    Trade unions in Poland have not built the stable and long–term relations with political parties as are observed in Western democracies. By analysing the historical and symbolic background of the transformation to a democratic civil society and free market economy, political preferences of working class, trade union membership rates, and public opinion polls, we argue that, in case of Poland, the initial links between political parties and trade unions weakened over time. Polish trade unions never had a chance to become a long–term intermediary between society and political parties, making the Polish case study a double exception from the traditional models.

    The war initiated by the Russian Federation against Ukraine in 2022 can be seen as a drastic shock event with unpredictable long-term socio-political consequences at the national, regional and global levels. This study aims to identify the impact of war-related disturbances on the dynamics of social cleavages in Ukraine, in particular the possibility of deepening or diminishing such cleavages or promoting the occurrence of new ones. For decades, the internal partition of Ukraine into East and West has been attributed to national self-identification, linguistic and religious peculiarities and the geopolitical preferences of residents of different regions. Shortly before and after the outbreak of the Russian invasion, fundamental changes in Ukrainian society and domestic politics became evident, some of which can be interpreted as signs of the mitigation of social cleavages. Our findings revealed at least two significant shifts in these ‘old’, traditional cleavages: one occurred after the Revolution of Dignity and the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, and the second one is emerging now, due to the full-scale war on Ukrainian territory against the Ukrainian people. More broadly, this research aims to assess the resilience of social cleavages in the face of a shock event.

    Transformacja współczesnego społeczeństwa związana z przejściem do tzw. społeczeństwa informacyjnego skutkuje kształtowaniem się nowych podziałów społecznych. Można wskazać na kilka najważniejszych linii podziałów i konfliktów oraz na ich polityczne konsekwencje. W artykule autor stara się wskazać najważniejsze podziały społeczne politycznie doniosłe (social cleavages), które są efektem dwóch „ponowoczesnych” rewolucji: „postindustrialnej” i „postnarodowej”. Analiza nowych podziałów socjo-politycznych pozwala na lepsze zrozumienie sukcesów ruchów antyestablishmentowych.
    Transformation of our society creates new social cleavages. There are a number of significant social cleavages and political conflicts within the information society. In the article, the author tries to identify the most important social cleavages that will emerge as a result of two “postmodern” revolutions: the “postindustrial” and “postnational” one, and also tries to analyse its political consequence. As an effect of “postindustrial revolution” we can observe the cleavage between the primary and secondary economy and cleavage between social class formed by the people suffering from precarity and social class which benefited from economic globalization. As an effect of “postnational revolution” we can observe cleavage between localist and cosmopolitan identities or hybrid identity vs. traditional identity. These cleavages influence the contemporary existing political relationship within political parties.

    W artykule podjęty został problem różnych strategii argumentacyjnych w obrębie dyskursu o imigrantach. W pierwszej części znalazł się krótki opis zjawiska imigracji w Polsce. Kolejna część to wyjaśnienie głównych metodologicznych założeń (społeczne reprezentacje, ramowanie) oraz użytych w analizie kategorii analitycznych. W głównej części artykułu zaprezentowano wyniki badania. Koncentrują się one na różnych typach strategii argumentacyjnych obecnych w tygodnikach „III RP” i „IV RP”. Wnioski z badań wskazują na sprzeczność i antagonizmy między dwoma typami narracji o imigrantach i o proponowanych rozwiązaniach kryzysu. W ostatniej części tekstu zawarto tezy mówiące o tym, że „sprawa” imigrantów jest jednym z kluczowych czynników podtrzymujących podziały społeczne, zwłaszcza jeśli powiąże się ją z postawami społecznymi wobec modernizacji i transformacji systemowej.
    The article deals with the problem of different argumentation strategies inside the discourse about immigrants. In the beginning there is a short description of immigration phenomena in Poland. The next section explains the main methodological assumptions (social representation, framing) and basic analytical categories applied in researches presented in this paper. The main part of the article concerns the research outcomes. They concentrates on different types of argumentation strategies in III RP and IV RP weekly magazines. Final results show the contradictions between two types of narrations about the immigrants and about expected crisis solutions. In the last segment of the article it is expressed that the immigration issue is one of the factors in the process of social cleavages sustain, especially when it comes to the attitude towards modernization and system transformation.

    Western Europe of the early 21st century is going through a process that is sometimes referred to as “the arrival of the Third Wave civilization”, that is the information civilization. The civilizational transformations result in two “revolutions” – post-national and post-industrial. Just like the 19th-century national and industrial revolutions, they involve deep social changes and consequently provoke resistance and a wave of counter-mobilisation against the upcoming “new order” – global, post-national, and post-industrial. The basic assumption of this article is that the classical theoretical schemes developed by Stein Rokkan and Seymour Lipset may come as analytical tools useful in explaining contemporary political phenomena. Rokkan’s theory seems to be the analytical model that is still helpful in explaining the election behaviours as well as political conflicts and divisions present within current political systems, and its heuristic power is high.
    Na przełomie dwudziestego i dwudziestego pierwszego wieku kraje wysoko rozwinięte przechodzą proces, który określany jest niekiedy mianem „nadejścia trzeciej fali cywilizacyjnej”, związanej z rewolucją technologii informacyjnych. Ta transformacja cywilizacyjna skutkuje procesami, które można określić mianem „rewolucji post-industrialnej” oraz „rewolucji post-narodowej”. Podobnie jak miało to miejsce w wypadku nowoczesnej rewolucji narodowej i przemysłowej, tak samo dwie „ponowoczesne” rewolucje wywołują głębokie zmiany w strukturze społecznej, prowokując tym samym opór wobec zmian i nadchodzącego „nowego porządku społecznego”. Podstawowym celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na heurystyczne możliwości modelu analitycznego zaproponowanego przez Steina Rokkana i Seymoura Lipseta do badania podziałów społecznych politycznie doniosłych. Autor argumentuje, że Rokkanowski model może być przydatny w próbie wyjaśniania współczesnych zjawisk politycznych.

    Po ponad 25 latach od początku transformacji warto zastanowić się nad obecnymi podziałami socjopolitycznymi w polskim społeczeństwie. W tekście zaprezentowane zostaną wyniki badań dotyczące praktyk ramowania w przypadku Okrągłego Stołu i transformacji w polskich tygodnikach opinii. Ich dziennikarze, mimo zmiany formuły działania mediów, wciąż mogą być traktowani jako reprezentanci elit symbolicznych. Organizują oni dyskurs polityczny, definiując „prawidłowe” sposoby postrzegania i interpretowania rzeczywistości. W warunkach zerwanej przekładalności perspektyw na dynamikę dyskursu wpływają spory, które można uznać za kontrowersje, rozumiane za Markiem Czyżewskim jako dotyczące zarówno poziomu komunikacyjnego, jak i metakomunikacyjnego (definicja problemu, przypisywanie motywów działania drugiej stronie sporu). Przedmiotem toczonych sporów stają się wspólnotowa symbolika i wartości, na których skoncentrowane są strategie argumentacyjne przyjmowane w tygodnikach. Używając pojęć Jeffreya Alexandra, strony zaangażowane w dyskurs przypisują sobie kod demokratyczny, a swym adwersarzom niedemokratyczny. Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja i opis praktyk ramowania i przeramowania Okrągłego Stołu jako wydarzenia inicjującego zmiany transformacyjne. W tekście znajdują się również uwagi dotyczące wspólnot interpretacyjnych w debacie publicznej.
    After more than 25 years since the beginning of the transformation it is worth considering the present socio-political cleavages in Polish society. The text will present the results of a research on framing analysis of the Round Table and transformation in the Polish weekly opinion magazines. Their journalists, despite changes in the media working formula, can still be regarded as the representatives of symbolic elite. They organize political discourse by defining “correct” ways of perceiving and interpreting reality. Under the broken reciprocity of perspectives the dynamics of discourse is affected by disputes which could be considered as “controversies,” which can be understood, followed by Marek Czyżewski, as regarding both the communication and the metacommunication level (definition of the problem, assigning acting motives to the other side of the dispute). The dispute subjects are community symbolism and values on which the argumentation strategies adopted in the weeklies magazines are concentrated. Using the concepts of Jeffrey Alexander, it can be said that the parties involved in the discourse assign democratic code to themselves and undemocratic one to their adversaries. The objective of the article is to identify and describe framing and re-framing practices of the Round Table as initial event of Polish transformation. There are also presented some remarks concerning the problem of interpretive communities in the public debate.

    This article concerns discourse in the 4th Republic and its role in creating the divisions and cleavages of Polish society. The author analyzes the argumentation strategies used by the press supporting the government and its so-called “good change” (the weeklies Sieci and Uważam Rze, which were published in the years 2012–2017). He concentrates on selected rhetorical practices such as labeling, categorization, and discrimination, and determines that the center of the argumentation strategy of the weeklies analyzed is a discursively constructed division between the “elites” and the “masses” ordinary people”). This type of strategy allows the building of a Me-Them dichotomy, which serves not only to strengthen divisions but also to de-legitimize the social space of the 3rd Republic and give legitimacy to the “good change” of the 4th Republic. These activities are exemplified by the manner in which the writers in opinion-forming weeklies describe and explain selected topics and events, such as the Round Table Talks or the migration crisis. The author finds that in the argumentation strategies analyzed, the “nation” is understood as an exclusive community defined from an essentialist perspective. He relates these and other findings to the problem of the new, simplified form of political rivalry and contemporary election campaigns.

    W artykule analizowana jest problematyka popękania społeczeństwa polskiego. Pojęcie to odnoszone jest do tradycyjnych pojęć socjologicznych opisujących zróżnicowania społeczne: podziałów klasowych, podziałów społeczno-politycznych, zróżnicowania stylów życia czy wzorów konsumpcji, nieciągłości dyskursu społecznego. Krótki przegląd stanowisk teoretycznych, od Marksa i Webera aż po Bourdieu, dopełnia bardziej wnikliwa prezentacja dokonań polskich autorów – klasycznych i współczesnych. Jako pole analiz popękania społeczeństwa polskiego wskazuje się: po pierwsze, „klasyczne” podziały wynikłe z różnic w położeniu w strukturze społecznej; po drugie, „nowe” podziały związane z konsumpcją i stylami życia; po trzecie, podziały społeczno-polityczne (rozumiane zgodnie z koncepcją Lipseta i Rokkana); po czwarte, obszar języka, komunikacji, dyskursu. Dalej następuje dyskusja uwzględniająca zarówno koncepcje teoretyczne, jak i – w miarę możliwości – dane empiryczne z czterech wskazanych pól popękania społeczeństwa polskiego. Sformułowane wnioski mają charakter nieostateczny. Obecnie podziały o charakterze klasowo-warstwowym nie zanikają, konsumpcja wykazuje zarówno klasowo-warstwowe zróżnicowanie, jak i jednorodność przekraczającą granice grup społecznych, elektoraty się krystalizują, zaś podziały w sferze języka wydają się wyraziste. Ponadto istnieją pewne zależności struktury klasowej, sfery konsumpcji i zachowań politycznych, z którymi łączą się podziały w sferze języka i dyskursu. Sytuacja wydaje się jednak dynamiczna.
    This article analyzes the phenomenon of the fracturing of Polish society. In introducing this concept it relates to the traditional sociological descriptors of social differentiation: class divisions, sociopolitical cleavages, variations in lifestyle or consumption patterns, and discontinuities in public discourse. A short review of theoretical stances, from Marx and Weber through to Bourdieu is complemented by a more in-depth analysis of the contributions of Polish authors – both classical and modern. The scope of analysis of the fracturing of Polish society is determined by: firstly, the “classical” social divisions, deriving from differing positions in the social structure; secondly, the “new” divisions associated with consumption and lifestyles; thirdly, the socio-political cleavages (understood according to Lipset and Rokkan); and fourthly, the field of language, communication, and discourse. This is followed by a discussion of these four fields of the fracturing of Polish society, taking into account both theoretical conceptions and the available empirical data. The findings of this discussion are of a preliminary nature. Currently the divisions into social class-stratum types are continuing in force. Consumption exhibits both class-stratum differentiation as well as uniformities exceeding the boundaries of social groups, the electorates are crystallizing, and the divisions within the sphere of language use seem to be prominent. In addition certain relationships between class structure, consumption patterns and political behaviours also exist, which are associated with divisions in language use and discourse. The landscape of these differences is, however, subject to rapid changes.
