Opis:
This research was conducted to evaluate the effects of biochar and barley residues on some physicochemical properties of silty loam soil and water erosion using water erosion sim- ulator. Biochar was produced from pistachio shells under slow pyrolysis at 500°C under anaer- obic condition. Biochar and barley residues were mixed to soils at three rates of 0, 0.5 and 1% (by weight), and 6.5 kg of soil was filled in trays with length, wide and height of 35 × 20 × 10 cm, respectively. The experiments were performed in 3 repetitions for 4 months as a completely randomized design. The results showed that application of 1% of biochar significantly increased P (phosphorus), K (potassium) and OC (organic carbon) of the soil in comparison with control. Also, application at both levels (0.5 and 1%) of barley residues significantly increased P, K, TN (total nitrogen), and OC. Application of biochar and barley residues significantly increased the mean weight diameter of aggregates, plant available water content, and saturated moisture content and significantly decreased water dispersible clay (p < 0.05). Consequently, the amount of water erosion decreased at the rainfall intensity of 60 mm·h-1 during 20 minutes. Generally, the effect of barley residues to improve soil properties was higher than the biochar.

Opis:
Gamma-ray beam attenuation is a non-invasive technique that permits analysis of soil porosity without disturbing the region of interest of the core sample. The technique has as additional advantage to allow measurements point by point on a millimetric scale in contrast to other methodologies that are invasive and analyze the soil properties in the bulk sample volume. Soil porosity can be used as an important parameter to quantify soil structural damages, which affect soil aeration, water movement and retention. In this study, porosities of three soils different in texture were measured at various positions in order to analyze the impact of the sampling procedure on the structure of each particular soil texture. The gamma-ray attenuation system consisted of an 241Am radioactive source having an activity of 3.7 GBq, collimated with cylindrical lead collimators of 2 mm diameter. The results obtained show the presence of dense regions near the edges of samples and that different soil textures can suffer distinct deformations at sampling.

In furrow irrigation, the maximum lateral movement of water in ridges is more desirable than the vertical downward movement. This can be achieved by compacting the furrows. Thus, the study examines the impact on furrow soil compaction by tractor wheel trafficking during mechanical operations in the different soil types. In this experiment, the three-wheel tractor compaction includes: 1) control (no soil compaction), 2) compaction through 3-wheel tractor passes, and 3) compaction through 6-wheel passes under three different soil textural classes such as: clay loam, silty clay loam and silty loam soils. The impact of various treatments on clay loam, silty clay loam, and silty loam under 3- and 6-wheel passes showed increased bulk density (7–12%), field capacity (9–19%), ridge storage efficiency (35–38%), water use efficiency (16–20.5%) and decreased soil porosity (7–16%), infiltration (8–20%), and furrow storage efficiency (28–41%) over the control. This study shows comparable results of 6-passes with other studies in which more than 6-passes were used to compact the soil. This study suggested that farmers can maximise water use efficiency by compacting their furrows using 6-passes tractor trafficking.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to investigate the soil properties and the species diversity of diatoms growing in different agricultural fields with silt loamy soil. The field experiment was conducted in 2014 in Kosina, near Łańcut (SE Poland), at three sites (indicated as fields K1, K2, K3) with different soil environmental conditions and plants. The growth of winter wheat Triticum aestivum (cv. Bogatka) in fields K1 and K2 and oats Avena Sativa (cv. Haker) in field K3 under different soil management were studied. The soil samples were collected from the top layers (0–5 cm depth) each month, from April to December. Certain physical and chemical parameters of soil were measured. The pH of soil was acidic and slightly acidic in fields K1 (5.0–5.4), K2 (4.9–5.9) and K3 (4.5–5.1). The soil in field K3 had a significantly greater content of organic matter (1.06–1.30%) and water content (12.9–33.8%, v/v) than fields K1 and K2. A total of 91 diatom taxa were found. The diversity was greatest in field K2 (71 taxa), lower in K1 (54 taxa) and K3 (24 taxa). In K1, the most numerous species were Luticola D.G. Mann cf. mutica, Mayamaea atomus var. permitis (Hust.) Lange-Bertalot, and Stauroneis thermicola (Petersen) Lund, with more than a 20% share in the assemblage. In K2, very abundant assemblages were formed by Mayamaea atomus (Kütz.) Lange Bertalot, Mayamaea atomus var. permitis (Hust.) Lange-Bertalot, and Stauroneis thermicola (Petersen) Lund with a 25 to 50% share in the total diatom community. In K3, with oat cultivation, a different diatom species structure was found. Here, the most abundant were Halamphora montana (Krasske) Levkov, Hantzchia amphioxys (Ehrenb.) Grunow, Mayamaea atomus (Kütz.) Lange-Bertalot, and Nitzschia pusilla Grunow, which attained a share in the assemblage exceeding than 20%. The effects of different soil management regimes under different plants on the physical and chemical properties of the soil, and on the diversity of diatoms, were significant (P<0.05). Soil water and organic matter content affects the yield of winter wheat and oats. Significant effects of water content and pH of silt loamy soil on the growth and the diversity of species of diatoms were found.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of reclamation on selected soil water properties in soils developed from lignite fly ash, deposited as a dry landfill, twenty years after forest reclamation was initiated. Five soil profiles, classified as technogenic soils (Technosols) within the fly ash disposal site of the Adamów (central Poland) power plant, were selected for this study. Disturbed and undisturbed samples (V=100 cm3) were collected from depths of 5–15 cm and 30–60 in each soil profile. The following physical properties were determined: particle size distribution, particle density, bulk density, soil moisture, hygroscopic water content, and the soil-water potential. Readily available water (RAW; difference of water content at pF=2.0 and at pF=3.7) and total available water (TAW; difference of water content at pF=2.0 and at pF=4.2) were calculated based on soil moisture tension (pF) values. The following chemical properties were determined: soil reaction, total organic carbon, total nitrogen content, carbonate content. Statistical analyses were conducted using the GenStat 18 statistical software package. The soils under study were characterized by very low bulk density, high total porosity, high field water capacity and maximum hygroscopicity. The RAW/TAW ratio values indicate very effective water retention in the soils, thereby ensuring a satisfactory water supply to the plants. However, statistical analysis did not show any clear trends in variability of any determined properties. The small differences in observed outcomes probably resulted from the original variability of the fly ash deposited on the studied landfill. Obtained results show the strong similarity of fly ash derived soils and Andosols in respect of physical and soil-water properties.

The paper presents the results of research on forest soil buffer capacity in selected protected areas. The soil buffer capacity was determined for each soil horizon using modified Arrhenius method. Buffer curves were sketched and soil buffer areas were measured with computer techniques. The date obtained were compared with some soil physical and chemical properties using statistical method. Organic (O) and humus (A) horizons of forest soils demonstrate a greater abilities of buffering alkalines than acids whereas buffer capacity of deeper-lying horizons changes as their physical and chemical properties change. Of the examined types of forest soils, the greatest buffer capacity was found for river alluvial soils. The results of the study indicate that the buffer areas are significantly correlated with pH, hydrolytic acidity, content of organic C, clay fractions, sum of exchangeable bases and cation exchangeable capacity.

The investigations on the effects of biochar application in improving the physio-chemical properties of soil have been carried out in many studies; however, there are very few studies on the combined use of both biochar and clay-rich soil for poor nutrient soil reclamation. Therefore, this study demonstrates improved water retention and nutrient retention of sandy soil by using biochar and biochar combined with clay-rich soil. The experiments were conducted on a small scale (greenhouse) with nine different application rates of biochar and clay-rich soil were mixed and then cultivated peanut, along with the drip irrigation technique using field moisture limit (about 70-80%) was applied under the condition of ensuring a sufficient supply of NPK for plant’s growth. The results showed that at the rates from 10.0-15.0% (w/w) clay-rich soil mixed with from 0.5-1.5% (w/w) of biochar applied to the tested sandy soil resulted in the positive effects on soil water holding, bulk density, permeability, pH, CEC, OM, total N, total P and peanut yield. The physical and chemical characteristics of the tested sandy soil have been improved by time and the application rate of 10.0% clay-rich soil and 0.5% biochar had the highest efficiency of pod fresh weight and pod dry weight during three studied seasons.

The study reported here was aimed at the estimation of the effects of over 15-years of cultivation of apple trees on the physical status of soil in orchards situated on various soils. The study was conducted on soils with silty particle size distributions (a Haplic Chernozem developed from loess, a Haplic Luvisol developed from loess (1), a Haplic Luvisol (non-uniform), developed from silt (2), and a Fluvic Cambisol developed from silty formations). The determinations included the particle size distribution and the density of the soils, solid phase density, total porosity (TP), field water capacity (FC). In addition, the quality of the air-water relations was analysed, determining the values of FC/TP ratio. The study showed that the values of the parameters under analysis were affected by the soil type, genetic horizon, soil layer, and also by the intensity of orchard care. Long-term maintenance of herbicide belts had a fairly beneficial effect on the physical status of the soils under study. A slight compaction of soil was noted (in comparison with the normal consolidation system of weakly-compacted one) as well as very good water properties. It is predicted that, only at the state of field saturation of the soil with water, conditions occurred that inhibited gas exchange between the soil and the atmosphere.
Przeprowadzone badania miały na celu ocenę wpływu ponad 15-letniej uprawy jabłoni na stan fizyczny gleby w sadach położonych na różnych glebach, w czterech wybranych mezoregionach Lubelszczyzny. Badania zostały przeprowadzone na glebach o pyłowym składzie granulometrycznym (Haplic Chernozem wytworzony z lessu, Haplic Luvisol wytworzona z lessu (1), Haplic Luvisol niecałkowita wytworzona z pyłu (2), Fluvic Cambisol wytworzona z utworów pyłowych). Określono uziarnienie i gęstość gleb, gęstość stałej fazy, porowatość ogólną (TP), polową pojemność wodną (FC) oraz przeprowadzono analizę jakości stosunków powietrzno-wodnych, wyznaczając wartości ilorazu FC/TP.

Coffee grounds (CG) improved some soil physical properties (dry density, gd; porosity, n; aggregation; hydraulic conductivity, Ks; and infiltration rate, IR). Effects on other properties were inconsistent (e.g., sorptivity, S), or unfavorable (e.g., available water, AW). gd decreased and n increased with CG. CG decreased Ks in sand. In calcareous soil, maximum increase was associated with 10% and 15% CG before and after wetting-and-drying cycles (WDC), respectively. Ks increased with CG in clay, with greatest increase attained at 10% CG. IR decreased with CG in sand. In calcareous and clayey soils, IR decreased with CG before WDC but increased after WDC where maximum increase in clay was linked to 10% CG. No solid trends of soil sorptivity, S, were identified. Before WDC, S had the order: sand > calcareous > clay. For most cases, adding CG increased total water holding capacity (WHC). However, after WDC, the increase in water content at field capacity (FC) with CG was accompanied by a greater increase in wilting point (WP) and therefore a decrease in AW. CG improved soil structure and aggregation and increased non-water-stable aggregates in calcareous and clayey soils. Mean weight diameter (MWD) indicated increase in water-stable aggregates in sand at 5% and 10% CG. In clay, MWD increased only at 5% CG. Although results did not show coherent responses with some tested properties, they, mostly, indicate some beneficial effects of CG, particularly in relation to improving aggregation and water flow.

Opis:
The effect of the passage of agricultural machinery on the soil is influenced by, for example, the inflation pressure in tyres. This article describes the effect of different tyre inflation pressures (200 and 100 kPa) on selected physical soil properties in the field experiment. The undisturbed samples were collected both in and between the tracks at depths of 0 to 0.5 m and subsequently processed according to a valid methodology in the laboratory. The results indicate that fewer negative changes were found in the variant with a lower inflation pressure for all of the observed soil properties (front wheels load 2 990 kg and rear wheels 11 760 kg). However, the differences between the pressures were not statistically significant. The impact of different tyre pressures at greater depths has also not been proven to date. This may be attributed to the creation of a plough pan due to the long-term use of the minimization technique because the values of individual properties were balanced at a depth of 0.2 to 0.3 m. These depths do not react to further tractor compaction due to the accumulation of compaction. Changes to the values of soil physical properties caused by the passage of the tractor were statistically significant for both tyre pressure variants only at depths ranging from 0 to 0.1 m.

Applied measures did not significantly diversify tested soil properties during the phase of intense plant growth. Whereas, distinct changes occurred before plant crop, but they took place only in soil surface layers. At both tested facilities the researchers observed increase of soil compactness in 50-100 mm layer, reaching approximately 54%. Moreover, they confirmed increase of density and drop of moisture content in soil surface layers at those facilities, where soil absorbent was applied.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate physical and energetic parameters of peat. Utility of the peat in horticulture and power generation were also estimated. Peat was mined from the Klejniki deposit, (Hajnówka municipality, Podlaskie province) in the north-eastern part of Poland. It was found that peat can be used for power generation, in the air-dry moisture condition. Peat parameters are similar to lignite. It can also be suitable for the production of horticultural substrates and incorporated into soil as a component for improving physical and chemical properties. The examined peat fulfills the requirements of for agricultural applications.

Opis:
Badano w warstwach: 25-30, 40-45, 55-60 cm glebę gliniastą uprawianą tradycyjnie (pług) i bezpłużnie (zestaw uprawowo-siewny). Oznaczono wybrane właściwości gleby: gęstość objętościową, porowatość aeracji, wilgotność aktualną, całkowitą pojemność wodną, naprężenie graniczne, zwięzłości gleby i opór jej ścinania w ruchu obrotowym. Stwierdzono, że siedmioletnia bezpłużna uprawa gleby nie spowodowała istotnych zmian w warstwie podornej.
The field studies were conducted on loamy soil to evaluate the impact of two compared tillage systems: ploughing and rotary cultivator, on physical and mechanical properties of the subsoil layer. The following physical and mechanical properties were examined: water content, bulk density, natural bulk density, penetration resistance, shear and pre-compaction stress. The soil samples were taken from 25-30; 40-45; 55-60 cm depth. The results showed that there was no difference between the compared tillage systems in terms of the assessed physical and mechanical properties.
