Opis:: This article employs the concepts of spectres and haunting to analyse Graham Swift’s Mothering Sunday: A Romance (2016) as a commentary on (literary) history and its economy of spectres. Referring to Jacques Derrida’s notions of haunting, inheritance, and time, I focus on the spectres of literary modernism and the First World War to explore the ways in which Swift’s novella questions the canonical representation of modernism and revises the conventional means of writing about the past, memory, and history. The analysis of Mothering Sunday approaches the spectre as a figure of repressed otherness and a reminder of what has been excluded or silenced, so as to trace some of the ghosts that appear in the book and to underline its melancholic, spectral character. Situating Swift’s novella within the context of contemporary cultural criticism, I propose to see it as a sign of a larger cultural and critical turn, where spectres have been assimilated into the structure of the everyday and where the experience of haunting has become a major expression of the present condition.

Opis:: This issue of AVANT is dedicated to hauntology, an approach originally defined by Jacques Derrida as a “logic of haunting” that is “larger and more powerful than an ontology or a thinking of Being,” and that “harbor[s] within itself, but like circumscribed places or particular effects, eschatology and teleology themselves” (Derrida 1994: 10). At a most general level, hauntology is a study of spectrality and spectres-that is, entities and processes that exceed any definite categorization; accordingly, it inevitably questions the established notions of being, thereby transforming the status of the objects and subjects of knowledge, and contesting the possibility of objectivity. The very idea of spectres-positioned as they are between worlds and times-disrupts the conventional means of measuring time and space, as well as all kinds of dichotomous conceptualizations, including “the sharp distinction between the real and the unreal, the actual and the inactual, the living and the non-living, being and non-being” (Derrida 1994: 11). Significantly for the articles collected in this issues, the figure of the spectre questions the divisions between texts, and the separation between the individual and the social/communal, thus palpably demonstrating the impossibility of examining any concept or text independently of others. Accordingly, instead of looking for certainties, the scholar of spectres looks for sites of crossings, borrowings, and contaminations, re-discovering traces of other times, places, and beings in the seemingly solid here and now, and producing somewhat melancholic accounts of a culture that is both already haunted and potentially haunting.

Opis:: The paper begins with an anecdote concerning one of most intriguing works of Frédéric Chopin, Nocturne in G-minor, Op. 15, nr 3. A story goes that Chopin composed this nocturn inspired by a performance of Hamlet and intended to name it: In the Graveyard. Regardless of whether this story is true or false, the implied plot-line of Chopin’s nocturn, developing from a wistful and then dramatic opening passage to the harmonious, hymn-like second part well fi ts the atmosphere of Shakespeare’s drama which does not preclude the possibility of consolation and the faith in transcendence, despite its prevalent preoccupation with ubiquitous iniquity, death and decay. In contrast with the rest of the play, however, act 1 scene 5, set in the graveyard, is marked by an entirely materialistic tendency, in the vein of the late medieval dance macabre. Still more unsettling is the vision of tenantless graves and the dead returning from the liminal space of the cemetery to the polis reserved for the living. The ghosts of the people who have died violent death are not harmless apparitions, fi gments of imagination, but as Quentin Meillassoux argues, they destroy the very boundary between life and death which safeguards our existence. The ghost of Banquo in Macbeth is a “living” example of such a radical subversion of the established dichotomies, which Shakespeare examines most carefully in his great tragedies. In the theatre of the 20th century, Shakespeare’s refl ection on the elusive boundary between the world of the living and the uncanny realm of the dead gained a great momentus in the perplexing stage production of Macbeth directed by a Lithuanian, Eimuntas Necrošius. The power of his vision stems from the connection of Shakespearean tragedy with the folk tradition of “Dziady”, an ancient Balto-Slavic custom commemorating the dead.

Opis:: Der Beitrag ist drei Wirtschaftstexten der österreichischen Autorin Elfriede Jelinek gewidmet, deren Anliegen die gegenwärtige Wirtschaftskrise sowie die Mechanismen und Handlungsweisen der modernen Finanzökonomie sind. Der Beitrag erörtert den fiktionalen und referenzlosen Charakter der spätkapitalistischen Finanzgeschäfte und deren ‚gespenstisches‘ Wesen. Die Immaterialität der aktuellen Finanzökonomie wurde am Beispiel der uneindeutigen, multiplen Sprache Jelinekscher „Textflächen“ und anhand der in den Texten thematisierten Prozesse der Fiktionalisierung und des Realitätsverlustes des Bank-Börsen-Systems demonstriert. Alle drei Werke problematisieren die ‚Kollateralschäden‘ des gespenstischen Finanzkapitalismus, zu denen die enteigneten und exkludierten Gespenster-Menschen, „homo sacer“ (Z. Bauman) gehören.
This article is devoted to three works by Austrian Nobel prize winner Elfriede Jelinek which deal with the contemporary economic crisis and with the mechanisms of financial economics. The analysis presented focuses mainly on the immaterial and unreal nature of today’s market whose essence and methods of operating is reminiscent of a spectre. This immaterial aspect of the economic and financial system is demonstrated on the example of an ambiguous and ambivalent language employed by Jelinek and in the fictionalization processes and disappearance of references, which are characteristic of market functioning. The works analysed also point out to human apparitions, or social outcasts (Z. Bauman’s Wasted Lives) as effects of the spectres of financial capitalism. Deprived of money and property, they fight for survival as underdogs.
Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony został trzem utworom austriackiej noblistki Elfriede Jelinek, w których podstawowym tematem jest współczesny kryzys gospodarczy oraz sposoby i mechanizmy funkcjonowania ekonomii finansowej. Zasadniczym aspektem, jaki poddany został analizie, jest niematerialny i odrealniony charakter współczesnego rynku, który w swojej istocie i sposobie działania przypomina widmo. Ten niematerialny wymiar systemu ekonomiczno-finansowego ukazany został na przykładzie niejednoznacznego, ambiwalentnego języka Jelinkowskich „powierzchni tekstowych” jak również w procesach fikcjonalizacji i utraty referencyjności, typowych dla funkcjonowania rynku. Wszystkie trzy teksty ukazują także skutki działania widma kapitalizmu finansowego jakimi są ludzie-zjawy, „ludzie na przemiał” (Z. Bauman), pozbawieni pieniędzy i własności oraz skazani na egzystencję na marginesie społeczeństwa.
