Opis:
Robert Morrison MacIver, the successor of Franklin H. Giddings at Columbia University, was a leading opponent of positivism (George Lundberg), empiricism (William Ogburn) and anti-theoretical praxism (Robert Lynd) in sociology. MacIver developed sociological theorizing according to Weber's tradition. The text was focused around the questions of temporality taken up by MacIver: 1) the question of a separate qualitative time; 2) the question of different temporal varieties of existence in the social-cultural area; 3) temporality of social action. MacIver, unnoticed by today's symbolic interactionists, tried to find implications of George H. Mead's work about time for analysis of action as dynamic transformation of the present. In MacIver's theorizing a unity of meaningful or symbolic and temporal aspects of social phenomena is obvious. MacIver's criticism of the methodology of social research focused on analysis of variables was in agreement with criticism of scientific mechanism offered by Bergson. He studied temporal varieties of existence of events, processes and cultural objects, and especially the various ways of entering time through society, history and culture. MacIver made temporality of action the basic and key problem. He should be considered a symbolic interactionist, like Florian Znaniecki and Pitirim Sorokin.

The contribution analyzes the most important risks of the present youth subcultures and the opportunities for social work and social pedagogy with regard to the problems of youth subcultures. The basic characteristics of youth subcultures is described as well as their social development, types and forms. The central meaning is inscribed to the possibilities of interdisciplinary coaction of social pedagogy and social work when solving specific problems of youth subcultures in the process of socialization during free time or at the penetration of social deviations. A specific attention is paid to the definition of the professional roles of social workers and social pedagogues in relation to the risky youth subcultures.

This article is about social and cultural time as a constant and recurrent motive in Zygmunt Bauman’s work. Time and detemporalisation processes, continuity and mutability, permanency and episodicity are all sometimes more, sometimes less clearly outlined but always present themes in his analyses of modernity, postmodernity, globalisation, consumption, consumer society, contemporary social polarisation, and the condition of the socially excluded. This recurrent presence of the temporal dimension in Bauman’s writings means that his entire work can be viewed as an original, multidimensional, coherent, consistent and also very interesting voice on time and its vicissitudes in our present world. Bauman’s contribution to the temporal analysis of our age is presented against the broader backdrop of contemporary reflection on the issue of time.

Opis:
Duration is one of the most serious drawbacks of the national unemployment. Some data on the unemployment structure including duration of remaining unemployed and selected demo-social features are available on the government websites. The subject literature shows results of standard, empirical analysis of the Polish unemployment structure from the point of view of its duration and selected demo-social features. On the other hand, estimates of the average duration of unemployment regardless of its range and its cross sections, are unknown. The paper attempts to assess the average duration of unemployment on the local labour market of the area of the District Job Centre of Pabianice. The characteristic is determined by means of individual information about each of the unemployed person and the moments of their registration and deregistration over the period from January 31 to September 30, 2005 with quarterly frequency. The study uses tools of duration analysis dedicated to right censored data. We can find the data in the stream analysis of unemployment in which both its duration and the status of an individual are known, i.e. information about whether an observation is complete or not. Results of conducted estimates concerning the average duration of unemployment are presented by means of the cross sections that arc also used in the registers of Job Centres. These standard criteria of the unemployed typology are: sex, age, level of education, marital status and job seniority. Results and suggestions coming from the conducted investigations enrich analyses concerning trends observed by analysts of the District Job Centre of Pabianice.

Opis:
The day and time of preaching in Church were set by biblical, pastoral, economic and political reasons. The privileged day for preaching has always been Sunday—the day on which Jesus Christ was resurrected and sent on the Apostles the Holy Spirit. Except for Sunday, sermons should be also given on important Church holidays, especially connected with the lives of Christ, the God’s Mother and some saints. For many centuries the holy Sunday mass could be celebrated between 9 and 13 as that was the time of Christ’s pain on the cross and His death. Then, the word of God was preached which emphasized that great salutary work. Social and economic changes, Church persecution and the II World War were the reasons why holy masses could take place also in the evenings and then sermons were given as well. Finally, the pastoral reasons made the present Church, along with the development of tourism and mobility, celebrate the holy mass in the evening on the day preceding Sundays and holidays. Taking part in the such a mass meets the requirement to participate in the holy mass obligatory for every believer. The celebrant, however, is obliged to give a homily.

In leisure activities is a reflection of attitudes, interests, and values that are important to people. The future belongs to the youth, the youth sets the tone for the present, discovers and promotes new ways of spending free time. Increasingly negative scenarios are written according to which the future of young people and whole societies in leisure time will be marked by individualism and infantilism. Did university students experiencing leisure time in a conscious and mature?

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between work time control and mental health in workers working long hours. The study also attempted to show how that relationship depended on age and gender. Three hundred and six white-collar workers doing clerical work for over 8 h daily were diagnosed on work time control and mental health with the 28-item General Health Questionnaire. The results of an analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that participants working long hours but having high control over their work time had a significantly higher level of their mental health with regard to somatic complaints and anxiety and marginally higher with regard to social dysfunction than workers with low control over their work time. Male and female workers reported different problems with their mental health depending on what age (stage of life) they were at. It is hypothesized that the work–family conflict, inability to fulfil social commitments and poor working conditions can influence those effects.

The research studies on collective memory in Poland have long tradition and clear cultural perspective. The aim of the text is to show this research tradition, which is deeply associated withDurkheimian School legacy, very strong in Poland, both in prewar as well as in postwar period, especially in the work of Stefan Czarnowski, the only Polish member of this School. In this perspective the social memory is closely connected with culture and time. These two categories: culture and social time as important factors in collective memory studies conducted in Poland are object of the present paper. The paper is composed of three parts. In the first one author explains why relations between social memory, culture and social time are important for evaluation of the Polish research tradition. The second part concerns its cultural perspective and is dedicated to the works of Stefan Czarnowski, who started many years ago the cultural stream in Polish memory studies. The third part presents the idea of social time and relations between sociology of time and memory studies in Polish sociology. This specificity of the Polish research studies on collective memory is unknown today, especially for foreign researchers. This tradition is worthy to be recollected.

This paper shows correlations between leisure time and economy. Leisure time is an integral part of human life. The amount of leisure time and its role have changed. It was dependent on the social and economic transformations in countries. Technical progress and social change have become a major factor in the economic transformation and the amount of leisure time. The increasing wealth of societies that have leisure time is the enormous potential that is used by the various branches of the economy. The level of employment in the various sectors of the economy has changed because of leisure time. Creativity and employee productivity depends on their recreation. This is important for the competitiveness of the economy. People in their spare time can also engage in the local community. It determines the strength of civil society. As a result, leisure time is one of an important part of the economy.

It is well known that our internal state affects our ability to perform everyday tasks. Some studies [6], [17] found that the admonition to live for a present is more important than we imagined. A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind [13]. The objective of the current study was to determine how living for a present relates to quality of life and functional fitness of senior cohorts (n = 38 F. mean age = 75,6 years (SD ± 9.4) that exercise regularly. Older adults completed a functional fitness test battery, quality of life and living for a present questionnaire. Living for a present was associated with age of participants, quality of life and BMI. No statistical significance was found between living for a present, functional fitness and medication use. The results support the role of living for a present as a correlate of age, BMI and quality of life. These data substantiate that living in a present could serve as an important course for better existence. In any means our study is not conclusive. Further study are needed to clarify this complex issue as living for a present no doubt represents.

Opis:
Three main problems are considered. The first is that psychology should avoid any inclination towards neuroscience or a type of brain science. Making use of the achievements of natural sciences, psychology should take into regard the cultural conditions [determinants] and methods worked out in social sciences. Thus, it should adopt the antireductionistic methodological programme. The second problem is that psychology must reject the papers that entice with apparent scientific approach being actually of no real worth. Also the threat posed to psychological practice by pseudo-scientific monographs and pseudo-test should be recognised. They offer scientifically false basis of practical work of psychologists in the sphere of social practice. The third problem is that each psychological practice should be preceded by a psychological theory that is empirical and needs to be verified by a methodologically correct method. Thee underlying empirical psychological theory makes a given psychological practice sensible and ethical. The status of psychology as a science and the status of psychological practice are related to the quality of education of future psychologists. The author definitely opts for the model of full-time 5-year master’s degree studies (so against the Bologna model of 3-year licentiate (BA) followed by a 2-year master’s degree study (MA)), supplemented with a one-year training under supervision of an experienced specialist. The effective and ethical work of professional psychologists in Poland suffers from the lack of legal regulations that would protect this profession against the infiltration of all kinds of charlatans offering pseudo-scientific diagnostic tools like e.g. the Tree test of Charles Koch and therapies like e.g. the Systemic Constellation of Bert Hellinger. Of utmost importance is development of not only methodological awareness but also ethical awareness in psychologists and students of psychology. Moreover, the education should bring the realisation of the effects and danger of scientific misconduct of FFP type, that is fabrication, falsification, plagiarism.
