Opis:
The paper presents a simple, systematic and novel graphical method which uses computer graphics for prediction of limit cycles in two dimensional multivariable nonlinear system having rectangular hysteresis and backlash type nonlinearities. It also explores the avoidance of such self-sustained oscillations by determining the stability boundary of the system. The stability boundary is obtained using simple Routh Hurwitz criterion and the incremental input describing function, developed from harmonic balance concept. This may be useful in interconnected power system which utilizes governor control. If the avoidance of limit cycle or a safer operating zone is not possible, the quenching of such oscillations may be done by using the signal stabilization technique which is also described. The synchronization boundary is laid down in the forcing signal amplitudes plane using digital simulation. Results of digital simulations illustrate accuracy of the method for 2×2 systems.

Opis:
Proportional integral controller design for two-input two-output (TITO) networked control systems (NCSs) with intrinsic and network-induced time delays is studied in this paper. The TITO NCS consists of two delayed sub-systems coupled in a 1-1/2-2 pairing mode. In order to simplify the controller design, a decoupling method is first applied to obtain a decoupled system. Then, the controllers are designed based on the transfer function matrix of the obtained decoupled system and using the boundary locus method for determining the stability region and the well-known Mikhailov criterion for the stability test. A comparative analysis of the designed controllers and other controllers proposed in previous literature works is thereafter carried out. To demonstrate the validity and efficacy of the proposed method and to show that it achieves better results than other methods proposed in earlier literature works, the implementation in simulation of Wood–Berry distillation column model (methanol–water separation), a well-known benchmark for TITO systems, is carried out.

Opis:
Four years of observations of radon, meteorology and atmospheric pollution was used to demonstrate the efficacy of combined diurnal and synoptic timescale radon-based stability classification schemes in relating atmospheric mixing state to urban air quality in Zgierz, Central Poland. Nocturnal radon measurements were used to identify and remove periods of non-stationary synoptic behaviour (13–18% of each season) and classify the remaining data into five mixing states, including persistent temperature inversion (PTI) conditions, and non-PTI conditions with nocturnal conditions ranging from well mixed to stable. Mixing state classifications were performed completely independently of site meteorological measurements. World Health Organization guideline values for daily PM2.5/PM10 were exceeded only under strong PTI conditions (3–15% of non-summer months) or often under non-PTI stable nocturnal conditions (14–20% of all months), when minimum nocturnal mean wind speeds were also recorded. In non-summer months, diurnal amplitudes of NO (CO) increased by the factors of 2–12 (3–7) from well-mixed nocturnal conditions to PTI conditions, with peak concentrations occurring in the morning/evening commuting periods. Analysis of observations within radon-derived atmospheric mixing ‘class types’ was carried out to substantially clarify relationships between meteorological and air quality parameters (e.g. wind speed vs. PM2.5 concentration, and atmospheric mixing depth vs. PM10 concentration).

Opis:
The stability analysis method is developed for distributed dynamic problems with relaxed ssumptions imposed on solutions. The problem is motivated by structural vibrations with external time-dependent parametric excitations which are controlled using surfacemounted or embedded actuators and sensors. The strong form of equations involves irregulari- ties which lead to computational difficulties for estimation and control problems. In order to avoid irregular terms resulting from differentiation of force and moment terms, dynamical equations are written in a weak form. The weak form of dynamical equations of linear mechanical struc- tures is obtained using Hamilton’s principle. The study of stability of a stochastic weak system is based on examining properties of the Liapunov functional along a weak solution. Solving the problem is not dependent on assumed boundary conditions.

Układy aktywnego tłumienia drgań cienkościennych elementów płytowych mogą zawierać elementy piezoelektryczne oddziaływujące na konstrukcję.W uproszczonym modelu oddziaływanie to sprowadza się do działania momentów gnących lub sił rozłożonych na krawędziach elementu piezoelektrycznego. Wprowadzenie dystrybucji -Diraca i jej pochodnej prowadzi do analitycznego zapisu obciążenia i wprowadza nieregularności do rozwiązania zadania drgań wymuszonych układu ciągłego.

Opis:
In this article we construct a finite-difference scheme for the three-dimensional equations of the atmospheric boundary layer. The solvability of the mathematical model is proved and quality properties of the solutions are studied. A priori estimates are derived for the solution of the differential equations. The mathematical questions of the difference schemes for the equations of the atmospheric boundary layer are studied. Nonlinear terms are approximated such that the integral term of the identity vanishes when it is scalar multiplied. This property of the difference scheme is formulated as a lemma. Main a priori estimates for the solution of the difference problem are derived. Approximation properties are investigated and the theorem of convergence of the difference solution to the solution of the differential problem is proved.

Opis:
In this paper, stability and instability of Functionally Graded Piezoelectric (FGP) beams is investigated based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The material properties of the beam are considered to change gradually through thickness of the beam by a simple power law. By using the principle of minimum total potential energy, governing equations of the beam are derived. Stability behavior of the beam is predicted by solving the governing equations of the FGP beam. The results show that the homogeneity of boundary conditions plays a critical role in the stability of the FGP beam. While non-homogeneous boundary conditions lead to stable behavior of the FGP beam; homogeneous boundary conditions cause instability in the beam. By solving the eigenvalue equation of the FGP beam, the buckling load of the beam is obtained for the beams that have unstable behavior. Finally, the effects of various parameters on the buckling load of the unstable beam, such as power law index, temperature, applied voltage and aspect ratio are investigated, and the results are compared with the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory.

The aim of the considerations is to test drawability of sheets by estimation of acceptable values of plastic strains and the corresponding heights of spherical shells. The analysis was based on some selected real conditions of stability loss. The influence of the coefficient of material hardening for the drawpiece, the coefficient of normal anisotropy and coefficients of plane anisotropy on acceptable values of plastic strains and heights of the formed drawpieces corresponding to the given condition of stability loss was also tested.

Diagnostics of stability of the cores constructions, elements of the carrier system of the ship and port facilities, reduces to the definition of critical forces, excess which causes a transition of the system from one equilibrium state to another. Such a transition often leads to the destruction of the constructions or other forms of accidents, and therefore it is extremely undesirable and for practice it is important to knowledge of a specific spectrum of critical forces and their corresponding forms of loss of stability.

Opis:
An economical and easy-to-implement technique is outlined by which the mean nocturnal atmospheric mixing state (“stability”) can be assessed over a broad (city-scale) heterogeneous region solely based on near- -surface (2 m above ground level [a.g.l.]) observations of the passive tracer radon-222. The results presented here are mainly based on summer data of hourly meteorological and radon observations near Łodź, Central Poland, from 4 years (2008–2011). Behaviour of the near-surface wind speed and vertical temperature gradient (the primary controls of the nocturnal atmospheric mixing state), as well as the urban heat island intensity, are investigated within each of the four radon-based nocturnal stability categories derived for this study (least stable, weakly stable, moderately stable, and stable). On average, the most (least) stable nights were characterized by vertical temperature gradient of 1.1 (0.5)⁰C·m-1, wind speed of ~0.4 (~1.0) m·s-1, and urban heat island intensity of 4.5 (0.5)⁰C. For sites more than 20 km inland from the coast, where soils are not completely saturated or frozen, radon-based nocturnal stability classification can significantly enhance and simplify a range of environmental research applications (e.g. urban climate studies, urban pollution studies, regulatory dispersion modelling, and evaluating the performance of regional climate and pollution models).
