Opis:
This paper draws attention to the role of nonverbal communication in the process of simultaneous interpreting. The theoretical basis is provided by the phe-nomenon of audiovisual integration: the ability of the human brain to incorporate both verbal and nonverbal signals into comprehension. Referring to previous works by F. Poyatos, S. Viaggio and K. Seeber, the author attempts to distinguish core functions of nonverbal signals in simultaneous interpreting and to analyse the model of cognitive resource footprint by K. Seeber. Additionally, theoretical and practical ramifications of taking nonverbal signals into consideration for the psychology and quality of work of simultaneous interpreters are pinpointed.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – This paper aims to examine with new empirical evidence the joint relationships between violence, income inequality, and real income per capita in a simultaneous equation framework using a worldwide sample at the country level. Design/methodology/approach – To examine the several simultaneous relationships between the variables, this study uses the Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) and Three-Stage Least Squares (3SLS) with two-way fixed effects on a linear system of regression equations. The data used for analysis are sourced from the World Bank, the SWIID inequality database, and the Penn World Table. The final sample for the estimations includes 110 countries in the period between 1994 and 2019. Findings – Based on the estimations, the results confirm a strong positive relationship between violence and income inequality. Conversely, a negative but non-robust relationship exists between violence and real income per capita. Additionally, the findings show that human capital based on years of schooling plays a critical role in reducing both inequality and violence. Research implications/limitations – The negative relationship between income and violence is sensitive to the sample size. The institutional framework characterized by high levels of democracy does not ensure by itself a reduction in violence. The SUR model is limited to the endogeneity of the variables. Instruments selected for the 3SLS are based on previous lags of the endogenous variables, no external instruments were used. Data availability also compromises extending the estimations with a greater number of controls. Originality/value/contribution – This study considers the explicit joint simultaneous endogenous behavior of income inequality, violence, and real income in a worldwide sample, which contrasts most of the traditional individual-type analysis of previous studies with limited samples. Furthermore, it provides evidence of the importance of human capital and the existence of the non-robust relationships between income and violence.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to signal the possible relationships between the simultaneous interpreter and the image in its widest sense. In this communicative situation, attention is first paid to the text of the oral presentation, the meaning of which is conveyed by the interpreter. However, this meaning is also made up of visual elements that the interpreter faces and which make the interpretation inter-semiotic and multimodal. Three different types of simultaneous interpreter/image relationships will be outlined: firstly, the whole interpreting communicative situation can become an image if remote interpretation is necessary, secondly, it is the speaker who can be understood as an image, thirdly, the speaker can refer to previously prepared images. Then, by means of a pilot study, it will be checked whether and how experienced simultaneous interpreters relate the speaker to the picture when the picture presented is not redundant with what is being said, but complements the speech. The main question is whether and how it will be verbalized. Possible ways of extending the study will also be discussed.

Opis:
Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), a carbon fiber composite material, has high specific strength and stiffness, and has attracted attention as a structural material for transport machines from the viewpoint of improving fuel efficiency through weight reduction. However, the exiting CFRP processing methods have several disadvantages such as high cost, tool wear due to formation of hard chips during cutting, and occurrence of delamination that degrades machining accuracy. These limitations impede the practical application of CFRP. The purpose of this study is to propose a low cost and high precision drilling method “simultaneous cutting” by stacking the different materials with CFRP. Until now, high precision hole drilling has been studied by stacking titanium on CFRP. Because CFRP and titanium parts are joined by bolts in aircraft and so on. However, in this study, an inexpensive and easy to obtain acrylic resin plate was selected as a stacking material to focus on CFRP hole drilling. On the other hand, acrylic resin plate was used for CFRP hole drilling as a waste material. As a result, it was found that the thrust force was reduced by drilling the hole with stacking CFRP between two acrylic resin plates. Furthermore, the occurrence of delamination was suppressed at both the entry and exit sides of the hole.

Opis:
The problem of position and orientation estimation for an active vision sensor that moves with respect to the full six degrees of freedom is considered. The proposed approach is based on point features extracted from RGB-D data. This work focuses on efficient point feature extraction algorithms and on methods for the management of a set of features in a single RGB-D data frame. While the fast, RGB-D-based visual odometry system described in this paper builds upon our previous results as to the general architecture, the important novel elements introduced here are aimed at improving the precision and robustness of the motion estimate computed from the matching point features of two RGB-D frames. Moreover, we demonstrate that the visual odometry system can serve as the front-end for a pose-based simultaneous localization and mapping solution. The proposed solutions are tested on publicly available data sets to ensure that the results are scientifically verifiable. The experimental results demonstrate gains due to the improved feature extraction and management mechanisms, whereas the performance of the whole navigation system compares favorably to results known from the literature.

Opis:
Suppose there are a number of decision variables linearly related to a set of outcome variables. There are at least as many outcome variables as the number of decision variables since all decisions are outcomes by themselves. The quality of outcome is evaluated by a utility function. Given desired values for all outcome variables, decision making reduces to “solving” the system of linear equations with respect to the decision variables; the solution being defined as decision variable values such that maximize the utility function. This paper proposes a family of additively separable utility functions which can be defined by setting four intuitive parameters for each outcome variable: the desired value of the outcome, the lower and the upper limits of its admissible interval, and its importance weight. The utility function takes a nonnegative value within the admissible domain and negative outside; permits gradient methods for maximization; is designed to have a small dynamic range for numerical computation. Small examples are presented to illustrate the proposed method.

Opis:
A loss function is proposed for solving box-constrained inverse problems. Given causality mechanisms between inputs and outputs as smooth functions, an inverse problem demands to adjust the input levels to make the output levels as close as possible to the target values; box-constrained refers to the requirement that all outcome levels remain within their respective permissible intervals. A feasible solution is assumed known, which is often the status quo. We propose a loss function which avoids activation of the constraints. A practical advantage of this approach over the usual weighted least squares is that permissible outcome intervals are required in place of target importance weights, facilitating data acquisition. The proposed loss function is smooth and strictly convex with closed-form gradient and Hessian, permitting Newton family algorithms. The author has not been able to locate in the literature the Gibbs distribution corresponding to the loss function. The loss function is closely related to the generalized matching law in psychology.

Opis:
This note points out that a utility maximization procedure proposed in an earlier paper may be reduced to the least squares. The utility function is asymmetric in the sense that for each cue its ideal value and the permissible range are assigned in such a way that the ideal is not necessarily at the center of the range, like "a beer of 350 ml would be ideal, but acceptable if within [100, 500]". A practical consequence of the observation is that very little programming will be needed to deploy the utility maximization since software for the least squares is widely available.
