The aim of the work was a omparative analysis of laryngologic diseases in swimmers and people swimming for recreation. The examination was carried out in the period from April 2004 to April 2005 in the group of 64 swimmers aged 10-25 years, and the group of 53 fourth-year students of the University of Physical Education and Sport in Gdańsk. The information was compiled on the basis of a uestionnaire. The results were later estimated by means of comparison between the kinds of laryngologic diseases occurring in both groups. It was shown that the kinds of diseases differ in competition swimmers and people swimming for recreation. It was also found that the competition swimmers more frequently suffer from diseases of the upper airways among which the dominating problems seem to be the infections of the nose, sinuses, ears and throat.
Celem pracy była analiza porównawcza schorzeń laryngologicznych występujących u pływaków i u osób pływających rekreacyjnie. Badanie przeprowadzono od kwietnia 2004 do kwietnia 2005 wśród 64 pływaków w wieku 10-25 lat i 53 studentów IV roku AWFiS w Gdańsku. Informacje zebrano przy pomocy kwestionariusza ankiety. Uzyskane wartości oceniano przez porównanie występujących schorzeń laryngologicznych w badanych grupach. Wykazano występowanie różnic w rodzajach schorzeń wśród zawodników pływania i pływających rekreacyjnie. Stwierdzono, że pływacy częściej zapadają na schorzenia górnych dróg oddechowych wśród których dominują infekcje nosa i zatok oraz uszu i gardła.

The author focuses on Educator’s story about the alleged death of Orestes that is found in the very center of Sophocles’ Electra, vv. 680-762). However, this story is interesting for him not as an integral part of the tragedy but as a kind of sports report of a chariot race. He argues that although the report is not a real coverage of a sports event, we can perceive a kind of prototype for such a report that may be based on a real event, as it contains several elements that we expect from such a report. It brilliantly depicts the atmosphere of sports competitions, the tension prevailing among the competitors, and it shows the changing moods of the spectators present on the hippodrome. Sophocles’ commentator is an expert in the discipline he is talking about, he knows the competitors, their origin, as well as the advantages of particular teams. He can guess the charioteers’ tactical plans and intentions, he knows about how a chariot should be driven, he can transmit a competitor’s joy at his success and the tragedy of his defeat. He does not dazzle the readers with too many details, but he rather refers to their knowledge and experience, leaving a lot of space to their creative imagination. All in all we get a report that maintains a high standard and is brilliantly composed and dramatized and that keeps the readers in suspense, first awakening interest in him, and then evoking strong emotions; it can keep the atmosphere that is created in this way till the very end. The multitude of artistic means that are employed here is subjected to these ends. The Introduction shows earlier attempts at describing sporting events that are found in Homer’s works and in lyrical poets, with particular stress on Pindar’s poems.

Omówiony został także wpływ i znaczenie poszczególnych czynników lokalizacji na funkcjonowanie ośrodka narciarskiego.
The authors point to location as one of the basic factors affecting the competitiveness of a winter sports destination (understood as an area where skiers are provided with both basic and complementary services). The effect and significance of individual location factors as regards the functioning of a winter spoils destination have also been discussed.

The author takes a look at the professional sports market and identifies its characteristic features. He analyzes literature on the economics of sports and the sports industry and describes the conditions underlying the operations of sports organizations, the features of sports goods, competition on the sports market, the functioning of sports clubs, and the behavior of buyers on this market. This allows Sznajder to determine the characteristic features of the sports business and the professional sports market. Sznajder notes that sports have become a major industry today and that the sports market is increasingly global in nature. Sports clubs are transforming themselves from nonprofit associations into commercial companies that seek to be profitable and economical. Governments are changing their approach toward sports, and the systems for financing sports are being modified. The sports market is dual in nature, Sznajder says, because sports companies these days must do business according to both the business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) models. These two markets involve different kinds of sports products and different marketing approaches. The sports market shows considerable differences among market entities and their goals. At the same time, sports organizations, which act as suppliers on this market, heavily depend on the behavior of sports fans as customers. All this makes the sports industry a regulated market, the author concludes.

This article presents a theoretical basis for techniques of physical exercises developed by Joseph Pilates. The method, as part of the so-called Body Mind Exercises group, first gained recognition among professional dancers, actors and choreographers but has become more popular and is now regularly applied in sport, fitness and physiotherapy. The paper presents methodological and biomechanical principles of this exercise system (oriented to strengthening the whole muscular system, both deep – stabilizing and superficial – moving parts, interaction „from the core” on the slings forming superficial musculo-fascial system, the work in open and closed kinetic chains). Historical background of the method and principles of performing the exercises using the Pilates Method (concentration, control, centering, breathing, postural alignment, flow, stamina, relaxation) is provided. The paper presents instruments (the Cadillac, the Reformer) and accessories (Swiss Ball, Overball, Tubings) that can be used to enhance the exercise program in the discussed activity improvement system. The final part of the article includes a critical review of physiotherapy and sports medicine literature pertaining to application of the presented method in kinesitherapy of patients at different ages, particularly in elderly people. Prior experience of physiotherapists using this technique in their work has indicated a possibility of applying the technique in the therapy of patients with various neuro-muscular dysfunctions and in sports medicine. The authors hope to encourage the environment of physiotherapists to enhance their professional skills with elements of Pilates’ method.

The contribution is presenting the results of research realized with a sample of 744 respondents from the Banska Bystrica region. It is possible to deduce from the obtained answers that cigarette smoking – even despite anti-smoking education – is still attractive and popular. This is proved for example by 38% of pupils aged 10–11 who have already tried smoking as well as 25% of pupils who repeatedly smoked. Out of the whole sample of respondents, up to 65% of them tried smoking and 56.5% smoked again. Concurrently with the raising age of pupils there increases also the number of those who repeated smoking, so that in the category of 17–18 years of age it reaches as many as 71.5%. The numbers of pupils smoking on a daily basis are alarming (13–14 years of age 69.8%, 17–18 years of age 63%), and they are higher than those reported by other authors. The most frequent reason for first cigarette smoking was curiosity, around 75%. Pupils in most cases judge that sports can be a proper tool against smoking. Only 15.4% of them answered negatively. A relatively low percentage of respondents think that a sportsman must not smoke (55.6%); we assumed that there would be a larger number of them.

The article raises the topic of the relation between female roles and sports roles on the example of the collectivity of women who professionally do sports that are commonly associated rather with masculinity than with femininity: mountaineering, skimountaineering and adventure racing. Traditionally, and to some extent also nowadays, professional sport is connected with male roles. Many autors claim that demands of sports are incompatible with demands of socially defined female roles. As a result female athletes face the role conflict which is exceptionally strong in disciplines which maintained their “male” character until now. The aim of the research described in this article was to show the issue of conflict or cohesion between femininity and professional sport from the perspective of women active in “male” sports mentioned above. The research was based on the methodology of grounded theory. As a result author intended to show the topic “from inside”, referring to the humanistic factor and showing the complexity of the problem. Various types of material were used in the research: opinions of female athletes themselves, referringo to whether it is possible to accomodate being a woman and alpinist, skialpinist or adventure racer, and, on the other side, their own biographies and personal experiences referring to this issue.
Artykuł podejmuje problematykę relacji pomiędzy rolami kobiecymi a rolami sportowymi na przykładzie zbiorowości kobiet, uprawiających wyczynowo dyscypliny, kojarzone w społeczeństwie raczej z męskością niż z kobiecością: wspinaczkę wysokogórską, narciarstwo wysokogórskie (skialpinizm) oraz ekstremalne rajdy przygodowe (Adventure Racing, AR). Sport wyczynowy tradycyjnie, a w pewnym wymiarze także współcześnie, związany jest z rolami męskimi. Zdaniem wielu autorów jego wymagania nie dają się pogodzić z wymogami, formułowanymi przez społeczeństwo wobec kobiet, stawiając sportsmenki w sytuacji konfliktu ról, zaś problem ten szczególnie wyrazisty jest w tych dyscyplinach, które do dziś zachowały swój "męski" charakter. Przedstawione tu badanie miało na celu ukazanie kwestii konfliktu bądź spójności pomiędzy kobiecością a sportem wyczynowym z perspektywy samych kobiet, zaangażowanych w omawiane tu "męskie" dyscypliny.

Prezentowana publikacja koncentruje się na jakości i cenie produktów na przykładzie polskiej marki artykułów sportowych - HiMountain. W pracy przedstawiono czynniki oddziałujące na satysfakcję klienta kupującego artykuły sportowe. Następnie dokonano analizy pomiędzy jakości ą i ceną produktów w celu określenia, o ile więcej klient jest skłonny zapłacić za produkt wyższej jakości. W dalszej części pracy porównano marki artykułów sportowych z punktu widzenia ich jakości postrzeganej przez klienta.
The presented paper concentrates on quality and price of product analysis on example of Polish outdoor brand - HiMountain. We investigate factors affecting customer satisfaction of outdoor products. Then we analyse relations between quality and prices of outdoor products to determine how much more customer would like to pay for better quality product. Finally there is a comparison between outdoor brands from quality of product point of view.
