Opis:
The main aim of the work described in this paper was to design and validate measures to reduce noise levels in a training center. This training center serves for the practical training of students with the focus in the shaping and machining engineering products. Reduction of noise in the training center was mainly due to the clarity and hearing of the spoken word between the lecturer and students, as well as to reduce the risk of hearing damage. In order to reduce noise levels, it was proposed to overlap the training center with a roof structure filled with sound absorbing material in two solutions. The noise absorption coefficient of the selected material was determined on the impedance tube. For verification of effectiveness, measurements of equivalent A sound levels were made before and after realization noise reduction measures. Reduction of equivalent A sound pressure levels after the noise reduction measures are between 15.5 dB and 17.5 dB depending on the measuring point and the operating mode. The effectiveness of the implemented measures reaches a good level, as noise was reduced to the recommended legislative level.

Opis:
The audiosphere is a capacious, ambiguous category, often freely used in contextual research. It is a term that has long been present in literary studies, but is used quite freely. The aim of this article will be an in-depth look at the ways of using the word 'audiosphere' and, finally, an attempt to specify research meanings useful in the context of literary studies. The terminology that organizes the sound order of a language exists in the study of literature in two modes. Each mode represents a different path in the development of the field of meanings of the audiosphere category. The first of them was developed by literary researchers as early as the 1980s, where the audiosphere was identified with the audial medium of presenting a literary text, i.e. with singing, recitation or speech. The second mode was subordinated to contemporary influences of cultural anthropology. The creation of sound studies and the so-called sound anthropology resulted in a flood of new meanings of the word 'sound', as well as the need to develop cognitively useful descriptive categories. In this context, the audiosphere is a very Polish term. It is mainly used by Polish researchers, strictly distinguishing it from the soundscape category, which is more common in Western studies. In the article, the two models outlined above will be confronted with each other, and the purpose of this juxtaposition will be to cause shifts in terms of meanings. On the basis of a relatively outlined definition, the basic features of the audiosphere within literary research will be listed. This will make it possible to clarify which specific features of this category are useful in the context of literary studies and which should be rejected. Ultimately, it is about working out the possibility of creating a model of audial interpretation of a poetic text.

The author of this study suggests an idea that the auditive element of digital games is soon going to be one of the most important factors influencing their overall success, popularity, and originality. He analyses the phenomenon of binaural and ambisonic sound, its evolution and uses in the context of modern audio-visual work, primarily focusing on games. The auditive component and its increasingly important role are analyzed in connection with the graphic design of games, virtual reality, as well as the popularity of specific games. This paper also focuses on audio-games, the use of binaural sound (which was first used on a large scale in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice) and various hybrid digital games, which are balancing between classic games and audio-games. Argumentation is based on an assumption that binaural sound is the way to ambisonic sound, which (within the context of the immersive and interactive character of digital games) predestines the new standard and shows an entirely new way of creating and using digital games at the same time. All of this is reflected in the context of the graphic design of digital games and their future.

The paper presents the verification of a solution to the narrow sound frequency range problem of flat reflective panels. The analytical, numerical and experimental studies concerned flat panels, panels with curved edges and also semicircular elements. There were compared the characteristics of sound reflected from the studied elements in order to verify which panel will provide effective sound reflection and also scattering in the required band of higher frequencies, i.e. above the upper limit frequency. Based on the conducted analyzes, it was found that among some presented solutions to narrow sound frequency range problem, the array composed of panels with curved edges is the most preferred one. Nevertheless, its reflection characteristic does not meet all of the requirements, therefore, it is necessary to search for another solution of canopy which is effective over a wide frequency range.

The article presents a critical approach to the sound studies debate, concerning its metatheoretical aspects. The point of departure is a paper by Brian Kane that opens the first issue of “Sound Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal”. Kane criticizes the ontoaesthetic perspective within the discipline. My aim is to introduce sound studies both as an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary field of humanities, dominated by two — instead of one referred by Kane — research strategies: audio-antropological and onto-aesthetical. By focusing on the latter, where the works by Christoph Cox and Salomé Voegelin are situated, I want to propose a different, affective-materialistic approach to sound studies, based not on the opposition between signification and sound/vibration, but on the relationship between the Deleuzoguattarian machinic concepts and the musical avant-garde. Referring to excerpts from articles and manifestos by Luigi Russolo, Edgar Varèse, Pierre Schaeffer and Pauline Oliveros, I show that the machinic sound imagination once accompanied the historical avantgarde and neo-avant-garde movements. It is the key to break with the anti-post-structural approach in sound studies in favor of a more relational perspective. This perspective, within the onesthetic paradigm, would allow for the interpretation of sound machinery as elements of the machine system (aesthetic, social, cultural) in which sound operates.

Opis:
The scattering and transmission of sound by an elastic spherical shell is considered when it is subject to an incoming monochromatic planar wave. It is aimed to cancel the sound scattering using combinations of multi-pole sources located at the centre of a shell filled with compressible fluid. Assuming linear acoustics and structural dynamics, exact solutions are derived for total elimination of the sound scattering for three cases: a free-space, near a hard ground or near a free-surface, where in the last two cases it is assumed that the incoming wave propagates normal to the interface to maximize sound reflection back unto the source of the incoming wave. An elastic spherical shell of 1 m radius embedded in water and filled with air or oil is analysed to show the dominance of low-mode numbers for frequencies of less than 10 kHz and thus demonstrate the ability of this approach to damp acoustic scattering by means of low-order multi-poles inside the shell. Contour and mode distribution plots are also given and analysed.

A sound reception is one of important human perceptions and a contact with the surrounded world. Now computer devices are the main equipment to almost perfectly record and playback a wide range of sounds. Music or sound cards play the central role in this process. The Author has tested several cards concentrating the attention specially on their external versions but internal versions were also investigated for comparison. Usually specially constructed external sound cards are better than much compromised internal versions built directly other electronic circuits on the computer mainboard. It was proved during experiments measuring noise parameters – not always. A simplicity of the construction and other digital circuits closeness create difficult conditions for a noiseless action but in a popular class equipment only. Three external cards, one of PCI interfaces E-MU - 0404 for studio recording and two of USB interface, potentially worse designed by Creative Labs - Sound Blaster Connect and by Lexicon - Alpha. All Hi-Fidelity requirements are performed by each card but noise levels are different. Conclusions are shortly presented here: 1. Built-in sound cards, specialized for Hi-Fi recording are better with noise parameters than external USB devices 2. The newer built-in card (Dell Studio laptop) is only a little bit worse than special professional card by Creative Professional (E-MU 0404) 3. USB cards include additional preamps (very useful) but present in noise charts ad-ditional interferences (peaks) and its noises are a few dB bigger 4. Newer USB cards (Lexicon Alpha) are much better than older (Sound Blaster Connect). The noise difference is up to 10 dB (abt. 3 times) Results are clearly shown using tables, charts and mathematical formulas derived from own experiments.

This essey presents the experience and reflection of a cultural insitution on the values of soundscape and methods of making contemporary people more sensitive to it. The aim of the text is to share this experience with scholars and scientists in order to work together on the quality of sonic environment more effectively. The author criticizes the most popular and simplest methods of measuring noise by electronic instruments and reducing it by physical separation of citizens from its sources because they do not reduce noise emission and introduce additional barriers into urban landscape. From the prespective of the Forum for Space Culture (one of the Centre's activities) better methods of fighting annoying souds consist in better city planning and valuating soundscape in relation to its significance in local context. The second part of the essey presents the development of sensitivity to soundscape in the Centre. The first source of interest in this medium was theatre as the kind art in which sound plays a unique role and requires thorough treatment. The second source was the Grodzka Gate whose history lead the founders of the Centre to exploring the local past by recording Oral History. The combination of these two inspirations lead to a series of projects and public events such: publishment of a CD with Oral History about Lublin Jews, sonic environments of exhibitions, hearings of radio reportages and "myteries" – open space events offering participants to experience sounds connected with local cultural heritage. A unique project broadening sensitivity to soundscape is a project The Invisible Map of Wrocław (printed in Polish, German and English) presented by its author Maciej Buczyński during the meeting of the Forum for Space Culture at the conference. It is a guide to Wrocław, created by people who have never seen the city in which they live. The idea behind this project was to visit and document places which have a special meaning to blind people in order to get closer to them and learn how they perceive the world. The resulting catalogue of 31 places portrayed through photography, description and sounds.

This paper explores the place for sound within social theory, more specifically, how sound as a subject can be interpreted methodologically. The paper examines the various methods implemented within a Ph.D. research project. The research adopted a participatory approach, examining the missing voices in the post design of place. In this way, the research focused on those groups often excluded in the design of urban space, teenagers. The methods included participant documented soundwalking, sound mapping, focus groups, and ethnographic soundwalks. This paper argues that a closer attention to sound, when examining the urban area, will help shape one’s understanding of the everyday. Methods that explore sound as part of the makeup of social life, either as place building or space making, whether they are politically intentional or historically relevant, need to be advanced.

For the purpose of reducing the impact noise transmission across floating floors in residential buildings, two main sound transmission paths in the floating floor structure are considered: the stud path and the cavity path. The sound transmission of each path is analysed separately: the sound transmission through the cavity and the stud are predicted by statistical energy analysis (SEA). Then, the sound insulation prediction model of the floating floor is established. There is reasonable agreement between the theoretical prediction and measurement, and the results show that a resilient layer with low stiffness can attenuate the sound bridge effect, resulting in higher impact noise insulation. Then, the influences of the floor covering, the resilient layer and the floor plate on the impact sound insulation are investigated to achieve the optimised structure of the floating floor based on the sound insulation.

The article seeks to establish a foundational framework for comprehending crucial definitions and concepts related to auditory space in digital gaming, particularly focusing on audio games designed for visually impaired individuals (VI), often devoid of graphical interfaces. While existing studies often emphasize players’ interactions with interfaces and the acquisition of real-life skills, this text explores audio games through the lens of entertainment and immersion. Numerous studies indicate a demand among visually impaired players for more intricate and challenging games, incorporating elements usually used in standard digital gaming experiences. By combining definitions from both audio and traditional digital games, this article broadens the scope of sound design considerations, encompassing various aspects and classifications. It presents several auditory dimensions, consolidating them into a comprehensive dimension called attenuation, putting their roles within a game’s context. The author is a sound designer currently working on an audio game; therefore, many of the presented definitions are also a guide that will represent some of his own considerations while working on this game. These include not only the use of binaural or ambisonic sound but also understanding the ways and means of how to work with (3D) space in the context of audio and its possible functions.

This paper discusses the concept of the reverberation radius, also known as critical distance, in rooms with non-uniformly distributed sound absorption. The reverberation radius is the distance from a sound source at which the direct sound level equals the reflected sound level. The currently used formulas to calculate the reverberation radius have been derived by the classic theories of Sabine or Eyring. However, these theories are only valid in perfectly diffused sound fields; thus, only when the energy density is constant throughout a room. Nevertheless, the generally used formulas for the reverberation radius have been used in any circumstance. Starting from theories for determining the reverberation time in non-diffuse sound fields, this paper firstly proposes a new formula to calculate the reverberation radius in rooms with non-uniformly distributed sound absorption. Then, a comparison between the classic formulas and the new one is performed in some rectangular rooms with non-uniformly distributed sound absorption. Finally, this paper introduces a new interpretation of the reverberation radius in non-diffuse sound fields. According to this interpretation, the time corresponding to the sound to travel a reverberation radius should be assumed as the lower limit of integration of the diffuse sound energy.

Concatenative Sound Synthesis
Opis:
Sound synthesizers are a natural element of a musician’s toolset. In music arrangement, samplers can often produce satisfactory results, but it requires a combination of manual and automatic methods that may be arduous at times. Concatenative Sound Synthesis reproduces many of natural performance- and expression-related nuances but at a cost of high demand for processing power. Here, another method of musical phrase synthesis aimed at music arrangement is presented that addresses these and other related issues. Contrary to common practice, we propose to record and utilize sound samples containing not one, but short sequences of pitches. In effect, natural pitch transitions are preserved and phrases appear to be much smoother, despite using very limited set of performance rules. The proof-of-concept implementation of the proposed method is discussed in detail along with attempts at optimizing the final sound effects, based on auditory tests. The limitations and future applications of the synthesizer are also discussed.

Noise propagation within ducts is of practical concern in many areas of industrial processes where a fluid has to be transported in piping systems. The paper presents experimental data and visualization of flow in the vicinity of an abrupt change in cross-section of a circular duct and on obstacles inside where the acoustic wave generates nonlinear separated flow and vortex fields. For noise produced by flow wave of low Mach number, laminar and turbulent flows are studied us- ing experimental sound intensity (SI) and laser particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique adopted to acoustics (A-PIV). The emphasis is put on the development and application of these methods for better understanding of noise generation inside the acoustic ducts with different cross-sections. The intensity distribution inside duct is produced by the action of the sum of modal pressures on the sum of modal particle velocities. However, acoustic field is extremely complicated because pressures in non-propagating (cut-off) modes cooperate with particle velocities in propagating modes, and vice versa. The discrete frequency sound is strongly influenced by the transmission of higher order modes in the duct. By under- standing the mechanism of energy in the sound channels and pipes we can find the best solution to noise abatement technology. In the paper, numerous methods of visualization illustrate the vortex flow as an acoustic velocity or sound intensity stream which can be presented graphically. Diffraction and scattering phenomena occurring inside and around the open-end of the acoustic duct are shown.

A system setup for measurements of acoustic field, together with the results of 3D visualisations of acoustic energy flow are presented in the paper. Spatial sampling of the field is performed by a Cartesian robot. Automatization of the measurement process is achieved with the use of a specialized control system. The method is based on measuring the sound pressure (scalar) and particle velocity(vector) quantities. The aim of the system is to collect data with a high precision and repeatability. The system is employed for measurements of acoustic energy flow in the proximity of an artificial head in an anechoic chamber. In the measurement setup an algorithm for generation of the probe movement path is included. The algorithm finds the optimum path of the robot movement, taking into account a given 3D object shape present in the measurement space. The results are presented for two cases, first without any obstacle and the other - with an artificial head in the sound field.

Opis:
Urethane foam mattresses are commonly used as cushioning when placing panel flooring on the floor slab of a building. Urethane foam consists of elastic fibres with pores. Both elements can affect the performance of the insulation against impact sounds. However, these effects have not yet been detailed, and they may change if the material properties or constitution of the fibres and pores in the cushioning change. In this paper, we propose an analytical model for use in evaluating the performance of insulation against floor impact sound. This model was used to examine the contribution of the pores versus the elastic fibres to wave transmissions from the flooring surface to the slab. The results reveal that the constitution of the foam (either open or closed cells of pores) and the thickness and hardness of the cushion layer strongly affect the sound insulation performance of the floor.

Opis:
In contemporary literature the research, which was most often carried out, was devoted to the visual attractiveness of the landscape due to its significant role (Ulrich, 1977)in influencing the tourist recreation activity within the landscape (Kowalczyk, 1992). However, the issue of sound is rarely studied, compared to wide research devoted to physical aspects of the sound, such as the amplitude, or the psychosociological problems connected with sound. The esthetic and communicative qualities of sound are rather neglected. In geographical, foreign literature (e.g. Porterous et al., 1985) one can come across the notion of “soundscape” which was introduced by Schafer (1976). His notion highlights how wide the information hidden in sounds can be. The audio landscape is an individual feature of every region; it is a part of the so-called “genius loci”. The changes in elements of the audio landscape are an important indicator of landscape transformation (Bernat, 2001). The research method was based on the evaluation of different types of landscape by respondents who listened to different sounds. The respondents were shown slides with different types of landscape with sounds played in the background. The sounds included birds songs(sound I) and humen-generated sounds(sound II). The research methods used by the author have shown a significant role of the natural and human-generated sounds as well as their spatial and ecological influence on the natural environment in which the sound is produced. The results of the research have proved that the evaluation of the visual landscape depends on the sound influence. Therefore, the interaction between sound and evaluation, seen as important aspects of the landscape, should be perceived as a unity. In this way full data about the environment can be collected.

This prohibition results directly from the law and does not require a separate interpretation, e.g. in the form of an administrative decision. However, its application in practice can be troublesome due to interpretation difficulties caused by the fact that the terms used in the regulation are not directly defined by the applicable law. The author discusses the subjective and objective scope of the prohibition, pointing to examples of judicial decisions, and indicating the consequences of its violation.

The rigorous solution describing the sound radiation by an arbitrary surface source located at the bottom of a cylindrical open cavity embedded in a flat baffle has been obtained. The open cavities of different shapes can be found in some architectural structures as well as are components of sensors, musical instruments and vehicles. The presented formulas have been expressed in the form of Infinite sums. To use them, the infinite sums have to be truncated to the finite number of terms. Therefore, in practice, the results obtain based on the proposed solution are not exact and their accuracy is determined by the truncation error. The use of presented formulas is an alternative method for the finite element method (FEM). However, taking into account that the calculation efficiency of FEM rapidly decrease when a volume of considered region increases, the obtained in this study solution can be more useful in some practical cases. The approximated formula of a high computational efficiency has been presented for the sound pressure in the far field. The sound radiation has been analyzed for a rectangular piston as a sound source. The influence of cavity depth ratio on the radiation efficiency has been investigated. The cases for which the cavity radiation efficiency can be approximately calculated from the formula valid for a baffled sound source have been determined.

The sound is the subject of interest for many various scientific disciplines, i.e. acoustics, cultural anthropology, landscape architecture, ethnology, aesthetics, geography, medicine, musicology, psychology, sociology, and urban planning. Researches and using of sound and music in various aspects have become more popular lately. In many countries there are undertaken studies of soundscape, and despite of their fast development they encounter some difficulties, which are the consequence of interdisciplinary character. The aim of the paper is presenting exemplary research approaches in studies of sound in the landscape at the point of view of geographer or representative of complex discipline concerning the nature and also culture. In the cultural and urban studies there are some sociological methods: semantic differential, mental map, questionnaire, and interviews (oral history). In the landscape ecology studies landscape preferences are analyzed, and estimation of perceptivebehavioral values is prepared. This estimation method points out some preferences and attractiveness of landscape for people, and it can be readable as richness of feelings and diversity of stimuli, for example sound ones. Special attention should be paid on holistic methods, connected with landscape researches within landscape character assessment with identification of special landscape features, and description of type and conditions of introduced changes and investment development. Sound effects landscape, it forms landscape character.

In this paper, the outline of an experimental platform for sound synthesis and sound processing is presented. The main idea of a reconfigurable synthesizer is to integrate different blocks and functions typically present in several devices. Most important design assumptions are hardware FPGA plug-ins, flexible configuration of analog inputs, sophisticated graphical user interface. One of the goals of this system is to build a system for testing synthesis and sound effects algorithms. Hardware FPGA “inserts” allow easy replacement of the processing method on the hardware level. Configurable input analog modules provide a flexible way for adjusting external channels on demand. A distributed, intelligent graphical user interface makes adjusting the parameters of sound by several performers at the same time possible. Such a feature is very useful especially by live performances. Another important part of the proposed solution is communication between the system modules and external devices. Besides a separate MIDI interface intended for data transfer including notes and control information, the wired and wireless standards for MIDI over Ethernet, digital sound, control data etc. are necessary. Selected aspects regarding implementation of a part of the reconfigurable synthesizer, including simple waveform synthesis and envelope modifier, are presented in the paper. Standard development boards were used as a test environment. The implemented blocks are the basis for future development of the system.

The paper presents the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in predicting sound insulation through multi-layered sandwich gypsum partition panels. The objective of the work is to develop an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to estimate the Rw and STC value of sandwich gypsum constructions. The experimental results reported by National Research Council, Canada for Gypsum board walls (Halliwell et al., 1998) were utilized to develop the model. A multilayer feed-forward approach comprising of 13 input parameters was developed for predicting the Rw and STC value of sandwich gypsum constructions. The Levenberg-Marquardt optimization technique has been used to update the weights in back-propagation algorithm. The presented approach could be very useful for design and optimization of acoustic performance of new sandwich partition panels providing higher sound insulation. The developed ANN model shows a prediction error of ± 3 dB or points with a confidence level higher than 95%.

Good rehearsal facilities for musicians are essential. Directive 2003/10/EC necessitates that musicians are protected from noise exposure. A code of conduct gives the guidelines how this should be done. This study examines room acoustics recommendations provided by the Finnish code of conduct, and discusses whether they are adequate. Small teaching facilities were measured after renovation and compared to earlier measurements. Teachers’ opinions were inquired about the facilities before and after. The renovation did not decrease the noise exposure of the teachers. However, the majority preferred the facilities after the renovation. The Finnish code of conduct is not sufficient for facilities where loud instruments are played, or band practise. Good facilities can be designed but they must be specified at the designing stage for their intended use.

Sound art is a term used to classify works which incorporate sound as the main artistic means of communication with the audience. If we look at the presence of sound in art from a historical viewpoint, our attention can be drawn by Cabaret Voltaire and the performances of Dadaist on its stage. Sound became also an element of performances, and constituted an integral part of many of them. However, it only accompanied the artworks and was not an independent object of art. The text focuses on materiality which is an integral part of Sergei Tcherepin’s sound artworks. In his artworks, a material object and sound constitute a specific unity.

Opis:
The theoretical estimation of sound absorption coefficient of a surface may give very different results. This will depend on the type of sound field assumed in the theoretical model used for the estimation of its sound absorption coefficient. Absorption coefficients for normal and diffuse sound fields are widely known, although they may be far from the absorption values given by an absorbing material when it is finally installed inside a room or enclosed space, where a sound field closer to a spherical wavefront is more likely to be found. This work presents a theoretical study, which is addressed at obtaining a mathematical expression to calculate the sound absorption coefficient for a variable range of incidence angles, called αs. The presented method uses a circular sound field incidence as an approximation to a spherical incidence. The estimation of this coefficient αs is based on obtaining the incident and reflected sound fields for a surface located facing a lineal source. The advantage of this calculation method over others lies on its capability to give results for circular, normal and random wave incidence depending on the range of incidence angles considered in the calculation.

In this study, the modified Sauer cavitation model and Kirchhoff-Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (K-FWH) acoustic model were adopted to numerically simulate the unsteady cavitation flow field and the noise of a three-dimensional NACA66 hydrofoil at a constant cavitation number. The aim of the study is to conduct and analyze the noise performance of a hydrofoil and also determine the characteristics of the sound pressure spectrum, sound power spectrum, and noise changes at different monitoring points. The noise change, sound pressure spectrum, and power spectrum characteristics were estimated at different monitoring points, such as the suction side, pressure side, and tail of the hydrofoil. The noise characteristics and change law of the NACA66 hydrofoil under a constant cavitation number are presented. The results show that hydrofoil cavitation takes on a certain degree of pulsation and periodicity. Under the condition of a constant cavitation number, as the attack angle increases, the cavitation area of the hydrofoil becomes longer and thicker, and the initial position of cavitation moves forward. When the inflow velocity increases, the cavitation noise and the cavitation area change more drastically and have a superposition tendency toward the downstream. The novelty is that the study presents important calculations and analyses regarding the noise performance of a hydrofoil, characteristics of the sound pressure spectrum, and sound power spectrum and noise changes at different monitoring points. The article may be useful for specialists in the field of engineering and physics.

Opis:
Main aim of this study is to combine the characteristics of the sonic crystal (SC) with acoustic panels and porous materials to improve the sound transmission loss (STL) through the triple-panel structure. SCs cause a bandgap centered around a certain frequency (Bragg’s frequency) due to generation of destructive interference. Initially, an analytical method is developed that extends the previous theory of double-panel structure to predict STL through a triple-panel structure. Finite element (FE) simulations are performer to obtain the STL through the triple-panel, which are validated with the analytical predictions. Various configurations are analyzed using the FE method based on the method of inserting the porous material and SCs between the panels to address the combined effect. STL through the triple-panel structure is compared with that through the double-panel structure having the same total weight and total thickness. It is found that the combined structure of the triple panel and the SC with glass wool as filler gives the best soundproof performance for the same external dimensions. For narrow air gaps, filing with glass wool is more advantageous than inserting one row of SC. In addition, the triple panel combined with a SC has better soundproofing than the two-panel counterparts.

In this paper the acoustical analysis of the spindle Bering of a radial drilling machine was performed using SLM, by measuring the sound pressure level of the bearing in decibels, for different frequencies, while muting all the other noises. Then using an experimental set up, two database readings were taken, one for new bearing and the other for completely damaged bearing, both are SKF6207, which itself is the spindle bearing. From these three sets of sound pressure level readings, the period of usage of the spindle bearing, was calculated using an interpolation equation, by substituting the life of the bearing from the manufacturer’s catalogue. Therefore, for any machine with a SKF6207 bearing, its usage time can be estimated using the database readings and one measurement on that machine, all with the same speed.

Opis:
This paper deals with the problem of the effect of discretization level and certain other parameters characterizing the measurement setup on accuracy of the process of determination of the sound radiation efficiency by means of the Discrete Calculation Method (DCM) described by Hashimoto (2001). The idea behind DCM consists in virtual division of an examined sound radiating structure into rectangular elements each of which is further assumed to contribute to the total radiation effect in the same way as a rigid circular piston having the surface area equal to this of the corresponding virtual element and vibrating in an infinite rigid baffle. The advantage of the method over conventional sound radiation efficiency measurement techniques consists in the fact that instead of acoustic pressure values, source (plate) vibration velocity amplitude values are measured in a selected number of regularly distributed points. In many cases, this allows to determine the sound radiation efficiency with sufficient accuracy, especially for the low frequency regime. The key part of the paper is an analysis of the effect of discretization level (i.e. the choice of the number of points at which vibration amplitude measurements are to be taken with the use of accelerometers) on results obtained with the use of the method and their accuracy. The problem of determining an optimum level of discretization for given excitation frequency range is a very important issue as the labor intensity (time-consuming aspect) of the method is one of its main flaws. As far as the technical aspect of the method is concerned, two different geometrical configurations of the measurement setup were tested.

In this study, an effective optimization approach was proposed to improve acoustical behaviors of PU foams. The important parameters of PU foams: content of water, silicone oil and catalyst A1 were chosen and their effects on sound absorption coefficient and transmission loss of PU foams were studied by using Taguchi methods. In addition, bamboo chips were incorporated into PU foams as fillers to improve the acoustical properties of PU foams. Four controlled factors: the content of water, silicone oil, catalyst A1 and bamboo chips with three levels for each factor were chosen and Taguchi method based on orthogonal array L9 (34) was employed to conduct the experiments. Based on the results of Taguchi’s orthogonal array L9 (34), signal-to noise (S/N) analysis was used and developed to determine an optimal formulation of PU-bamboo-chips foam composites.

Head Related Transfer Functions
Opis:
The individual Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) typically show large left-right ear differences. This work evaluates HRTF left-right differences by means of the rms measure called the Root Mean Square Difference (RMSD). The RMSD was calculated for HRTFs measured with the participation of a group of 15 subjects in our laboratory, for the HRTFs taken from the LISTEN database and for the acoustic manikin. The results showed that the RMSD varies in relation to the frequency and as expected is small for more symmetrical HRTFs at low frequencies (0.3÷1 kHz). For higher frequency bands (1÷5 kHz and above 5 kHz), the left-right differences are higher as an effect of the complex filtering caused by anatomical shape of the head and the pinnae. Results obtained for the subjects and for data taken from the LISTEN database were similar, whereas different for the acoustic manikin. This means that measurements with the use of the manikin cannot be considered as perfect average representation of the results obtained or people. The method and results of this study may be useful in assessing the symmetry of the HRTFs, and further analysis and improvement of how to considered the HRTFs individualization and personalization algorithms.

Efficient ultrasonic noise reduction by using enclosures requires the knowledge of absorbing properties of materials in the frequency range above 4 kHz. However, standardized methods enable determination of absorption coefficients of materials in the frequency range up to 4 kHz. For this reason, it is proposed to carry out measurements of the sound absorption properties of materials in the free field by means of a tone-burst technique in the frequency range from 4 kHz to 40 kHz at angles of incidence varying from 0° to 60°. The absorption coefficient of a material is calculated from the reflection coefficient obtained by reflecting a tone-burst from both a perfectly reflecting panel and a combination of this panel and the sample of the tested material. The tests results show that mineral wool and polyurethane open-cell foam possess very good absorbing properties in this frequency range.

The survey interviewed three hundred and nine people in five public places within Warsaw. The aim of the survey was to examine if people's sound preferences are related to a place's function and how these preferences diferentiate. A further aim of this research was to gather users' ideas for making city soundscapes more pleasant. The results showed that people generally prefer natural and human sounds, but do not like mechanical sounds; the importance of specific sounds are diferentiated in relation to the function and history of a place. The main way to make urban places sound better and more appropriate to their function is to eliminate or reduce mechanical sounds (especially trafic), but individual methods depend on local conditions. The second way to make places sound better is to increase natural sounds and to make soundscapes more appropriate to their function - an increase in human sounds (mainly music).

Opis:

The main aim of this paper is typology, valorization and mapping of soundscapes. Identification of sounds in landscape and mapping them can be very useful and practical for tourism, especially for ecotourism. For this reason the map “Attractiveness of landscape units for ecotourism” by S. Kulczyk and W. Lewandowski (2006) was used us a background. The research field was located at Polish uplands, within Niecka Nidziańska Region. Three types of landscape are represented these – the valley bottom landscape of Nida Valley, the loessy landscape within Garb Wodzisławski and chalk-gypsum landscape in Niecka Solecka. The project included two stages. In the first stage the map with potential sounds and their “borders” for each landscape units was done. In the second stage the final verification of this map with students during the summer practice in 2008 was conducted. They were asked to identify sounds in the area and to map them. The results of the project confirmed that sound is a very important part of landscape and it should be taken into account by estimating the value of landscape for ecotourism. Some not attractive units on the map “Attractiveness of landscape units for ecotourism” appeared us an attractive because of their sounds (for instance agriculture fields). Some attractive fields lost their value because of noise from gypsum-mine or the road. Natural and artificial sounds were recognized within the research area. For agriculture landscape of Ponidzie the most characteristic sound is skylark (Alauda arvensis) song. Sounds smoothly change in time and space. Borders delimitated on the basis of visual changes do not exist for them. For this purpose it would be better to speak about sound in landscape than about soundscapes. This kind of research should be continuing by interdisciplinary team including ornithologists.

The paper presents the experimental research associated with the spatial distribution of acoustic energy generated by moving ship into the water. The paper present the methodology of evaluations acoustics energy from the mechanisms of ship into the water environment. For that purpose the research of noise spatial distribution over ship's hull were conducted along with the hydroacoustic field. The hull is source of waves of complex surface shape inducing waves of different amplitudes and phases depending on the position of ship's machinery. As a result of the hull vibrations generated wave distribution depending on the primary sources, as the main propulsion units, generators or other mechanisms. This research allowed to determine position of the main noises' sources of acoustics energy of machinery and propulsion system depending on class of ships and to designate spatial distribution of noise generated by hull of moving ship.

The paper presents the inverse method to estimate the sound power level of machines operated in industrial environments. Values of the partial sound power sources of machine components could be predicted based on the distribution of sound field parameters measured around the machine. Assigning partial sound power levels of machine components allows for the effective selection of efficient noise protection solutions for this machine. Measurements were carried out in an actual mechanical workshop. The multichannel measurement system for simultaneous recording of sound pressure levels and the angle of phase angle shift was used in measurements. Based on the determined the sound power of partial sources, the A-weighted sound pressure levels at the operator's workplace were determined.

Von den Cultural Studies bis zu den Visual Studies (Bielefeld 2012), a propaedeutic and synthetic book edited by Stephan Moebius, contains a chapter on sound studies, which was written by Holger Schulze. Arguing that no model of a homogeneous science of sound can be maintained, Schulze advocates studies that retain processuality, performativity, heterogeneity and hybridity of the cognitive process. Subsequently, when he was presenting the development of sound studies, he was able to take into account the experiences of the musical avantgarde, the development of theoretical research on sound, and various practical consequences and transformations of ethnomusicology. Schulze devoted the most attention to what it meant, means and will mean to study the world of sound, i.e. the world of sounds and the sounding world.

The analysis of available literature indicates that tests of products sound quality, which would not involve participation of groups of listeners supposed to evaluate the sounds emitted by these products, are neither carried out in Poland, nor in the world. That results in the fact that the products sound quality is determined on the basis of psychoacoustic information and comprises both objective and subjective factors of sound perception. With reference to those factors and to different life cycles of the machine, an original definition of the “sound quality of the machine” has been developed and presented in this article. The global index of the acoustic quality of the machine, accounting for the relations between the noise level at the workstation and the selected parameters characterising both the machine’s sound activity and the working environment, was adopted as the measure of the sound quality of the machine. The experiments that followed confirmed the appropriateness of the assessment made with the use of the global index of acoustic quality.

It is known that sound field produces longitudinal oscillation motion of medium. If there are floating particles in a medium those particles oscillate together with liquid. In this paper we consider dynamics of floating particles, which have rotational oscillations in acoustic field. This novel phenomena produces additional sound attenuation due to viscous damping. In the present paper this effect is analytically described. The expression for sound attenuation in suspensions of such particles and estimations of the value of the effect are obtained, and possible applications are discussed.

The article comprises an analysis of the results of survey research, which were carried out in selected countries belonging to the moderate area, and concerning preferences of sounds emitted in geographical space and perceived by its inhabitants. All respondents perceived the sounds which were elements of nature as nice, except for unknown sounds and the ones associated with danger. Unpleasant feelings resulted from the sounds made by mechanical devices and dangerous natural phenomena. Very loud conversations and shouts are also unpleasant for people. Preferences of sound signals in geographical space are conditioned by the natural environment, culture and indirectly by political systems.

The study exclusively analyzes the ambient noise data acquired for 25 locations in commercial zone, 12 in industrial, 16 in residential and 17 in silence zones. The analysis of (Lday – Lnight) for 70 locations under observations reveals that 10 dB night time adjustment in day-night average sound level descriptor is not appropriate in such a scenario and as such it is recommended to use day-night average sound level and day-eveningnight average sound level descriptors without any 10 dB night time adjustment or 5 dB evening time adjustments. The analysis and conclusions of the present study shall be very useful for developing single value noise descriptor correlating the noise annoyance and health effects in Indian perspectives.
