Opis:
Service speed of a ship in real weather conditions is a basic design parameter. Forecasting of this speed at preliminary design stage is made difficult by the lack of simple but at the same accurate models of forces acting upon a ship sailing on a preset shipping route. The article presents a model for calculating forces and moment on plane rudder, useful for forecasting of ship service speed at preliminary stages of ship design.

Opis:
A lightering operation is a type of Ship-To-Ship (STS) operation where two ships are together in open waters and transfer the cargo e.g. crude oil, LNG. High skills and experience are required by the human operators as no relevant equipment for determining the relative speeds and distances with sufficient accuracies has been implemented. The officer in charge of an STS lightering takes the decision on adequate maneuvering orders based on predominantly visual observations during the final approach. Landing on all fenders simultaneously is an objective in order to minimize ship-fender contact forces, but this is rather difficult to achieve in practice even in calm sea due to the effect of hydrodynamic interaction when the ships are closing in. Furthermore, currents that are present in the lightering zone add to the operational complexity. A field measurement experiment has been carried out with a Velocity Information GPS (VI-GPS) system installed onboard a ferry approaching port for berthing which is similar to an STS lightering. The paper proposes to apply VI-GPS as input sensor to a decision-support and guidance system aiming to provide accurate velocity information to the officer in charge of an STS operation. It is argued that DOP of VI-GPS is related to the velocity error.

One of the major activities during Ship to Ship (STS) transfer operation at sea is to safe approach the Ship to be Lightered (SBL) which moves on a constant heading with slow speed or drifting. In the paper described the manoeuvring problem for approaching during emergency STS transfer operation with oil spill. The approach manoeuvre is considered as a sequence of navigation manoeuvres in specific navigational environment with environmental and operational constraints as well as ship dynamic performance. Additional constraints results from STS transfer operation guide and navigation practise.

The vegetable oil is well known as green fuel for diesel engines due to its low sunphur content and renewable stock. However, there are some problems raising when vegetable oil is used as fuel for diesel engines such as highly effected by cold weather, lower general efficiency, separation in layer if mixed with diesel oil and so on. To overcome that disadvantiges, the authors propose a new idea that to use a continuous fuel mixer to blend vegetable oil with diesel oil to make so called a mixed fuel supplying to diesel engines inline. In order to ensure a quality of the mixed fuel created by continuous mixer, a homogeneous testing was introduced with believable results. Then, the continuous mixer has been installed into fuel supply system of diesel engine 6LU32 at a lab of Vietnam Maritime University in terms of checking a real operation of the fuel continuous mixer with diesel engine.

One of key components in keeping a ship seaworthy is a correctly prepared cargo plan. Considering the recent cost cutting measures and reduced transportation volumes relevance of optimizing such a plan cannot be understated. Though there’s a number of studies addressing the issue none of them covers all the operational and constructional constraints necessary to factor for. This article presents an integer model that tries to address some of the constraints missed by other researches. A method for solving the model is designed and developed based on a steady-state genetic algorithm. A numerical experiment is conducted showing the method’s feasibility.

Opis:
It is well known that Weather Routing is one of the effective ship operation methods to reduce fuel consumption and many studies have been conducted to develop the effective calculation methods. However, most studies were performed focusing on the ocean going ships, and there were few studies made for coastal ships. The authors propose a minimum fuel route calculation method for coastal ships that use the precise forecasted environmental data and the propulsion performance data of the ship on actual seas. In the proposed method, we use the Dijkstra’s algorithm to calculate an optimum minimum fuel route suitable for coastal ships. Simulation study was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method using two coastal ships. As the result of study, the authors confirmed that the proposed calculation method is effective for fuel consumption reduction and is applicable for the operation of coastal merchant ships.

Few data on drag and torque on locked propeller towed in water are available in literature. Those data refer to propellers of specific geometry (number of blades, blade area, pitch and skew of blades). The estimation of drag and torque of an arbitrary propeller considered in analysis of ship resistance or propulsion is laborious. The authors collected and reviewed test data available in the literature. Based on collected data there were developed the empirical formulae for estimation of hydrodynamic drag and torque acting on locked screw propeller. Supplementary CFD computations were carried out in order to prove the applicability of the formulae to modern moderately skewed screw propellers.

The notion of a seasonal pattern of cruise ships has been used frequently, but very few authors have analysed all the features of this pattern. This article adds some new insights on this topic by analysing cruise ship activity in the three largest ports on the east coast of Adriatic Sea in 2017 and 2018. The article presents an analysis of cruise ship arrivals at the ports and compares the analysis to the established pattern in the Mediterranean, revealing the nature of the seasonal pattern for the ports analysed. In addition, two further analyses were carried out, firstly the analysis of ship size, which determines new characteristics of the seasonal pattern. The second additional analysis considered the duration of ship visit during different times of the year and determined another pattern characteristic.

Opis:
The paper presents a simulation method of analysis of the couplings between rotor blades motion and helicopter fuselage standing on ship deck at the phase of take-off or landing when whirling rotor generates thrust less than weight of the helicopter. The oscillating motion of the ship deck due to waves is considered. The physical model includes the helicopter fuselage treated as the stiff body supported by units of springs and dampers corresponding to landing gear characteristics. The rotor blades are modelled by elastic axes with distributed lumped masses of blade segments. The equations of fuselage and rotor blades motion are solved applying Runge-Kutta method. According to the Galerkin method, parameters of rotor blades motion are assumed as a resultant combination of considered blade torsion and bending eigen modes. Data of the light helicopter with three-bladed rotor are applied for the simulation of the rotorcraft behaviour aboard the ship. The calculations concerning helicopter standing on the fixed plane and on oscillating ship deck show influence of ship movement on fuselage motion and rotor blades deflections, flapping, and lead-lag motion. Moreover, simulations show influence of the side wind and control of the rotor swash-plate deflections. The additional unit of blade eigen modes and frequencies is applied to model the blade hitting to the flapping limiter, which can occur at the low rotation speed of the rotor. Temporary contact of the articulated blade with limiter changes its boundary conditions, which can rapidly increase the blade bending moments. The simulation method enables to determine conditions of safe operations of ship-borne helicopters without exceeding the limits and generating the excessive blade loads.

Nowadays shipping industry has problems such as reduction of mariners, aging of mariners, and labor expenses. To solve the problems, One Person Bridge Operation was developed as navigation supporting system. However, One Person Bridge Operation remained technological problems and one man error. Therefore, in this study, telexistence on a ship was proposed by using satellite communication. Telexistence on a ship is a concept of maneuvering between land and ship with at least two mariners such as navigation officer and helmsman. Navigation officer works on ship as usual and helmsman supports ship from land. In this paper, remote maneuvering system was developed as the first step of telexistence on a ship. For evaluating the effectiveness, ship experiment was carried out. From the result, navigation officer and helmsman could alter ship’s course to 20 degrees within 60 seconds and less than 5% overshoot in the proposed remote maneuvering system.

dimensionless arguments in dimensional functions
Opis:
The following article describes different ways for determining dimensionless arguments in dimensional functions of ship propulsion engine operation. Dimensional space has also been characterized in relation to properties it possesses. An attention has been paid to the fact that it creates Abelian group, where involution fulfils multiplication axiom by scalar, and positive numbers that belong to dimensional space create dimensionless subspace. The conception of dimensional dependence has also been explained. There are also described conditions, which should be fulfilled by dimensional quantities to be dimensionally independent. Fundamental theorems of dimensional analysis have also been characterized. There is also given the definition of dimensional function of ship propulsion engine operation concerning values and dimensional arguments. It has been explained what requirements are to be fulfilled. One can also learn what limitations are imposed on dimensional function of ship propulsion engine operation concerning dimensional homogeneity and invariance. The ways of dimensional function transformation into a numerical one have been described. In addition, some conditions have been given which must be applied at given method of dimensional function transformation. An attention has been paid to the fact that dimensionless arguments are similarity invariant as a result of transformation by the similarity method of mathematical model of ship propulsion engine operation. In this study, the ship propulsion engine performance is expressed by product of Joule and second interpreted as transfer of energy in the form of work. Identification of ship propulsion engine operation by dimensional analysis performed in terms of its usefulness for diagnosis of ship propulsion engines. The basic problem of marine diesel exploitation is the monitoring of its technical condition. Diagnosis of marine diesel propulsion increases the safety of the ship and thus protects the marine environment against pollution.

Opis:
The following paper presents load analysis of propulsion engine during ship's speed acceleration. This process is carried out after manoeuvring in order to receive, as fast as possible, exploitation speeds of the ship, achieved during the voyage. The analysis concerns direct propulsion power system of low-speed engine of constant pitch propeller. Wrong steering process of engine load changes in temporary states, can cause engine overloading, as the result of its operation on the external limiting characteristic and can end up in engine seizure. Control of engine operation is carried on through selecting of adequate setting of rotational speed governor, which for specified external conditions can result in adequate position of fuel link and the choice of adequate fuel index arm dose. Equalization of the power delivered by the engine in given conditions of work with power required by the ship’s propeller cooperating with the hull, will establish adequate rotational speed of the engine and finally the speed of the vessel. In order to speed up the sip's motion, there must occur an overflow of propeller thrust over the required thrust (resistance) and this, in turn, is connected with the necessity to ensure the engine power surplus over the power required for a given range of operation or in other words sailing speed. This article presents the working model of ship propelling system during speed acceleration and concerns mainly nonoverload running of the engine. The model described above has been verified during tests in real conditions at sea.
