Opis:
Honeycomb structures with zero Poisson’s ratio show promising potential for application in variable-sweep wing aircraft. The shear properties of these honeycomb structures serve as a crucial indicator of their morphing capacity. This paper derives the linear and non-linear shear properties of a honeycomb structure with zero Poisson’s ratio. A modified factor is introduced to establish a relationship between the linear and non-linear shear modulus of the honeycomb structure, simplifying the calculation method of the non-linear shear modulus. The validity of theoretical predictions is then confirmed using the finite element method Furthermore, the influences of the geometric parameters on the shear properties of the honeycomb structure with zero Poisson’s ratio are investigated, highlighting the varying contributions of these cell geometric parameters to the shear properties.

Opis:
Refill friction stir spot welding (refill FSSW) was used to weld 3.2-mm-thick 2060 aluminum alloy. Joint formation, defect characteristics and tensile-shear property were analyzed. Results show that keyhole can be completely eliminated under different plunge depths. However, defects such as void, unconnected welding, hook can be observed under the plunge depths of 3.4-4 mm.The size of the overall void initially increased and then decreased with the increase of the plunge depth, while the void was the smallest under the plunge depth of 3.4 mm. The unconnected defect at the lap interface gradually shrank a welding line from obvious crack. Different hook morphologies were observed under different plunge depths. The tensile-shear load of joint increased with the increase of the plunge depth and was up to the largest under the plunge depth of 4 mm. All the tensile-shear specimens fractured along the lap interface. Compared with the void, the unconnected defect had a greater influence on the tensile-shear property.

Opis:
This work provides the values of both the static and the kinetic friction coefficients for chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) of Spanish origin. Knowledge concerning these coefficients has its main application in the study of agroindustrial structures and machinery with timber members in contact. This determination was developed taking into account the timber anisotropy to establish surfaces and directions of slipping. A modified direct shear test device was used to conduct the tests and reproduce the tribological system. This procedure was functional and reliable and considered suitable for standardizing the friction measurement between timber surfaces, since this device is widely distributed in geotechnical and materials laboratories and the European codes do not specify a procedure or device to carry it out. The average values obtained were 0.46 for the static coefficient and 0.33 for the kinetic one, without considering the surfaces and directions of slipping. These values ranged between 0.36 and 0.55 for the static friction coefficient and between 0.28 and 0.39 for the kinetic friction coefficient depending on the direction considered and also taking into account the anisotropy of the timber. A good correlation was obtained between both coefficients, thus allowing for the estimation of the kinetic coefficient from the static one.

Opis:
The process of mechanical cutting of magnetic materials has many advantages in the form of high efficiency with reduced process costs in relation to other cutting technologies; no thermal stresses in the material, which significantly deteriorate the magnetic properties; or the possibility of shaping materials taking into account long cutting lines. In industrial practice, it is very difficult to ensure appropriate conditions for the cutting process and its proper control. Currently, there are no data on the selection of technological parameters of the mechanical shear slitting process of grain-oriented silicon steel in terms of the obtained cutting surface quality and the obtained magnetic properties of the workpiece. The article presents the possibilities of forecasting the characteristic features of the cut edge and selected magnetic properties of grain-oriented silicon steel. For this purpose, proprietary numerical models using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) were used. Then, experimental studies were carried out, and the optimisation task was developed. The developed results enable the correct selection of technological parameters of the process, ensuring the appropriate quality of the cut edge of steel and minimal interference with the magnetic properties.

Opis:
A cast AZ91 magnesium alloy was processed via backward extrusion (BE) method at different temperatures of 250, 350 and 450°C. Metallography investigations were conducted at three different regions of BE-processed cup (wall, bottom and flow channel). The main feature observed at the wall of the BE cup was mechanical twins, the frequency of which was decreased by increasing the process temperature. Flow localization in the form of shear banding occurred within the flow channel at all deformation temperatures. The bottom of the BE-processed cup at 250°C exhibited coarse initial grains along with continuous network of eutectic phase at the grain boundaries. However, increasing the process temperature to 350 and 450°C led to the fragmentation of the γ-Mg17Al12 network down to the fine particles, where a considerable grain refinement was also traced particularly at 450°C. Furthermore, shear punch testing method was employed to evaluate the room temperature mechanical properties of the backward extruded specimens. The results show that BE-processed material would benefit from higher strength compared to the as-received material; however, the ductility follows different trends depending on the deformation temperature.

Opis:
This article concerns the assessment of selected physical and mechanical properties of a dump soil. The dump soil is a specific soil with a very heterogeneous internal structure. Next to each other, there may be lumps and crumbs of cohesive soils mixed with non-cohesive soils accompanied by a very diverse admixture of organic substance. In addition, the soil in the waste dump, in spatial terms, may significantly differ in consistency and density. This is the result of the process of forming a dump soil, which takes place in three stages: excavation, transport and dumping. A heterogeneous soil deposited within the waste dump is subject to further processes: consolidation, compaction and creeping. Changes occurring in the course of these processes have a significant impact on the development of the properties of the dump soil. Due to the large diversity of the tested soils, the results of their properties were divided into two groups, based on type and consistency of soil. This allows us to estimate the selected properties of the dump soil only on the basis of their macroscopic analysis.

Opis:
In the present paper, the results of rheological measurements in solutions of chitosan (Ch) with partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) are presented. Aqueous acetic acid, lactic acid and aqueous acetic acid/NaCl were used as solvents for chitosan, HPAM and Ch/HPAM solution blends. The criterion of miscibility of solution blends, based on the additivity rule of apparent shear viscosity (ηa) has been discussed. The rheological parameters from power law (Ostwald de Waele model) and activation energy of viscous flow (Ea) have been calculated from the flow curves and Arrhenius plots, respectively. It was found that studied polymer solutions exhibited the non-Newtonian behaviour with shear-thinning and/or shear-thickening areas. The final result depends on the thermodynamic goodness of the solvent and on the blend composition.

device to inflict plane stress
Opis:
The shear strength of anisotropic materials is carried out on the special samples and on the appropriate instrumentation. Research conducted to obtain a homogenous state of the shear stress in the plane sample is difficult, and involve numerous occurrence of additional stress. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the shear strength. The wood composites are classified as orthotropic materials. In addition, are composed of the layers early wood and latewood. The layers have different thicknesses and exhibit different strength properties. The principal method for determining the shear stress is the trial of twisting of thin-walled tubes. Production of the pipe samples from the wood to determine the shear stress is impossible, due to annual rings. Beginning of destruction of samples under load was registered by a prototype device. This device makes the realization of plane state of stress in the sample possible. The position of the axis of the sample relative to the direction of the load can be varied. Such configuration axle of the sample to the loading direction, allows to perform, also stretching or compression besides to shear. The tests were performed for the natural wood and surface modified wood. The paper presents an original method and device designed to determine the shear strength of anisotropic materials on the example of natural wood and a surface modified wood.

Opis:
The effect of high shear rate on the mechanical properties of polyethylene (PE), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polystyrene (PS), and polypropylene (PP) waste blend was investigated. The process was carried out at a temperature of 120°C using a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder. A constant screw speed of 250 rpm and a constant weight ratio of the PE/PET/PS/PP components of 1:1:1:1 were used. The preliminary research showed that the high shear rate had no effect on the impact strength. However, the significant improvement in the flexural properties was observed as compared to those obtained at a lower screw speed of 80–120 rpm.
Zbadano wpływ szybkości ścinania na właściwości mechaniczne mieszaniny odpadów polietylenu (PE), poli(tereftalanu etylenu) (PET), polistyrenu (PS) i polipropylenu (PP). Proces prowadzono w temperaturze 120°C przy użyciu przeciwbieżnej wytłaczarki dwuślimakowej. Stosowano stałą szybkość obrotową ślimaka 250 min-1 i stały stosunek masowy składników PE/PET/PS/PP 1:1:1:1.
