytophthora cactorum, Pythium intermedium, P. ultimum, Plasmodiophora brassicae, Sclerotium rolfsii, Verticillium alboatrum. Therefore, cultivation of strawberries in the same plot for longer time increases the phytopathogenic potential of soil, and short interval (1–2 years) between planting has little significance upon it. The second reason for low productivity of strawberries cultivated for a long in one plot is soil tiredness caused by fungi, synthesising and excreting into surrounding toxic secondary metabolites, widespread in the rhizosphere, especially those belonging to the Penicillium genus: P. janthinellum, P. verruculosum var. verrucosum, P. canescens, P. spinulosum.
Najczęściej do obniżenia wzrostu i plonowania truskawki dochodzi w 4–6 roku uprawy.

Applicable legal regulations allow Polish farmers to sell agricultural produce and products made from them. This activity enables the creation of a new market of natural food, which is competitive in relation to industrially produced food. The aim of the research was to compare the quality of strawberry jam available on the market with its counterpart produced on farms. The studies compared the extract content and sensory quality of 11 strawberry jams available in retail with jam from the Kashubian Strawberry certified with EU PGI. The content of the extract and intensity of 17 sensory markers characterising the appearance, consistency, taste and aftertaste of strawberry jam were assessed. The study was conducted using quantitative descriptive analysis – QDA. The strawberry jam which was compared was characterized by a very large diversity of sensory characteristics in terms of brightness, opacity, colour intensity of red and softness. The smaller variation was characterised by an intensity of features relating to elasticity, acidic and chemical taste as well as sweet, dry and fruity aftertaste. Industrial jams were similar in terms of quite a perceptible sweet taste and viscosity and average perceptible fruit taste. The jam obtained from the Kashubian Strawberry was not inferior to the quality of industrial-grade jam. It stood out in comparison with a high content of extract, attractive red colour and greater softness. Compared to commercial jams, it had a higher intensity of fruity, sweet and sour taste, and a distinctly fruity aftertaste, with no foreign notes.
Obowiązujące przepisy prawne umożliwiają polskim rolnikom sprzedaż płodów rolnych i produktów z nich wytworzonych. Działalność ta pozwala tworzyć nowy rynek naturalnej żywności, konkurencyjnej w stosunku do żywności produkowanej przemysłowo, cechującej się krótkim łańcuchem dostaw i łatwą identyfikowalnością wytwórcy.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to present findings on the construction of the image of the poor in the influential Polish news magazine “Polityka”. The data were analyzed using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) methodology. According to the CDA’s perspective the mass-media are important agents in the processes of constructing the dominant vision of social reality. The creation of a particular account of social reality is influenced by the social position, interests and aims of the discourse’s “producers”. The research revealed four strategies playing an important role in constructing the image of the poor. The first strategy is situated in a wider perspective of a critique of the public welfare regime. It presumes that providing direct help to the poor has negative consequences such as forming “welfare mentality” in the recipients, making them dependent on the help they receive and thus reducing their chances to become productive citizens. The second strategy is that of defining “social exclusion” as an unchanging state, in which the frontier separating the excluded from the rest of the society is a social constant, separating “health” from “sickness”. As a result, the marginalization of the poor is seen as a natural process. The third strategy is that of dehumanization using objectifying descriptions. The fourth is the "politics of visibility” that aims to present the lives of the poor using “popular ethnography” that invariably presents a dehumanized vision of the Polish poor. The main effect of the four presented strategies is the division of the poor into those who “deserve” and “do not deserve” the help they are given. This, in contrast with the stated progressive aims of the analyzed articles, helps to legitimize rather than question the inequalities and social stratification of the Polish society.

Strawberry is a species sensitive to water shortages, especially during fruit growth and ripening. One method of limiting water loss in plant production involves the use of antitranspirants, which reduce plant transpiration. One method of limiting water loss in plant production involves the use of antitranspirants, which reduce plant transpiration. One of substances used for this purpose is, amongst others, natural terpene polymer di-1-p-menthene (pinolene). Research on the influence of a pinolene-containing antitranspirant (with the commercial name of Vapor Gard) on gas exchange parameters (intensity of net CO2 assimilation, intensity of transpiration, stomatal conductance for water, substomatal CO2 concentration), the water balance and the content of assimilation pigments (chlorophyll “a”, “b”, total chlorophyll, carotenoids) in the leaves of the cv. ‘Salsa’ strawberry was conducted in the years 2009–2010. The antitranspirant was used once at a concentration of 0.75% before flowering. The measurements were performed four times: before flowering (1st measurement date), when the plants were in full flowering (2nd measurement date), in the middle of the harvest season (3rd measurement date) and after the end of the harvest season (4th measurement date). Foliar application of the Vapor Gard antitranspirant decreases the intensity of strawberry transpiration without changing the CO2 assimilation activity. Plants sprayed with the tested preparation were characterised by a higher relative water content (RWC) in leaves and a higher value of the photosynthetic index of water use efficiency (WUE). The antitranspirant did not influence the content of assimilation pigments in straw-berry leaves. The values of the determined physiological features depended on the measurement date (developmental stage) of the tested strawberry cultivar.

Opis:
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been synthesized in the presence of Strawberry fruit extract (SBFE) at room temperature. The synthesized AgNPs was characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, SEM, EDS, XRD, TEM and FTIR. The UV-vis spectra of the AgNPs show SPR band at 450 nm. TEM results indicate that AgNPs are spherical in shape and size range between 7–65 nm. Antibacterial activity of the synthesized AgNPs has been assessed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus licheniformis. The results show that AgNPs exhibit inhibitory effect and effect is a function of AgNPs concentration. The antibacterial activity of the prepared AgNPs has been compared with two antibiotics, amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin. It is found that the antibiotics perform better than AgNPs.

Opis:
The aim of the experiment was to examine the effects of silicon (Si) on the growth and cropping of strawberry plants (Fragaria ananassa) and on the quality of the fruit. The study was conducted in 2013–2015 in the Experimental Orchard in Dąbrowice, belonging to the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice. The experimental objects were plants of the strawberry cultivars ‘Elkat’ and ‘Elsanta’, growing in a podsolic soil, low in humus, with the granulometric composition of light loam in the surface layer and with an average level of available nutrients. The experiment was designed in randomized blocks with three replications. An experimental plot was comprised of 20 strawberry plants planted at a spacing of 0.25 m × 1.0 m. The plants were treated with silicic acid, potassium silicate and calcium silicate. The preparations were applied annually to the soil in early spring (before the beginning of vegetation) at a dose of 90 kg Si per ha. Control plants were not treated with silicon. The results of the experiment were analysed statistically using the analysis of variance method. The differences between means were evaluated with Duncan’s test (p = 0.05). The results showed different responses of the tested strawberry cultivars to the silicon preparations used. In the case of ‘Elsanta’, the highest fruit yield was recorded in the plots where calcium silicate or potassium silicate were applied to the soil. It was also found that the use of potassium silicate, calcium silicate, and silicic acid reduced the occurrence of grey mould on the fruit of the cultivar ‘Elsanta’, but the differences as compared to the control were not statistically significant. The plants of the strawberry cultivar ‘Elkat’ treated with silicic acid produced the highest fruit yields, and the fruits were the least affected by grey mould. None of the silicon preparations affected the chlorophyll content of the leaves. It was also found that the use of the silicon preparations had no impact on the refractometric index of the fruits or their firmness. In both cultivars, the plants treated with silicic acid produced fruit with the highest Si content. The silicon content of the leaves of the tested strawberry cultivars was different for the individual years of the study. Depending on the year, the highest silicon content was found in the leaves of the plants treated with calcium silicate and silicic acid. Preparations containing silicon can be used in the commercial production of strawberry to reduce the occurrence of grey mould, but they cannot completely replace the chemical plant protection products designed for this purpose.
