Opis:
The paper presents the results of numerical calculations, with the finite element method in the ABAQUS program environment, of the vibratory shot peening process with loose peening elements. The behaviour of shot peening elements was analysed in the kinematic aspect. The impact of the initial deployment of vibratory shot peening elements on their behaviour during processing was investigated, including the displacement, velocity, acceleration and the number of collisions. The way of determining the effectiveness of the processing with the vibratory shot peening was illustrated.

Opis:
Conventional shot peening (SP) is cheap surface treatment widely used to enhance fatigue life of mechanical components [3,4]. Basically, it is shooting small particles (shots) on the surface of the sample. However, the process itself is so complex that a lot of companies are not able to optimally employ it due to the amount of parameters that must be controlled all at the same time. The duplex process consists in two stages of shot-peening treatment. The first one consist of shot-peening with spherical cast steel shots or cut wire shots. During the second stage the samples processed in stage one were subject to shot-peening with glass beads. In this work, RSA-501 aluminium alloy was shot peened using shots of different material and diameter and tested using a measurement of residual stresses and surface roughness. Tests and studies conducted so far on RSA-501 aluminium alloy demonstrate that bombardment by a treatment medium in the form of glass beads or shots of various shapes and diameters induces permanent plastic deformation of the surface layer. The roughness achieved after the shot-peening process was determined for each treatment medium. The largest value of Ra parameter was achieved for cut wire shots and this result is consistent with the above-mentioned theoretical knowledge. This medium is the most aggressive one to the surface being treated primarily due to the sharp edges of shots. The duplex process was successful in obtaining higher values of compressive stresses in surface layer than values achievable in conventional single-stage shot peening process.

Opis:
The bead blasting process is widespread in both the automotive and aerospace industry and is performed in order to improve the fatigue strength of various components. Bead blasting is a cold plastic forming process during which the surface of the material processed is hit by small, hard particles consisting of steel pellets, bearing balls or glass beads. It increases the hardness of the outer layer and establishes compression stresses inside it, which is why this processing is often used to improve fatigue strength. Contrary to other peening methods, bead blasting does not result in a reduction in the height of the processed surface’s unevenness in most cases. Shot peening changes the residual tensile stresses into residual compression stresses, thanks to which, the lifetime of the parts processed is extended and their carrying capacity is increased. The double shot peening process proposed by the authors consists in a two-stage bead blasting process. The first stage consists in blasting with round cast steel pellets, pellets cut from wire or cast iron pellets. During the second stage the same samples underwent glass bead blasting. The tests conducted on the RSA-501 aluminum alloy indicate that as a result of the processing medium’s impact in the form of glass beads or pellets of different diameter and shape, a permanent plastic deformation of the material surface occurs. On the basis of the obtained results it is possible to infer that the choice of parameters of both conventional shot peening and the double shot peening determine the impact thereof on the material’s mechanical properties. Thanks to the application of the double shot peening process there is a noticeable decrease in value of the Ra parameter, by about 40% on average. When analyzing the compressive stress results it is possible to state that after the first blasting process the value of stress was increasing when moving deeply into the sample from its surface, while after the glass bead blasting the value of compressive stress was significantly higher already near the surface. Double shot peening results in an increase in the value of compressive stresses by 40-50% when compared to conventional blasting.

The paper presents results of the wear tests of chain wheels made of austempered ductile iron with various content of residual austenite. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the impact of the dynamic surface treatment (shot peening) on wear properties of surface layers of the chain wheels tested that were subjected to the action of quartz abrasive. Apart from determining the value of the abrasive wear, examinations of the magnetic phase content in the microstructure were carried out and plots of hardness of the surface layer as a function of the distance from the surface and microstructure of the materials were prepared. Based on the results, the following was found: an increase in the abrasive wear and a reduction in the hardness of the surface layer of chain wheels subjected to shot peening, as well as reduction of susceptibility to negative action of the shot for cast irons with the structure of upper ausferrite.

This article presents the methodology of shot peening gears’ parameters selection used in agricultural tractor transmission. The gears made of steel have been treated with 21NiCrMo2 thermal-chemical consisting of carburization to the depth of 0.8 mm and subsequently hardened. The hardness of the side teeth surface after hardening was 58 HRC. The same process of thermo chemical was used for flat samples with dimensions 120×12×5 mm. Prepared samples were divided into two series. First shot peening was treated with spherical pellet with a varied diameter from 0.4 mm to 2.5 mm. For second series samples additional treatment of shot peening was not carried out. Then micro-hardness, roughness and longitudinal and transverse residual stresses were measured. As a result of the studies, there were selected parameters of shot peening, exerting the greatest influence on favourable residual stresses distribution in the surface layer of material and an increase in microhardness. At the same time, particular attention was paid to the morphology of samples surfaces after shot peening. There were rejected the parameters of shot peening, which caused damage to the surface in the form of visible cracks and craters. Based on the analysis presented in this article there were selected shot peening parameters, which will be applied during the additional dynamic surface processing of gears, used in the tractor’s drive system.

This article presents the research results of roughness and topography of the surface of Inconel 718 nickel alloy after shot peening. The evaluation of stereometric properties of the surface layer of the examined material was performed based on the amplitude, height and Abbott-Firestone curve parameters. The shot peening was carried out on the impulse shot peening stand. The impact energy Ez, distance between the traces xs and the ball diameter dk were changed in the range: Ez = 60 ÷ 240 mJ, xs = 0,15 ÷ 0,5 mm, dk = 3,95 ÷ 12,45 mm. The T8000 RC 120-140 device of the Hommel-Etamic company, along with the software, was used for measuring the surface roughness and for determining the material bearing curve. As a result of the machining, the surface roughness was reduced and the selected functional parameters were improved.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of wear tests of shot-peened and not shot-peened cast steels used in the mining machinery industry, in particular in the construction of chain drums for armoured face conveyors. Wear tests were carried out in the conditions corresponding to the real operating conditions of armoured face conveyors during drifting work in rocks such as sandstone. The operating factors subjected to the analyses included the presence of quartz abrasive and the impact of external dynamic forces. On the basis of the wear tests as well as the microhardness and microstructure examinations performed, it has been found that the action of an additional dynamic force has a synergistic impact on the process of abrasive wear in loose quartz abrasive. It has been further found that the value of abrasive wear of chain wheels operated in the conditions of a combined action of abrasive and a dynamic force depends on whether the area of mating of wheels with the chain was shot-peened or not before the wear tests – an increase in the abrasive wear was observed for the wheels made of cast steel subjected to shot peening in the area of mating with the chain. Lower resistance to abrasive wear of the cast steels subjected to shot peening before the wear tests could result from the formation of cracks in the surface layer caused by the action of shot.

This study presents the results of tests on impact of vibratory and rotational shot peening of the Ti6A12Mo2Cr titanium alloy onto the processed object surface roughness and surface layer microhardness. The external surfaces of ring-shaped samples were shot peened. The preceding process consisted of turning with a cubic boron nitride blade knife. Steel beads, having a diameter of 6 mm, were used as a processing medium. The variable parameters of shot peening were vibrator amplitude and shot peening time. The range of recommended technological parameters for vibratory and rotational shot peening was determined. As a result of shot peening, the surface roughness could be reduced by approximately 4 times and the surface layer could be hardened to the depth of approximately 0.4 mm.

Opis:
This paper concerns issues related to the development of designs of stabilizer bars for new motor vehicle models. It involves not only the designing of a stabilizer bar with the shape required by the manufacturer, but also the preparation of bending and heat treatment processes as well as the performance of strength and fatigue tests. In the prototype development phase, the simulations techniques (FEM) may be used to assess the design. The article contains a detailed analysis of a stabilizer bar designated with the DC 218 VA symbol. Performed numerical strength and fatigue calculations showed that the developed stabilizer bar design with the desired shape did not achieve the required number of fatigue cycles. It was also proven at the test stand by testing a prototype stabilizer bar. Therefore, it was suggested to supplement the technological process with an additional shot peening operation whose main aim was to reduce the length of microcracks on the stabilizer bar’s surface. This effect was confirmed during comparative metallographic tests of not shot – peened and shot – peened stabilizer bars. After shot peening, the analysed stabilizer bar reached a fatigue strength which exceeded the limits set by the manufacturer.
