Aim: The increasing staff shortages in Polish surgery incline towards posing the following questions: What are the reasons for the reluctance of Polish doctors in training and residents to specialize in this field of medicine? What measures could be pursued to raise the interest of students and trainees in specializing in general surgery? The aim of this paper is to attempt to answer these questions. Material and methods: From August 5 to December 30, 2019, an online survey of doctors in training and resident doctors was conducted. The study covered 2,498 people. Results: The key reason indicated by young doctors of both sexes was the disproportion between the level of remuneration and professional responsibility. Other most commonly reported reasons include: high overtime, physical and mental strain at work, and fear of not being allowed by senior colleagues to perform surgery. Conclusions: In view of the aging Polish surgical staff and a decreasing number of young doctors interested in this field of medicine, it is necessary to introduce changes into their mode of education.

Nowadays Europe is facing major economic challenges that require an ambitious economic policy for the 21st century. The ability to continually generate and adapt new technologies, organizational solutions and new knowledge contribute to socio-economic development. Knowledge, technological development and continuous innovation are key elements for ensuring the development and competitive advantage of particular economies. Great opportunities for diffusion of innovations are related to the identification of potential, “power” of the region. The aim of the article is to present trends in the new concepts of regional development and to explain the issue of smart specializations as the potential of a region. The paper presents new trends in regional policy which focus on the identification of smart specialisations by Member States’ regions and on the preparation of new development strategies − 3S smart specialization strategies. The aim of the paper is also to explain the significance of clusters in process of smart specialization identification. The element connecting smart specialisation with clusters is the view that clusters are perceived as a favourable and facilitating identification of smart specialisations in regions.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to investigate the relationship between the cyclical fluctuations in Poland on a regional perspective and the level of specialization of regional economies. To do this, the correlation between the morphology features of regional business cycles and the level of their specialization was made. The morphology features were represented by such parameters: cycle length, phase length, standard deviation ratio, coefficient of variation ratio and average amplitude of upward and downward phases. The evolution of economic structures was measured by the Krugman specialization index. Assessing the GDP cyclical fluctuations in the Polish regions during 1996–2013, it can be concluded that the regions have different sensitivity to economy “shocks,” both positive and negative. The results of the regional specialization measuring are ambiguous. Most of them appear falling specialization, and the others show stable specialization levels. Despite a few exceptions, a correlation between the level of regional specialization and the degree of sensitivity to economic disturbances can be observed. Regions that are less specialized and have more-diversified production structures show greater resistance to economic fluctuations. This is confirmed by the analysis of the morphology of cycles on a regional basis.

This article highlights the key issues of outsourcing in the field of airport ground services. Both airlines and airports have gradually started to outsource these services, following governmental decisions in several countries regarding the commercialization and privatization of airports. Our research was based on data available from different airports showing a general trend in service outsourcing. There are particular situations in which both the airports and airlines take measures for insourcing services, mainly those related to passengers’ security in today’s global security conditions with threats of potential terrorist attacks – even when this is known to be a more expensive method of doing business. Modern technology provides conditions in which it is possible to reduce the number of operators, controllers and other staff, which gives the same chance for insourcing and outsourcing. Our contribution provides a general idea of outsourcing applied to the air business. The company cannot do everything – specialisation and differentiation means that an enterprise may carry out its business better and cheaper and can thus offer this service to other enterprises.

Research background: The identification of smart specialisations should be based on information allowing the identification of resources and capital in the regions, which constitute the unique value of the area providing for the development of competitive advantages based on innovations and achievements in the research and development activities.  Purpose of the article: The key goal is to present the proposal to use an aggregate (synthetic) measure for the purpose of identifying regional development potentials and next the initial smart specialisations (RSS). This approach is particularly useful at the very initial stage of recognizing the potential in the region, and ? after some modifications ? may offer a useful tool for assembling the de-velopment of industries (services) in the region. The additional goals are: (1) to organize the knowledge regarding statistical approaches and selected methods to be used in the process of identifying initial smart specialisations in regions (RSS); (2) exemplification of the presented methodology for the initial regional smart specialisations (RSS) identification in voivodeships in Poland based on a multivariate approach. Methods: Multivariate statistical analysis (MSA) methods are used in the identification procedure of initial regional smart specialisations (RSS), which allowed for performing the assessment in 4 areas: resources and capital; specialisation; development potential (dynamics); the involvement in research and development and innovative activities. They can also be extended with additional dimensions related to the cooperation of enterprises with social or environmental priorities. Findings & Value added: The conducted procedure allowed identifying NACE rev. 2 divisions useful in determining development potentials in Polish regions and later the initial smart specialisations (RSS). The identified initial RSS for Polish voivodeships can be a starting point for building regional smart specialisations based on values supply chain or other premises. Due to the universal nature of the proposed methodology, it can be widely used at the level of subregions, regions and the EU countries.

The paper shows that specialization, defined as offering products to companies from one or from two to four industries, is of great importance among SMEs in the gas sector. The analysis of the applied management methods allows us to conclude that the most important ones are those related to human capital.

The importance of services and the international trade in services is growing systematically. There are some reasons for that, especially the rapid development of IT technologies. This increase in the international trade in services is a global phenomenon, however there are some other specific issues, other than economic or technological, which might influence the trade in services in particular countries. As for the countries of the Central and Eastern Europe such a factor could be the accession to the European Union (EU). The objective of the paper is to analyse the export specialization of the Visegrad countries in the international trade in services and how it changed over seven years after the EU accession. The service sector comprises of a variety of highly heterogeneous economic activities and the diversity of services is also reflected in the international trade of particular countries. Generally, the trade theories deal with trade of goods, but there are some attempts already to apply these theories for services. To find out the export specialization based on the comparative advantage in particular services, the main categories of services are analysed based on the adjusted RCA index assumptions. The analysis prepared in the paper is based on the balance of payment statistics provided by the WTO. The article is concluded by discussing the questions about the export specialization of particular countries and how it changed after the accession to the EU.

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, low competitiveness of the economy and the deepening gap relative to the world’s economic powers was the key problem of the European Community. Also, weak innovativeness of the economy, underdeveloped R&D sector with inefficiency of public policy are seen as leading EU challenges These problems have become the basis for criticism of current innovation policy and the search for new methods, tools, and development trajectories. The answer to these challenges is the concept of smart regional specializations proposed along with a new vision of the development of the EU’s, known as Europe 2020 Strategy. Smart specialization is a new paradigm for building competitive advantage of regions. It is also a new way of regional innovation policy, aiming to eliminate barriers and failures in building innovation capacity of regions. The purpose of this article is to show the essence of the concept of regional smart specializations. Article identifies the theoretical assumptions and describes the key elements of this new approach. It exposes the novelty of the concept and identifies the challenges of its implementation.

There is a significant complexity of movements and an ability to adapt to changing situations during a match, hence, a factor which decides about sports rank of a player is their motor fitness. The assessment of muscle power output and abilities of coordination in high-rank players can be one of the most essential model indicators either in the process of athlete selection or in the process of sports training. The research question is: How the measured indicators of a somatic body construction and motor fitness condition the sports level of volleyball players who specialize in different tactical functions? The paper demonstrates the test results of 12 volleyball players from MKS Muszynianka – a vice-champion of Poland in 2009. Basic features of a somatic body construction were measured; the indicators of muscle dynamic strength, visual perception and visual-motor coordination were tested. The comparative analysis of the applied somatic and fitness indicators in the study explains both the model of choice of tactical specializations in the game and sports hierarchy of volleyball players at championship level. Lengthwise predispositions of a body construction are prominent in the model; however, fitness skills (muscle dynamic strength and visual-motor coordination) may well compensate for insufficient somatic indicators.

Trilobites achieved their maximum generic diversity in the Cambrian, but the peak of morphological disparity of their cranidia occurred in the Middle to Late Ordovician. Early to middle Cambrian trilobites with a specialized cephalon are rare, especially among the ptychoparioids, a group of libristomates featuring the so-called “generalized” bauplan. Here we describe an unusual ptychopariid trilobite Phantaspis auritus gen. et sp. nov. from the middle Cambrian (Miaolingian, Wuliuan) Mantou Formation in the Shandong Province, North China. This new taxon is characterized by a cephalon with an extended anterior area of double-lobate shape resembling a pair of rabbit ears in later ontogenetic stages; a unique type of cephalic specialization that has not been reported from other trilobites. Such a peculiar cephalon as in Phantaspis provides new insights into the variations of cephalic morphology in middle Cambrian trilobites, and may represent a heuristic example of ecological specialization to predation or an improved discoidal enrollment.

Regional trade agreements and the majority of bilateral trade agreements were found not to be efective in increasing China's foreign trade. Only the agreements with Chile, Costa Rica and Switzerland were efective in increasing China's trade volume. Moreover, the results for Chile were driven by increases in both exports and imports, while for Costa Rica and Switzerland only by increased imports from these countries.

For several years, marine tourism market has been experiencing a renaissance and is one of the fastest growing segment of the tourist economy. Strong competition on the marine carriers market forced them to seek out innovative products, and in the wake of that, their specialization, as well. At the same time, there has been a tendency to change a model of resting from passive lying in the Sun on aboard of the ships for an active participation in theme and profiled marine voyages. That caters to various customers’ needs and preferences. Owners of cruise vessels outdo each other in inventing the original theme offers for specific groups defined within: religious faiths, musical tastes, sport hobbies, health needs, or sexual orientation and many others. In both, polish and foreign literature, there is a noticeable lack, when it comes to a scientific approach to this phenomenon. In this light, it seems reasonable to take this topic of the research. The main aim of this article is an estimation of tenders in terms of theme cruises offered by marine carriers and making their generic classification. The research was realized using a method of desk research, a critical and comparative analysis of available literature, offers of marine tourist carriers, and also other scientific reports. Moreover, the author shows a list of criteria that could be implemented in the statistical researches of demand on theme cruises.

With firms searching for secured external funding by engaging in multiple bank relationships on the one hand and banks for profit maximization on the other hand, conflicts of interests may arise when firms’ banks demand access to corporate private information. This information can help banks to gauge the creditworthiness of borrowers, but also exposes the latter to losses of secrecy. Thus, firms which are dependant on informative secrecy – especially innovative firms – might incur difficulties when trying to get access to external funding. As rival firms prevail within firms’ own industries, a special focus is on effects of local industry specialization and competition when investigating the quantity of firms’ bank connections. Analysing German firm level and county specific industry data, I find evidence that the number of bank relationships decreases for the cross-section of firms with local industry diversification. The effects of the indicators of industry-specific and overall competition are twofold with the former being positively related to the probability of using multi-bank relationships and the latter negative. Concluding, firms located in industrially specialized areas might rather refrain from relationship lending, due to potential loss of external funding, while innovative firms seem to rely on transaction-based banking. Contrarily, firms located in areas that are diversified w.r.t. industries, firm sizes and corporate landscape engage in relationship banking.

Opis:
Zjawisko terytorializacji procesów rozwoju pokazuje proces zakorzenienia działalności gospodarczej w relacjach społecznych i przestrzennych. Jakie czynniki i uwarunkowania decydują o terytorializacji działalności gospodarczej i tworzeniu specyficzności w rozwoju? Artykuł ma charakter teoretyczny. Zastosowana metoda badawcza to krytyczna analiza literatury przedmiotu.
The phenomenon of territorialization of development processes shows the process of rooting of economic activity in social and spatial relationships. Territorialization leads to the creation of new values and resources, and the emergence of a specific, creative relationship system capable of rapidly adjusting to change. It enables evolution in development – from a simple concentration of economic activity through specialization to specificity in development. The aim of the article is to search, in a theoretical way, for the answers to the following questions: when a simple concentration and agglomeration of economic activity turns into a regional specialization? Which factors and conditions determine the territorialisation of economic activity and the emergence of specificity in development paths? The presented article is of theoretical nature, based on a method of critical analysis of literature.

Companies relocate in various manners. Some of them move by way of foreign direct investments, other relocate within their countries, regions or local areas of operation (e.g. when a company moves its seat to a different street). This paper focuses on the issue of relocating companies' seats. Data analysis (on NUTS2 level) indicates that migration of companies leads to an increased concentration of businesses in the Mazovia region, in particular in Warsaw. Additionally, it was demonstrated that in all of the Polish voivodeships the majority of companies that migrate do so within their regions. The weakest “magnet” for businesses are the voivodeships belonging to the least developed areas in Poland (Eastern Poland) and the Opole voivodeship, which undergoes a significant decline in population.

Opis:
Specialization in agriculture is one of the most important factors in the development of the agricultural sector in today's farming conditions. Focusing the farms on the production of a small group of products allows for their large, uniform batches of goods, desired by the market. Specialization in agriculture also allows better exploitation of machinery and equipment for agricultural production, and contributes to increasing the efficiency of production and the farm incomes.Agriculture is an important sector of the economy in Łódź voivodeship. Despite the very favorable natural conditions for agricultural production, Łódź voivodeship is typically agricultural. The agricultural nature of the area is mainly evidenced by the high (higher than the average in Poland) share of agricultural land in the total area of the voivodeship.Łódź voivodeship has a large share in domestic production of both livestock and plant. Łódź voivodeship specializes in the production of potatoes, which is the biggest producer in Poland, and also in the production of field vegetables, fruits, wheat and cereal mixtures. It is also a major nationwide producer of oats, triticale and sunflower seeds. It also plays an important role in the domestic livestock production. Łódź voivodeship specializes in the breeding of pigs, cattle and poultry. It ranks high among the voivodships in terms of density of livestock per 100 ha of agricultural land as well as in terms of production of livestock for slaughter, milk and eggs. Despite the worse than average in the country's natural conditions for the functioning of agriculture, Łódź voivodeship plays an important role in domestic agricultural production. Thanks to the high participation of several products in the creation of the Polish food base, it is one of the most important agricultural regions in the country.

This paper aims to review the evidence demonstrating the role of universities in the knowledge diffusion function for Smart Specialisation strategies. It is not new if many experts question whether Smart Specialisation will apply equally in all regions, plus the reason that the study of the role of universities in Smart Specialisation still needs much attention. Through this evidence-based literature review, I have identified three main points that support the role of universities for Smart Specialisation in less developed regions of Europe, including resources in regional innovation systems, public sector investment support for RandD, and strong bonds of the Triple Helix actors.

Education of community pharmacy workers is a very important part of everyday practice, especially in professional counselling (PC) which brings many health benefits for the patients. The aim of the study was to investigate if the community pharmacy specialization has an influence on the scope and quality of counsels given by pharmacy workers during PC scheme implementation in community pharmacies. The research was carried out between May and November 2017. After PC scheme implementation in community pharmacies, an anonymous questionnaire was administered to 245 pharmacy workers in Poznan and Warsaw (241 women, 4 men): 146 pharmacists (143 women, 3 men) and 99 pharmacy technicians (98 women, 1 man). In the conducted study, 14.7% of pharmacists had community pharmacy specialization (according to Polish law). Pharmacists with a community pharmacy specialization referred patients more often to physicians (p<0.0001), as well as after earlier physician consultation (p<0.0001). Furthermore, they often noticed the interaction between drugs in patients’ self-treatment and in the treatment ordered by a physician (p≤0.001). The indication of medication contraindications after a physician consultation was also significantly higher within pharmacists with specialization (p<0.0001). It can be noted that pharmacists with community pharmacy specialization were asked more often for self-treatment consultation and after physician visits (p<0.0001). Development of PC in Polish community pharmacy, especially among pharmacy owners well-educated in community pharmacy specialization, may help to increase safety of pharmacotherapy.

The aim of the study was to assess the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium balance and the percentage of green fields on arable lands in 30 organic farms of different production profile located in the Lubelskie, Podlaskie and Mazowieckie voivodeships. The studied farms were divided into three groups: as (a) specialized in crop/horticultural production, (b) specialized in animal production and (c) with no specific specialization. Each group consisted of 10 farms. In specialized farms, the dominant branch had at least 60% share in the total final gross production expressed in PLN. The surveys were carried out in the selected farms in 2010?2012 years. The studied farms were characterized by a positive nitrogen balance of 22.5 kg N ha-1 year-1. The phosphorus balance on an average was negative and amounted to -3.2 kg. It was the least negative in the animal group of farms, and the most negative in the crop/horticultural group of farms. The potassium balance was neutral and amounted to 0.4 kg K ha-1 year-1.Negative values were recorded only in the crop/horticultural farms. The share of green fields on arable lands on an average amounted to 32% what shows on the presence of desirable activities undertaken by organic farmers towards reducing nutrient losses. The nitrogen balance in the organic farms was over twice lower than in the conventional farms what indicates smaller risk of significant nitrogen losses from organic arable fields.

The paper provides also general thoughts regarding the specialization of courts and confronts them with the judiciary structure in CEE Member States in the context of private enforcement of competition law. While there is no uniform model of a judicial system, the paper provides a critical analysis of the centralization, specialization and decentralization of private enforcement models, taking into account also the importance of the training of judges. The relationship between NCAs and courts will be discussed whereby the role of NCAs in private enforcement defines the responsibility of the given public authority in private enforcement as a country’s policymaker.

The objective of the present paper is to classify Polish voivodships regarding specialization and competitiveness of crop production in the sectors of wheat, rye and oats. Crop production structure in the sectors grouped based on type of crop in the period of 2004-2014 was the subject of the analysis. The analysis was based on structural and geographical shift-share analysis which enabled a classification of Polish voivodships regarding crop production changes effects and also an assessment of crop production structures related to the reference space, i.e. regional area of the Polish voivodships. The performed research also allowed for the identification of crop production structures characterized by specialization and competitiveness in wheat, rye and oats.
W opracowaniu dokonano oceny tempa wzrostu wielkości zjawiska. Ponadto zidentyfikowano i oszacowano udział czynników strukturalnych, sektorowych oraz regionalnych (lokalnych, przestrzennych) w wielkości efektu globalnego (produkcji zbóż w Polsce ogółem) w przekroju województw. Dodatkowo włączono do badania aspekty przestrzenne (zależności międzyregionalne) w postaci macierzy wag przestrzennych, która umożliwiła włączenie do badania aspektów związanych z zachodzącymi zależnościami ponadregionalnymi.

Opis:
W części końcowej referatu dzielimy się refleksjami dotyczącymi perspektyw rozwoju studiów i badań polonistycznych w kontekście reformy struktury studiów filologicznych w Hiszpanii.
The process of closing the Polish specialization at the University of Barcelona began in 2013. As a consequence, the over thirty-year-long history of its existence at this university is coming to its end. The first Polish language courses were part of the elective teaching offer of the Slavic specialization; next they became a compulsory part of Slavic Philology, and in 2009 Polish specialization was created as part of a degree Modern Languages and Literatures. In their article, Agnieszka Mejnartowicz and Pau Freixa Terradas present the outstanding creators of the Barcelona center and the research fields they have developed within the framework of the literature and linguistic specialization. They discuss the current functioning of the center at the “new” philology department of the University of Barcelona, transformed in 2019 into the Faculty of Philology and Communication. In the final part of the article, they share their reflections on the perspectives for the development of Polish language and research programs in the context of the reform of the structure of philological studies in Spain.

Various economic theories indicate that many factors determine the competitive position of national economies. In addition to classical factors such as natural resources, technology, and capital (including human capital), other elements include openness and readiness to generate and implement innovation. An important role is played by institutional and legal systems, which provide economic liberty, free competition, and protection against monopolies, corruption, and crime. According to some research, an important role is also played by issues related to intellectual property (and more precisely, industrial property). The purpose of this article is to verify the importance of intellectual property on economic development. For this purpose, literary studies and patent research were primarily used, including an analysis of the relative specialization index (RSI). The analysis results indicated that the effect of IPP on GNP was not explicit and, depending on the starting position of an economy, and an increase in IPP outlays may have various effects. Another important finding is the extraordinarily dynamic growth of the Chinese economy, as measured by patent indices.

ITALIAN IMMIGRANTS
Opis:
The whole 20th century was characterized by the phenomenon of mass migrations from Europe to North America, but the literature on this issue has proposed different and conflicting explanations on their causes and features. In any case, whatever interpretative approach we want to support, some consequences of this phenomenon are clear. In particular, it is evident how the immigrants have strongly affected the urban economic environment by acting as either business actors or labor force at the local markets. In particular, the presence of communities of immigrants or minority groups has often originated the birth of economic ethnic niches and specializations. Historians usually describe ethnic job and business peculiarities by referring to different cause-and-effect analyses. The core of the debate is the different evaluations of the importance given either to the ethnic/cultural factors that feature the different immigrant groups or to the structural factors that define the host society and/or the global market. Consistent with the foregoing discussion, this article aims to compare the theoretical frameworks on ethnic economic niching discussed in the literature. Moreover, in order to test the theoretical achievements, it focuses on the paradigmatic case study of the Italian economic niches in North America.

The objective of the paper is to determine the size of human and objectified labour in selected specialist vegetable farms. The paper covered studies carried out in the area of southern Poland in 50 organic vegetable farms. Based on the detailed studies, the size and structure of work, and energy inputs used in the production process were determined. The highest inputs of labour per a unit of the production area and 1 tonne of a product were incurred in production of Cucurbita vegetables - 1883.1 and 547.74 man-hour, while the lowest of Solanacea vegetables - 342.8 and 7.11 man-hour. From among all analysed groups of plants, the highest energy inputs were incurred in cultivation of root and onion vegetables and they were three times higher than in traditional farms. Contrary, the lowest inputs were incurred in cultivation of brassica and Solanaceae vegetables.
Spośród wszystkich analizowanych grup roślin największe nakłady energetyczne ponoszono w uprawie warzyw korzeniowych i cebulowych i były one 3-krotnie wyższe niż w gospodarstwach konwencjonalnych. Najniższe natomiast nakłady odnotowano w uprawie warzyw kapustnych i psiankowatych.

The aim of the article was to study regional innovative development through the implementation of projects and programs of subregional smart specialization to strengthen consumption safety. To ensure the conceptual integrity of the study, such methods as theoretical generalization, comparison, dialectics, analysis and systematization, institutional analysis, statistical analysis and the smart specialization approach to innovative regional development were used. As a result of the conducted research, an inextricable relationship was established between consumption safety and regional innovative development. The state, problems and prospects of innovative development and smart specialization are studied on the example of Zaporizhzhya National University one with a number environmental problems and corresponding negative consequences for public health, has significant threats to consumption safety. It was found that the application of a sectoral approach to smart specialization will create conditions to position regional producers and products as resource- and environmentally friendly, which will strengthen competitiveness, increase enterprise income, reduce their environmental impact and raise the quality of life of the region. The importance of sectoral and subregional smart specialization (at the level of united territorial communities, urban areas, rural settlements) to strengthen consumption safety is substantiated.

This paper discusses the experiences resulting from EU’s adoption and implementation of a wide variety of policy measures in response to the COVID-19 crisis. These measures included stimulating the relocation and expansion of manufacturing to reduce vulnerability, depending on imports, ensuring the stability and development of industrial production. Using the example of the pharmaceutical industry in EU27 in the years 1995–2018, the study proposes and tests a new approach to assessing the consequences of relocation policies aimed at developing the local production potential, increasing the value added by activity, and expanding the share of local value added in industry exports. Specifically, the focus is on the formation of statistical analysis tools for assessing the changes of the specialisation and identifying the country's comparative advantages. The authors propose new indicators: RSP – coefficient of Revealed Specialisation of Production, CAVA – coefficient of Comparative Advantage in Value Added by Activity and EVA – coefficient of Comparative Advantages in the Domestic Value Added Exports. Additionally, formulas for their calculation are provided which allow the assessment of the position of Ukraine’s industries among a reference group, widening the ‘revealed comparative advantage’ concept. Finally, a test of the new methodology showed that it can be used to identify the comparative advantages of EU member states supported by state assistance programmes involving the implementation of business projects which aim to develop domestic production.

Why everyone is the Smith of their own happiness: The origin of one german proverbThe article looks into the etymology of the German proverb Jeder ist seines Glückes Schmied (Every man is the smith of his own happiness = Every man is the architect of his own fortune). The analysis of the proverb is linked to Keller’s “Der Schmied seines Glückes”, where the phraseological unit in question is applied to the author’s text in reverse order – from a vague concept to a concrete meaning – thus, acting as a means of text organization and revealing the idea that the protagonist found his happiness in making nails. The undertaken linguistic study is based on the etymologization of the nominal components, a comparative historical and structural semantic analysis of the proverb as well as phrases semantically related to it. The analysis brings to the surface the fact that the phraseological unit is motivated by its mythological background. Historically, the lexical unit Schmied (Smith) acquired a special meaning, whereas within the phraseological unit it actualizes the original idea of “creator, master”. It is through historical and etymological study that this semantic motive becomes obvious, thus explaining the ability of the word Schmied to coexist with the semantically related word Glück within one proverb.

This paper investigates the nature and pattern of export specialization in Lithuania. The aim of this paper is to estimate the nature and pattern of Lithuanian export specialization under the existing conditions. Seeking to define the nature and pattern of export specialization, the basic methods of export specialization measurement and the nature and pattern of export specialization in trade between Lithuania and the EU are determined. For measurement of the pattern of export specialization in Lithuania two approaches are adopted. The index of export specialization is used to determine the pattern of comparative advantage. Secondly, trade dissimilarity index is used to predict structural changes in Lithuanian exports. Using these methods of measurement and standard international trade classification (SITC), the nature and pattern of Lithuanian export specialization was determined. It was found that the biggest flows from Lithuania to the EU are in the following groups: food, drink and tobacco; raw materials; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials. These calculation results show the main directions of nature and pattern of export specialization. This research could be useful for preparing and forecasting the possibilities of Lithuanian export development.

This paper attempts to indicate changes in industry during the period of economic restructuring and European integration in Slovakia in the regional and sectoral contexts. The concepts of geographic concentration and regional specialization are used in order to achieve the envisaged aims. Based on the relationship between the change in the specialization index and the change in the number of companies in three size categories, the main aim is to show the strategies used in the transformation of the regional industrial structure. It is expected that the largest category of industrial companies, those with 250 or more employees, will be a significant factor in explaining the changes in regional specialization. The main output will be a graphic model of transformation strategies and the identification of regional industrial types.

The results of own research and literature data indi-cate that the specialization (different production profiles) offarms may contribute to specific threats to the natural environ-ment. Each type of farm exerts pressure on the environment toa greater or lesser extent, which was confirmed by agri-envi-ronmental indicators. Accordingly to literature data the greatestthreat to the environment (water pollution) pose pig farms due tothe high stocking density that contributes to unfavorable (exces-sive) balances of minerals and soil organic matter. Large posi-tive balances indicate the potential losses of these components, mainly due to their leaching to groundwater and surface waters, and consequently to their pollution (eutrophication). On the otherhand, farms with field crops had high risk of decrease in soil fer-tility due to negative balances of nutrients. The smallest threat tothe natural environment and soil fertility were observed for farmswith a mixed plant-animal production as well as cattle farmsspecializing in milk production (with optimal livestock densityof about 1 DJP ha-1). Under certain conditions, cattle farms mayhave too high balances of soil organic matter, and at the sametime negative balances of NPK minerals.

The aim of the article is to analyze the concept of innovation from Schumpeter's classic approach to modern times. Innovation is now recognized as a key factor in the development of enterprises. The author analyzes the notion of innovation as such, also pointing to its origins and basic types. These analyzes are carried out both historically and systematically. Some attempts are also made to point to the determinants of the accepted definition of innovation. Work is purely theoretical – it is an attempt at a specific ontology of the concept of innovation.

The subject of regional smart specialisations is an issue analysed in the context of economic growth, creating innovation and competitiveness, engaging countries and regions in the development of R&D investments in the field of in the European Union. The purpose of this article is to characterise the issue in relation to voivodeship smart specialisations in Poland and to verify the intensity of occurrence of the discussed issue. The following voivodeships analysed in detail where IT and communication (section J of the Polish Classification of Departments) were pointed as intelligent specialisation: Lower Silesia, Łódź, Lesser Poland, Subcarpathia, Silesia and Greater Poland. Using the Location Quotient and based on the values obtained from Section J, a comparison was conducted based on the level of employment intensity and investment outlays for the whole country. The analyses allowed to state that in the case of only two voivodeships: Lower Silesia and Lesser Poland, LQ for employment assumed values greater than unity, which proves high specialisation within the IT and communication section in these voivodeships. The LQ analysis for investment outlays for the surveyed voivodeships did not exceed unity, which proves lower investment outlays in the IT and communication section in the examined areas than the average for Poland. As in the case of LQ for employment, the Lower Silesia and Lesser Poland voivodeships obtained the highest results. The analysis enabled the verification as to whether the assigned regional smart specialisations are reflected in the level of employment and investment outlays.

Kluczowym procesem determinującym zmiany zachodzące w szeroko pojętych procesach produkcyjnych jest stale postępująca globalizacja, w jej wyniku firmy z krajów wysokorozwiniętych przenoszą najbardziej kosztochłonne fragmenty procesów produkcyjnych do krajów niskokosztowych. Wymienione procesy skutkują głębokimi zmianami w procesach produkcyjnych, podlegają one dekompozycji i fragmentaryzacji, w wyniku outsourcingu i offshoringu najbardziej kosztowne elementy procesu przynoszone są do krajów niskokosztowych.
