The article is devoted to substantiation of significance of speculative operations and follows the goal to study their condition and development. It is substantiated that existence and stability of the securities market plays a significant role in development of financial market, which in turn becomes a key element in the mechanism of economy. The authors emphasize that the liquid market continues to function even with a large number of economic agents while price fluctuation of securities have a little change. Yet, arrival of speculators increases the number of participants in stock exchange transactions, thus promoting competition and, ultimately, more efficient detection of real value of economic subject. It has been proven that stock trading is very attractive for those who are interested in a combination of excitement and the possibility of a large quick profit, and is an extraordinary opportunity for profit as process of trading itself appears to be technically simple. It has been established that speculation can be carried out on the stock exchange both using cash and in futures transactions. However, operating with cash transactions has fewer combinations and in general less profitable, thus the main arena of speculators becomes the market of future transactions. It has been proven that speculative profits are possible during both “bullish games” and in shorting’s, thus becoming an important tool for additional attraction of investments. In summary, speculations have a crucial role in achieving a balance between capital market participants.

The article is a critical reflection on the problem of agency of objects, which is analyzed on the basis of chair renewal in the perspective of Graham Harman’s Object-Oriented Ontology. In the course of the analysis it appears that the theory of the American philosopher is insufficient to grasp the problem of objects activity, therefore the article proposes an authorial posthuman category - the concept of performative capital - intended to answer the question of how objects work and, simultaneously, how they exist.

This article analyzes selected “speculative gestures” (Debaise, Stengers) in contemporary Polish performative arts which stage speculative ecologies. Speculative ecologies are different ways of thinking about ecology, alternative to the modern concept of nature as inert matter separated from humans and bereft of all agency. The analysis aims to unravel some nonanthropocentric modes of distributing agency between humans and nonhumans and ways of knowing they posit. The article focuses specifically on selcted hybrid projects emerging from a fusion of artistic strategies, scientific protocols and new technology design. Examples discussed here demonstrate how the initiators of such projects at the intersection of nature, culture and technology perform three types of speculative ecologies: by staging polyphonic assemblages (Lowenhaupt-Ting) as contingent encounters between human and nonhuman lifeways, by questioning received notions of natural environment, and by registering the agency of abiotic existents as proper ecological actors.

Covid-19 pandemic has brought public attention to digital methods of modeling contagion, which have been used not only to predict the future of the infection, but also assess its scope of impact on population and the chances for achieving herd immunity. As a result new outbreak narratives come into being in which algorithmic data processing gains agency in shaping the dynamics of contagion. His unprecedented reliance on modeling tools has decidedly changed the way we think about epidemic, conceptualized now as a phenomenon which to an equal extent is shaped by natural, cultural and technological factors. He paper argues that the major outlet for these new metaphors of contagion, which Milton Singer termed syndemic, are speculative narratives combining fiction with scientific and medical data as well as insights into the functioning of the digital modeling apparatus. His aspect of the current pandemic provides a good vantage point for taking a closer look at a handful of speculative narratives which bring to the foreground the relationship between modeling and social impact of contagion. By reading Michael Crichton’s technothriller The Andromeda Strain (1969) and its sequel, Daniel H. Wilson’s The Andromeda Evolution (2019), I intend to demonstrate how speculative fabulations engages and contests methods of contagion modeling, bringing into play other forms of non-scientiIc knowledge and practices of survival.

At the turn of the twentieth century, the debate between supporters of internal and external relations showed how our assumptions on the nature of relations result in ontological, epistemic, and ethical commitments. In this debate, Alfred North Whitehead provided the most articulated and satisfying account through his “philosophy of the organism,” which holds relations to be internal yet vectorial, without excluding completely external relations. Today, the debate has become once again topical and constitutes a core issue for speculative realism. This paper aims to show how the theory of external relations endorsed by some leading figures of speculative realism (Meillassoux, Harman, Bryant) does not suffice to preserve the desiderata it was designed for, and how a more serious consideration of Whitehead’s theory would have beneficial effects on the ontological and ethical issues of this rejuvenated metaphysical discourse.

This article explores the relation between cinema and philosophy through the lens of interest shown by some filmmakers in the lives and works of philosophers. It begins by delving into contemporary perspectives on the relationship between philosophy and cinema. In order to assess how the constitutive dissimilarity of the two terms and the ways in which they can be brought together are at the origin of speculative short circuits and experiences of wonder, it brings together the works of thinkers – Cavell, Benjamin, and Kracauer; and filmmakers Rossellini, Montaldo, Keaton, and Jarman. Reflecting on the aesthetic and cultural impact of cinema is all the more important given the current omnipresence of images and prosthetic technologies that, with their incessant solicitations, threaten the processes of apprehension, learning, and conveying of knowledge. Thinking and perceiving differently thus becomes an essential function of cinema, one keenly performed in Safaa Fathy’s Derrida’s Elsewhere, analyzed in the last two sections.

The article contains reflections on the “speculative realism”, a direction in 21st century philosophy initiated by Graham Harman, whose books (The Quadruple Object, Object-Oriented Ontology. A New Theory of Everything) continue and process Martin Heidegger’s concept of “the quadruple” (das Geviert), and they also use the ideas of such thinkers as Edmund Husserl and Bruno Latour. Dressing an attractive “costume” and speaking an understandable “language”, speculative fiction tells about matters important to the audience. Mary Shelley’s iconic Frankenstein is a pivotal work in the Western canon. Since its publication in 1818, the novel has been re-written and adapted many times. Shelley’s magnum opus sublimely evokes the postlapsarian condition of the fallen, while also capturing the imminent fear of technology, scientific progress and artificial procreation. The paper aims to explore the Frankenstein legacy and the development of Frankensteinian motifs in Atwood’s speculative fiction. More precisely, the paper focuses on The Handmaid’s Tale (1985), The MaddAddam Trilogy – Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), MaddAddam (2013), and The Heart Goes Last (2015), analyzing how postmodern literature recycles and incorporates elements from Frankenstein to reflect (on) contemporary anxieties and to insist on the fluid discursivity of monstrosity.

Research on the pricing of stocks listed on the Polish market shows a contradiction with the classic CAPM. The results of these studies are consistent with the results carried out on other developed markets. The reasons for inconsistent pricing are not known; this is the main objective of this work. It is a continuation of the authors’ previous work on the impact of speculation and penny stocks on the pricing in light of the ICAPM. Despite the scientific justifications for pricing in light of the ICAPM, a common estimate of the capital cost for companies is still performed on the basis of the classic CAPM. It has been conjectured that speculative stocks contribute to incompatible pricing in light of the CAPM. The elimination of speculative stocks would allow for the proper estimate of the cost of capital without the need of complicated and laborious ICAPM applications. The research is conducted on the basis of stocks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange from 1995 through 2012. The tested period is divided into two separate sub-periods: 1995–2005 (the years preceding Poland’s accession to the EU) and 2005–12 (the years of Poland’s membership in the EU). The analyzed stocks are grouped into quintile portfolios according to two variants. The pricing tests are carried out in three modes. In Mode, 1 all listed stocks are analyzed. In Modes 2 and 3, speculative stocks are excluded from the study. The research results prove the validity of the adopted conjectures.

Jednocześnie omawia naturę badanej społeczność i to, w jaki sposób wpisuje się ona w stosowany przez niego aparat teoretyczny. Drugą połowę artykułu autor przeznacza na analizę internetowych wypowiedzi fanów na temat ich fandomu. Tekst kończy stwierdzenie, że teoria społecznych światów lepiej odpowiada na potrzeby badawcze niż termin subkultura oraz wyraża nadzieję, że może przyczynić się do głębszego poznania rzeczywistości społecznej
This paper constitutes a critical approach to the concept of subculture. In the first part, which is devoted to theoretical issues, the author lists the intellectual threats arising from the use of the term ‘subculture’ and suggests introducing ‘the theory of social worlds’ instead. At the same time, he discusses the nature of the studied community and how it fits in his theoretical apparatus. The second part of this paper is devoted to the analysis of online discussions conducted by fans about their fandom. The conclusion of this paper is that ‘the theory of social worlds’ is more adequate in this particular context than the term ‘subculture’ and it may contribute to a broader understanding of the social reality

Rozważania w niniejszym artykule dotyczą roli glosariuszy w tekstach literatury spekulatywnej. Definiuje się ją jako superkategorię obejmującą wszystkie teksty, które nie opisują rzeczywistości i typologizowane są w obrębie takich konwencji literackich, jak: fantasy, science fiction, horror. Perspektywą dla analiz jest teza, że we współczesnej praktyce komunikacyjnej wyraźnie wyodrębnia się kilka odmiennych sposobów rozumienia pojęcia glosariusz niż w tradycyjnym ujęciu, co ma swoje odzwierciedlenie w tekstach literatury spekulatywnej. Glosariusze przyjmują tutaj postać wariantu wzorca gatunkowego, stąd do analiz wykorzystuje się narzędzia genologii lingwistycznej. Badane glosariusze najbliższe wzorcowi są w aspekcie strukturalnym. W wymiarze makrostruktury stanowią wykaz haseł ułożonych alfabetycznie i umieszczonych na końcu książki lub w osobnym woluminie, w wymiarze mikrostruktury zawierają różne objętościowo i graficznie wyróżnione artykuły hasłowe. Ich odmienność sytuuje się na poziomie pragmatycznym i poznawczym, co jest uwarunkowane tym, że umieszczone na peryferiach tekstu, zajmują uprzywilejowany obszar pragmatycznego wymiaru dzieła, czyli jego oddziaływania na czytelnika. Pełnią one zarówno typową dla tego gatunku mowy funkcję preskryptywną, jak i wynikającą ze współczesnej praktyki komunikacyjnej funkcję deskryptywną. Glosariusze w tekstach literatury spekulatywnej wobec tekstu głównego odgrywają różnorodne role: od słowniczka definiującego wprowadzane nominacje bohaterów, nazwy toponimiczne, terminy itp., po różnorodne komentarze wyjaśniające na przykład niuanse fabuły, perspektywę kulturową czy mitologiczną przedstawianych treści. Często stanowią w pewnym sensie drugą narrację obok tej zasadniczej w tekście głównym.
The considerations of this article concern the role of glossaries in the texts of speculative literature. Speculative literature is defined as a super category covering all texts that do not describe reality, and are typologized within such literary genres as: fantasy, science fiction, horror. Because in contemporary communication practice, one can distinguish several ways of understanding the term glossary, this article assumes that the studied texts can be typologies as glossaries, and in speculative literature they take the new variant of the genre pattern. Hence, the tools of linguistic genology will be used for analyzes. The article describes that the examined glossaries are the closest to the model in terms of structure. In the macrostructure dimension, glosaries are a list of entries, arranged alphabetically and placed at the end of the book or in a separate volume, in the microstructure dimension, they contain different volume and graphically distinguished entry articles. The main difference is situated on the pragmatic and cognitive level, which is conditioned by the fact that, placed on the periphery of the text, they occupy a privileged area of the pragmatic dimension of the work. They fulfill both the prescriptive function typical of this type of speech, and the descriptive function resulting from modern communicative practice. Glossaries in the texts of speculative literature fulfill various roles in relation to the main text: from a dictionary defining the nominations of characters entered, toponymic names, terms, etc., to various comments explaining, for example, the nuances of the plot, the cultural or mythological perspective of the presented content. They are often constituted, in a sense, as a second narrative situated next to the main one in the main text.

The chosenmethod additionally allowed us to set time frames for potential bubbles. Theresults have shown that speculative bubble episodes appeared between 2006–2007both in fine wine market and in most of selected traditional stock exchanges.However, only the fine wine market recorded the second wave of speculativebubbles between 2010–2011.

This article focuses on the representations of the future offered by two recent Indigenous speculative novels: Louise Erdrich’s Future Home of the Living God (2017) and Rebecca Roanhorse’s Trail of Lightning (2018), in the context of their decolonial potential. The analysis of the selected literary texts pays special attention to the status of women and its revision, as well as to the re-narrativization of space in the face of the anthropogenic climate change, and their significance to Indigenous decolonial project. In order to facilitate the discussion of the Indigenous speculative novels, the article refers to recent theories in Native American studies concerning Indigenous futurism, Native dystopia, and definitions of decolonization.
