The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of short-term plyometric depth jump training on sand interposed with 48 hours or 72 hours of rest between training sessions on power type muscular adaptations in recreationally physical active men. Fifteen collegiate physical active men, who were familiar with plyometric exercise, participated in this study and were randomly divided into 2 groups: plyometric training with 48 h (PT48, N=7) and 72 h (PT72, N=8) of rest between training sessions. Pre and post training on sand, participants were measured in vertical jump (VJ), standing long jump (SLJ), agility t Test (TT), 20 and 40 m sprints, and one repetition maximum leg press (1RMLP). The plyometric training program on sand was applied during 6 weeks, 2 sessions per week, with 5 sets of 20 repetitions depth jump exercise from 45 cm box height. After completing 6 weeks training period, the PT48 and PT72 groups showed significant improvement in all performance tests (p<0.05), with statistically significant differences between treatments in TT and 40 m sprint time. With regard to significant differences in TT and 40 m sprint for PT72 compared with PT48 and greater improvements for PT72 in all tests, it can be recommend that coaches, strength and conditioning professionals apply 72 h rest between plyometric training sessions when sand surface was used.

In this article, on the basis of questionnaire data collected for other purposes, the Authors want to show the consequences of various methods of shortening of tests and what may result from such an action for diagnosticians, researchers and examined individuals. The research aim of the work is to show the best method of shortening of the scale of questionnaires. Will shortening of a questionnaire according to different statistical techniques bring the same results? Will the quality of shortened scales be comparable? Is any of statistical techniques better for shortening of the scale of a questionnaire? The obtained results suggest a poorly controlable effect of the methods of questionnaire shortening. Moreover creating a short version on the basis of the results collected with the use of the full version leads to obtaining a tool with unknown diagnostic and psychometric properties.

The aim of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scale to measure plyometric exercise intensity during low (L), moderate (M) and high (H) intensity. Fourteen physically active students (age; 21±1.1 y, height; 178.7±8.2 cm and body mass; 74.6±9.1 kg) volunteered to participate in this study and performed each intensity once separated with 24 h recovery. The H consisted of 1 set of 5 repetitions at 90% of the subject’s vertical jump height (VJH). The M consisted of 10 repetitions at 70% VJT, and the L consisted of 1 set of 15 repetitions at 50% VJH. RPE was measured following the completion each intensity using 0-10 Borg RPE scale. Data was analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and the level of significant was set at p < 0.05. The results indicated increases in RPE following enhancing exercise intensity (p < 0.05). Performing fewer repetitions at a higher intensity was perceived to be more difficult than performing more repetitions at a lower intensity. The results of the current investigation revealed that the RPE method is effective in monitoring different plyometric exercise and training intensities and it can be recommend that strength and conditioning professionals and athletes use the RPE method based on the effectiveness tool for monitoring their plyometric exercise and training sessions at different intensities.

The western frame-margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin provides good case studies for structural evolution of the fold-and-thrust belt. This study is concerned with tectonic junctions taking place on the Late Variscan front of the Moravosilesian Fold Zone and coal basin. Clues of evolution of fold-and-thrust belt were reconstructed on the base of six cross-sections and using balancing procedure to calculate the shortening. These structural cross-sections illustrated the two principal positive and negative inversion processes of Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The fold shortening varies in range of 25 up to 30% and in low range of 4 up to 18%. The thrust shortening is contrary to fold shortening and changed range of about 10% up to 50%. In the central part of fold-and-thrust belt summarised shortening is 55%, which gradually decreases northward up to 35% and southward up to 30%.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate some of the formal characteristics of the genre of the short text message, with a special focus on the concept of language economy, which typically underlies the use of this mode of communication. The subject of analysis are text messages in two languages, English and Polish, which are compared in terms of the methods of text shortening used by the two language systems. The elements studied include word clippings, vowel deletion, word-letter substitution, word-number substitution, spelling simplification, and pronoun deletion. The aim is to establish the preferred options in the two languages and identify reasons for such choices.

Introduction: The objective of the study was to assess the flexibility of the hamstring muscles and their relationship with the position of the spine, shoulder and pelvic girdles in individual planes in boys training football.Material and methods: The study included 28 boys aged 10-14, training football 3 times a week for at least 2 years. The subjects were divided into two groups: correct bilateral flexibility of the hamstring muscles, bilateral shortening of the hamstring muscles. Body height and weight were measured and BMI was calculated. The three-dimensional position of the trunk was examined using the Zebris pointer ultrasound system. The passive straight-leg-raising test was used to assess the flexibility of the hamstring muscles. Results: 32% of people were diagnosed with the correct length of both hamstring muscles, 57% had shortened muscles in both limbs. Mean values determining the depth of thoracic kyphosis indicated its deepening in each of the groups, however, lower values were recorded in boys with reduced flexibility of the hamstring muscle mass. This group was also characterised by a better balance of the trunk in the sagittal plane. The average depth of lumbar lordosis in both groups was within the normal range. In the frontal plane, in both groups of footballers there was a tendency to lift the left shoulder (more frequent in the group with normal flexibility), the pelvis on the left side and shift the trunk to the right. Conclusion: Shortening of the hamstring muscles is common in boys who train football, but no evidence of a relationship between the limited flexibility of these muscles and the position of the trunk was found.

Opis:
This study focuses on the production and perception of English words with a fortis vs. lenis obstruent in the syllable coda. The contrast is mostly cued by the duration of the preceding vowel, which is shorter before fortis than before lenis sounds in native speech. In the first experiment we analyzed the production of 10 Czech speakers of English and compared them to two native controls. The results showed that the Czech speakers did not sufficiently exploit duration to cue the identity of the word-final obstruent. In the second experiment we manipulated C and V durations in target words to transplant the native ratios onto the Czech-accented speech, enhancing the fortis-lenis contrast, and vice versa. 108 listeners took part in a word-monitoring task in which reaction times were measured. The hypothesized advantage to items in which the target word (with a fortis or lenis obstruent) was semantically congruent with the following context was not confirmed, and subsequent analyses showed that the words’ frequency of use and the collocations they enter into strongly affect speech processing and correlate to a large degree with the reaction times.

Purpose: One inconvenience in finding experimental evidence for the relationship between potential elastic energy and vertical jump height is the difficulty of estimating the value of the stored potential elastic energy. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present a simple method of estimating the potential elastic energy stored by lowering the center of mass during the countermovement phase of a vertical jump. Methods: The research was conducted on 30 able-bodied male university students (age: 20 years, body height: 183.1 ± 7.9 cm, body mass: 80.3 ± 10.4 kg). Each participant performed 10 single countermovement jumps with arms akimbo to maximal height. Measurements employed a Kistler force plate. The value of potential elastic energy was estimated based on the curve of dependence of the ground reaction force on the vertical displacement of the jumper’s center of mass. Results: The mean value (±SD) of potential elastic energy collected due to lowering of the center of mass during the countermovement phase of a vertical jump was 183 ± 69 J. 24.3% of this value can be considered the part of the potential elastic energy (44 ± 21 J) that comes from the transformation of kinetic energy. The total change in gravitational potential energy due to lowering the center of mass was 240 ± 58 J. Conclusions: This estimation of potential elastic energy is only general and rough. However, certain estimations of potential elastic energy may offer some insight into the phenomenon relating vertical quasi-stiffness and the ability to store potential elastic energy with vertical jump height.

Opis:
This study aimed to explore the effect of fatigue on the biomechanical contribution of the lower extremity joints during a typical stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) task. Methods: 15 male athletes completed drop jump (DJ) under pre- and post-fatigue. Vicon motion capture system and 3D Kistler force plates were used to collect kinematics and ground reaction force data simultaneously. Results: Under fatigue condition, 1) the DJ height decreased; the touchdown angle of knee and ankle reduced and the range of motion increased; 2) the maximum push-off moment and power of knee was reduced; 3) the stiffness of knee, ankle, and legs was reduced; 4) the energy generation and the net energy of the ankle decreased; 5) the energy contribution of knee decreased during the eccentric phase. Conclusions: Fatigue altered biomechanical contribution of the lower extremity joints by changing the movement pattern during DJ. The control ability of the knee and ankle were decreased. Eventually, the jump performance was reduced. In addition, the decrease of stiffness as well as the energy contribution of these joints can be used as sensitive indices to evaluate the performance of DJ after fatigue.

The deep dormancy of the Prunus species seeds is caused by the presence of germination inhibi- tors, mainly abscisic acid (ABA) – in the endocarp, the seed coat and endosperm, and in the embryo. As a consequence, the removal of the endocarp, the seed coat together with the endosperm increases the num- ber of germinated seeds. The effect of different treatments of seeds of three peach cultivars – ‘Madison’, ‘Elberta’ and ‘Rakoniewicka’, and of three apricot cultivars – M II‑42, ‘Bella’ and ‘Somo’, were assessed in terms of seed germination and the growth of obtained young seedlings. Seed treatments involved different duration of stratification period at 5°C and removing endocarp, seed coat with endosperm and the part of cotyledons of the embryo. The best seed/embryo germination, about 96% for the peach cultivars and practically 100% for the apricot cultivars, was obtained by stratifying seeds for 90 days and then removing the seed coat together with the endosperm and subjecting the extracted embryos to a temperature of 20°C. The seedlings obtained from the seeds treated this way have shown good growth. Using these treatments, it was possible to obtain a larger number of apricot and peach seedlings, and thus increase the breeding efficiency of these species.

Opis:
The 2015 Pope Francis’s process reform concerns simplification and shortening of canonical adjudication on the nullity of marriage by the Church Courts. Obviously, this state does not mean that the aforementioned reform forgets about the important attribute of marriage, i.e. its indissolubility; to the contrary, in his pastoral report on judicial power every diocese bishop should ensure that in this delicate matter there will not have place any reform of laxism. Thus, current adjudication of marriage nullity cannot lose the truth about the contested marriage. Because every judgement given by a judge must be based on moral certainty that is a foundation of every fair judgement, as it has been and is highlighted in the Magisterium of the Roman Bishops. The analysed fragment of the current reform of the process canon law clearly brings attention to the fact that dates should be carefully and accurately observed in the marriage nullity process. Here, in some cases, it may be possible that there will have to be made a change in mentality concerning application of the process law. Therefore, it is worth to invoke a known aphorism that teaches that a delayed justice is a negated justice (Montesquieu). Although, the Pope Francis’s process reform was made due to pastoral motifs, it has decisively influenced the marriage nullification adjudication canonical process in terms of its simplification and shortening. However, it should motivate the Church judiciary employees to be faithful in respecting the new law in the perspective of a common good. Moreover, in the perspective of accurate observance of the process dates, it should also motivate all the Church courts employees to mutual cooperation, so that the current Church process is closer to the believers, as this was one of the foundations of its reform.

Understanding of biomechanics is important in performance development since each skill has a fundamental mechanical structure. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in lower limb kinematics during table tennis forehand loop between superior players (SP) and intermediate players (IP). Thirteen male players as superior and thirteen as intermediate participated in this test. A VICON motion analysis system and a Novel Pedar insole plantar pressure measurement system were used to record kinematic and contact area data, respectively. Participants were asked to execute single forehand loop against topspin ball with maximal power. Key findings were that SP showed significantly larger hip flexion and knee external rotation at backward-end and larger hip internal rotation and extension at forward-end compared with IP. Contact areas at both events were larger for SP. In addition, SP showed significantly larger joints angular changing rate during forward swing at the ankle and hip. Results indicated that SP possessed better ability of using lower limb drive in forehand loop.

This method is well known to alleviate inter-symbol interference in time hopping UWB systems. The validity of this method is applied to shorten the impulse response of the effective UWB channels and, therefore, reduce the complexity of the rake receiver. Results show a very promising advantage compared to partial rake (P-Rake), selective-rake (S-Rake) and optimal maximum shortening signal-to-noise ratio methods.

For development of zero trans baking shortenings enzymatic interesterification was applied. Both immobilized (Novozym 435, Lipozyme RM IM, Lipase PS “Amano” IM) and native (Lipase A “Amano” 12, Lipomod TM 34P) enzymes were applied as biocatalysts. Palm stearin was explored as a source of palmitic acid. The immobilized enzymes formed new asymmetric triacylglycerols containing palmitic acid. The interesterification process produced the zero trans fats with the solid fat content profiles closely matching those of the commercial baking shortening. Not only did the novel structured lipids have comparable physical properties with the commercial baking shortening, but also offered additional health benefits. Thus enzymatic interesterification with immobilized lipases offered great potential in production of fats with expected properties.
Szorteningi piekarskie zero trans otrzymywano metodą przeestryfikowania enzymatycznego. Katalizatorami reakcji były zarówno enzymy immobilizowane (Novozym 435, Lipozyme RM IM, Lipase PS “Amano” IM), jak i natywne (Lipase A “Amano” 12, Lipomod TM 34P). Źródłem kwasu palmitynowego była stearyna palmowa. W lipidach strukturyzowanych powstających w obecności lipaz immobilizowanych występowały nowe niesymetryczne triacyloglicerole zawierające w cząsteczkach kwas palmitynowy. W wyniku przeestryfikowania otrzymano nowe tłuszcze zero trans o profilach zawartości fazy stałej zbliżonych do handlowego szorteningu piekarskiego przygotowanego z dodatkiem tłuszczów częściowo uwodornionych.

The purpose of this study was to investigate soleus muscle activation during different phases of drop jump performed at submaximal levels of volitional effort and drop height magnitude. Methods: Fifteen professional volleyball players with minimum of eight years of experience in jumping activities participated in the study. Experimental protocol involved executing submaximal drop jumps at three levels of volitional effort (i.e., 65, 80 and 95% of the maximal height of jump). All submaximal drop jumps were done from three drop heights (20, 40 and 60 cm). The soleus muscle activation was monitored during four jump phases: pre-activation phase before touchdown, early contact phase upon touchdown, early and late push-off phase. Results: The results indicate that volitional effort level did not change the muscle activation during pre activation and early contact phase, but only in early and late push-off phase ( p ≤ 0.05). Conversely, it was observed that muscle activation during all phases of drop jump was adapted to the increased intensity of the external load caused by increasing of drop height magnitude ( p ≤ 0.01). Conclusions: The findings of the present study suggested that soleus muscle activation has selective responses to internal load (i.e., volitional effort level) and external load (i.e., drop height magnitude) intensities when drop jump is executing with submaximal effort.
