Opis:
If we want to develop farming on soil effectively and ecologically, we have to know the soil characteristics, the reasons for the potential low fertility and the ways how to eliminate them. Only this approach allows the rational utilization of the soil fund and achievement of the high effectiveness of the costs needed for the stabilization and increase of fertility and land capability. Recently, many scientific teams have focused their attention on the biochar, a lot of recommendations have been published which are dealing with its application into soil. However, the principal attention has been drawn to the impact of biochar on the particular soils and under the particular conditions. Far less information has been presented about the mutual interactions between the further significant agronomical factors in the combination with biochar. In this primary study, we analyze two new experiments established in the southwest part of Slovakia at the 1 Dolná Streda (sandy soil) and 2 Veľké Uľany (loamy soil) Localities. We discussed (1) the impact of the individual factors on the changes of soil characteristics, and (2) the impact of the individual interactions, such as: soil class – fertilization – biochar on the changes of the soil characteristics. The results indicated that the most significant factor, which influences the monitored soil parameters, is the soil class. The fertilization proved to be a factor which has a negative impact on the humus parameters; on the other hand, it improved the soil sorption. Biochar increased the content of the organic substances in soil and also its environmental effect of retention and immobilization of harmful elements and its positive effect on the soil structure was indicated. The highest frequency of the interactions between the monitored parameters related to the changes of soil characteristics was recorded in the combination fertilization x biochar, and also the soil class x fertilization x biochar.

The root system architecture (RSA) displays complex morphological characteristics because of diverse root growth behaviors. Recent studies have revealed that swarming behavior among roots is particularly important for RSA to adapt to environmental stimuli. However, few models are proposed to simulate RSA based on swarming behavior of roots. To analyze plasticity of RSA affected by swarming behavior, we propose viewing it as a swarm of single roots. A swarming behavior model is proposed by considering repulsion, alignment, and preference of individual single roots. Then, the swarming behavior model is integrated into a simple and generic RSA model (called ArchiSimple). Lastly, characteristics of RSA affected by swarming behavior model and non-swarming behavior model are compared and analyzed under three different virtual soil sets. The characteristics of RSA (such as primary root length, lateral root length, lateral roots, and resource uptake) are significantly promoted by swarming behavior. Root system distributions can also be greatly affected by swarming behavior. These results show that root foraging and exploration in soil can be regarded as collective behavior of individual single root.

Opis:
The study was focused on soil factors influencing species richness and diversity after disturbance of the substrate followed by abandonment. Two types of disturbances in the past were considered: the removal of trees and shrubs with the resulting major destruction of soils, and deep ploughing. As a control meadows not covered by any management schemes for 50 years were studied. The topsoil stripping resulted in decrease of potassium, nitrogen and organic carbon contents, while deep ploughing caused less radical effects. Simultaneously, disturbances of the soil delayed the course of succession, and brought increase in species. The most species-rich are ploughed meadows. No differences in terms of species diversity, domination and evenness between the forms of disturbances were identified. However, there were groups of species indicative for soil disturbances. Analysis of the relationships between vegetation differentiation and the properties of soil suggests that available phosphorus may affect species richness and diversity in mountain meadows.

The aim of the research was to analyse the impact of soil water potential on the concentration of aluminium and selected mineral nutrients in soil solution. Soil acidification is a natural process accelerated by agriculture, and one of the most important factors limiting crop production worldwide. Concentrations of aluminium and selected mineral nutrients in solutions obtained from soil at initial pH 4.2 and after liming at various soil water potential were measured in centrifuged soil solution. Our results showed a significant gradual increase in the concentration of Al and most of mineral nutrients (Ca, Mg and P) with decreasing soil water potential from −3.5 kPa to −0.205 MPa. The results are important in the evaluation and interpretation of plant response to aluminium toxicity when accompanied by changes in water availability.

Opis:
Integrated soil nutrient management is required to increase and sustain agricultural productivity. Assessment of soil, organic matter and nutrient losses was carried out in a 3-year integrated maize cropping system in Ghana. The treatments: no-till (NT), minimum tillage (MT), conventional tillage (CT) and soil amendments (Control, NPK, poultry manure and their combination), were arranged in a factorial design. The results showed soil loss to range from 0.140- 4.907 Mg·haˉ¹ in the order of NT < MT < CT < Bare. Soil loss reduction over the Bare was 88% by ½ Rates of NPK+PM, 87% by PM and 85% by NPK. Soil depth reductions in NT and MT were 92% lower than in CT. The loss of organic matter ranged from 47.6 kg·haˉ¹ to 120.70 kg/ha and was in the order of Bare > CT > MT > NT. Nutrient losses followed the same trend. Losses in soil organic matter, N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Na under tillage x soil amendments interactions were higher in the CT and bare plots. NT and MT, which were recognised as conservation tillage systems, amended with combination of organic and mineral fertilisers were found as better options in minimising soil quality degradation.

Opis:
We investigated the flowering probability and flower production in relation to plant size in a terrestrial orchid, Dactylorhiza majalis at 10 meadow sites in central and southwestern Poland. These sites differed in altitude (low, high) and management (presence or absence of mowing). At all sites, concentrations of nutrients in the soil were also measured. The probability of flowering increased significantly with the size of the plant in all populations, indicating that individuals do not flower until they reach a threshold size. Populations at high altitudes and the unmown sites had significantly lower threshold sizes for reproduction and showed sharp increase in flowering probability with plant size, compared to other populations. The threshold sizes for reproduction tended to decrease at sites rich in N and Mg and poor in P and S. Flower production was also size-dependent in all populations. Considerable between-site differences were found in the slope and the intercept of the regression between plant size and flower production. Flower production at some sites, at high altitudes, increased more steeply with plant size than at other sites. However, no pattern in size-dependent flower production was found relative to the measured environmental variables. Most of the size-dependent components of flowering probability were related to each other but not with the size-dependent flower production.

Opis:
An environmental study was performed in the years 2008-2012 to evaluate actual soil reaction (pHKCl) and content of nutrients in soils of south-eastern Poland and also to determine the relationship of those nutrients to soil properties. To carry out those studies, 15493 soil samples were chemically analysed in certified laboratory of Regional Agrochemical Station in Lublin. In all soil samples particle size distribution was determined using the Laser Diffraction Method, soil reaction – in 1 mol KCl·dmˉ³, phosphorus and potassium using Egner-Riehm method, and magnesium was assayed using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry method. The reaction of non-calcareous soils of south-eastern Poland was acidic (very light soils) or slightly acidic (light, medium and heavy soils), and for calcareous soils the it was alkaline. The chemical analysis revealed that supply of phosphorus was moderate (light and medium non-calcareous and very light calcareous soils), high (very light and heavy non-calcareous soils) and very high (light, medium and heavy calcareous soils), and it depended significantly on the soil reaction. The supply of potassium in non-calcareous soils was moderate and depended significantly on agronomic category and soil reaction. As for magnesium, the supply of this nutrient in calcareous and non-calcareous soils depended on agronomic category and soil reaction.

The Author tries to find an answer to the question: how fertilization practice of our days meets the former fertilizing philosophy? When analysing the NPK balances of Hungarian agriculture, it can be seen that the surplus appearing in the nutrient galance-sheet is a consequence of intensive fertilization in the past. The Author discusses some important factors related to liming and fertilization on poor acid soils, K- and P-responses of some crops and soil fertility and future tasks with regard to mineral fertilization. In conclusion the Author presents an opinion that the need for mineral fertilizer in Hungarian agriculture could be minimized, having the same or even higher yield levels in the near future and applying about 20-30 % less NPK fertilizers based on a more sound recommendation.

There exists an inadequate research on the propagation and nutrient needs of most tropical tree species. Hence, this work involves the developmental impact of soil amendments on the early growth of Streculia setigera Del. in the nursery. Different soil amendments; poultry waste (F1), goat manure (F2), cow manure (F3) and the control, normal soil (F4) were applied to several viable seeds of Streculia setigera in the nursery. The seeds were subjected to the same routine nursery practices. The experiment was laid in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and lasted for ninety (90) days. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA were used in the data analysis. The findings revealed that the entire growth response of Streculia setigera seedlings were only sparely affected by the soil amendments (P<0.05). F3 was found to be the most preferred soil amendment for this species, followed by F2 and F4 consecutively. The result obtained from F1 was very poor and thus it is not ideal for this species.

Opis:
From the early 60's till the late 80's, in many countries - among them also in Hungary - agricultural production went through a tremendous development. In Hungary there was a 2-3-fold increase in the average yields of winter wheat, and maize - the two main crops - in comparison to those of the 50's. One of the main factors determining these developments was the increasing use of mineral fertilizers. From the turn of the century till the late 50's, nutrient balances in Hungary were strongly negative: 20 - 30 kg/ha/year less N and K₂O, and 10 kg/ha/year less P₂O₅ was given to the fields in the different forms (farmyard manure, mineral fertilizer and by-products, etc.), than was removed by the harvested yields. Nutrient balances of P became positive in the early 60's, while balances of N and K in the early 70's, resp. Then, for 20 years, N balances were positive by 10 - 20 kg/ha/year, while both P₂O₅ and K₂O balances by 30 - 50 kg/ha/year, resp. These long-term positive nutrient balances resulted in the NPK enrichment of our soils, which was also proven by the national soil test series. During the 80's, for example, the amount of yearly applied mineral fertilizer was 230 - 280 kg/ha N + P₂O₅ + K₂O/arable land. In certain regions N leaching could cause environmental damage, while, as a result of the P-Zn antagonism, on the fields poorly supplied with Zn, overfertilization with P resulted in 1 - 2 t/ha/year maize yield losses. From the early 90's, however, when political and ecological changes took place in the country, the free market was introduced, and state subsidies on mineral fertilizer were withdrawn, there was a sharp decrease in mineral fertilizer use: applied N dropped to 1/5th, P and K to 1/20th of the amount used in the 80's. This dramatic decrease resulted in the change of nutrient balances: in 1991 the balance for N was -60, for P₂O₅ -30, and for K₂O -40 kg/ha for the whole country, resp. In 1992 and 1993 the situation was similar, while in 1994 a slight increase in mineral fertilizer use was observed. According to our estimation, mineral fertilization of 150 kg/ha/year N + P₂O₅ + K₂O is sufficient for long-term sustainable plant nutrition in Hungary, if farmyard manure application and the incorporation of byproducts remains on the recent level. During intensive fertilization practice, emphasis was on the quantity, while crop and soil demands for specific or more economic fertilizers were not taken into consideration. For N, lime ammonium nitrate, for P superphosphate, and for K, potash chloride was used on almost the whole area. As a new attempt to find more economic P sources, Algerian rock phosphate was checked in field trials, set up on characteristic acidic soils in different regions of Hungary, as well as other Central European countries. The first two-year results are discussed in the presentation.

Opis:
Soil acidification, fertility depletion, food insecurity, and environmental pollution all are consequences of the extensive use of chemical fertilizers (CF) in intensively managed plantations. Recent studies have shown that incorporating organic manure (OM) to partially replace CF can help to maintain productivity and soil health. There are no reports on integrated fertilizer management of Zanthoxylum armatum, for optimal ecological services and economic profitability. A pot experiment with Z. armatum was performed to investigate the possibility of incorporating OM in reducing CF use, enhancing soil fertility, and increasing plant growth. For this, seven treatments were designed: NPK, PK, NP, NK, OM, MNPK (50%NPK+50%OM), and control (CK, no fertilizer application). The results showed that NPK application significantly (P < 0.05) increased plant growth, soil nitrate-N, ammonium-N and available K compared to CK. However conventional CF application induced soil acidification. OM application raised the soil pH from 5.50 (CK) to 6.58 and significantly enhanced soil fertility by increasing alkali-hydrolysable N (2.3 times), ammonium-N (1.4 times), available P (4.3 times), the activity of invertase (1.5 times), catalase (2.8 times), acid phosphatase (1.5 times), and count of soil culturable microbes (2.9 times) compared to CK. Conversely, sole OM application did not result in optimum plant growth. Integrating OM with NPK (MNPK), on the other hand, not only provided the highest growth comprehensive value (0.84), but also substantially higher soil fertility comprehensive value (0.71) than traditional CF treatments. Correlation analysis also indicated a positive and significant correlation between soil microbes, enzyme activities and available nutrients. Therefore, OM+NPK could be an optimum measure to get maximum benefits regarding soil fertility, growth of Z. armatum, fertilizer savings and sustainable agroecology.

Opis:
The lack of organic matter content in deteriorated soils in drought stricken areas is a serious problem for vegetation cover. The use of organic amendments like biochar and compost to agricultural soils could be a good remedy for poor soil, water deficiency and plants growth. The comparative analysis of the effects of biochar produced from argan shells, compost and their mixture on the growth of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa), sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) was the main objective of this research. It was assumed that the addition of biochar mixed with compost could enhance soil fertility and then improve crop productivity of plants. For this purpose, three treatments (2%, 4% and 6%) of biochar (B), compost (C) and biochar–compost (B–C) mixture were applied to soil. The samples for different treatments were collected, incubated and then analyzed. In order to evaluate the plant growth, the greenhouse experiments were conducted for three months in the pots filled with untreated and treated soils. The results showed that the addition of biochar and compost to soil increased pH, electrical conductivity, exchangeable cations, total nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic matter and cation exchange capacity. A significant improvement of the biomass of plants has been observed when applying a mixture of biochar and compost at 6% for quinoa and sugar beet and at 4% for alfalfa. According to the obtained results, mixing argan biochar with compost has a positive impact on soil nutrients and growth of plants.

Opis:
Cement production is renowned for particulate contamination of the environment because of high dust emissions and heavy metals that later deposited in soils, serving as a sink. This study investigated the effect of cement dust pollution on some selected soil nutrients (phosphorous, protein, carbon and nitrogen) of the soil surface around Lafarge cement factory, Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria. Fifteen (15) composite topsoil samples of the soil surface were randomly collected in the eastern, western, and southern axes of the factory while control samples were collected 15 km from the factory. The samples were taken from a depth of 0 to 15 cm and analyzed for chemical, physical and microbiological properties. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results showed that Total Organic Nitrogen (TON), Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Heavy Metals decreased with increasing distance from the cement factory while there was increase in the amount of Soil Protein and Soil Phosphorous. In conclusion, the inverse correlation between most of these heavy metals, the pH, and the activities of the soil nutrients are indicative that pollution caused by cement production exhibit a significant effect on soil nutrients and this may invariably affect the quality and condition of the soil of the area.
