The primar goal of the article is to explore some important aspects present in the short story “Juana y la cibernetica” (1963) written by Elena Aldunate (1925-2005). The author of the article points that it is necessary to investigate the discourses which—being in mutual tension—give the structure to the story and which themselves could be restructured in this process. By setting the text in the history we can displace the critical interest raised by the prose of Elena Aldunate from the most popular level of anecdotes, themes and other products of the psychological or biographical type of reading to a real kind of textualization (cf. Robin and Angenot 1991; Robin 1993). That statement must be understood as a work approach. Try to explain the need for this return to the socio-historical and also try to open certain ways to follow in future research, hoping that truly interrogate “Juana …” and Elena Aldunate’s writing.

Opis:
The topic of migration is often used by populist and non-populist politicians in order to arouse emotions, polarise social attitudes and thus mobilise voters. The present study aims to identify themes (a cognitive aspect of attitudes) and discrete emotions (an emotional aspect of attitudes) in online social discourse as a reaction to the media posts of the main Slovak political parties on the topic of migration in the pre-election period (January-February 2020). Methodological triangulation of discourse analysis and Text mining was used to analyse the data. Analysis of the discourse revealed that articles with pro-migrant rhetoric provoked more discussion about the security and identity threat, while articles by populists provoked more discussion about the morality of elites and the economic threat of migration. The evoked sentiment throughout the discourse leaned more towards negative emotions (fear, anger) but pro-migrant articles and articles by non-populist politicians evoked also positive emotions (joy). Results indicate that rather than fear of migration, the anticipation of a change in the morale of the elites was the key element of the pre-election period in Slovakia. Limitations and implications of the study are further discussed. The value of this paper lies in focusing on both emotional and cognitive aspects of attitudes towards migration.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to answer the question about the causes of the rhetoric crisis and its role in social discourse. The theoretical basis of these considerations and their reference point is the concept of new rhetoric in terms of the contemporary rhetoric and argumentation theorist Chaim Perelman. The first part briefly describes contemporary cultural discourse that takes place in a democratized society in the era of so-called new media. It indicates that inquiry into rhetoric (which started in antiquity) is also inquiry into universal criteria for cultural discourse, as well as the timeless and supra-cultural norms and principles that regulate this discourse (taking into account ongoing social and cultural changes). The second part of the article refers directly to the position of Chaim Perelman on the crisis of rhetoric. Perelman saw the main reason for this crisis in the separation of rhetoric from philosophy. The third part characterizes the new rhetoric in terms of its novelty and timeliness, as well as its reference to classical (Aristotelian) rhetoric. The fourth part points to the application of the concept of new rhetoric in cultural discourse. It discusses Perelman’s concept of universal audience, as well as the problem of concrete and abstract values, the understanding of which by the members of a given audience does or does not enable the communication (consensus) between each other. The end of the article briefly assesses Perelman’s contribution to understanding rhetoric and his role in restoring rhetoric to its rightful place in social discourse.

Opis:
Następnie poruszono kwestie dotyczące m.in. oczekiwań społeczeństwa.
In this article the author describes the ongoing issue related with the Infertility Treatment Bill from the legal and social point of view. As far as the author is concerned, the current social situation, with the conservative circle approval for regulating the in vitro method in particular, gives a chance for the bill of the Ministry of Health on infertility treatment to be the first of that kind of act in Poland. At the beginning, the author describes a structure of the Polish social discourse on legislation proposals of the in vitro method. Then, selected law regulations provided for in a bill with the indication of their neutral character in the social dispute are discussed. Furthermore, the author raises the issue that the infertility treatment bill is one of the most expected by the society. The analysis is supported by the results of the opinion poll and compared with the legal and social situation of Italy. In summary, the author underlines that the law has been left far behind by technology and is of the opinion that the legislator does not take the standpoint of the society into account. In the last sentence, the author agrees with the opinion that the law cannot force the solutions that are contrary to the beliefs of a part of the society, and that the actions accepted by the law cannot be compulsory for those who do not agree with them.

Opis:
Public service campaigns and communications disseminated by the government is aimed at highlighting proper and pro-social behaviors, while trying to discourage socially destructive ones. As a result of their dissemination, an informed social collective is transformed into a collective that is aware, active and willing to act on an individual and collective level within the framework of social discourse. Taking up the research problem presented in this paper was caused by the highly visible – in particular in social media – debate undertaken by the Polish society, which concerned the political communications offered by the Polish Ministry of Health as part of its public service announcements published in connection with the global COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The aim of the paper is not only to showcase the possibilities afforded by using social campaigns in the field of political communications, but above all to illustrate the discourse of the Polish society in social media as an impulsive and emotional response to the government's inability to communicate using such campaigns. Particular attention was paid to the government’s mistakes noted and highlighted by the public in numerous comments, which slipped through cracks in government's control.

Emotional discourse and its role in the development of the knowledge of emotionsThe term “emotional discourse” refers to the child’s participation in conversations about emotions. A great body of research (Dunn et al., 1991; Dunn, Brophy, 2005; Harris, 2005; Peterson, Slaughter, 2006) indicate that there is a significant correlation between the child’s participation in emotional discourse (with his/her mother, siblings or friends) and his/her emotional knowledge. The aim of the article is to analyze the role of emotional discourse in the development of the knowledge of emotions. Theories of discourse (van Dijk, 1985; 1990; Shugar, 1995) and of cognitive development (Karmiloff-Smith, 1992; Stemplewska-Żakowicz, 2001; Tomasello, 2002) indicate that in discourse the child has an opportunity to gain knowledge about invisible phenomena and is confronted with distinct perspectives. The child has also an opportunity to name and organize his/her emotions and to make distinctions between them due to verbal terms provided by his/her partner in discourse. Therefore the child’s participation in emotional discourse facilitaties his/her becom ing aware of his/her emotional states together with their causes and consequences, and – due to confrontation with distinct perspectives – the development of the discursive representation of emotions.

CDA is a developing, in our country as well, method of discourse analysis, operating in a wide borderlinebetween the humanitiesand social sciences. It emphasizes the social context of the language in use and its relations with the social reality. A methodological and interdisciplinary openness of this approach is an answer to multimodal, complex and often unclear phenomena and socio-cultural structures which contain interwoven themes from various areas and are beyond traditional disciplinary classifications. This area includes politics, religion, economy, media, promotional culture or entertainment. Therefore, CDA can be used in various heterogeneous research areas, also by interdisciplinary research teams made up of specialists from various areas of expertise

German model of social policy, public discourse, childcare, work and family life
Opis:
Family Policy in Germany The family policy of the past ten years has been influenced mainly by three (discourse) events: (1) by the discussion of demographic change and the continuing low birth rate of 1.4 children per woman on average, (2) by the debate on the link between educational success and social origin, particularly under the impression of the negative results for Germany compared to other OECD countries in the PISA studies, and (3) by the challenges of increasing paid occupation among women and the insufficient compatibility of work and family life, which were communicated in the political sphere not least by EU targets as part of the Lisbon strategy.Family policy in Germany has therefore advanced from a “niche subject” to an important policy field. In alignment with the “family policy triad” (BMFSFJ 2006) consisting of monetary benefits, infrastructure measures and time policy, various measures have been taken since 2005, whereby the first two fields (money + infrastructure) form the focus of the present article. The traditionally high financial and tax-related benefits used in family policy (regulated via federal laws) have been modernized in part (e.g. child benefit, parental benefit), yet also continue the classic direction of the federal German model (e.g. income splitting for tax purposes for married couples, contribution-free insurance for marriage partners, double system of child benefit and tax allowance for children). Particularly the inability to tackle child poverty effectively and the strong focus on marriage in German federal family policy remain largely untouched. With regard to infrastructure measures (competencies on the state level, implementation by local authorities), since 2005 the act for the expansion of daycare and the child support act on the federal level have introduced the expansion of public childcare for children under three in particular, thus launching further-reaching steps towards early-childhood education and improved compatibility of working and family life. Here too, however, alongside questions of social selectivity in the field of early-childhood education and quality assurance for care outside the home, the objective must be to link paid employment with needs and necessities for care work for women and men, and to ensure high quality care.At least three weak points in the construction of German federal family policy are responsible for these desiderata: firstly, the conflict of competencies within the federalist structures, between the federal, state and local authority levels; secondly, the lack of coordination between family policy and other policy fields such as labour market, education and equality policy; and thirdly, the historically caused insufficient tackling of social inequalities in German family policy.

More and more high functioning pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are finishing school, graduating and entering higher education, but in Poland the exact number of these students is still unknown. For academics, especially outside the field of pedagogy and psychology, it is a major challenge to work with students with such dysfunctions. This can activate the social labelling process and negative stigmatisation on the part of people who do not have the knowledge and ability to interact with people with autistic traits. This, in turn, can contribute to perpetuating the stigmatic identity of non‑neurotypical students. This article is exploratory. Its purpose is to present the complexity of the situation of students with ASD within the exceptional environment of a university. The inspiration was a controversial article published in a newspaper which evoked a media debate on this issue and activated the process of objectification of social representations of non‑neurotypical adults, especially those with autistic traits.

With the popular and the political competing for our global electronic attention what is often overlooked are questions surrounding access and participation on social media platforms, which have become contested domains of advertising, recruitment, propaganda, and activism. As the very definitions of what it means to be „literate“ or what constitutes a „text“ continue to change, having the ability to „read“ continues to hold significant importance. Marshall McLuhan argues in The Guttenberg Galaxy that the printing press created a paradigm shift. In removing the mystique from texts and making ideas more accessible not only did literacy rates rise, but for McLuhan, social relations and power dynamics were fundamentally and irrevocably changed. In line with a history of humanity that continually shifts power and social relations through uses of new technologies, this paper explores how new forms of language and social patterns of interactions on social media have created a similarly potent paradigm shift, changing the meaning of existence both online and in person. This is the Googleburg Galaxy.

Discussions about the support system for children experiencing violence have been taking place both on an international forum as well as locally in Poland. (Zmarzlik, 2011; Wójcik, 2013; Jarosz, 2007; Jarosz, 2008; Jarosz, 2018; Dąbrowska, 2012). The questions about who should undertake tasks in this area and what their scope and type should be are still unresolved. Individuals who work with abused children agree that teachers may be an important link in the support system due to their role. The purpose of the current study is to examine the tasks of the school in the context of the experience of children growing up in a family with a problem of domestic violence. In contemporary discourses on preventing domestic violence against children, the active participation of the children themselves in creating solutions in this area is increasingly emphasized. Due to the participatory and emancipatory character of the project, the current research represents the paradigm of qualitative methodology and, within it, the assumptions of radical humanism. The final result is a description which includes answers to the above research questions and an analysis of legal and statutory actions aimed at social emancipation through education and participation of individuals experiencing domestic violence. In light of international standards of support for abused children, education can and should play a significant support role. Education and participation are considered significant factors in the social emancipation of children - victims of domestic violence - and their families. However, in the perception of individuals experiencing violence, schools do not effectively fulfill their role in this respect. It seems that the place a teacher will take in the process of supporting abused children and their families will depend largely on how the teachers themselves define their own role, as well as on the appropriate legislative solutions for their education. I think that the curricula of teachers’ studies should not only include obligatory exercises in cooperation procedures and communication skills workshops, but they should also address issues shaping active attitudes towards the situations the teachers will find themselves in over the course of their careers.

W niniejszym artykule analizuję współczesny dyskurs nauk społecznych pod kątem obecności w nim badań nad przerywaniem ciąży. Aborcja jest często występującym zabiegiem medycznym, a jednocześnie stanowi jeden z najgorętszych przedmiotów debaty publicznej angażujący środowiska religijne, feministyczne i polityczne.
The article herein analyzes the contemporary discourse of social sciences with regard to the presence of research on abortion within it. Abortion is a regular medical practice in the world. At the same time, it is one of the most controversial yet vivid topics of public discussions, engaging religious, feminist, and political circles. In my paper, I am looking for an answer to the question about whether the popularity of this subject in the public sphere is reflected within the discourse of social sciences. I am interested in how focusing the discourse on particular research perspectives – individual, social, institutional, and methodological – constructs ‘the sociology of abortion.’ The analysis of the discourse on abortion shows that research on abortion in the most prestigious academic journals concerns mostly the Anglo-American societies. Moreover, research on abortion constitutes a small percentage of all articles published in the analyzed social-sciences journals, while the dominant perspective involves researching abortion through the prism of social opinions. The least attention is paid to researching abortion from the individual perspective that involves the experiences of those women who have had abortion.

This paper gives a critical overview of various analytical approaches dominating the field of discourse studies in the last three decades, from the perspective of their philosophical and formative bases: social constructionism and linguistics. It explores different conceptions and features of the theoretical nexus between these two bases leading to the emergence of three distinct yet apparently complementary strands of thought (i-iii). The paper starts with the account of (i) Laclau and Mouffe’s classical discourse theory and its idea of ‘discursive struggle’ – a struggle of particular ways of talking of and understanding the world in an attempt to achieve discursive (and social) hegemony. Laclau and Mouffe’s assumption that no discourse is a closed entity but rather transformed through contact with other discourses is then taken as the introductory premise to present a vast, complex and heterogeneous family of (ii) critical discourse studies. Critical discourse studies are characterized in the paper as a hub of text-analytical practices that work on the link between language and social reality from the perspective of power and empowerment, explaining how discourse partakes in the production, change and negotiations of ideologically-charged meanings. Most crucially, they establish a methodological link between social theory and linguistics, providing discourse analysis with text-analytical tools and methods. Finally, the paper discusses (iii) three recent discourse analytical models: Discourse Space Theory, Critical Metaphor Analysis and Legitimization-Proximization Model. Originally located in the cognitive-psychological strand of critical discourse studies, these new models can now be seen as fully-fledged discourse theories with their own apparatus of analysis, involving concepts from cognitive linguistics, pragmatics and social psychology. It is argued that these three new theories make a further (and thus far final) step toward consolidation of the social-theoretical and linguistic bases in contemporary discourse studies. The empirical benefits of this consolidation are discussed in the last part of the paper, which includes a brief case study where the new models are used in the analysis of Polish anti-immigration discourse.
