Opis:
The environment is considered an ideal machine, a system in which nothing happens without reason. Every transformation, action and stimulus has consequences that are not always immediately plain to see. It is because the environment is like communicating vessels, or a complex organism, in which everything is interdependent, and the organs work together. Despite the processes’ complexity and intricate yet logical correlations between the elements, it is not a perfect system. Examples are weather anomalies and, in extreme cases, cataclysms. The problem arises when man interferes with the environment. By polluting almost every possible place, he initiates irreversible changes, degrading the environment. This paper presents an analysis of atmospheric air pollution in the town of Supraśl, surface water from the Supraśl river, and soil samples from a selected area.

The aim of the study was to assess the impact of technosols and geomechanically unchanged soils of the Lublin agglomeration on the concentrations of arsenic and phosphorus, and on selected forms of these elements. Arsenic and phosphorus concentrations were determined in the urban soils of Lublin (Poland), and the relationship between their degree of contamination and different types of land use was estimated. The samples collected were subjected to sequential analysis, using ammonium sulphate, acid ammonium phosphate, oxalate buffer (also with ascorbic acid) and aqua regia for arsenic, and ammonium chloride, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and aqua regia for phosphorus. The influence of the land use forms was observed in the study. The greatest amount of arsenic (19.62 mg kg-1) was found in the industrial soils of Lublin, while the greatest amount of phosphorus (580.4 mg kg-1) was observed in non-anthropogenic soils (mainly due to the natural accumulation processes of this element). Fractions of arsenic and phosphorus obtained during analysis showed strong differentiation. Amorphic and crystalline fractions of arsenic, bound with iron oxides, proved to have the highest share in the total arsenic pool. The same situation was noted for phosphorus.

Fires in natural ecosystems have a detrimental effect on all biota components. In the global scale, many scientific studies of prominent scientists are devoted to this topic. It should be noted that scientists have always been interested in the influence of thermal destruction of soil genetic horizons on the specific activity of radionuclides. Most of these studies began after the Chernobyl (1986) and Fukushima (2011) radiation disasters. The conducted research is focused on the specific activity of radionuclides due to the thermal effects of fires in natural ecosystems. It has been established that the edaphotopes affected by fires are naturally restored causing the restoration of soil formation processes. The specific activity of radionuclides decreases with the duration of the ground fire. Comparing the obtained data with the regulatory documentation, it was found that they do not exceed the minimum significant activity of radionuclides in the workplace. However, the increased activity of radionuclides in soils has a detrimental effect on the ecological condition and flora and fauna development. During the fire season in natural ecosystems and forests, careless handling of fire should be avoided and preventive measures should be taken to inform the public about the harmful effects of wildfire.

Opis:
Contamination of soil with heavy metals has become a worldwide environmental problem, and receives great attention. In this study, we aim to investigate soil pollution level affected by an industrial district nearby. The total amount of typical heavy metals in the soils (Hengyang Songmu Industrial Park, Hunan Province, China) was analyzed. In addition, the fraction analysis and laboratory simulation leaching via different pH rainwater was carried out to study the migration and transformation of heavy metals. The main results show that the contents of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd in the samples were higher than the soil background values in Hunan Province. The heavy metals forms, analyzed by sequential extraction method, show that the proportion of the unstable form of Cd, Zn and Pb was more than 50%. Igeo values indicate that the heavy metal pollution degree of soil sample #5 at the investigated area is recorded in the order of Cd(6.42), Zn(2.28), Cu(1.82), Pb(1.63), and Cr(0.37). Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd in this area could pose a potential leaching risk to the environment which may affect the food chain and constitute a threat to human health. It would be necessary to take steps to stabilize and monitor the heavy metals in soil.

Opis:
A laboratory experiment has been performed to determine the effect of soil pollution with the herbicides: Harpun 500 SC, Faworyt 300 SL, Akord 180 OF and Mocarz 75 WG on the course of ammonification. The soil material for the experiment consisted of loamy sand of pH 6.5. The experiment comprised five replications. Soil samples in particular objects were polluted with the herbicides at rates corresponding to the dose recommended by the manufacturer: 0 – control, 1 – a dose recommended by the producer, and the rates 50-, 100-, 150- and 200-fold higher than the recommended dose. Next, nitrogen was introduced to soil in the form of L-aspartic acid, DL-alanine, L-arginine and urea in the amounts of 0 and 300 mg N kg-1 soil. Having been thoroughly mixed with the additional substances, the soil was brought to moisture equal 60% capillary water capacity and incubated for 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours at 25oC. The study has demonstrated that the course of ammonification depended on the type and rate of a herbicide added to soil, type of an organic compound undergoing ammonification and duration of the trial. L-arginine was ammonified most rapidly, while ammonification of L-aspartic acid lasted the longest. Among the tested herbicides, the strongest inhibitory effect on ammonification process was produced by Mocarz 75 WG, which continued to exert negative influence on mineralisation of organic substances for 36 hours. The other preparations did not have such a considerable effect on the quantities of ammonified nitrogen.
W doświadczeniu laboratoryjnym określono wpływ zanieczyszczenia gleby herbicydami: Harpun 500 SC, Faworyt 300 SL, Akord 180 OF i Mocarz 75 WG na przebieg procesu amonifikacji. Następnie do gleby wprowadzono azot w postaci kwasu L-asparaginowego, DL-alaniny, L-argininy i mocznika w ilości 0 i 300 mg N⋅kg-1 gleby.

Opis:
Heavy metals are an urgent environmental problem, since their high concentrations have a negative impact on soil chemistry. Solid domestic waste landfills are a direct source of heavy metals accumulation in soils. Landfills pollute and poison large areas around them. Heavy metals are concentrated in the surface layer of the soil 0–10 cm deep, and can later migrate into plants and further into living organisms. The article examines soil pollution by the total content of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn) in the areas adjacent to Tbilisi and Telavi (Georgia) landfills and on illegal landfill in the village of Anaga (Sighnaghi municipality). The results show that the soil cover of the territories adjacent to solid domestic waste landfills and illegal landfills is contaminated with heavy metals. The data obtained confirm the migration of heavy metals mainly in terms of the distance from the landfills. High concentrations of heavy metals in soils are characteristic of lead and cadmium. There is also a tendency towards a decrease in the content of lead, cadmium, copper, zinc with distance from the landfill of solid domestic waste.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of soil contamination with herbicides on the course of the nitrification process. The experiment was carried out in nine replications, on typical brown soil developed from loamy sand with pH 6.5, hydrolytic acidity of 8.25 mmol(+) kg-1, total exchangeable alkaline cations of 78 mmol(+) kg-1 and organic carbon content of 6.3 g kg-1. The experimental variables were: type of herbicide (Harpun 500 SC, Faworyt 300 SL, Akord 180 OF and Mocarz 75 WG), herbicide application dose expressed as a multiple of the dose recommended by the manufacturer (O - control, l - dose recommended by the manufacturer, and doses 50, 100, 150 and 200 higher than recommended by the manufacturer), dose of nitrogen in the form of (NH4)2SO4 (O and 300 mg N kg-1 soil) and soil incubation time (14, 28, 42, 56 and 70 days). Soil samples weighing 50 g were incubated in a thermostat at a temperature of 25 °C throughout the experiment. Soil moisture content was maintained constant at 60 % capillary water capacity. The study showed that the nitrification process was affected by the type and dose of the applied herbicide as well as the time of the analysis. Lower levels of nitrified nitrogen were observed in soil contaminated with Harpun 500 SC, Akord 180 OF and Mocarz 75 WG herbicides, while Faworyt 300 SL increased the rate of nitrification. The inhibitory effect of the tested herbicides was significantly minimized over time.
Zmniejszenie ilości znitryfikowanego azotu odnotowano w glebie zanieczyszczonej herbicydami: Harpun 500 SC, Akord 180 OF i Mocarz 75 WG, natomiast Faworyt 300 SL spowodował zwiększenie tempa nitryfikacji. Wraz z upływem czasu trwania doświadczenia inhibicyjny wpływ testowanych preparatów istotnie ulegał zmniejszeniu.

Opis:
The aim of the paper was to identify the influence of magnesium on the preservation of pathogenic abilities of entomopathogenic nematodes living in soil contaminated with oil derivatives. Entomopathogenic nematodes living under natural conditions in soil or applied to soil as biopreparations for plant pest control are sensitive to soil contamination with heavy metals and oil derivatives. These nematodes do not respond directly by higher mortality but by a decrease in their pathogenic abilities, which adversely affects the success in searching and eliminating pests. A Polish commercial preparation called Owinema SC, containing infective juveniles of Steinernema feltiae Filipjev (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae), was used to test the effect of oil derivatives on pathogenicity and reproduction of entomopathogenic nematodes. Soil was polluted with petrol, diesel oil and used engine oil; the control was soil unpolluted with oil derivatives. Magnesium sulphate was also added (MgSO4∙H2O) in the amount of 160 mg per 1 liter of the suspension. The three oil derivatives in concentrations of: 0.3, 0.6 and 1.0 g or in double doses, i.e. 0.6, 1.2 and 2.0 g were poured over weighted soil batches. The control remained intact. Three replications of each treatment were made. Subsequently, Tenebrio molitor L. larvae used as bait inesct were placed in containers with the suspension. The bait insects were kept in the containers for 7 days, and afterwards they were removed from the soil and taken from the traps in order to check their mortality rate. Furthermore, to test the reproduction ability of entomopathogenic nematodes, dead larvae were moved to “islands” previously prepared according to the Dutky method. The results were presented as the number of entomopathogenic nematodes per 1 dead larvae of Tenebrio molitor L.
Owinema S.C. – polski preparat komercyjny zawierający larwy inwazyjne Steinernema feltiae (Rhabditis, Steinernematidae) – używano w testach laboratoryjnych nad oddziaływaniem zanieczyszczenia ropopochodnymi na patogeniczność i reprodukcje owadobójczych nicieni. Glebę zanieczyszczono benzyną, olejem i olejem silnikowym. Dodano siarczan magnezu (MgSO4 H2O) w dawce 160 mg l-1 zawiesiny.

The investigations aimed at an assessment of representatives of Arionidae sensitivity to soil pollution with oil derivatives from the perspective of their use as bioindicators. The laboratory experiment, conducted in 3 replications, comprised the following objects: soil contaminated with unleaded petrol; soil contaminated with diesel oil; soil contaminated with used engine oil; control. Doses of 3,000 mg and 10,000 mg of oil derivative per 1 kg soil d.m. were applied. Petrol revealed the most toxic effect on the tested invertebrates among all three applied pollutants. Slugs revealed the greatest sensitivity only to soil contamination with petrol dose of 10,000 mg · kg–1 soil d.m., which evidences their considerable resistance to soil contamination with oil derivatives.
Doświadczenie laboratoryjne przeprowadzono w 3 powtórzeniach i obejmowało ono następujące obiekty: gleba skażona benzyną bezołowiową, gleba skażona olejem napędowym, gleba skażona przepracowanym olejem silnikowym, kontrola.

Opis:
Changes in the magnetic susceptibility of topsoil, especially in urban areas, are greatly affected by the deposition of anthropogenic metallic dust arising from industrial activities, the burning of fossil fuels, car wear, and tyre abrasion. In this study, magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out in vertical soil profiles of 30.0 cm depth from the surface at 10.0 cm intervals in about 431 locations within the Abuja metropolis with a view to investigate the penetration ability of magnetic pollutants in the ground. From the obtained data, 3-D surface contour maps were plotted for different depths. The results show a magnetic susceptibility decrease from the surface down the ground to the depth of 30.0cm; most of the recorded susceptibilities were of an anthropogenic origin rather than pedogenic activities. This indicates that the anthropogenic dust depositions are mostly a surface phenomenon and may therefore not pose a risk to groundwater aquifers and near surface wells.

Various additives, including cement, quicklime, fly ash, montmorillonite, sepiolite and their proportions were employed to stabilize/solidify artificially prepared soils contaminated simultaneously with two kinds of ions such as Cd2+ and Pb2+. The unconfined compressive strength of the stabilized soils was measured to estimate the possibility of recycling. The efficiency of Cd2+ and Pb2+ immobilization in contaminated soils was also evaluated using the US EPA TCLP toxicity test. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for the immobilization of heavy metals. The experimental results demonstrate that in terms of soils simultaneously polluted with Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions, the curing effect of fly ash is better than that of montmorillonite and sepiolite. When Cd2+ and Pb2+ coexist in soil specimens, the curing is more difficult than for Cd2+ or Pb2+ alone, which is antagonistic mechanism. Also, the leaching concentration of Cd2+ and Pb2+ gradually decreases upon increasing pH when pH < 8. For pH ≥ 8, the leaching concentration of Cd2+ and Pb2+ reached a minimum. Besides, the results of XRD and SEM are in agreement with those of the strength and leaching tests.

Opis:
Soil contamination is a significant factor in the general degradation of the environment. Remedial intervention on contaminated soils may be carried out bymeans of specific and different technologies, including chemical, physical and biological methodologies. Of these, the latter are the least invasive and bioremediation intervention can be carried out both in situ and ex situ. The object of this study was a clay soil highly contaminated by heavy hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The soil was subjected to remediation treatment using a bioremediation technique, applied by inoculating a nutritive and enzymatic-bacterial mixture. A qualitative-quantitative microbial characterization of the soil matrix was undertaken, both before, and thirty days after, the treatment. The percentage abatement in hydrocarbon concentration and the overallmicrobial concentration present in the soil were measured, and the eco-toxicological impact was estimated. The eco-toxicological aspect was assessed by applying the ostracod test and the phytotoxicity test. The microbial component was estimated by the Direct Count method on plates: this method highlighted the vital countable cells of telluric and degrader mesophilic bacteria, of the Pseudomonadaceae, of the actinomycetes and total mycetes (moulds and yeasts). This study was focused on evaluating biological remedial technology combining chemical analysis with microbiological assessment and bioassays, because chemical analysis alone cannot provide a full picture of the bioremediation process and its effectiveness. The data obtained indicated that the bioremediation technique applied gave optimal results in terms of percentage abatement of the hydrocarbon concentration, microbial enrichment of the soil matrix and reduction of toxicity found in the soil before the clean-up treatment.
