Opis:
In Western music culture instruments have been developed according to unique instrument acoustical features based on types of excitation, resonance, and radiation. These include the woodwind, brass, bowed and plucked string, and percussion families of instruments. On the other hand, instrument performance depends on musical training, and music listening depends on perception of instrument output. Since musical signals are easier to understand in the frequency domain than the time domain, much effort has been made to perform spectral analysis and extract salient parameters, such as spectral centroids, in order to create simplified synthesis models for musical instrument sound synthesis. Moreover, perceptual tests have been made to determine the relative importance of various parameters, such as spectral centroid variation, spectral incoherence, and spectral irregularity. It turns out that the importance of particular parameters depends on both their strengths within musical sounds as well as the robustness of their effect on perception. Methods that the author and his colleagues have used to explore timbre perception are: 1) discrimination of parameter reduction or elimination; 2) dissimilarity judgments together with multidimensional scaling; 3) informal listening to sound morphing examples. This paper discusses ramifications of this work for sound synthesis and timbre transposition.

Opis:
The paper presents comparison of results of impulse response spectral analysis that has been obtained using a method based on cross-correlation with results obtained using classical FFT. The presented non-Fourier method is achieved by correlating the analyzed signal and reference single-harmonic signals and using Hilbert transform to obtain an envelope of cross-correlation. The envelope of cross correlation makes it possible to calculate appropriate indicator and make its plot in frequency domain as a spectrum. The spectrum obtained this way has its advantage over the FFT that the spectral resolution does not depend on duration of signal. At the same time, the spectral resolution can be much greater than spectral resolution resultant from FFT. Obtained results show that presented non-Fourier method gives frequency readout more accurate in comparison to FFT when the impulse response is a short-time signal e.g. few dozen of miliseconds lasting.

Opis:
Rolling Elements Bearing (REB) condition monitoring is mainly based on the analysis of acceleration (vibration) signal in the load direction. This is one of the three components of the acceleration vector in 3D space: the main idea of this paper is the recovery of additional fault information from the other two acceleration vector components by combining them to obtain the modulus of the spatial acceleration (SAM) vector. The REB diagnostic performances of the SAM are investigated and compared to the load direction of vibration by means a rough estimator of the “Signal-to-Noise” Ratio and the Spectral Kurtosis. The SAM provides a higher SNR than the single load direction. Finally, Spectral Kurtosis driven Envelope analysis is performed for further comparison of the two signals: its results highlight that demodulation of the SAM isn’t stricly necessary to extract the fault features, which are already available in the raw signal spectrum.
