Opis:
An experiment in cooling of gas turbine nozzle guide vanes was modelled numerically with a conjugate viscousflow and solid-material heat conduction solver. The nozzle vanes were arranged in a cascade and operated in highpressure, hot-temperature conditions, typical for first turbine stage in a flow of controlled-intensity, artificiallygenerated turbulence. The vane cooling was internal, accomplished by 10 channels in each vane with cooling-air flow. Numerical simulations of the experiment were conducted applying two turbulence models of the k-omega family: k-omega-SST and Transition SST implemented in the ANSYS Fluent solver. Boundary conditions for the simulations were set based on conditions of experiment: total pressures and total temperature on inlet to cascade, static pressure on the outlet of the cascade and heat flux on the surface of cooling channels. The values of heat flux on the surface of cooling channels were evaluated based on Nusselt numbers obtained from experiment and varied in time until steadystate conditions were obtained. Two test cases, one with subcritical outlet flow, and another one, with supercritical outlet flow were simulated. The result of experiment – distributions of pressure, surface temperature, and heat transfer coefficients on the vane external surface were compared to results of numerical simulations. Sensitivity of the vane surface temperatures and heat transfer coefficients to turbulence models and to boundary-condition values of parameters of turbulence models: turbulence energy and specific dissipation of turbulence energy was also studied.

Opis:
In the present paper results of the studies devoted to computer simulations of dielectric response of electroceramics in a frequency domain as well as analysis of the experimental data are given. As an object of investigations BiNbO4-based microwave ceramics was taken. Simulations of the hypothetical impedance response of the ceramic system were performed under assumption of the brick-layer model. A strategy for analysis and modelling of the impedance data for microwave electroceramics was discussed. On the base of the discussed strategy modelling of the dielectric response of BiNbO4 ceramics was performed with the electric equivalent circuit method. The Voigt’s and Maxwell’s circuits were taken as electric models. Parameters of the electric components of the circuits were determined and related to parameters of the ceramic object under study. It was found that fitting quality was good and changed within the range χ2 = 6.78 × 10-4 – 6.77 × 10-5 depending on the model.

Opis:
There is presented the practical application example of the theory of constraints, in the paper. In all enterprises from engineering industry, the main problem connected with realization of production orders are the constraint existing in every production system. Searching and increasing of the bottleneck (constraint) should be the first step in situation, when exist necessity to increase production. There are described principles and stages of the production system improvement, which are based on the mentioned above theory. In the paper, there is demonstrated that the computer simulation is very useful aiding tool for finding constraints and facilitating the analysis of different proposed changes in production systems.

The paper presents the analysis results of the fan system using hardware/software multi-technology language VHDL-AMS (IEEE 1076.1) and System Vision design platform. The analysis was performed in the time domain for the selected sweep values of the component parameters. The sensitivity analysis was used to vary selected, user-specified percentage of rated values . The parameters were arranged according to the effect on the selected waveforms. The further analysis was performed using statistic method Monte Carlo (MC) and Worst Case (WCA). Results of simulation are presented and the advantage of MC simulation over sensitivity analysis was emphasized. Post processing measurement tools of MC results and calculator with the standard mathematical operators and advanced statistic functions were used to picture the system performance versus run number and to determine correlations between devices parameters and system performance. The obtained characteristics enable the designer to evaluate the reliability of the system when manufactured in the large scale and to state the worst case limits for the project.

In a previous work [Pasini L and Sabatini S 2016 TASK Quart. 20 (1) 9], we described a technique that allows a specific system of urban traffic to be associated to a description file system, called Model.dat. This file contains a list of data objects that are defined in the library [Pasini L and Feliziani S 2013 TASK Quart. 17 (3) 155] and that form the architecture model of a vehicular traffic system. This model turns out to be a network of queuing systems. In this work, we illustrate how we adapted the old procedure to study a new urban traffic system. Moreover, through a new tracking procedure, we illustrate how we developed a graphic simulation able to reinterpret the data from the simulation of the queuing networks model, in order to make it easier to check the effectiveness of the simulator and to have a graphical way to analyze the data.

Opis:
Mathematical models of activated sludge process are well recognised and widely implemented by researchers since 1980's. There is also numerous software available for modelling and simulation of activated sludge plants, but practical application of those tools is rather limited. One of the main reasons for such a situation is a difficult process of model calibration the requires extended data sets collected at investigated plant. Those data are usually not included in a standard plant monitoring plan. In the paper the problem of model calibration with the data sets derived from standard monitoring plan is discussed with a special regard to simulation objectives and data availability. The research was conducted with operational data from Białystok Wastewater Treatment Plant. The model of the plant was based on Activated Sludge Model No.3 developed by IWA Task Group and implemented in ASIM simulator. Calibration and validation of the model gave promising results, but further applications should be carefully considered, mainly due to uncertainties underlying input data.

The enhancement of surgical simulation tools is an important research study, to assist in the assessment and feedback of medical training practice. In this research, the Spring Tensor Model (STEM) has been used for laparoscopic end-effector navigation through obstacles and high-risk areas. The modelling of the surgical trainer as part of the laparoscopic simulator seeks to emulate the physical environment as a virtualized representation in the integrated infrastructure. Combining sensor network framework paradigms to a surgical knowledge-based construct demonstrates how STEM can enhance medical practice. The architectural hybridisation of the training framework has enabled the adaptation of STEM modelling techniques for a simulated laparoscopic training methodology. The primary benefit of the architecture is that this integration strategy has resulted in a seamless transition of the heuristic framework to be applied to surgical training.

The dairy industry faces many challenges when compared to other sectors. On the supply side, due to the nature of the raw material, large inventories are not applied; during the manufacturing process, continuous production is highly sensitive to any sort of unplanned disruption; on the demand side, the market dictates the bulk powder commodity prices. In response to the growth in competition, dairy organizations’ strategy must incorporate technology into their daily processes in order to become more efficient, profitable and sustainable. To achieve desired levels of improvement, Modelling and Simulation (M&S) has been increasing in popularity in the decision-making process. Using a dairy company as a case study, this paper has highlighted the potential for M&S to be used as a powerful strategic tool for decision-making processes.

Opis:
The article presents a method for determining the content and temperature on the basis of spectra from remote measurements. The technique uses measurements of a high resolution radiation spectrum that allows the visibility of the individual rotational lines of gases such as CO₂, used here in the range of 2470-2495 cm¯¹. At the same time a new algorithm is applied of pre-processing the spectrum, involving the use of multiple ratios of intensity at several wavenumbers as input to an inverse model based on neural networks. Due to it, the dimensionality of the input can significantly be reduced. Additionally, the data interpreted do not have to be measured in units of spectral radiance. Thus only the calibration of the sensitivity of the spectrometer at various wavelengths is required. The neural models were constructed on the basis of data from the simulation. The proposed method works with a uniform layer of radiating gas for determining the temperature and CO₂ content. For a non-uniform layer it is possible to determine the line-of-sight temperature profile and average gas content. The method can be extended to different spectral ranges and to other gases present in substantial quantities in the exhaust gases of various processes.

The paper develops a new methodology of FE modelling and simulation of the bridge - track - moving train system with the use of CAE systems. The KNI 140070 viaduct of span length 14.40 m, located on the Polish Central Main Line, has been selected. The modernized track contains: 60E1 main rails equipped with Vossloh 300-1 fasteners, 60E1 side rails with SB3 fasteners, B 320 U60 sleepers, crushed stone ballast, approach RC slabs. A KTX (Korea Train eXpress) high-speed train, being a modification of a TGV train, is taken into consideration. A methodology of physical and numerical modelling of the viaduct, the track and the train was developed using Altair HyperMesh and LS-PrePost software. The FE model of a bridge superstructure consists of 4-node shell elements (main beams) and 8-node 48 DOF solid elements (reinforced concrete platform). RAIL TRACK and RAIL TRAIN modules available in LS-Dyna system were applied for simulating the train — trach interaction. Hughes-Liu beam elements were used for the rail modelling. Rail fastenings were simulated using one-dimensional discrete spring and damper elements. Carbodies, bogieframes and wheelsets were considered as rigid bodies and they were modelled using shell and beam elements. Cylindrical and revolute constrained joints and discrete springs and dampers were applied to connect all components of the FE model of rail-vehicles. The exemplary simulation of transient vibrations of the bridge - trach -train system has been made for service velocity 300 km/h. Contours of displacement and stress and selected time histories for displacements, accelerations and stresses, created in LS-PrePost and HyperView software, have been analysed.

Opis:
The paper presents a methodology of finite element (FE) modelling and simulation of the bridge – track – moving high-speed train system using CAE systems. Two composite (reinforce-concrete – steel) bridges were considered. The span length was equal to 15 and 21 meters, respectively. Bridges selected for the study belong to the proposed series of bridges with the span length of 15 to 27 meters stepped by 3 meters. Full symmetry of the bridges was assumed. RC platform was homogenized since the rebars were distributed quasi-uniformly in the specified platform sections. The FE model of a bridge superstructure consisted of 4-node shell elements (main beams) and 8-node 48 DOF solid elements (reinforced concrete platform). RAIL_TRACK and RAIL_TRAIN LS-DYNA’s modules were applied for simulating the moving train – track interaction. Ballasted track with the rectilinear rail-line axis was taken into consideration. German ICE-3 train running at velocity of 200–300 km/h was selected as a representative for the study. All mass components of the train FE model were treated as rigid bodies. Symmetric vibrations of the train units were assumed with respect to the main longitudinal vertical plane of symmetry of the system. Nodal displacement and longitudinal normal stress in shell elements were registered during the FE analysis. The results were depicted in the form of time histories for selected velocities. In addition, extreme values of vertical deflections and normal stress were compiled and presented a function of train velocity. It allowed to assess the dynamic response of the bridge depending on its span length. Contours of resultant displacement for the RC platform was also presented.
