In her Nobel Prize speech, the first reporter who received this award, called herself “a human ear”. Swietlana Aleksijewicz’s statement inspired Katarzyna Michalak, a radio reportage artist, who, by carefully listening, noticed an experience shared by reporters who were explaining the world around them through various media. The author of this article, inspired by the meeting of two great reporters, decided to investigate how listening and acoustic space found expression in literary reportage. This article explores a research question concerning the functions of the sound sphere, and not only related to the protagonist’s voice, but also to his acoustic environment, present in the literary reportage. Therefore, the aim of this article will be to try to answer this question by analyzing the content of four Polish literary reports: Nie ma Mariusza Szczygła (2018), Błoto słodsze niż miód. Głosy komunistycznej Albanii Małgorzaty Rejmer (2018), Agonia. Lekarze i pacjenci w stanie krytycznym Pawła Kapusty (2018) oraz Lud. Z grenlandzkiej wyspy Ilony Wiśniewskiej (2018). The analysis of the presence of sounds in literary reportage leads to the formulation of the following conclusions. Exposing the acoustic sphere in the course of the narrative plays the role of mood-formation by building the background and scenography of the story, as well as the semantic sphere. It can be a significant element of the plot or to emphasize the most important events. It also creates the characterization of the main character and gives the reader access to his emotions. It is also a reporter's expression of empathy, an attempt to convey the hero’s voice without distortions and modifications, along with its melody, intonation and natural rhythm. It can be said that by including the last aspect, the attitude of Svetlana Aleksijewicz is reflected in the work of Polish reporters, although it is implemented in various forms.

This paper examines the past and future uses for acoustics in space research. Whilst on the larger scales in some topic areas, acoustical models have proved to be useful in extraterrestrial research, in other areas there has been not so much use made of acoustical techniques. One particular area where greater use might be made of acoustical sensors is in the deployment of acoustical sensors on probes sent out to other moons and planets. This is surprising given that acoustical sensors deliver benefits that are particularly useful for planetary probes, in terms of weight, bandwidth, ruggedness and cost. Whilst geoacoustical data could be obtained from many bodies, those which contain a dense atmosphere or an ocean offer intriguing additional possibilities. Examples from Mars, Venus, Titan, Enceladus and Europa will be discussed.

Opis:
The article reports three experiments conducted to determine whether musicians possess better ability of recognising the sources of natural sounds than non-musicians. The study was inspired by reports which indicate that musical training develops not only musical hearing, but also enhances various non-musical auditory capabilities. Recognition and detection thresholds were measured for recordings of environment al sounds presented in quiet (Experiment 1) and in the background of a noise masker (Experiment 2). The listener’s ability of sound source recognition was inferred from the recognition-detection threshold gap (RDTG) defined as the difference in signal level between the thresholds of sound recognition and sound detection. Contrary to what was expected from reports of enhanced auditory abilities of musicians, the RDTGs were not smaller for musicians than for non-musicians. In Experiment 3, detection thresholds were measured with an adaptive procedure comprising three interleaved stimulus tracks with different sounds. It was found that the threshold elevation caused by stimulus interleaving was similar for musicians and non-musicians. The lack of superiority of musicians over non-musicians in the auditory tasks Explorer in this study is explained in terms of a listening strategy known as casual listening mode, which is a basis for auditory orientation in the environment.

Absolute pitch is a unique feature of the auditory memory which makes it possible for its possessors to recognize the musical name (chroma) of a tone. Six musicians with absolute pitch, selected from a group of 250 music students as best scoring in musical pitch-naming tests, identified the chroma of residue pitch produced by harmonic complex tones with several lower partials removed (residual sounds). The data show that the percentage of correct chroma recognitions decreases as the lowest physically existent harmonic in the spectrum is moved higher. According to our underlying hypothesis the percentage of correct chroma recognitions corresponds to the pitch strength of the investigated tones. The present results are compared with pitch strength values derived in an experiment reported by Houtsma and Smurzynski (1990) for tones same as those used in this study but investigated with the use of a different method which consisted in identification of musical intervals between two successive tones. For sounds comprising only harmonics of very high order the new method yields a very low pitch recognition level of about 20% while identification of musical intervals remains stable at a level of about 60%.

Natural sounds are essential elements for ecosystems, and therefore necessary for many ecological functions, forming what is called “natural soundscapes”. The Natural Reserve Laguna del Portil (NRLP), located in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, is an ecosystem which was declared by Spanish authorities as Protected Natural Reserve. In the south area of the NRLP, there is a regional road with high traffic intensity, which affects the soundscapes of this natural reserve. In this study, the road potential noise impact on the natural sounds of the NLRP is analysed. This analysis was done both in winter and summer, and also using two independent methods: 1) spatial sampling measures in 43 different points of the NRL; and 2) noise mapping using noise levels prediction software. From the comparison of the results of both methods and seasons the following conclusions were reached: 1) an approach to the natural soundscape of NRLP both in winter and summer, 2) the acoustic impact of the road on the NRLP, and 3) the variation of the traffic noise depending on the distance to the road, and its seasonal variation. This study could be to improve the management of the NRLP and to help to preserve the natural soundscape of the reserve.

The paper demonstrates that blind people localize sounds more accurately than sighted people by using monaural and/or binaural cues. In the experiment, blind people participated in two tests; the first one took place in the laboratory and the second one in the real environment under different noise conditions. A simple click sound was employed and processed with non-individual head related transfer functions. The sounds were delivered by a system with a maximum azimuth of 32° to the left side and 32° to the right side of the participant’s head at a distance ranging from 0.3 m up to 5 m. The present paper describes the experimental methods and results of virtual sound localization by blind people through the use of a simple electronic travel aid based on an infrared laser pulse and the time of flight distance measurement principle. The lack of vision is often compensated by other perceptual abilities, such as the tactile or hearing ability. The results show that blind people easily perceive and localize binaural sounds and assimilate them with sounds from the environment.

The subject of discussion in the article is the way the protagonist of Vladimir Nabokov’s short story Sounds perceives the world. The sense-forming function of the sound as a literary trick, serv-ing to conceptualize the image of the world and the descriptions of emotional states of Nabokov’s characters, is revealed. It is proved that due to the recollective strategy (reconstructing in his mem-ory the day of parting with the beloved) the protagonist-artist perceives the ubiquitous harmony of sounds in the surrounding reality and at the same time recognizes (Gadamer) his own feelings that once bound him with his beloved. The “rhythmic order” of nature experienced by the protagonist evokes associations with Pythagorean reflection on the existence of permanent dependencies be-tween the rhythm of the Cosmos and the rhythms of man. This finds its expression in Nabokov’s short story in showing the intermingling of the worlds: establishing a relationship (unity) between the internal (emotional) and external (nature) world, between micro and macrocosm. The act of rec-ollection itself inscribes in a strategy of tranforming memories: forming in imagination a different image of the lovers’ parting and creating another – a dreamed image of the beloved.

Warsaw residents were asked in a survey about their sound impressions and requirements for the Warsaw soundscape. The aim of this research was to learn both the conditions of acoustic environment and the needs of space users in accordance with the space category. The present and expected sound structures of five different categories of space were examined (residential areas, streets, city centre, tourist areas and green areas). Information on both the specific Warsaw sounds and the ideas for new sounds (which could be introduced into the city) was collected.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: Lung auscultation is one of the basic physical examination tests both in the pre-hospital and hospital settings and should be performed on any patient who has problems with the respiratory system. Depending on the condition, clinicians can hear different breathing sounds. Our aim is to assess the effectiveness of lung auscultation on cadavers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted in October 2018, among 27 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) students at the University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Siedlce. The research tool used in this study was prepared human cadaver. Students listened to four pulmonary fields (apices and bases) using a stethoscope. RESULTS: The study included 27 students with an average age of 21.76 (SD ± 3.20). The average auscultation results were: right lung at the apex - 59.26% (SD ± 49.14), right lung at the base - 96.30% (SD ± 18.89), left lung at the apex - 40.74% (SD ± 49 , 14), left lung at the base - 77.78% (SD ± 41.57). The average satisfaction score on a scale from 1 to 5 was 4.37 points (SD ± 1.13). CONCLUSIONS: The study showed that conducting classes on mannequins is not sufficient for effective auscultation of pulmonary fields, which could probably be obtained through practice on cadavers. Students showed a high level of satisfaction with participation in the study. In order to improve the quality of students’ education and practical skills, periodic classes oncadavers should be conducted.

Opis:
After the outbreak of the Thirteen Years‘ War there was created a certain kind of the Pomesan chancellery landscape. Its creation resulted from the tendency of various chancelleries to cooperate. The central point of the landscape was Marienburg’s [Polish: Malbork] chancellery of the Grand Master under the supervision of the clergyman and chancellor Andreas Santberg. He organized the manner of administering the written documentation with the help of public notaries, who had prepared the earliest files. The personal relations between the city chancelleries of the Monastic State and the Teutonic chancelleries may be noticed. The situation of the work of the chancellery during the Thirteen Years’ War was determined by extraordinary conditions. Preparing the registers of documents in the chancellery of the Grand Master was stopped. Instead of this, the number of drafts of documents increased. In the cities and towns which were most affected by the war events, it was hard to maintain the continuity in the production of documents. After the Grand Master moved to Königsberg, the preparations to set up a new registry office of the territorial ruler commenced. The chancellery’s personnel organized the administration of the documentations according to old models of the Sambian chancellery. One of the characteristic features of the German writing used during the war was the introduction of double sounds „nn” in the initial syllable and sometimes in the final syllable. After the conclusion of the Peace Treaty the process of the gradual secularization of the Grand Master’s chancellery could be observed. In the times of Friedrich von Sachsen educated lawyers were responsible for chancelleries following the models taken over from the Meissen motherland of the Grand Master. Under the rule of the margrave Albrecht people from Francophonie became trustworthy cooperators. They led to the gradual francisation of the language of the chancellery. Writing registers again became part of chancellery production. A new administration was created. Similar phenomena took place in case of writing production of the city chancelleries and other lay and church chancelleries at the end of the Teutonic period, which requires further research.

Research on relations between art and politics has its tradition. However, it mainly refers to literature, whose part, as far as its authors’ intentions are concerned, is of a political character, in a lesser degree – of a picture. Sound, especially if it is not linked to a text and/or a picture, is considerably more seldom analyzed from the point of view of its importance in politics. As long as a word and a picture happen to convey unequivocal political meaning, qualified as such by most recipients, sound cannot be obviously considered a political message. It is questionable whether music can convey any meaning in whatever sense. If one can manage to suppress this doubt, it will result in a question how to construe the senses conveyed through the medium of melodic – rhythmic structures. However, the findings in the field of widely understood humanities affirm that music serves as a creator’s message directed to both individual and collective receivers. Political science studies often bring up a matter of communication between authorities and the subjects (in authoritarian regimes), and also between representatives of a nation or people claiming their role and electorate (in democratic regimes). At the end of the 1960s, American and Canadian scientists made room for music, one of the most widespread communicators, i. a. in political sphere. At that time, interdisciplinary teams including American sociologists, political scientists, culture and media experts undertook.

The present study was carried out to determine whether recorded musical tones played at various pitches on a clarinet, a flute, an oboe, and a trumpet are perceived as being equal in loudness when presented to listeners at the same A-weighted level. This psychophysical investigation showed systematic effects of both instrument type and pitch that could be related to spectral properties of the sounds under consideration. Level adjustments that were needed to equalize loudness well exceeded typical values of JNDs for signal level, thus confirming the insufficiency of A-weighting as a loudness predictor for musical sounds. Consequently, the use of elaborate computational prediction is stressed, in view of the necessity for thorough investigation of factors affecting the perception of loudness of musical sounds.

Opis:
Together with Sciarrino and Casale, Incardona and Damiani are the most important composers trained at Palermo University’s Musicological Institute. Federico Incardona (Palermo, 1958-2006) reconciles the social commitment of Berg and the political tension of Nono with the sublimated eroticism of Szymanowski. If Nono’s works, like those of Evangelisti in a different way, blend dodecaphonic dialectic with the corporeity of the sound of Varèse, Incardona blends Evangelisti’s sonorous cosmogony with the erotic immediateness of Bussotti. But his principal reference point is Mahler. His music is rich in meaning and strong emotional intensity, concentrated and sublimated: it is like “processes of denuding of the melody, carnal embraces between the parts, dodecaphonic series modelled on the body of the loved one” (Spagnolo). Its “new linearity and temporal tension”, is wedded to the “absolute primacy of expression and emotion”, in full awareness of the “deep unity of emotion and knowledge” (Lombardi Vallauri). Indeed, in the intense expressionism of his music, dodecaphonic construction is always at the service of a dialectical discourse which is dense and deep, but - in his last works - clear and fluid like a melody by Bellini. “Infinite melos”, Marc Crescimanno defines it: harmonic richness and dense hétérophonie complexities are blended; the counterpoint is based “on the superimposition of manifold variations on the same figure, with precise control of the vertical encounters on its melodic-harmonic hinges”. Born into a dynasty of engineers and architects, Giovanni Damiani (Palermo, 1966) is himself an engineer and architect, but in sound space. Rather than music, his works are organized Sound: “embodiment of the intelligence inherent in sounds themselves”, in the manner of Varèse, and specifically “sound vegetation”, in the manner of Bartok. His most important work, Salve follie precise (1998-2004: on a libretto in verse by Francesco Carapezza, based on Semmelweis et l’infection puerpérale that Louis-Ferdinand Céline wrote between 1924 and 1929), represents precisely the germination of life (of algae from water, of grass from rock, of man from woman, of sounds from Sound) and the threats of death that surround it, that is to say of regression of the animal and vegetable kingdoms to the mineral kingdom. In it Damiani exclusively uses, as previously in the great symphony Matrice/Organon (1995), natural harmonic sounds. We thus assist at harmonic germination; Sound generates sounds, the Note generates notes. If Damiani as a musicologist follows on from Réti, as a composer he follows on from Schenker. For him the note, seen as pure Sound internally structured a priori, is everything: the universe of artistic creation in sound space is only unfolding of the tension internal to the note itself. Everything (melody, tonality, polyphony, harmony), as Cesare Brandi wrote, “comes from the very nature of the note, which is, in the stratification of harmonics, tonic, isolated note (of a melody), vertical chord and horizontal encounter of polyphonic lines”.

Opis:
Word-formational productivity of onomatopoeic interjections imitating machine sounds in SloveneThe article presents partial results of a wider study about the lexical potential of interjections in Slovene from the functional and lexicographical perspectives. The study focuses on interjections imitating machine sounds which are presented as entries from a to ž in the Slovenian Ortography (2001).On the basis of examples found, interjections were classified into more homogenous groups according to the type of machine. Each category was further analyzed by using corpus analysis, which was carried out on the trial version of the billion-word corpus of the Slovene language called Gigafida. The analysis focused on the existence of words created from interjections whose base comes from one of the subcategories of onomatopoeic interjections presented here. The results of the analysis have confirmed that this type of interjections and words formed from them are relatively frequent in expressive discourse. The most prominent are the interjections typically used for imitating the sound of musical instruments and their parts (brenk), tools (švrk, škrt), weapons (pok, švist) and transportation devices (puh). The results also showed that the interjections which are the base for forming verbs give rise to more extensive word families. Verbs formed from interjections can also form complex words of a higher order according to established word-formational patterns.

The paper discusses articulatory diversity of the /r/ sound in present-day German. Both consonantal and vocalic values of the rhotic are discussed. The choice between the consonantal and the vocalic forms is motivated by distribution. The most common consonantal forms are the uvular trill and the uvular fricative. However, their pronunciation is idiophonic.

The paper addresses a problem of modelling lung sounds. Apart from typical human breath of a healthy person, the model of asthma wheeze, one of the most often breathing disorders, is presented. Since wheezes are embedded in normal human breath, the methodology of signal-to noise (wheeze-to-breath) ratio calculation is discussed in the paper. The frequency range of wheezes present in real recordings is investigated in this work, too. Section 2 specifies signals that are obtained during the chest auscultation. In Section 3 feature identification and signal modelling of normal lung sounds are made. In this section the distribution of signal samples and the mean signal spectrum are shown in the figures. Section 4 describes identification of real signal features and modelling of wheezes. This section presents histograms of SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio or Wheeze-to-Breath Ratio), number of tones in wheezes and tone frequencies for real signals and generated tonalities. The model verification results obtained with use of tonality detection algorithms are given in Section 6. The short conclusions and a list of references are at the end of the paper.

The paper examines and compares the realization of the rhotic consonant /r/ in fake and genuine Polish-accented English. The former variety is represented by the speech of several actors of different nationalities featuring in the 2017 American film The Zookeeper’s Wife, the latter is analysed on the basis of speech samples provided by 25 teenage Polish learners of English. We focus on the rhoticity vs nonrhoticity of the examined accents and the phonetic realizations of /r/ in order to draw conclusions concerning the authenticity of Polish English pronunciation in American films.

A silent language: imagining the dialect in Ferrante’s novels – Elena Ferrante’s novels are not examples of plurilingual literature; in fact they do not mix diatopic varieties of Italian and dialect, even if, above all in the stories in My Brilliant Friend, Italian readers can perceive the sounds of the Neapolitan dialect. To achieve this effect, Elena Ferrante uses metalinguistic glosses, which alert the reader when the characters pass from one language to another. The essay examines the features of the glosses, which are cleverly inserted, do not hinder reading, and manage to transport the reader to among the houses and the sounds of Naples.

Opis:
This paper investigates the impact of bilingualism on the difficulties of pronunciation for both L1 (Arabic) and L2 (English). It assesses the production of stop sounds in Arabic and English through an acoustic analysis of stops' closure duration (henceforth CD), as pronounced by Arabic-English bilinguals whose L1 is Palestinian Arabic. Additionally, the paper aims to highlight the difficulties of pronunciation in both languages. Three groups of same aged adult subjects participated in the production tests; 1) Arabic-English bilinguals whose L1 is Palestinian Arabic, 2) Arabic-monolinguals, and 3) English-monolinguals. The stops in word-medial and final positions were included in closed syllables (CVC) in meaningful words inserted in carrier sentences. The results revealed that the CD of the interaction of stops was represented in four categories; 1) unidirectional effect of L1 on L2 that caused a foreign accent, 2) bidirectional influence resulting in L1-L2 interference, 3) unidirectional impact of L2 on L1, and 4) nativelikeness in both languages without language interference. In addition, the findings showed that bilinguals faced pronunciation challenges in both similar and dissimilar sounds. This paper is expected to initiate more comprehensive studies in the field of interaction between Arabic and English in the Arabic context.

Linguists can reconstruct a conceptualization of senses in Adam Mickiewicz’s writings on the basis of the writer’s language dictionary. Lexicon characterizing each sense were arranged in semantic categories connected with one another, which construct a frame semantic. The writer was susceptible to each of senses but most often he referred to sight and hearing. Mickiewicz used a complete variety of words specific to his epoch. Adam Mickiewicz didn’t form new words in the studied range of vocabulary.

Opis:
The Speech Learning Model states that the process of equivalence classification reduces the accuracy of a similar L2 sound by forming an L1-L2 merged category whereas new sounds tend to be pronounced with greater accuracy due to lack of perceptual linkage with an L1 category (Flege 1995). We found further support for this differentiation in the production of the canonical schwa as a new sound by L1 Polish/L2 English speakers and as a similar sound by L1 Romanian/L2 English speakers, who produced an L1-L2 schwa merger. The aim of the current paper is to further investigate the production accuracy of new and similar sounds. First of all, a control group that consisted of native Romanian speakers was used to analyse the L1-L2 similar sound merger. Secondly, a measure of overall pronunciation ability based on foreign accent ratings (FAR) was included. The results confirm that production accuracy for new sounds is much greater than for similar sounds which form merged diaphones with the equivalent L1 sound. As a result, neither sound is produced on target when compared to a native speaker reference. Moreover, new sound production accuracy benefits much more from an increase in general proficiency and overall L2 pronunciation ability.
