Objectives of the research: The goal of the research was to identify the type and extent of activities that special education facilities engage in to teach and promote independence in people with profound disorders of intellectual development. Research methods: Empirical material was collected using the author’s original online questionnaire, which consisted of 30 questions measuring the extent to which students’ needs for developing independent living skills are met. The survey was conducted among special education teachers (N=642) from seven European countries (Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey). A short description of the context of the issue: Independent living is widely seen as an immanent attribute of adulthood. Children and adolescents are prepared for independent living through the process of upbringing and socialization; people with disabilities are additionally prepared through rehabilitation. For people with a profound disorder of intellectual development, independent living is challenging but possible with the right support. Research findings: The results indicate that in the course of developing independent living skills in people with profound disorders of intellectual development, efforts are mainly made to improve their self-management skills and democratic management methods in both team work and individual work. Conclusions and recommendations: In the surveyed countries, there is a tendency to limit work for developing independent living skills to a single type of intervention. Rarely are two or three methods – not to mention four – simultaneously used to stimulate the development of independent living skills. It is therefore necessary to call for increased efforts to promote independent living among people with profound disorders of intellectual development and to focus this support on autonomy, self-determination, achieving quality of life goals, and, above all, the ability to make decisions – since this is what determines true independence in life.

Opis:
Until today, research about the education systems for students with intellectual disabilities has focused on how special education is organised for students who need specialist assistance. Available studies most often describe the education systems in the countries neighbouring Poland, in economically developed countries or in countries which have implemented innovative solutions unknown to other countries, into their educational policies. Poland draws from these types of solutions. It is impossible to describe, in one article, all the education systems for students with mild or severe intellectual disabilities in use around the world. The following two criteria for the selection of countries and their models or systems of education for students with intellectual disabilities were taken into account: (1) two largest countries with regards to population size and economic and financial development, namely the U.S. and China, referring to the educational system for students with intellectual disabilities in Poland; (2) significant differences but also similarities in special education systems and their services for students with intellectual disabilities in the U.S. and China in relation to Poland’s models of special education.

There is a great deal of concern in respect to the increase autism prevalence rates. Teachers are responsible for teaching students in their classrooms. However, research findings suggest that special education teachers are underprepared and express ‘low” to “moderate” levels of knowledge about autism. Analysis of several databases revealed no studies concerning levels of knowledge about autism among pre-service special education teachers. The presented study aimed at investigating pre-service special education teachers’ levels of knowledge about autism. A test was developed for the purpose of this study. Further, a sample of 56 pre-service special education teachers responded to the study test. Participants were enrolled in a training session of 12 hours, 4 times a week. The participants responded to pre- and posttest. Results indicated that the levels of knowledge among the study sample was within the “low” range. However, this shifted toward the “moderate” levels after finishing the training. Additionally, there were no differences between male and female participants and year level in respect to the levels of knowledge about autism either before or after receiving the training. The participants differ in the levels of knowledge on GPA rating in the pretest results, but not the posttest results.

Opis:
In this paper we present the systemic changes in education in Lithuania as well as the simultaneous movement towards inclusive education. Lithuania is following an international approach on inclusive education (UNECSO, 2008). The latter understanding prompted a shift of focus – from disorder towards human rights and needs. It is legally recognised, that children with special educational needs have a need for assistance and services in the education process that occurs due to being exceptionally gifted, having congenital or acquired disorders or disadvantages in their personal surroundings. The authors of the paper aimed to overview the systemic changes of the Lithuanian education system leading towards inclusive education. The research was based on systems theory taking into account two general approaches: 1) a cross-sectional approach – with a focus on the interactions that take place between two or more systems, and 2) a developmental approach – with a focus on the changes occurring in a system over time. Documentary review as well as meta-analysis have been employed as the methods of the exploratory study. The paper discloses that the systemic changes cover developments in educational policies and practices, including the financial and administrative framework, educational support through Pedagogical Psychological Services, and teacher training for inclusive education
W niniejszym artykule przedstawione zostały zmiany systemowe w strukturze edukacji na Litwie; prezentujemy również ruch na rzecz kształcenia integracyjnego. Litwa stosuje międzynarodowe podejście do kształcenia integracyjnego (UNECSO, 2008).

Inclusive education can be considered a modern approach to the both general and special education. For providing the best conditions of getting a proper education for every student irrespective of their social status, gender, colour of skin, state of health, etc. it is essential to provide professional environment, support and assistance at schools for those who need it as well as create healthy educational environment in the students’ group. The problem is accomplished by the fact that not all students with special educational needs are recommended or able to visit public schools because of the extent of their disease. Therefore the role of special education here shouldn’t be abolished. So, the article is aimed to analyse the world scientific approaches to special and inclusive education and make a comparative characteristics of the three types of schools: special school, school with integrated study and inclusive school.

Analiza przeprowadzona została w oparciu o akty prawne regulujące kształt – aspirującego do miana włączającego – polskiego systemu edukacyjnego.
The current world standard and aim of educational reform for people with special educational needs, as indicated by international organizations as UNESCO, is to enable them to take advantage of a high level of equality in local schools. The aim of the article is to highlight the differences between inclusive and integrated education which are often treated as synonyms, although the latter is closer to a form of segregation. This analysis was conducted on the base of laws regulating the structure of the Polish educational system.

Norway belongs to the group of countries, where the idea of inclusive education, that is one of important UNESCO and European Commision’s directions, is nearly fulfilled. Every child, whatever their special educational needs would be, has the right to attend a local school and to get there a proper help to reach their potential. Special pedagogy should serve the mainsteream schooling, which aim is to be as selfsufficient as it is possible when it comes to adapted educational forms and methods od teaching. Special education is the last option, when general ways of solvings the problem fail. The educational reform toward integration and inclusion of pupils with special eduacational needs was neither easy nor quick, so it is worth for other countries to use norwegian experiences in this field.

This article discusses the problem of Polish educational policy to foreign students in the context of special educational needs. Th is issue has a particular importance for the increasing number of migration fl ows in the world. Among those who have decided to leave their homeland are both economic migrants, who want to fi nd a well-paid job in order to improve their economic status and standard of living of their families, as well as refugees who want to fi nd a safe place to live. Education of migrants’ children in Poland is not only an educational but above all social problem. Th us, it is assumed that the theoretical framework of this issue will be the concept of social development environment by Uri Bronfenbrenner (1979). Furthermore, there is also an attempt to present the possibilities and limitations of the implementation of educational policy towards foreign students on the basis of the opinions of headmasters, teachers and pedagogues from the schools in which are children of immigrants.

The article discusses observations pertaining to one of the basic aims/objectives of education, namely: reception and analysis of a text read by students with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) at the 2nd stage of their education, as well as the form of abridgement of the text (based on the example of Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days) to suit the needs and capabilities of special-needs students. The conclusions presented herein result from pedagogical observations conducted during many years of a Polish-language teacher’s work focused on students with ASD in one of Warsaw’s elementary schools. They point to the necessity of individual facilitation of the entire process of reception, analysis, and interpretation of the text read in order to meet the needs and capabilities of a particular student-reader. Selection of suitable text and the abridgement thereof to the level of a child with developmental disorder classified as ASD, must take into account the preceding diagnosis and special educational needs mentioned in a psychological and pedagogical counselling centre’s medical opinion.

The goal of the study is to give the teachers’ perspective on challenges and rewards of inclusive education for students with special needs. Participants (N=50) were teachers of four mainstream schools involved in inclusive education through a model demonstration project. The data were collected through a written questionnaire and a focus group. The results show that the participating teachers believe in the message of inclusive education and have embraced it. The challenges are related to (a) lack of adequate professional preparation to work with students with special needs in general and in inclusive settings, in particular; (b) lack of administrative support such as reduced class size and teaching load; (c) lack of support by other professionals and special education teachers; and (d) lack of any supportive resources such as special equipment and modified didactic materials.

Dynamic of the society development is associated with extension of social problems, notably in educational context. The role of school, as the main public institution for social development of the students, is now obvious throughout the world. Consequently the role of social workers in schools is becoming essential, especially in terms of the inclusion of marginalized children from the opportunity of education, by impacting the educational system, to meet the diverse needs of all learners. Social work is focused on the welfare of individuals by increasing and developing their potential, so it goes hand in hand with inclusive education for children with disabilities, which emphasizes the children’ rights to obtain a definite, qualitative and suitable education in regular schools. The main focus of this study was to draw a clear panorama of the school social workers’ role towards the processes of inclusiveness of students with disabilities in Albanian regular schools. The data were collected via in-depth interviews with eight school social workers of the secondary schools in Korça region. The results showed that social service in schools is very important for helping students to develop social competences, intermediating parents in utilizing school and community resources, identifying and reporting bullying phenomenon, etc. School social workers could play a key role to implement the educational reform, which is being undertaken in Albania. Interviewees also shared their difficulties regarding the practical work, especially obstacles related to inclusive education processes.
