The blind and visually impaired are one of the groups prone to stigma. Stigma imposed by social environment may lead to self-stigma, that is expressing negative opinions about oneself as a result of the carried sigma. Self-stigma usually develops in three stages: first the stigmatised person realizes that they have been stereotyped, then they accept the stereotype and finally apply it to themselves. Thus, to develop selfstigma, the person has to be aware that they are perceived by the society in a stereotypical way (a blind person is usually perceived as passive, dependent and reliant on other people’s help), accept it and acknowledge themselves that this is their real image. Not every visually impaired person is will develop self-stigma. The article presents selected factors and preventive measures that may reduce the risk of self-stigma.

Opis:
A specific character of HIV/AIDS has caused numerous complications either medical, legal or social. HIV infection exposes its carriers to frequent acts of intolerance or stigma by the healthy part of the population. Negative social consequences found after detection and disclosure of HIV perfectly match the theory of stigma by Goffman. This theory elucidates mechanisms of stigma or self – stigma affecting these members of the society that via their behavior or life style break the basic social, moral and religious norms. Despite numerous achievements, this disease cannot be overcome completely. People living with HIV/AIDS are still stigmatized and discriminated in the society. They suffer being rejected and isolated by a family, partners and friends. The results demonstrated in the present review, obtained from the examinations conducted among people with HIV/AIDS, in Poland and abroad, attesting stigma, discrimination, low evaluation of the quality of life are the basis for further in-depth studies concerning this issue. This must reinforce educational efforts which will constrain inequality of people with HIV/AIDS, in Poland and abroad. The aim of this study is to inform and sensitize a recipient about stigma among people with HIV/AIDS.

This article is an attempt to apply the conceptual framework of social stigma and some specific strategies of coping with stigma, for the interpretations of interviews with young Jehovah’s Witnesses, representing high schools from Bialystok. According to several studies, the followers of the Watchtower Society – compared to members of other churches and religious – are faced with the most negative reactions of social audience, not only in Poland but also in other countries around the world. The presence of religion class in Polish schools produces specific conditions, in which the student religious identity becomes visible. Therefore, everyday classroom experiences of such students can be – compared to catholic majority and other religious minorities – much more difficult, involving not only potential negative stereotyping, but also the problem of how to deal with the school structural conditions, sometimes clearly being in conflict with the requirements of the Jehovah’s Witnesses religion.

Opis:
At the beginning the paper introduces the role of patient and the four features of the role, as formulated by T. Parsons and E. Freidson in their sociology works. Based on this concept of the role of the patient, the text argues in favour of recognising the mental illness as a real illness. (This recognition is not obvious and is often disputed.) Next, the paper explains the phenomenon of prejudices, and how they are formed. It is related to the stereotypes and the process of categorisation, and therefore the work presents these terms as well. Some specific examples of prejudice both against the mentally ill and psychiatry as such are also introduced. In the last chapter, the issue of stigma and stigmatisation related to the mental illness is presented. The focus is made on the etymology of the word “stigma” and its current use. The paper aims at clarifying the social status of the mentally ill, who suffer not only from their disease, but also from the above mentioned negative social phenomena such as prejudices and stigmatisation.

On May 26, 2016, the police raided 43 cannabis dispensaries in Toronto, Canada, making 90 arrests. This article aims to describe the narrative of the responsible state agencies concerning the police raid and compare it to the narrative of those who opposed it, such as activists, as well as consumers and sellers of cannabis. While such concepts as moral entrepreneur, moral panic, and moral crusade have traditionally been used to study those in power, I will employ them to explore both the state narrative and ways in which counterclaims-makers resisted it. In order to do so, I will further develop the concept of moral entrepreneurship and its characteristics by relating it to studies of moral panics and social problems. This article will be guided by the following question: How did each party socially construct its cannabis narrative, and in what way can we use the concept of moral entrepreneurship to describe and analyze these narratives as social constructions? I have investigated the media coverage of the raid and ethnographically studied shops in Toronto in order to study the narratives. My findings show that both parties used a factual neutral style, as well as a dramatizing style. The later includes such typical crusading strategies as constructing victims and villains and presenting the image of a dystopian social world. In order to explain the use of these strategies, we will relate them to the shifting wider social and historical context and to the symbolic connotation of cannabis shops in Toronto in particular and in Canada as a whole.

Language is one of the elements that create reality. The following paper aims at showing the role of particular languages in constructing the image of disability. Speaking in a parti-cular way, people portray different items, persons etc. The process of the construction may result in shaping varied attitudes and emerging different labels. The paper is a comparison of words used in the eld of disability in two countries: Poland and the United States. The vocabulary comes from two sources: in the case of Poland it is the website niepelnosprawni.plwhile in the case of the United States – the resources of Disability History Museum, which are available online. There are two reference points for the analysis. The first one is the Stigma concept by Erving Goffman. It implies stereotyping and labeling. On the other side there is the Other – the idea by Emmanuel Levinas. In turn, the basis of his approach are respect and love. The paper aims at demonstrating in which country the vocabulary used is closer to the Levinas` theory. It is also a try to show where the usage of words may be more challenging.

In this paper I analyze the phenomenon of parents’ managing the stigma of their child’s disability. Using Erving Goffman’s concept of stigma, I point to its usefulness in understanding the management of stigma by parents of children with intellectual disability. I also stress the usefulness of the category of stigma in the context of how the parents work on their identity. The results of research indicate that the parents of children with a disability live with a sense of stigma in regard to their children. Parents adopt various ways of managing this stigma in connection with whether their child’s disability is visible or not. Managing stigma may involve revealing or concealing a child’s disability. In the research, qualitative techniques were used, with special emphasis on an unstructured interview. Data analysis was performed in accordance with the procedures of grounded theory.

Opis:
Existence outside of marriage associated, especially in the case of women, with the lack of children carries an almost universal stigma. It has historically been perceived as a violation of social norms and a danger to local communities and states. In the latest couple of decades, a growing number of studies focused on the stereotypes and stigma of singlehood, but not many of them addressed the issues of stereotype formation and the etiology of stigma related to never-married people. This paper explores the relationship between Romanian terms referring to never-married people and the local socio-demographic context from a historical perspective. It also makes a few cultural-comparative remarks to show that, as it is said, language mirrors culture and society. The number and the linguistic form of the available words for men and women who did not marry reflect society’s concerns at one point in time or another. The way the language is used affects the persistence of category representation and the consensualisation of stereotypes. Finally, this paper supports the idea that historical, multidisciplinary and comparative approaches provide a better understanding of social and cultural realities.

It is very important what is the public perception of unemployment, what public opinion says about it, what say about it politicians, academics or journalists. It has influence on self-estimation of people affected by the phenomenon, it has also a great importance for the social interactions and the policy against it. The unemployment can be treated as a natural or as a feigned problem and unemployed people can be treated in a stereotypical way as not very active and not very resourceful. Studies show that reality is different from the social knowledge of it. Fortunately there is a possibility to change public opinions, to improve the image, and bring it closer to reality. The Catholic Church is one of the social actors that can take part in achieving this goal. Contrary to the stereotypical perception every human is threaten as individuality. In its doctrine Catholic Church treats unemployment as a negative phenomenon, in every situation it is a waste of human capital.

This qualitative, longitudinal study directs attention to how adolescence – a time period that is already fraught with pressures and struggles for most – may be complicated by the presence of hirsutism, a putatively “sexdiscordant” marker. Attention is directed to the school-based experiences of a non-representative sample of 67 Canadian youth and 41 adult women who shared their recollections of how hirsutism had impacted their lives as adolescents. Although hirsute youth may seem well-situated to act as the trailblazers for the type of subversive crossings that Butler (1990) championed in Gender Trouble, our study find little to suggest that they would welcome this role. Rather, the obverse seems true. However, given the dependent status of adolescents in Western society, it might be entirely presumptuous to expect hirsute youth to behave as if dualistic thinking about sex, gender and sexuality did not exist when so many of their experiences will continuously remind them that it does.

The location of these studies within the interpretative orientation ensures an opportunity to get to know the perspective of the Respondents (in this particular case – the homeless). Work on self-presentation is based on the assumption of symbolic interactionism, according to which the basis of interaction is defining the situation, proceeding through interpretation, so reading the meaning of the partner's action and definition, informing the partner about the intentions of action. Therefore, work on self-presentation is an attempt to read the meaning of a partner's activity, based on a specific way of imagining a partner, and thus – the way of treating him and the mechanisms accompanying work on self-presentation.

Psychological costs, understood as negative emotions, or some kind of psychological discomfort, are the result of differences between the states of the ideal and the real.Ill and disabled people are often subject to negative stereotypes that are unfounded, baseless, unjustified, unfair and harmful. It is very important to prevent stigmatization and social exclusion of these people, but to do this it is needed to diagnose the problem of stigmatization itself.

Introduction and aim. This study aims to determine the level of stigma in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and evaluate its relationship with their life satisfaction. Material and methods. This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted in a single tertiary care center. Two hundred and ten patients ≥18 years old diagnosed with T2DM were included in this study. The relationship between the “Type 2 diabetes stigma assessment scale” and the “Satisfaction with life scale” was assessed using Pearson correlation analysis. Results. The average age of the participants was 54.85±15.81 years. The majority of patients reported adherence to diabetes treatment and having comorbidities. Stigma levels were higher in patients ≤65 years, those with less than a high school education, and those receiving insulin or oral anti-diabetic treatment, but lower with a T2DM diagnosis duration of ≤ 5 years (p<0.05). Life satisfaction was influenced by age, education status, economic status, adherence to treatment, dietary compliance, and the presence of comorbidities. A moderately negative relationship between stigma level and life satisfaction was identified. Conclusion. The study’s results indicate that an increase in stigma level is associated with a decrease in life satisfaction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

This paper is concerned with the social and cultural constructions of male rape in voluntary agencies, England. Using sociological, cultural, and post-structural theoretical frameworks, mainly the works of Foucault, I demonstrate the ways in which male rape is constructed and reconstructed in such agencies. Social and power relations, social structures, and time and place shape their discourses, cultures, and constructions pertaining to male rape. This means that constructions of male rape are neither fixed, determined, nor unchanging at any time and place, but rather negotiated and fluid. I theorize the data-which was collected through semi-structured interviews and qualitative questionnaires-including male rape counselors, therapists, and voluntary agency caseworkers. The theoretical and conceptual underpinnings that frame and elucidate the data contribute to sociological understandings of male rape.

It is also a critical reflectionon the irregularities experienced by people, towards whom it is introduced, in terms of institutional isolation. At the same time, by presenting the results of personal research and conclusions, attention is being drawn to the fact that in our society there is an emerging hope for positive changes in the daily treatment of the socially isolated individuals. Yet, there is a constant need for a continuous reinforcement of the public awareness of the fact that the reintegration of these excluded individuals in the community benefits both the parties involvedTaking up the theme of stigma and social exclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities and convicts is considered important and relevant, as this is an issue which remains topical and gives rise to multiple moral dilemmas.

Opis:
Unemployment can be denoted as a social problem or a national concern. Sometimes, it is also presented differently - as a phenomenon that is either natural or illusory. The unemployment discourse conditions the social importance of this problem, and makes it possible to measure the significance and priority given to unemployment. It tells us a lot about the social climate around unemployment. The discourse of unemployment, created by society and functioning within it, is especially vital for the unemployed themselves, for their self-image and the ways in which they understand their own situation. The importance of the public unemployment discourse is also reflected in the state politics and public actions. That is why it is crucial to strive for a truthful description of social reality. The article claims that a discourse based on an in-depth study of the phenomenon can prevent stigmatization and re-evaluate unemployment, contributing to its effective fighting prevention.

Opis:
Otherness, especially in homogeneous societies, often takes on a status of clinical category (psychiatric). The notion of normality (mental health) is derived in such case from statistical norm: it means ordinariness. It is visible in the post-war Poland, the country which is characterised by above-average ethnic homogeneity. Value of tolerance remains here usually a cultural norm, which is difficult to be found in everyday human practice.

Opis:
Przedstawiono złożoną sytuację rodzin chorych psychicznie i znaczenie sieci społecznej w procesie zdrowienia. Wszystko w kontekście zadań i możliwości wspólnoty lokalnej (parafia) i partykularnej (diecezje) Kościoła.
The article, basing on researches, shows how, multidimensional stigmatization has an impact on the process of recovery for mentally ill persons. There is presented the social view of the mentally ill persons and its impact on auto-stigmatization of the patients. There is also described the complex situation of the families of mentally ill persons and the meaning of the “society network” in the recovery process. All these, in the context of responsibilities and possibilities of local (parish) and particular community (diocese) of the Church. Thanks to the stable (theologically, socially and economically) structures of its community, the Church significantly can enrich and stabilize the network of society of the mentally ill patients, what is very important in the process of their recovery and has fundamental impact for their welfare.

The aim of this paper is to present how those individuals whose body has been changed due to disease process (anorexia or oncological pathologies) experience their bodyliness. Authors’ own qualitative research among 10 women with anorexia and 10 who undergone mastectomy is going to be shown. Also potential mechanisms which can cause disordered body image and the phenomenon of self-stigma and self-exclusion in these groups will be consider. In the lights of obtained results, sample women feel embarrassed because of the “imperfect” body they have. The aspect of stigma which women after mastectomy internalized the most is the esthetic value, whereas those with anorexia have much difficulties in interpersonal relationships which leads to self-isolation.

Opis:
This is a book review of the volume edited by Roberta Piazza and Alessandra Fasulo, and entitled Marked Identities. Narrative Lives Between Social Labels and Individual Biographies, Palgrave Macmillan, London-New York, 2015. The book consists of various interviews with individuals whose lives, mainly because of the group to which they belong, could be viewed as ‘marked’. The difference between the idea of ‘stigma’ and the notion ‘marked identity’ is underlined, together with the idea of ‘diversity’, which today is not necessarily something that one should hide but, quite the opposite, something one can be proud of. One of the main ideas of this text is that identity is not a rigid reality but a process, by which individuals negotiate the version of who they are with others.
