Opis:
The learning of neural networks is becoming more and more important. Researchers have constructed dozens of learning algorithms, but it is still necessary to develop faster, more flexible, or more accurate learning algorithms. With fast learning we can examine more learning scenarios for a given problem, especially in the case of meta-learning. In this article we focus on the construction of a much faster learning algorithm and its modifications, especially for nonlinear versions of neural networks. The main idea of this algorithm lies in the usage of fast approximation of the Moore–Penrose pseudo-inverse matrix. The complexity of the original singular value decomposition algorithm is O(mn2). We consider algorithms with a complexity of O(mnl), where l < n and l is often significantly smaller than n. Such learning algorithms can be applied to the learning of radial basis function networks, extreme learning machines or deep ELMs, principal component analysis or even missing data imputation.

Opis:
A novel method for feature extraction and recognition called Kernel Fuzzy Discriminant Analysis (KFDA) is proposed in this paper to deal with recognition problems, e.g., for images. The KFDA method is obtained by combining the advantages of fuzzy methods and a kernel trick. Based on the orthogonal-triangular decomposition of a matrix and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), two different variants, KFDA/QR and KFDA/SVD, of KFDA are obtained. In the proposed method, the membership degree is incorporated into the definition of between-class and within-class scatter matrices to get fuzzy between-class and within-class scatter matrices. The membership degree is obtained by combining the measures of features of samples data. In addition, the effects of employing different measures is investigated from a pure mathematical point of view, and the t-test statistical method is used for comparing the robustness of the learning algorithm. Experimental results on ORL and FERET face databases show that KFDA/QR and KFDA/SVD are more effective and feasible than Fuzzy Discriminant Analysis (FDA) and Kernel Discriminant Analysis (KDA) in terms of the mean correct recognition rate.

Gdy dokumenty są długie, czas ich przeglądania znacznie się wydłuża. Można by go wydatnie skrócić, gdyby istniała możliwość automatycznego generowania sensownych podsumowań (streszczeń). W artykule omawiamy wybrane algebraiczne metody służące automatycznemu wydobywaniu z tekstu jego najistotniejszych słów kluczowych oraz najistotniejszych zdań.
Text summarization is a real practical problem due to explosion of the volume of textual information available nowadays. In order to solve this problem, text summarization systems which extract brief information from a given text are created. The end user, by looking only at the summary, may decide whether the document is or is not of interest to him/her. Built summaries can have 2 fundamental forms. Firstly, extractive summarization may collect important sentences from the input text to constitute the summary. Secondly, abstractive summarization tries to capture main concepts of the text and then some new sentences, summarizing the input text, are generated. Nowadays, however, it seems that the latter approach still needs extensive works to be really useful. A summary can be extracted from a single document or multiple documents. In the paper the authors build summaries of one document only. The extension into multi-document summaries is the straightforward task in the case when a set of semantically uniform texts is summarized. Summaries may also be categorized as generic and query-based summaries. In the first case, there are generated summaries con-taining main topics of a document. In the second case, summaries contain the sentences that are related to the given queries. In the paper there are built generic summaries. Summarization systems use different approaches to determine important sentences. Here there is used semantic oriented approach based on a method known as Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA). LSA is an algebraic method that extracts meaning of words and similarity of sentences using the information about usage of the words in the context. It uses Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) for finding semantically similar words and sentences. Using the results of SVD the authors try to select best sentences (which constitute the best summary of the text). The paper is organized as follows. In Section 2 there is formulated the problem. In Section 3 there is shown how a docu-ment may be represented in a useful algebraic format. The so called Term-Sentence matrix (TSM) is used. The authors also point at some preliminary tasks necessary to be performed for successful further analysis. In Subsection 3.2 there is shortly presented an idea of LSA as based on SVD decomposition. In the last section 4 two examples of text summarizations build for both Polish and English texts are given. The two methods used differ slightly from each other. The authors' extracting key words and key sentences seems to be proper content-related summaries of the input texts.

Opis:
Singular boundary value problems (BVPs) have widespread applications in the field of engineering, chemical science, astrophysics and mathematical biology. Finding an approximate solution to a problem with both singularity and non-linearity is highly challenging. The goal of the current study is to establish a numerical approach for dealing with problems involving three-point boundary conditions. The Bernstein polynomials and collocation nodes of a domain are used for developing the proposed numerical approach. The straightforward mathematical formulation and easy to code, makes the proposed numerical method accessible and adaptable for the researchers working in the field of engineering and sciences. The priori error estimate and convergence analysis are carried out to affirm the viability of the proposed method. Various examples are considered and worked out in order to illustrate its applicability and effectiveness. The results demonstrate excellent accuracy and efficiency compared to the other existing methods.

Spectrophotometry is an analytical technique of increasing importance for the food industry, applied i.a. in the quantitative assessment of the composition of mixtures. Since the absorbance data acquired by means of a spectrophotometer are highly correlated, the problem of calibration of a spectrophotometric analyzer is, as a rule, numerically ill-conditioned, and advanced data-processing methods must be frequently applied to attain an acceptable level of measurement uncertainty. This paper contains a description of four algorithms for calibration of spectrophotometric analyzers, based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of matrices, as well as the results of their comparison - in terms of measurement uncertainty and computational complexity - with a reference algorithm based on the estimator of ordinary least squares. The comparison is carried out using an extensive collection of semi-synthetic data representative of trinary mixtures of edible oils. The results of that comparison show the superiority of an algorithm of calibration based on the truncated SVD combined with a signal-to-noise ratio used as a criterion for the selection of regularisation parameters - with respect to other SVD-based algorithms of calibration.

Time Series Analysis of Leaf Area Index (LAI) is vital to the understanding of global vegetation dynamics. The LAI time series derived from satellite observations are usually not complete and noisy due to cloud contamination and uncertainties in the retrieval techniques. In this paper, the continuity and consistency of the MODIS 8 day LAI products are improved using a method based on Caterpillar Singular Spectrum Analysis. The proposed method is compared with other standard methods: Savitzky-Golay filter, Empirical Mode Decomposition, Low Pass filtering and Asymmetric Gaussian fitting. The experiment demonstrates the smoothing and gapfilling ability of the developed method, which is more robust across the biomes both in terms of root mean square error metrics and bias metrics as compared to the standard methods.

Opis:
The presence of infragravity waves in nearshore regions can be sought in the records of both water levels and wave-driven longshore currents. For this reason, time series of such currents in close proximity to the shoreline were analysed using Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA). Simultaneously, the results obtained with this method were confronted with the output of Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), which had previously been applied to this data. The records of longshore currents were collected on a daily basis during field experiments in the autumns of 2002 and 2003 with sampling rates of 3 Hz and 0.5 Hz. This produced a large data set that allowed for the use of an advanced signal processing technique, capable of extracting patterns characteristic of low-, medium- and high-frequency bands. It provided similar evidence to that produced by DWT for the existence of infragravity waves along a dissipative coast with multiple bars. The study also demonstrated the utility of SSA for studies on coastal hydrodynamics. It also showed up the better user-friendliness of DWT in terms of pattern extraction and interpretation. On the other hand, SSA demonstrated a higher precision of pattern extraction once the DWT output was known, which is a manifestation of the synergy of the two methods when applied jointly.

W artykule przedstawiono metody określenia wrażliwych zmiennych stanu systemu elektroenergetycznego przy uwzględnieniu stochastycznego charakteru zmian obciążeń w systemie. Autorzy sugerują, że wrażliwe zmienne w systemie elektroenergetycznym powinny zostać zidentyfikowane wraz z oszacowaniem potencjalnego zakresu ich zmienności przy użyciu metod analitycznych oraz probabilistycznych.

The paper can be considered as a complement to previous papers of the authors. An insight into applied asymptotic analysis of boundary value problems in singularly perturbed domains is presented. As a result, the asymptotic expansions of eigenvalues are obtained and discussed in terms of integral attributes of the geometrical perturbations including the virtual mass tensor, polarization tensor etc. The results are presented in such a way that can be easily employed in numerical methods for shape optimization and inverse problems.

Opis:
Application of SVD to fault extraction from the machine symptom observation matrix (SOM) seems to be validated enough, especially by data taken from many real diagnostic cases. However, frequently we have situation of varying machine load during the production process, where by observed primary symptoms are influenced greatly. This concerns generalized symptoms too, so decision making process and forecasting is disturbed. But we can apply some new data smoothing procedure called singular spectrum analysis (SSA), to eliminate load influenced symptom fluctuation, and obtain the machine wear trend only. This seems to be true, as it was shown in the paper, but special care should be taken to choose smoothing approximation order properly.
Zastosowanie rozkładu SVD do wydobycia informacji o uszkodzeniu z symptomowej macierzy obserwacji (ang. SOM) wydaje się być wystarczająco uzasadnione, szczególnie dla danych pochodzących z wielu rzeczywistych przypadków diagnostycznych. Jednakże w wielu przypadkach mamy do czynienia z sytuacją zmiennych obciążeń maszyny podczas procesu produkcji, silnie wpływających na obserwowane symptomy. Dotyczy to także symptomów uogólnionych, co utrudnia proces podejmowania decyzji i prognozowania. Możemy jednak zastosować pewną nową procedurę wygładzania nazywaną analizą widma szczególnego (ang. SSA), aby wyeliminować obciążenia wpływające na fluktuacje symptomu i otrzymać tylko trend zużycia maszyny. Wydaje się to być prawdą, jak zostało pokazane w pracy, jednak z zachowaniem szczególnej uwagi w poprawnym wyborze rzędu przybliżenia w procedurze wygładzania.

The surge protection may be worth millions of dollars. This is typical price of a centrifugal compressor repair combined with additional cost of nonfunctionality of an industry employing it. This threat is normally secured by application of an antisurge systems. Typically they are activated at predefined working conditions when compressor mass flow rate approaches region affected by the surge. As a result those systems are vastly limiting its operational range usually by a desirable region where compressor attains large pressure ratio. Therefore, a modern antisurge systems are aiming at diminishing this tradeoff by reacting to the real pressure signal gathered at high frequency. This paper presents one of those methods employing singular spectrum analysis. This algorithm has not been widely used for this application, while it was shown herein that it may bring clear distinction between stable and nonstable working condition, even at presurge conditions. Hence in further perspective it may bring anti-surge protection quality, that was not met with another methods.

The article addresses the problems related to the functioning of the worldwide market of wheat and meslin. The authors identify the countries that over the past 17 years have been among the top 10 world leaders in terms of the value of export and import of wheat and meslin. The structure of wheat export by Ukrainian regions is analysed in comparison with the total export. The localisation coefficient is applied to measure the regional unevenness of the distribution of wheat export volumes and the total export by regions of the country. The modelling and forecasting of the volumes and prices of export of wheat and meslin from Ukraine are based on Singular Spectrum Analysis. The study particularly focuses on the individual components of time series, such as trend, annual, semi-annual, four-month, three-month seasonal components. The reliability of the forecast is confirmed by the calculation of the MAPE forecast error and Henry Theil’s inequality coefficient. The article proposes an algorithm for calculating the relative indicators of the structure for the individual components of the reconstructed time series, identified through the singular spectral analysis.
