Opis:
The paper provides some guidelines on the choice of the target species compositions for plantations that would replace monocultural spruce stands growing on the sites of the Silesian Beskid Mts. Part of the guidelines relates to the rules governing the sequence in which the monocultures will be converted into mixed stands. It is suggested that those rules should be combined with the principles of the establishment of progenyplantations. The seed stands of the Istebna spruce are experimentally divided into four categories according to their abilityto perform the function of a seed stand. The following features of the stands are analysed: vitality, density, stage of regeneration, protective and cultural functions. The paper contains also an outline of the methods of species conversion and the relevant references.

The studies were carried out on seed explants (mature zygotic embryos) of four spruce species: Picea omorika (Pancić) Purk., P. pungens ‘Glauca' Beisnn., P. breweriana S. Watson and P. abies (L.) Karst. The explants required darkness during the induction of embryogenic tissue. Temporary exposure of explants to light did not increase their embryogenic capacity. It was observed that the temperature of 25°C was the optimal for embryogenic tissue induction from mature zygotic embryos of Picea omorika. Cold treatment at 4°C during one week improved embryogenic tissue initiation in the explants of P. pungens ‘Glauca'. Seed explants of Picea omorika produced embryogenic tissue on medium lacking glutamine. Only explants of Picea abies and P. omorika showed embryogenic tissue formation. For effective proliferation of embryogenic tissue in Picea abies and P. omorika it was necessary to supply the medium with 2,4-D (4.5-9 μM) and BA (2.25 μM). Two of three analized lines showed that ABA promote somatic embryo maturation, at the ABA concentration 20 μM in the medium.

The objective of the presented study was to compare the effect of osmotic stress, induced by various concentrations of polyethylene glycol (PEG) MW 4000, on the development, maturation, and conversion of somatic embryos of Picea abies (model species) and P. omorika (endemic species) into somatic seedlings. Embryogenic tissue (ET) of P. abies (line A and B) and P. omorika were incubated on a maturation medium with 20 μM abscisic acid (ABA), 1 μM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and PEG 4000 at 0, 5, and 7.5%. After 5 weeks, the number of somatic embryos produced, and the number of cotyledonary somatic embryos per 1 gram of ET, was assessed. Cotyledonary somatic embryos were selected and transferred to a Margara germination medium for two months. Their growth, as measured by hypocotyl and radicle length, was evaluated after one month, and the somatic embryos were transferred to fresh medium. After the second month of incubation, the conversion frequency of germinated embryos into the seedlings was assessed. In general, ETs of both of the tested spruce species cultured on a maturation medium amended with 5% PEG 4000 exhibited a tendency to produce a higher total number of embryos, as well as a higher number of cotyledonary embryos. The B line of P. abies produced a significantly greater number of cotyledonary embryos, relative to the control (no PEG). PEG only stimulated hypocotyl growth in embryos of both lines (A and B) of P. abies during the germination stage. Somatic embryos of Picea omorika were characterized by poor growth of both hypocotyls and radicles, irrespective of PEG treatment. The addition of PEG 4000 to the maturation medium did not improve the conversion frequency of germinated somatic embryos into somatic seedlings in either spruce species after a month of incubation on Margara medium. The effect of PEG 4000 on somatic embryogenesis efficiency was more evident in the ET of the two P. abies lines, relative to the P. omorika ET line, during both the maturation and the germination stage. Results indicated that the P. omorika ET line was almost completely insensitive to all of the PEG concentrations tested.

The main aim of the study was to compare the radial growth of Persian walnut and Schrenk spruce trees growing under the same ecological conditions in the Sary-Chelek range of the Tien-Shan Mountains, as well as to analyse the response of these species to the selected climate factors in line with the altitude gradient. Four study plots were established at the altitude of 1350, 1400, 1450 and 1500 m a.s.l. Results indicated that (1) walnut and spruce in the Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve have different patterns of radial increment and reaction to climate factors, despite growing in the same habitat, (2) spruce radial growth responded to low precipitation and low temperature during the April to September period of the previous year; (3) walnut radial increment patterns varied significantly with changes in altitude, whereas spruce patterns did not; and (4) walnut radial increment patterns responded positively to high temperature during contemporary growing season and to precipitation during the prior growing season. In addition, it was noted that precipitation during the contemporary growing season could negatively influence growth.

The aim of the study was to determine the causes of dying down of sprout and needles of Colorado blue spruce (Picea pungens Engelm.) and its cultivar ‘Glauca’ in the park collection of the Botanic Garden of Jagiellonian University in Cracow. For several years, the disease symptoms described in the article have led to the loss of decorative values of these trees. The study was conducted in the years 2002 and 2003 by means of the control of plant healthfulness, phytopathological diagnostics, isolation of microorganisms from tissues exhibiting diseases symptoms, as well as the culture and identification of the isolated fungi. Both, the control of tree healthfulness, and specialized laboratory techniques proved that the symptoms diagnosed in plants had an infectious character, and that the fungi might be the main causing agents. The analysis of the fungal populations isolated from the affected tissues indicates the combined occurrence of fungi in tissues of the studied plants and the domination of the following species: Alternaria consortiale, Aureobasidium pullulans, Penicillium canescens, Phoma pomorum, Ulocladium consortiale, Zythiostroma pinastri.
W latach 2002 i 2003 przeprowadzono badania w oparciu o ocenę zdrowotności roślin, diagnostykę fitopatologiczną, wyosobnienie mikroorganizmów z tkanek z objawami chorobowymi oraz hodowlę i identyfikację wyosobnionych grzybów.

Opis:
Mountain forests constitute one of the most diverse ecosystems, not only in Europe but also all over the world. Mountain ranges, which frequently encompass multiple countries, constitute a unique link between various natural areas, which are very often completely different from the historical point, or which are characterized by different use and management types. Although the role of mountain forests is relatively well recognized nowadays, in the distant past, these areas were poorly penetrated, mainly due to the unfavourable climate and natural topography, which discouraged not only from settling down but also from moving around. Despite the fact that mountains had been the object of interest of mining, weaving, and glassmaking industries for hundreds of years, dramatic changes in the stands in these areas were sealed by the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries. The purpose of this paper is the analysis of forest dieback process in the mountain ranges of Sudetes and Western Carpathians placed in Poland. Stress factors have been divided into three main groups, however, it should be remembered that it is a very simplified division and some factors could be partially found in the anthropogenic, as well as biotic, and even abiotic factor groups. Neither the beginning nor the end of deforestation process was defined precisely in the study, which was deliberate in taking into account constant changes in the ecosystems. Generally, three periods may be distinguished here, regarding the spruce forests dieback process. Typically anthropogenic deforestation, caused by the industrialization of the areas during the industrial revolution and earlier, deforestation in the years 1970–1980 and partially before the year 2000 (Western Carpathians) caused by a set of various stress factors and the latest period, that is, generally understood climate change. The last several years have particularly contributed to the expansion of detailed knowledge about the dependencies and the influence of abiotic, biotic, and anthropogenic factors on the health condition of spruce trees. Although models have already been developed, which describe the course of insect outbreaks, the growth and health condition of spruces, or climate factors, no model has been developed so far that would allow to depict the process of hitherto deforestation, and to enable modelling the forthcoming changes. It seems that the development of such tool, not only from the forest management point of view, would constitute a milestone on the way to precision forestry.

The article presents the results of provenance trials carried on the Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), the Siberian spruce (Picea obovata Ledeb.) and hybrid forms of these two species. The trails were laid in 1977–1978 according to wide-scale All-Union program of 1972 year (Prokazin 1972) in the Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Leningrad regions and the Republic of Bashkortostan. The results of the most recent inventory of provenance trials as well as analyses of preservation and growth of spruce progenies with different geographical origin are presented. One of the main factors affecting spruce progeny survival was north-south distance between seed collection locality and test locality. At the time of the study (2010–2012), in the Vologda and Arkhangelsk regions, spruce progeny preservation was higher in the case of mother stands distant to the north. On the contrary, in the Leningrad region and the Republic of Bashkortostan, preservation of northern climatypes’ progenies was lower during the whole period of plantations’ growth. With the change of seed collection locality towards west-east direction, a correlation between progeny preservation and geographical origin factors was non-existent (Vologda, Arkhangelsk regions) or weak (Leningrad region, Republic of Bashkortostan). The most successful growth and the lowest preservation were observed under the conditions of sharp-continental climate, in provenance trials carried out in the Bashkortostan Republic. In the north of Russia, in provenance trials in the Arkhangelsk region there was observed the slowest spruce growth. On the whole, at all the objects under investigation, Norway spruce progenies and hybrid forms with Norway spruce properties showed better growth parameters when compared to those of the Siberian spruce.

The article discusses the place of the spruce in Slavic and Baltic customs, folk medicine, chants, and superstitions. The research has demonstrated that the tree has many meanings in Slavic culture (it is treated there as a female tree, which is suggested by its name in East Slavic languages), and although it seems to be straight and simple (because it is the way it grows) it has turned out to be a liminal tree of borderlands, connecting life with death, and allowing for a reconciliation with inevitability of passing, facilitating the passage of a dead person’s soul to the other dimension of eternal life. The spruce combines the joy of wedding (because it is included in the wedding tree) with the threat of infertility (if it is planted too close to home). Additionally, it protects cattle from witches and evil spirits (for the first pasture outing, cattle was driven with a spruce twig, or a tree was laid before the building from which the animals were driven out). Its blades, twigs, and cones were widely used as designates in folk medicine chants, and for infusions, extracts, and ointments used externally and internally as medicines.

Embryogenic cultures of plants are exposed to various stress factors both in vitro and during cryostorage. In order to safely include the plant material obtained by somatic embryogenesis in combination with cryopreservation for breeding programs, it is necessary to monitor its genetic stability. The aim of the present study was the assessment of somaclonal variation in plant material obtained from embryogenic cultures of Picea abies (L.) Karst. and P. omorika (Pančić) Purk. maintained in vitro or stored in liquid nitrogen by the pregrowth-dehydration method. The analysis of genetic conformity with using microsatellite markers was performed on cotyledonary somatic embryos (CSE), germinating somatic embryos (GSE) and somatic seedlings (SS), obtained from tissues maintained in vitro or from recovered embryogenic tissues (ETc) and CSE obtained after cryopreservation. The analysis revealed changes in the DNA of somatic embryogenesis-derived plant material of both Picea spp. They were found in plant material from 8 out of 10 tested embryogenic lines of P. abies and in 10 out of 19 embryogenic lines of P. omorika after in vitro culture. Changes were also detected in plant material obtained after cryopreservation. Somaclonal variation was observed in ETc and CSE of P. omorika and at ETv stage of P. abies. However, most of the changes were induced at the stage of somatic embryogenesis initiation. These results confirm the need for monitoring the genetic stability of plants obtained by somatic embryogenesis and after cryopreservation for both spruce species.

Results of experimental modal analysis of a resonance and non-resonance spruce wood (Picea abies L.) are presented. The resonance wood came from a tree from Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the non-resonance wood came from the vicinity of Olsztyn from the north-eastern Poland. The modal parameters (modal frequency, modal damping and mode shapes) of the wood samples were determined for the samples of 8 mm in thickness. Modal analysis was made by pulse excitation. The resonance and non-resonance wood differ in the fundamental modal parameters as well as in the number of potential modes. Additionally, calculated values of damping factor are presented. The values are much bigger for a non-resonance wood than for good quality resonance spruce.

This study evaluates the influence of repeated artificial drought stress on the fine root charac- teristics – including ectomycorrhizae – of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst]. The experimental site consisted of two plots in a mature spruce monoculture stand. The water regime at parts of both plots was regulated by shelters and an isolation trench during vegetation season (spring to autumn) since 2010. Root samples were collected during autumn in 2010, 2012, and 2013. Root analyses revealed the effect of drought stress on mycorrhizal root tips changed over time. While a density of active mycorrhizae was about 34% lower in drought-stressed areas compared to nonstressed (control) areas in 2010, it increased by 15% in 2012 and by 22% in 2013 over both plots. We observed the less pronounced effect of drought on a proportion of active mycorrhizae, but it generally followed the pattern of active mycorrhizae density. The density of nonactive mycorrhizae was not influenced by drought but significantly fluctuated during the course of the experiment. Other root characteristics such as the dry mass of fine roots (< 1 mm), the specific length of fine roots (< 1 mm) and the composition of the ectomycorrhizal community (primarily dominated by Amphinema byssoides, Tylospora fibrillosa, Tylopilus felleus, and Cenococcum geophilum) were also not significantly influenced by drought. Our results indicate the ability of Norway spruce fine roots to com- pensate for repeated drought stress of the intermediate intensity.

The illumination under the canopy in different types of pine and spruce forests is considered. The research was carried out in different points of the Northern taiga of the Arkhangelsk region. Illumination was measured using a luxmeter in different directions: at the level of the moss-lichen layer, at the level of the grass-shrub layer and at a height of 1.3 m; at different distances from the tree trunk; at different distances from the edge of the forest. Illumination in pine forests at the level of the moss-lichen layer is 2.3 times higher than in spruce forests. Under the canopy of spruce forests, it is 1–3%, and in the pine forests, 3–9% of the illumination in the open. Illumination from tree trunks to the edge increases in pine and spruce forests equally. The lowest illumination is observed at the level of the moss-lichen layer, then it increases to the grass-shrub layer, and then practically does not change. However, the difference between pine and spruce forests is consistently high 47%. The decrease in illumination in the tree stand as it moves away from the edge in blueberry pine forests is observed up to a distance of 10 m from the edge, and in blueberry spruce forests up to 6 m.

The forests of urbanised areas provide multiple ecosystem services and are highly dynamic. Determining the trends in species composition changes can help to predict their future capacity to fulfil ecological and resource-maintaining functions. We examined the direction of forest successions in the Northeast Moscow region under the canopy of different tree species. Field data were obtained from 78 permanent test plots monitored for more than a 15-year period; field studies were complemented by archival data. The cluster analysis made it possible to divide all plots into five groups by current species composition and structure and into eight groups by the importance of broadleaved species in the undergrowth. Gradual evolution (cohort dynamics) was found to be typical for middle-aged secondary forests; patch dynamics was described in mature stands of late succession species after non-critical natural disturbances; drastic changes were observed in spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands after pest attacks. Two main trends were revealed in species composition shift: restoration of mixed spruce-broadleaved forests and development of limedominated broad-leaved forests, the latter being the prevailing one in the stands of composite forest types. Intensive development of oak-associated species is probably related to the climate conditions in the Moscow megacity. The content of this article may be of interest for researchers studying natural forest dynamics and can be used for prospective planning of target species composition in the forestries of the Moscow region.

Opis:
In acoustic musical instruments special attention needs to be paid to those particularly sensitive parts made of tonewood whose function is to respond to vibrations. One of the most important tonewoods is spruce because of its good resonance properties. Spruce is especially used for soundboards, these being the primary source of sound. Piano manufacturers dry their soundboards to approximately 6% wood moisture, at which drying stage they are glued into the instrument. Fluctuations of the moisture content in the wood affect the tone. With changing moisture content, the instrument can go out of tune, even cracks can appear at very low moisture content in the wood. In addition, the tone colour will change. This may result from changes in the hammer felt or from changes in the vibration properties of the soundboard. Strain- and frequency-dependent damping measurements were carried out on spruce wood at different wood moisture contents in order to investigate the effect of the moisture content on the vibration behaviour. Wood which is slowly dried in air for several years is preferably used for high-class pianos. Therefore, damping measurements on new and on more than 130-year old spruce wood samples were performed.

Opis:
Actual status of mountain forests especialy, of Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst. (L)) stands is a result of combined action between forest management measures and biotic and abiotic risk factors. In this context, tree growth dynamics is a result of multifactor interaction (competition, disturbance, management practice, climate etc.). Wind damage affect the stand structure and normal ecosystem functions including the relationship between individual tree growth and competition processes. Though, it is recorded a diminishing of productive capacity for affected stands as well as a significant diameter increment for remaining standing trees. The correlation between tree growth (cumulate basal area increment in the last 10 years) and competition (Hegyi and Schutz competition indices) was analysed in stands with different windfall intensity. No relationship between tree growth and competition was observed in highly affected stands. Schutz competition index explains better individual tree growth comparing with Hegyi index in low or no-affected stand by windthrow. The variability of the basal area increment (lnΔɡ10), explained by competition indices, is rather low (<2%) in the stand that had been highly affected by windfall, regardless of the selected competition index. Thus, significant reduction of the stand density related to number of trees (low density), as a consequence of high intensity windfalls, crown competition has a very small influence on the basal area increment comparing with situations met in low (high density) and moderate (medium density) affected stands.

Changes in Gregarina typographi Fuchs, 1915 (Eugregarinorida: Gregarinidae) infection levels were studied in a population of the bark beetle Ips typographus (L., 1758) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), which lives in association with Norway spruce. Beetles were repeatedly collected from three logs of trap trees during 2009 and 2010 at one study site in the Czech Republic with a high level of G. typographi infection (seasonal mean of 15.7% in 2009 and 19.8% in 2010). Infection levels did not differ statistically between sexes, logs, and trap trees but did differ among sampling dates. During the beetle reproductive period, the infection levels nearly doubled in 2009 (from 10.7 to 19.8%) and more than tripled in 2010 (from 9.3 to 31.3%). We infer that the continuous increase in the G. typographi infection level within each of the two years resulted from transmission among beetles in nuptial chambers during the May–June reproductive and egg-laying period.

Opis:
Geomorphological events are very important disturbance factors for cliff forests and forests located on steep mountain slopes. In this study we present dendrochronological reconstruction of two types of disturbances which affect subalpine forest growing in such extreme habitats in Roztoka Valley in the Tatra Mountains: landslide and rockfalls. We determine the years of death of trees found in landslide area on Czuba Roztocka which indicate the year of 1997 as the time of this event, probably related to heavy midsummer rainfall in this year. Scars on trees growing at the base of Orle Ściany cliff allowed determining the rockfall events. We found that scars, even in neighbour trees were formed in different years between 1940 and 2004. It means that they were formed rather by separate stones which fell from the cliff sporadically then a large scale fall of debris at the same time. This may suggest that rockfalls in cliffs of Orle Ściany were limited to single rocks which fell successively when erosion process separated them from the bedrock. Dendrochronology seems to be an effective method which enables long term reconstruction of gemorphological processes in the High Tatras.

Opis:
The effect of drought stress on regular cambium activity and wood formation in stems of two different clones of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was investigated. Tissue samples were taken during the growing season from May to September 2010. Artificial drought stress, induced by long-term sheltering of the soil, was significantly manifested in clone 15. In the stressed individual, the period of cambium activity was shorter, the total number of formed cells was lower and the resulting tree ring was narrower. The number of cells in the phases of postcambial growth and secondary cell wall formation was significantly lower in comparison to the control tree. The tracheid lignification process was slower in the tree stressed by water deficit and the first mature tracheids were observed later. On the other hand, in clone 18 probably genetic dispositions played an important role as no considerable deviations in the cambium activity and new wood cells production were observed. Fitting xylem increments to the Gompertz function showed that the period of the most intensive cell formation was at the turn of June and July and the maximum daily production of new cells was higher in non-stressed individuals than in the stressed ones. The results of the experiment lead us to the conclusion that drought stress can significantly affect the cambium activity of some clones, the differentiation process of anatomical elements, and thus also the resulting tree ring width.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the influence of stand density index on the tree−ring width, latewood proportion and wood density for Norway spruce. Study sites were located as follows: 12 within the north−eastern species range in Poland, 7 in the south−western range, in the Sudety Mts., and 9 in the Carpathians (southern range). Clustering stands according to their stand density index, 10 data groups were established: stand density index values from 0.3 to 1.2. The study plots were 100×100 m squares. On each plot 15 trees were chosen and increment cores were sampled using the Pressler borer. The smoothed cores served for measuring the width of annual rings, latewood zones and the share of latewood as well as for determination of relative wood density. The performed analyses indicate that mean tree−ring width was the highest in trees from stands with density index from 0.3 to 0.8 (with the exception of 0.7), whereas the it was gradually decreasing in stands with index higher than 0.9. The statistically significant differences between the analyzed stands were observed (p<0.0001). The analysis of the influence of stand density index and the width of annual rings revealed significant, negative weak correlation (r=–0.242, p<0.001). In turn, the latewood proportion was the highest in trees from stands characterised by the highest stand density index and the lowest in trees from stands with the lowest one. The differences between analyzed groups of stands were statistically significant (p<0.0001), as well as the correlation which was significant, positive and weak (r=0.269, p<0.001). Wood density was the highest in trees from stands with the highest stand density index (1.1 – 363 kg/m3 i 1.2 – 365 kg/m3) as well as in those from stands characterised by 0.7 density index (369 kg/m3). Significant differences were observed (p<0.0001) only between stand density index 0.3−0.7 and 0.7−0.8. Significant correlation was not observed.

The radial variation of the selected physical and mechanical properties of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst) wood from the provenance area in Głuchów. Spruce wood (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst) is one of the main species used in building constructions. Due to the wide occurrence, it is important to test various origins and in this way select those with the best material properties. Wood was obtained from one habitat from a provenance experimental area in Głuchów from 40-year-old trees. For the study, trees from three different origins were selected: Nowe Ramuki, Bliżyn and Rycerka Praszywka II (origin from respectively northern, central and southern Poland - seedlings came from these places). Spruce wood from Bliżyn, which is the closest to the proven research area in Głuchów, reached the highest average values in all studied traits (density, ultrasonic wave velocity, dynamic and static modulus of elasticity and static bending strength) and was characterized by the highest variability of these features. Regardless of the origin, the above-mentioned features of the wood showed a clear upward trend going from the pith to the to the side of the trunk.

W niniejszej pracy analizowano trzy pochodzenia: po jednym z północnej, centralnej i południowej części Polski, a mianowicie: Nowe Ramuki, Bliżyn i Rycerka Praszywka II. Drewno świerkowe z pochodzenia Bliżyn, leżącego najbliżej proweniencyjnej powierzchni badawczej w Głuchowie, osiągnęło najwyższe średnie wartości we wszystkich badanych cechach (gęstości, prędkości fal ultradźwiękowych, dynamicznego i statycznego modułu sprężystości oraz wytrzymałości na zginanie statyczne)a także charakteryzowało się największą zmiennością tych cech. Niezależnie od pochodzenia wymienione wyżej cechy drewna wykazywały wyraźną tendencję wzrostową idąc od rdzenia do obwodu pnia.

The article presents a method of extracting galactoglucomannas (GGMs) from softwood (spruce). GGMs were extracted using thermal and enzymatic treatment in an aqueous environment. The extracted GGMs, depending on the extraction method, were characterized by different composition of simple carbohydrates i.e. glucose, galactose and mannose, as well as by the average molecular weight. Evaluation of the composition of GGMs obtained was performed using GC/MS and SEC. Biopolymer composites were obtained by combining GGMs and microcrystalline chitosan (MCCh), which can be used as preparations for plant protection and growth stimulation. The studies were performed in order to evaluate biological activity of composites based on Petri dish test in which their ability to stimulate seed germination of selected plants was estimated. The effect of plant growth stimulation depended on GGMs composition of simple carbohydrates. GC/MS and SEC chromatographic tests and 13C NMR analysis enabled to establish the composition and structural changes of the obtained GGMs and biocomposites

The quality assessment of spruce seeds consists mainly in determining their germination capacity, including germination rate (speed), but also purity and weight. Internationally recognised methods are listed in the ISTA Rules for Seed Testing which also specify test conditions. Some countries such as Poland use modified methods. Apart from providing information about the purity of a species, purity testing can also identify the proportion of winged seeds in each seed lot. Germination tests yield data on the maximum germination potential of a seed lot which are used to compare the quality of different lots and to establish the field sowing values. This paper presents the methods used for assessing the quality of Norway spruce seeds, and discusses their advantages and disadvantages and the problems that need further investigation.

The study deals with long-term dynamics of snags and fallen dead wood from 1970 to 2010 in an unmanaged forest ecosystem dominated by European beech in the Bažinky area, Krkonoše National Park (Czech Republic). The volume of dead wood was estimated from 1970 separately for fallen dead wood (logs) and standing dead wood (snags and stumps). Total dead wood volume on permanent research plot (PRP) 6 increased from 41.9 to 241.6 m3 ha–1 and on PRP 7 from 27.7 to 170.0 m3 ha–1. During 40 year case study the mean total volume of fallen dead wood was 193.3 m3 ha–1 (± 29.8 S.E.) and 96.2 m3 ha–1 (± 19.4 S.E.) and the mean total volume of standing dead wood was 17.4 m3 ha–1 (± 3.4 S.E.) and 12.6 m3 ha–1(± 1.4 S.E.) on PRP 6 and PRP 7, respectively. Comparing tree species, the mean volume of fallen dead wood was significantly higher for Norway spruce than for beech in the decomposition class 1 (F(1, 14) = 5.7, P = 0.03) and significantly higher for beech in the decomposition classes 4 (F(1, 14) = 20.4, P < 0.001) and 5 (F(1, 14) = 25.5, P < 0.001). Dead wood was distributed from randomly to aggregated spatial pattern. Despite the rapid decay of beech wood, the amounts of deadwood are likely to increase further during the next decades with continuing disintegration of the forest stand.

The purpose of the work was to examine how much it can decrease strength spruce wood damaged by insects. In bending test was obtained about 1,6 times strength reduction of damaged wood. When stretching along the fibers ad-hoc endurance decreased 1,4 times, while at stretching across the fibers unexpectedly detected 1,4 times strength increase. In compression test was obtained about double reduction of ad-hoc strength. On shear across the fibers detected 2,8 times decrease of endurance. Results confirm significant reduction of reliability of wooden constructions as a result of damage by insects, what is important for structural safety.

Dark grey podzolized soils on the loess like loams, which are represented in the soil cover within fresh and humidity gradients in the Western Forest Steppe of Ukraine, are characterized by high forest vegetation potential, which ensure the formation of mostly pure and mixed larch and spruce stands with high level of the productivity. Despite the fact that both species are coniferous, their effect on the soil, in particular, on its acid-base indicators (actual and potential forms of acidity, sum of absorbed bases, degree of saturation of bases, content of mobile aluminium), which are important components of soil fertility, are specific. Due to the fact that there is a close interaction between forest plantations and soil properties, changing the participation of species in the stand, it is possible to adjust the actual soil fertility. The soils under both pure and mixed spruce and larch stands are characterized by a high level of potential acidity that reaches the high acidic values in the upper horizons. A similar reaction of soil solution under coniferous forests is caused by acid hydrolysis of aluminosilicates and accumulation of mobile Al in the rhizosphere zone. Simultaneously, the same acidic characteristics, including the presence of movable aluminium, are also found in soils under broadleaved plantations. In general, acid-exchange properties of soils (high potential acidity, unsaturation of bases and availability of movable aluminium) traditionally are considered as unfavourable for vegetation. However, our researches refute it and prove that within certain values, these indicators do not limit the productivity of pure and mixed spruce and larch stands.

In selected stands, spruce trees were cut down and their length, stem thickness, height to the crown base and stem diameters at every 1 m along the length of merchantable bole were measured. The diameter of knots was measured and they were classified according to their healthiness and the degree of their tightness with the surrounding wood. The relative knot diameters were calculated and the relative height of their location on stem was determined. In total on sample trees there were analysed 1070 knots, of which sound knots (close to 75%) and tight (more than 60%) prevailed. Sound and tight knots had largest diameters, relative diameters and relative heights of location on merchantable boles. The smallest diameters and relative diameters were indicated by rotten and not tight knots that were located at the lowest merchantable bole parts.

In 2004, abundant flowering of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was observed in two second- generation seed orchards: (1) ‘Outbreeding’, promoting crossing between clones of five geographically distant populations; and (2) ‘Kolonowskie’, restoring a population whose offspring exists only in an international experiment (IUFRO 1964/1968). In bothseed orchards, female strobili were produced by 91.3% and 91.7% of clones, represented by 64.1% and 55.5% of grafts, respectively, and statistically significant differences between clones were found in the number of mature cones. In the case of the seed orchard ‘Outbreeding’, the number of mature cones in individual clones was significantly correlated with latitude of the origin of maternal populations (r = 0.8826, p = 0.0470). The majority (95%) of cones in seed orchards ‘Outbreeding’ and ‘Kolonowskie’ were produced by only 28.2% and 38.5% of all clones, and 21.4% and 25.7% of all grafts, respectively. These data attest to a disparity between the level of genetic diversity in seed orchard progeny resulting from the observed numbers of cone-bearing clones and grafts and the genetic diversity expected from the actual participation of clones and grafts in seed orchard composition. The estimated seed production per 1 ha of seed orchard area in 2004 reached 21.05 kg for ‘Outbreeding’ and 21.72 kg for ‘Kolonowskie’.

In comparison with the theoretical assumptions, the influence of temperature on the cutting force and specific cutting resistance was confirmed. With increasing temperature of modification, the specific cutting resistance and cutting force decreased. The reduction of value of cutting force is related to changes in the chemical structure of the wood components, weight and density loss due to the increasing temperature of modification.
Wpływ temperatury modyfikacji termicznej drewna świerkowego na parametry skrawania podczas cięcia piłą tarczową. W pracy zbadano wpływ temperatury modyfikacji na parametry skrawania (oprór skrawania i siła skrawania) przy cięciu piłą tarczową drewna świerka pospolitego (Picea Abies) poddanego obróbce termicznej. Próbki drewna do badań poddano obróbce w temperaturze 160°C, 180°C, 200°C i 220°C.

This study dealt with the species distribution and frequency of ophiostomatoid fungi associated with the bark beetle Ips typographus on Norway spruce and Scots pine in north-eastern Poland. At all locations high spruce bark beetle damage has occurred in 2002-2003. Fungi were isolated from beetles and from brood systems of trees infested by the spruce bark beetle. The ophiostomatoid fungi were represented by 13 species. A similar spectrum of ophiostomatoid fungi as that recorded from Picea abies was associated with I. typographus on Pinus sylvestris trees. The most frequent ophiostomatoid species isolated from beetles, phloem and sapwood of Norway spruce were O. bicolor and O. penicillatum. The frequency of occurrence of ophiostomatoid fungi varied significantly among the examined locations. O. bicolor was the most frequently found species on Scots pine infested by I. typographus. The potential role of ophiostomatoid fungi in the epidemiology of I. typographus is discussed. Additionally, we also recorded how the ophiostomatoid fungi associated with spruce bark beetle could grow into phloem and sapwood of Pinus sylvestris trees.

The work outlines the directions in the past and present research into the variability of Norway spruce in Poland, and presents the results of provenance experiments concerning the genetic and breeding value of provenances tested in the Polish range of spruce distribution. The Istebna race proved to have a good value, however, so far only the progeny of single stands have been tested. It is thus necessary to determine the range of distribution for this race. The altitude of the location of mother stands significantly correlates with the genetic and breeding value of their progeny cultivated at different altitudes. This suggests that the altitude and exposure of plantations to be established in mountain forest belts should be specified for individual provenances (altitudinal zoning). New inventory provenance tests should be run under varied site conditions to assess both the genetic value and plasticity range of the provenances. In view of the biotic and abiotic threats facing spruce, there is a need to work out detailed programmes designed to preserve its genetic resources in gene banks and in vivo archives.

In this study, an Estonian tree-ring network of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H.Karst.), originating from both living trees and dead wood of construction wood, was used for determining the growth variations over the past 350 years (AD 1657–2009). Regional curve standardization was used to remove the non-climatic growth variations from the individual tree-ring series prior to dendroclimatic analyses to focus on the low-frequency (long-term and -period) growth variations. Previously, the chronology has been shown to correlate markedly well with Estonian precipitation history. Here we further detail this dendroclimatic connection. Correlations between the Estonian precipitation and treerings improved systematically with both the number of meteorological stations included and with the documented technical advances in the network of instrumental weather observations. The observed June precipiation explains roughly 20 percent of the tree-ring variance over the period when the network of weather observations is densest (1946–2009). On decadal and longer scales, the June precipitation explains higher portion of tree-ring variance, roughly 50 percent, over the full instrumental era (1866–2009). Comparison with previously published and similarly standardized tree-ring chronology from south-eastern Finland, based on Scots pine tree-rings, showed that the two chronologies exhibit several coinciding periods of ameliorated and deteriorated growth.

The Jizerské hory Mts. (the Czech Republic) are part of the Black Triangle region strongly af- fected by a decline and dieback of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) stands since the 1970s. In the studied peaty spruce stands in the summit parts of the Jizerské hory Mts., the health status, radial growth and foliar nutrient content in relation to air pollution (SO2, NOX and O3) and climate factors (temperature, precipitation) were investigated in 1960–2015. A considerable disturbance of the stand structure induced by an increased mortality was observed in 1981–1983 when more than a half of the tree individuals died. Severe defoliation occurred in 1981 as a consequence of the synergic effects of air pollution, winter des- iccation and spruce bark beetle outbreak, as well as in 2015 due to the drought and high temperatures. Tree ring analyses indicated significant growth depression in 1979–1987, a period of the highest SO2 load, and in 2010–2015. Foliation and diameter increment were significantly influenced by SO2 and NOX con- centrations, the maximum daily concentration being the most negative factor; no significant correlation of the ozone exposure was detected, though. Foliar analyses also document significant negative impacts of air pollutants on the nutrient status of forest stands, mainly in the increase of the sulphur level. Since 1990, a significant increase in calcium and magnesium has been observed, as a result of forest liming. Interaction between radial growth and temperature was stronger compared to precipitation. Low temper- atures and high precipitation in growing season were the limiting factors for radial growth in waterlogged mountain areas.

Net ecosystem production reflects the potential of the ecosystem to sequestrate atmospheric CO2. Daily net ecosystem production of a mountain Norway spruce forest of the temperate zone (Czech Republic) was determined using the eddy covariance method. Growing season days when the ecosystem was a CO2 source were examined with respect to current weather conditions. During the 2005, 2006, and 2007 growing seasons, there were 44, 65, and 39 days, respectively, when the forest was a net CO2 source. The current weather conditions associated with CO2 release during the growing seasons were: cool and overcast conditions at the beginning or end of the growing seasons characterized by a 3-year mean net ecosystem production of -7.2 kg C ha-1 day-1; overcast or/and rainy days (-23.1 kg C ha-1 day-1); partly cloudy and hot days (-11.8 kg C ha-1 day-1); and overcast and hot days (-13.5 kg C ha-1 day-1). CO2 release was the highest during the overcast or/and rainy conditions (84%, average from all years), which had the greatest impact during the major production periods. As forests are important CO2 sinks and more frequent weather extremes are expected due to climate change, it is important to predict future forest carbon balances to study the influence of heightened variability in climatic variables.

Activities for artificial 137Cs and 90Sr show moderate values. Statistically different values were found between the mean concentration of 90Sr and 137Cs in current (C) and two years old (C+2) needles of the first tree, whereas for potassium no significant difference was observed. For the second, fallen tree, no significant difference between the mean activity concentration in needles for C+1 and C+2 was found for each radionuclide, but much lower levels of 137Cs contamination were observed. Observed values of the aggregation coefficients for 137Cs and 90Sr are presented.

Accumulation of proline is a defense mechanism against external stress conditions, preventing damage to the structure and function of cells and improving plant development processes, such as germination. The purpose of this study was to investigate proline treatment as a means of improving the germination and development of Norway spruce seedlings. The effect of exogenous proline has been studied in three stages of initial plant development. The collected seeds were soaked in water or 8 mM proline solution and placed on the germinators. The germination capacity and the mean germination time were determined. Seedlings with radicles >10 mm were transferred to the sand-peat substrate at a constant temperature of 20 °C. Seedlings at 3 subsequent developmental stages (S1 – germinated seeds with radicles > 3 mm; S2 – seedlings with radicles >10 mm; S3 – established seedlings grown for 90 days) were examined for the oxygen consumption rate, total antioxidant capacity, hydrogen peroxide level, malondialdehyde level and intracellular proline content. Proline treatment was conducive to lowering the levels of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde at stage S1. At the subsequent stages of development, the levels of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde increased, and at the S3 stage, there was also a marked increase in total antioxidant capacity. At stage S3, the seedlings of the proline treatment were characterized by a lower total mass, and the response to exogenous proline was stronger in the root tissues than in the leaves. The oxygen consumption rate was higher for the proline treatment at all stages of development. Seedlings at the analyzed stages of establishment differed in response to proline treatment. Exogenous proline had some beneficial effects during the first phase of germination by reducing the level of hydrogen peroxide and improving the condition of lipid membranes. In the subsequent stages of seedling development, in response to the same concentration of proline solution, undesirable effects, such as an increase in hydrogen peroxide levels and damage to cytoplasmic membranes, were observed. Optimal concentrations of exogenous proline should be determined prior to commercial use of proline treatment to improve plant stress tolerance.

Opis:
On the basis of the historical (dating from the 1920s) and contemporary phytosociological relevés, taken in the spruce forests of the Polish Tatra Mts., the changes were determined that took place in these forests. This area had been for centuries under the influence of human economic activities, mainly pasturing and wood extraction, and then protected in the Tatra National Park. These changes differ according to the altitudinal vegetation belts. In the coniferous forests of the upper montane belt, the changes due to wind breaks or tree stand ageing did not lead to transition to other forest associations. A tendency can yet be noticed of losing a part of the species combinations characteristic for the associations or higher syntaxonomic units, which might be linked with the stopping of grazing in the forests and development of the undergrowth of tall herb character. The association of the fir-and-spruce forests in the lower montane belt displayed much bigger changes. There was an increase of the role of species of the deciduous forests, while the role of the coniferous forest species was limited in the studied patches, which clearly indicates the evolution of the forests towards the beech woods, typical for the lower montane belt. This means a progressing limitation of the spruce forests in the limestone Tatras to the advantage of return of the beech woodsdominated there in older time.

The effect of Phlebiopsis gigantea treatment in control of Heterobasidion parviporum in Norway spruce is less effective than that in control of Heterobasidion annosum in pine. It is necessary to apply other fungi, for example, Pleurotus abieticola in Norway spruce stands. Thus, it is necessary to assess the activity of major ligninolytic enzymes, that is, laccase, lignin peroxidase (LiP), manganese peroxidase (MnP) and versatile peroxidase (VP) produced by P. abieticola, which may be effective in the fast degradation of Norway spruce wood. Three strains of P. abieticola (Pa1-3) were grown on pieces of Norway spruce sapwood and heartwood for 50 days in laboratory conditions. Enzymatic activity was determined using spectrophotometry. Pleurotus abieticola produced laccase, LiP, MnP and VP. The activity of laccase was low, ranging 0–3.696 and 0–0.806 mU/μg of protein in sapwood and heartwood, respectively. The highest activity in Pa1 = 3.696 mU/μg of protein in sapwood and in Pa3 = 0.806 mU/μg of protein in heartwood was observed after 30 and 50 days of incubation, respectively. The activity of LiP was also low, ranging 0–0.188 and 0–0.271 mU/μg of protein in sapwood and heartwood, respectively. The highest activity in Pa1 = 0.271 mU/μg of protein in sapwood and in Pa2 = 0.188 mU/μg of protein in heartwood was observed after 40 and 20 days of incubation, respectively. The activity of MnP ranged 0–17.618 and 0–12.203 mU/μg of protein in sapwood and heartwood, respectively. This enzymatic activity peaked at the 50th day of culture on sapwood for the Pa3 strain (17.618 mU/μg of protein) and at the 20th day of culture on heartwood for the Pa1 strain (12.203 mU/μg of protein). The activity of VP with manganese-oxidising properties was found to be high in all strains of P. abieticola, ranging 0–39.19 and 0–59.153 mU/μg of protein in sapwood and heartwood, respectively, whereas the activity of VP with guaiacol-oxidising properties was very low for all P. abieticola strains, ranging 0–0.248 and 0–0.225 mU/μg of protein in sapwood and heartwood, respectively. The values of released hydroxyphenols in P. abieticola strains ranged 24.915–139.766 and 25.19–84.562 µg of protocatechuic acid/ml in sapwood and heartwood, respectively. The values of released methoxyphenols for the evaluated strains of P. abieticola ranged 7.225–23.789 and 1.953–20.651 µg of vanillic acid/ml in sapwood and heartwood, respectively. Further studies with a higher number of strains of this species as well as an optimisation of conditions for the measurement of ligninolytic activity are needed.

The paper presents the results of the research on the accumulation of nutrients and heavy metals in needles and bark of Picea abies and Picea omorika. In this research, the age of the needles and the content of the examined components in the soil were taken into account. The research was conducted within the area of the forest at the University botanic garden in Košice (Slovakia). The little acidification of the soil that was found under the spruce crowns slightly changed with the depth (0.0–0.2 m, 0.2–0.4 m, 0.4–0.6 m). Under the stand of P. abies, a lower content of organic matter was demonstrated, than under the trees of P. omorika. The tested soil samples were low in nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium, and sufficiently rich in potassium and magnesium. The spruce needles were dominated by macroelements, and their concentrations varied depending on age and species. Both P. abies and P. omorika needles were acidic, with 1-year-old needles showing higher acidity. Low nitrogen content in the needles of the studied spruce was found, and the N:P ratio did not exceed 3.5. Statistically significant differences were found in the content of N, K, Ca, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu and Cd in 1-year-old needles and pH, N, P, Ca, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu and Cd in 2-yearold needles of spruces. The results also indicate that the bark of the studied spruce is acidic, with pH values of 4.70 (P. abies) and 4.15 (P. omorika). The P. abies bark accumulates higher amounts of Mg, Ca, Ni, Cu and Mn, and the P. omorika bark accumulates more N, P, K, Zn, Fe and Cd. The research indicates that both spruce species barks are suitable for comparative studies on bioindication of environment quality.

Opis:
Monocultures of Norway spruce widely used for afforestation of drained peat soils often have low productivity and decline in vitality. The research aim was to elucidate: (1) imbalances in the nutrient status of soil and plants in relation to Norway spruce crown status and annual increment on drained peat soil in the sub-boreal zone; (2) the suitability of using proline accumulation as a biomarker for Norway spruce vitality and stress in nutrient imbalance conditions. The study was conducted at five forest (Oxalidosa turf. mel.) sites in Latvia, each containing trees with different crown condition status. Chemical analyses of soil and spruce needles, assessment of tree crown vitality and annual increment measurements were done. Our results revealed serious disturbances in the supply of nutrients, which is an important factor in the decline of Norway spruce in monoculture stands on drained peat soils. Deficiency of K, Fe, Cu, B, N and P was found in the current year needles for all trees, but in damaged trees (≥61% defoliation, ≥61% discoloration) Zn deficiency was also found. For 2-year-old needles, deficiency of K, P, S, Zn, and Cu was found in all trees, additionally, deficiency of Fe was found in healthy and medium damaged trees (26–60% defoliation, 21–60% discoloration), and N deficiency was found for medium damaged and damaged trees. Thus, K, Cu, B, Fe concentrations had significant negative correlations with crown status parameters – defoliation, discoloration, and density. K and B deficiency could play the most significant causal role in decreased stem increment. The results revealed that the stress amino-acid proline is a reliable biomarker, having a significant relationship with spruce crown condition parameters, annual increment and nutrient status in needles – low levels of K, Fe, S, Cu, B, N. The increase in proline content in spruce needles was pronounced in moderately damaged trees, indicating the potential for the use of proline accumulation as early stress indicator for spruce. Therefore, further studies on the identification of early stress and factors affecting nutrient uptake and accumulation in needles are particularly valuable for evaluation of stand management options before significant decline of spruce stands.

Opis:
Creating strip roads in second age class stands is an indispensible operation for carrying out thinning. It is especially important in places where there is an intention to do a first thinning using mechanised thinning operations. Felling trees to create strip roads results in altered conditions for the tree growth of neighbouring trees. In particular, this is due to an increase in exposure to sunlight. This can lead to changes in the growth of trees and consequently changes in the morphology of the trunk and the development of defects. The objective of this paper was to analyse the frequency of the presence of particular defects in the structure and shape of spruce ina five-year period after the creation of a strip road. The research was carried out in an artificially regenerated spruce stand within the spruce’s natural, northern habitat in Poland. A 34-year-old stand underwent a systematic thinning scheme which involved the removal of every eighth tree row. The analysis was carried out on trees growing both adjacent to the strip roads (which had a greater growing area around them and greater access to sunlight) as well as trees from further within the stand. Diameter growth was taken in three places: at breast height, in the middle of the trunk between breast height and the base of the crown, as well as at the base of the crown. The average incremental growth, pith eccentricity taper and ovality were calculated. No statistically significant difference in defects between the trees growing by the strip road and those growing further in the stand was observed. Greater taper on mid-tree logs in comparison to butt logs was observed. Insignificant changes in the morphology of the trunks, supports the validity of cutting strip roads in second age class stands.
Nie zaobserwowano występowania statystycznie istotnych różnic pomiędzy analizowanymi cechami drzew PS i WD, jednakże u drzew rosnących PS zaobserwowano istotnie większą zbieżystość kłód środkowych w porównaniu z odziomkowymi.

The antifungal properties of selected essential oils, i.e. lavender, mint, orange, spruce and thyme oils, were checked in vitro to fungi isolated from blue spruce (Picea pungens Engelm.) and its cultivar ‘Glauca’. The degree and extent of antifungal activity for essential oils listed above were tested on the following fungi: Acremonium tubakii, Anthostomella conorum, Arthrinium state of Apiospora montagnei, Aureobasidium pullulans, Botryodiplodia rubi, Fusarium camptoceras, F. moniliforme var. lactis, Penicillium canescens, Phoma pomorum, Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii, Ulocladium consortiale and Zythiostroma pinastri. Among essential oils tested the thyme oil showed the highest antifungal activity to all fungi under examination even at the lowest concentration used. The mint, lavender and spruce oils demonstrated a medium activity. The lowest activity was found for orange oil.
W warunkach in vitro badano właściwości grzybobójcze wybranych olejków eterycznych, tj. lawendowego, miętowego, pomarańczowego, świerkowego i tymiankowego, w stosunku do grzybów wyizolowanych z roślin świerka kłującego (Picea pungens Engelm.) i jego odmiany ‘Glauca’. Stopień i zakres działania grzybobójczego wyżej wymienionych olejków przetestowano na grzybach: Acremonium tubakii, Anthostomella conorum, Arthrinium state of Apiospora montagnei, Aureobasidium pullulans, Botryodiplodia rubi, Fusarium camptoceras, F. moniliforme var. lactis, Penicillium canescens, Phoma pomorum, Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii, Ulocladium consortiale i Zythiostroma pinastri. Średnią aktywność grzybobójczą wykazały olejki: miętowy, lawendowy i świerkowy. Najmniej skuteczny okazał się olejek pomarańczowy.

Opis:
The juvenile height growth of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was studied in 1095 spruce provenances included in the IUFRO inventory provenance test of 1964/68. Trees growing on the experimental site established in Krynica in the Beskid Sądecki Mts. (Carpathians) were measured at ca. 3-year intervals in the period 1969-1988, from the age of 6 years (i.e. 2 years of planting) to 25 years. The variability of tree height in this spruce population was assessed on the basis of the means expressed in units of standard deviation, calculated for each provenance and each geographical region of Krutzsch in successive years of measurement. Using the standardised units made it possible to characterise the dynamics of spruce growth in provenances from 95 geographical regions representing the whole European range of the species. The effects of geographical region, tree age and their interaction on the variability of height growth within this range were estimated using multi-way analysis of variance with replicated measurements. The regions showing similar spruce growth trends were grouped by using hierarchical cluster analysis. The results on the juvenile dynamics of height growth showed that spruce provenances from various geographical regions of Krutzsch differ significantly in their genetic reactivity. Based on this, several groups of regions were identified: (1) regions with average or weak but stable spruce growth characterised by no significant effects of age or genotype × age interaction in the whole measuring period, or regions with height growth improving with age; (2) regions of spruce provenances constituting a selection elite, with very good height growth in the whole measuring period or in its later part, characterised by no G × A interaction; (3) regions with varied genetic reactivity of height growth dynamics in the juvenile period, and regions of Scandinavian populations with poorest height growth in the whole measuring period. The studies proved that spruce provenances from the regions of Štiavnické Pohorie, Low Tatras (Slovakia), Masurian Lakeland, Augustów Lakeland, Podlasie, Silesian Beskid Mts., Beskid Żywiecki Mts. (Poland), Jutland (Denmark), Bihor Mts., Transylvania, and Eastern Carpathians (Romania) have a high selection value.

Opis:
Agroleśnictwo sprzyja efektywnemu wykorzystaniu zasobów glebowych i środowiskowych w porównaniu z uprawą monokulturową. Integracja drzew w uprawie rolniczej poprawa żyzność i właściwości fizyczne, biologiczne i chemiczne gleby, a w konsekwencji żywności, drewna i paszy.
Agroforestry is a type of farming that integrates agricultural crops with trees, and is a way of managing the land in which crop and livestock production coexist in the same area with woody plants and/or shrubs. Agroforestry promotes efficient use of soil and environmental resources compared to monoculture farming. The integration of trees in agroforestry improves the fertility and physical, biological and chemical properties of the soil, and consequently food, timber and fodder. Such cultivation promotes an appropriate microclimate by influencing soil properties and moisture content. Integration of trees on agricultural land provides additional climate and environmental benefits and can be a cost-effective and climate-friendly practice. The article identifies native coniferous forest tree species that could potentially be part of agroforestry crops with a view to their use in functional foods.

We carried out an experiment with using the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. for sanitation of active infested trees. We used 15 active infested trees from which 5 stems were treated with an insecticide, 5 were treated with solution of the tested entomopathogenic fungus and 5 were left as control. The used insecticide was pyretroid Fury 10 EW. We used a biopreparation based on the entomopathogenic fungus B. bassiana in form of wettable powder. The material was diluted. The suspension contained 107spores of the tested entomopathogenic fungus in 1 ml. The suspension was applied across the whole stem surface. We succeeded to infect about 28.75% of Ips typographus L. individuals in the treated stems. The number of live individuals was comparable with the variant using the insecticide.

Opis:
Testing of the fatigue strength along wood fibres at different moisture contents. The paper determines the effect of wood moisture content on the fatigue strength in compression along fibres. The method of determining the maximum stress at the proportional limit was used for the measurements. Fatigue strength was investigated for three wood species: pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.), bearded birch (Betula pendula Roth.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L.), with two moisture contents: close to the absolutely dry state and above the fibre saturation point. The ratio of fatigue strength to short term strength depends on moisture content and is similar for birch (70.3% in the dry state and 72.1% in the wet state), for oak (67.4% and 69.5% in both states) and for spruce (66.6% in the dry state and 68.1% in the wet state). The moisture content of the wood clearly influences the fatigue strength of the wood. On average, the fatigue strength of wood with moisture contents above the fibre saturation point constitutes about 0.20 of the fatigue strength of wood with moisture contents close to 0%. This tendency was found regardless of the tested species. The simplified method for testing fatigue strength at the limit of proportionality has shown its limited usefulness, requiring further analysis and comparison with other methods in order to be thoroughly tested and possibly improved.
Wytrzymałość zmęczeniową zbadano dla trzech gatunków drewna: dębu szypułkowego (Quercus robur L.), brzozy brodawkowatej (Betula pendula Roth.) i świerka pospolitego (Picea abies L.), o dwóch wilgotnościach: zbliżonej do stanu absolutnie suchego i powyżej punkt nasycenia włókien. Uproszczona metoda badania wytrzymałości zmęczeniowej na granicy proporcjonalności wykazała swoją ograniczoną przydatność, wymagającą dalszej analizy i porównania z innymi metodami w celu dokładnego przetestowania i ewentualnego udoskonalenia.

Opis:
The article presents a method of extracting galactoglucomannans from conifers: spruce and larch. Galactoglucomannans (GGMs) were extracted from shavings of Polish varieties of spruce and larch, using thermal and enzymatic treatment in an aqueous environment. The composition of the extracted GGMs (depending on the extraction method) was characterized by varied content of individual monosaccharides, i.e. glucose, galactose and mannose, as well as the average particle mass. The quantitative and qualitative composition of the extracted GGMs is an important factor affecting the possibility of their wide employment in modifying cellulose fibre-containing materials in order to improve their barrier qualities, and as biological agents in plant health products. GC/MS and SEC chromatographic tests and 13C NMR analysis made it possible to establish the composition and structural changes of the acquired GGMs.
W artykule przedstawiono sposób wyodrębniania galaktoglukomannanów z drzew iglastych: świerku i modrzewia. Galaktoglukomannany (GGM) wyodrębniono z trocin drzewnych krajowych odmian świerku i modrzewia z zastosowaniem obróbki termicznej i enzymatycznej w środowisku wodnym.
