The paper presents an algorithm for preliminary calculation of mass and mass centre height of hull structure of inland navigation ships. It was elaborated basing on requirements of the Rules for the Classification and Construction of Inland Navigation Ships of Polish Register of Shipping, with application of a simplified method of estimating mass of hull plating stiffeners. The algorithm deals with the dimensioning of scantlings of structural members of classical ships intended for shipping dry cargo, and dry and liquid bulk cargoes; however it does not cover ships of entirely different structural arrangement such as roll-on-roll-offships fitted with heavy decks, as the dimensioning of their scantlings is based on different models.

In the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology, Gdansk University of Technology, design has recently been developed of a small inland ship with hybrid propulsion and supply system. The ship will be propelled by a specially designed so called parallel hybrid propulsion system. The work was aimed at carrying out the energy efficiency analysis of a hybrid propulsion system operating in the electric motor drive mode and at performing the noise pollution measurements. The performed investigations have shown that a significant impact on the efficiency and on the acoustic emission has the type of belt transmission applied.

A method is proposed for the determination of propeller forces during ship maneuvering. Artificial neural networks were applied to the performance prediction of a propeller working under such conditions as braking, stopping and running astern. Furthermore, an effect of oblique motion of a maneuvering ship, is studied by means of computational fluid dynamics methods. Wake distributions in the propeller plane are presented when the drift angle gets higher. A simple application example of the discussed methods is presented for a real case of a maneuvering ship.
W pracy zaproponowano metodę służącą do określania sił śruby napędowej podczas manewrowania statkiem. Do wyznaczenia charakterystyk śruby napędowej pracujacej w warunkach hamowania, zatrzymania i ruchu wstecz zastosowano sztuczne sieci neuronowe. Ponadto, przy pomocy metod numerycznej mechaniki płynów uwzględniono efekt skośnego ruchu kadłuba manewrującego statku. Zaprezentowano obliczone podczas zwiększania się kąta dryfu rozkłady strumienia nadążającego w płaszczyźnie kręgu śrubowego. W oparciu o prosty przykład przedyskutowano możliwość zastosowania zaprezentowanej metody dla rzeczywistego przypadku manewrującego statku.

In the paper is presented a definition of ship rolling axis and a method for determination of location of the axis. Location of rolling axis depends not only on ship mass distribution but also on the so-called "added masses" which are equivalents of the hydrodynamic forces acting on ship hull during its motion. It has been assumed that the rolling axis is fixed with respect to ship's hull, and its location is determined with accounting for the added masses accompanying ship rolling, whereas the influence of damping forces is neglected. For a representative group of ships appropriate coefficients of hydrodynamic forces were calculated on the basis of the experimental test results available in the subject-matter literatuŹre. It has been assumed that the rolling axis passes through a common centre of ship's mass and relevant added masses. As a result proposed are simple approximate formulas which make it possible to calculate location of ship rolling axis on the basis of the typical ship data available at the preliminary design stage.

The angle of heel on account of turning is one of the mandatory stability criteria for passenger ships. Formula used for calculations of this criterion contained in the International Code on Intact Stability [13] is criticized at present. Agendas of the Sub-committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) for the first (2014) and the second (2015) sessions contain the item on revision of this criterion and corresponding regulation. The paper presents some shortcomings of the criterion. Turning tests of a freely maneuvering model of a passenger ship have been executed aiming at gathering data for the future discussion and its facilitation. The paper presents results of the tests together with preliminary conclusions that confirm the need of the revision of the regulation and put forward concerns on application of such values as initial metacentric height (GMo) and righting lever curve (GZ(?)) calculated for a ship laying still for calculation of a ship’s heel caused by turn.

Paper presents results of studies on a parametric method of predicting ship operating costs - useful in the preliminary ship design. Conception and theoretical basis of the method are presented, identified are also factors of significant importance for the ship operating costs, taking into account changes in the value of money. Approximation formulae for estimating the operating cost components have been developed as well as a computational algorithm based on a minimum Required Freight Rate (RFR). The useful character of the method is illustrated by examples of operating cost predictions for four different ship types designed in the Eureka project E!2772, i.e.: SINE 202 universal container carrier, SINE 203 oil product tanker, SINE 204 ro-ro ship and SINE 205 river-sea ship.

The paper presents a method for preliminary estimation of the length of the midship body block, which inserted in the original hull, increases the deadweight of the ship in line with a required quantity. The method may be useful for establishing the scope of conversion to better adjust the ship for transportation tasks. The problem is formulated by using a mathematical model so selected that its solution, under set of assumptions, is obtained in a closed analytical form. The presented method can be useful for application to pre-investment analysis of the ship conversion costs and functional profits.

In this paper the basic research problems associated with modelling the basic stealth features for a small navy ship at the concept design stage are introduced. Amongst the major stealth features considered are: the modification of the immersed ship hull form by a rapid change of the ship loading condition, and modification of the ship boundary layer by the hull skin cover. The other stealth features of the ship are not presented in this paper as they do not refer to the ship hydromechanics. The research method is based on the navy ship risk assessment and assessment of the ship performance. The risk may be estimated according to a proposed risk model. The risk assessment may be done according to the risk matrix criteria. The ship performance assessment is based on modification of the immersed ship hull form and modification of the ship boundary layer. Some elements of the research method and mathematical model for estimating the ship performance are introduced in the paper. In general, the research is associated with the interdisciplinary investigations and multi-criteria ship design. The problems presented in the paper follow the Ph.D. research conducted at the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology at Gdańsk University of Technology.

Automatically recognizing and tracking dynamic targets on the sea is an important task for intelligent navigation, which is the prerequisite and foundation of the realization of autonomous ships. Nowadays, the radar is a typical perception system which is used to detect targets, but the radar echo cannot depict the target’s shape and appearance, which affects the decision-making ability of the ship collision avoidance. Therefore, visual perception system based on camera video is very useful for further supporting the autonomous ship navigational system. However, ship’s recognition and tracking has been a challenge task in the navigational application field due to the long distance detection and the ship itself motion. An effective and stable approach is required to resolve this problem. In this paper, a novel ship recognition and tracking system is proposed by using the deep learning framework. In this framework, the deep residual network and cross-layer jump connection policy are employed to extract the advanced ship features which help enhance the classification accuracy, thus improves the performance of the object recognition. Experimentally, the superiority of the proposed ship recognition and tracking system was confirmed by comparing it with state of-the-art algorithms on a large number of ship video datasets.

The article presents the selected results of the experimental research of the influence of the ship’s motion on the sea waves on the value of the heat transfer coefficient between the fluidised bed and the heating surface of the ship’s fluidised-bed boiler immersed therein. Paper discussed important factors affecting handling of ULCS (ultra large container ships) in Port of Gdańsk. In recent years more such vessels had been calling Gdańsk, including new generation of ULCs called Triple-E launched by Maersk. Studies conducted in Maritime University confirmed feasibility of safe handling of such large vessels but pointed to several factors needed to be taken under consideration to provide required safety level for ship handling operations. Author analysed factors responsible for safe handling ULCs in Gdańsk.
W artykule omówiono ważne czynniki wpływające na manewrowanie dużymi kontenerowcami w porcie gdańskim. W ostatnich latach coraz więcej takich statków zawijało do portu w Gdańsku, włączając w to nową generację ultra dużych kontenerowców typu Triple-E, zbudowaną dla firmy Maersk. Badania przeprowadzone na Uniwersytecie Morskim w Gdyni potwierdziły możliwość bezpiecznego manewrowania takimi statkami, ale wskazały na szereg czynników, które powinny być uwzględnione w celu zapewnienia odpowiedniego poziomu bezpieczeństwa operacjom manewrowania statkami. Autorzy przeanalizowali czynniki odpowiedzialne za bezpieczne manewrowanie dużymi kontenerowcami w porcie gdańskim.

The paper shows purposefulness and possiblity of automation of ship propulsion systems, especially those of POD type, intended to be used on four Baltic navigation ships: a containership, ro-ro ship, product tanker, as well as river-sea-going ship, designed within the frame of the Eureka "Baltecologicalship" project. Requirements of ship classification societies, and general ones for modern ship control systems were presented, as well as a review and analysis of currently applied power plant automation systems for diesel- electric ships fitted with podded propulsion drive (POD), were performed. Moreover real ways and possibilities of controlling ship s course and speed were indicated. Information contained in this paper may facilitate selecting appropriate design assumptions for a propulsion control system to be applied on the above mantioned ships.

Container ship length was estimated using artificial neural networks (ANN), as well as a random search based on Multiple Nonlinear Regression (MNLR). Two alternative equations were developed to estimate the length between perpendiculars based on container number and ship velocity using the aforementioned methods and an up-to-date container ship database. These equations could have practical applications during the preliminary design stage of a container ship. The application of heuristic techniques for the development of a MNLR model by variable and function randomisation leads to the automatic discovery of equation sets. It has been shown that an equation elaborated using this method, based on a random search, is more accurate and has a simpler mathematical form than an equation derived using ANN.
