Opis:
The power boiler erection process requires temporary suspending of buckstays (Fig. 1). The aim of buckstays installation is to brace screens of combustion chamber. Suspending of buckstays is performed by means of strand jacks and steel rods. The amount, location and force ranges of each rods are modelled on the basis of static structural strength computations. In the paper the force sensor network incorporated into computer and wireless communication system designed to prevent overloading of the rods resulting from force asymmetry or computational faults is introduced and next subjected to optimization procedure. The operational data delivered by the network and recorded on the system hard drives let the authors perform the correlation analysis and linear regression to reduce the number of sensors. Thus two stage hierarchic algorithm which constructs the set of models for every single sensor and estimates their parameters, and then using genetic procedure minimizes a certain loss function to automate the sensor network optimization process is introduced. As a result, such investigation could significantly reduce cost of the whole system.

Opis:
Numerous technological applications use MEMS capacitive sensing technique as a major component, because of their ease of fabrication process, inexpensive and high sensitivity. The paper aims at modeling interdigitated capacitive (IDC) sensing. Virtually observe the contribution of variations in geometrical parameters to sensor efficiency and optimization factor. The sensor design is verified through ANSYS simulations. Results indicate “an efficient but poorly optimized sensor is better than a well-optimized sensor”. It is difficult to detect capacitance in the range of few pF generated using capacitive sensing. How it can be maximized with dimension optimization is focused in this paper.

Opis:
Reliable sensors and information are required for reliable condition monitoring. Complex systems are commonly monitored by many sensors for health assessment and operation purposes. When one of the sensors fails, the current state of the system cannot be calculated in same reliable way or the information about the current state will not be complete. Condition monitoring can still be used with an incomplete state, but the results may not represent the true condition of the system. This is especially true if the failed sensor monitors an important system parameter. There are two possibilities to handle sensor failure. One is to make the monitoring more complex by enabling it to work better with incomplete data; the other is to introduce hard or software redundancy. Sensor reliability is a critical part of a system. Not all sensors can be made redundant because of space, cost or environmental constraints. Sensors delivering significant information about the system state need to be redundant, but an error of less important sensors is acceptable. This paper shows how to calculate the significance of the information that a sensor gives about a system by using signal processing and decision trees. It also shows how signal processing parameters influence the classification rate of a decision tree and, thus, the information. Decision trees are used to calculate and order the features based on the information gain of each feature. During the method validation, they are used for failure classification to show the influence of different features on the classification performance. The paper concludes by analysing the results of experiments showing how the method can classify different errors with a 75% probability and how different feature extraction options influence the information gain.
Niezawodne monitorowanie stanu wymaga niezawodności czujników i pochodzących z nich informacji. Systemy złożone są zazwyczaj monitorowane przez wiele czujników, co pozwala na ocenę stanu technicznego oraz aspektów eksploatacyjnych. Gdy jeden z czujników ulega uszkodzeniu, uniemożliwia to obliczenie bieżącego stanu systemu z dotychczasową niezawodnością lub uzyskanie kompletnych informacji o bieżącym stanie. Stan można co prawda monitorować nawet przy niekompletnych danych, ale wyniki takiego monitorowania mogą nie odpowiadać rzeczywistemu stanowi systemu. Sytuacja taka ma miejsce w szczególności, gdy uszkodzony czujnik jest odpowiedzialny za monitorowanie istotnego parametru systemu. Problem uszkodzenia czujnika można rozwiązywać na dwa sposoby. Pierwszy polega na zwiększeniu złożoności systemu, co umożliwia jego sprawniejsze działanie w sytuacji, gdy dane są niekompletne. Drugim sposobem jest wprowadzenie nadmiarowego sprzętu (hardware'u) lub oprogramowania. Niezawodność czujników stanowi krytyczny aspekt systemu. Oczywiście, ze względu na ograniczenia przestrzenne, ekonomiczne i środowiskowe nie wszystkie czujniki w systemie mogą być nadmiarowe. Redundancja powinna dotyczyć wszystkich czujników, które dostarczają istotnych informacji na temat stanu systemu, natomiast dopuszczalne są błędy mniej ważnych czujników. W niniejszej pracy pokazano jak obliczać istotność informacji o systemie dostarczanych przez poszczególne czujniki z wykorzystaniem metod przetwarzania sygnałów oraz drzew decyzyjnych. Zademonstrowano również w jaki sposób parametry przetwarzania sygnałów wpływają na poprawność klasyfikacji metodą drzewa decyzyjnego, a tym samym na poprawność dostarczanych informacji. Drzew decyzyjnych używa się do obliczania i porządkowania cech w oparciu o przyrost informacji charakteryzujący poszczególne cechy. Podczas weryfikacji zastosowanej metody, drzewa decyzyjne wykorzystano do klasyfikacji uszkodzeń celem przedstawienia wpływu różnych cech na dokładność klasyfikacji. Pracę kończy analiza wyników eksperymentów pokazujących w jaki sposób zastosowana metoda pozwala na klasyfikację różnych błędów z 75-procentowym prawdopodobieństwem oraz jak różne opcje ekstrakcji cech wpływają na przyrost informacji.

Over the last few years, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have started to play more and more important role in civil and military applications. A typical sensor network consists of resource-constrained sensing nodes, which monitor environment and send the data to more powerful gateway nodes. The goal of gateway nodes is to aggregate, process and send the data to other gateways or directly to sink nodes. The proper placement of nodes is needed to provide good network operation. Sensing nodes are often placed in a random manner unlike gateways. Gateways, due to their role and cost, are installed rather in a controlled way. In this paper, a bi-criteria gateway placement problem is introduced. The problem is shown to be NP-hard. We formulate it as a linear programming problem, then we develop the Multi-criteria Simulated Allocation (MSAL) heuristic algorithm, for the purpose of cost-effective gateway deployment and power-effective wireless connection management. Finally, we evaluate the efficiency of the algorithm by comparison with the exact method.

Opis:
Multi-hop networks, such as WSNs, become an object of increasing attention as an emerging technology which plays an important role for practical IoT applications. These multi-hop networks generally consist of mobile and small terminals with limited resources, which makes them vulnerable to various network status changes. Moreover, the limited nature of terminal resources available, especially in terms of battery capacity, is one of the most important issues to be addressed in order to prolong their operating time. In order to ensure efficient communications in such networks, much research has already been conducted, especially in the field of routing and transmission technologies. However, conventional approaches adopted in the routing field still suffer from the so-called energy hole problem, usually caused by unbalanced communication loads existing due to difficulties in adaptive route management. To address this issue, the present paper proposes a novel routing algorithm that utilizes ACO-inspired routing based on residual energy of terminals. Operational evaluation reveals its potential to ensure balanced energy consumption and to boost network performance.

The objective of the work presented in this paper is to analyse the problem of deployment of TDMA wireless sensor networks in the area of transport telematics from the communication subsystem optimization perspective. The problem of broadcast scheduling has been outlined and a heuristic algorithm has been designed for the optimization of radio channel access control using the TDMA method. The channel utilization was the main optimization goal while eliminating primary and secondary conflicts between the broadcasting stations.

Progress of ICT is shifting the paradigm of systems organization towards a distributed approach, in which physical deployment of components influences the evaluation of systems properties. This contribution can be considered as a problem of graph layout optimization, well-known in literature where several approaches have been exploited in different application fields with different solving techniques. Then again, complex systems can be only studied by means of different formalisms which codification is the aim of language engineering. Telemaco is a tool that supports a novel approach for the application of graph layout optimizations to heterogeneous models, based on the OsMoSys framework and on the language engineering principles. It can cope with different graph-based formalisms by exploiting either their core graph nature or their different specialized features by means of language hierarchies. In this paper Telemaco is introduced together with its foundations and an example of application to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) deployment.

Wireless sensor network localization is a complex problem that can be solved using different types of methods and algorithms. Nowadays, it is a popular research topic. What becomes obvious is that there are several criteria which are essential when we consider wireless sensor networks. Our objective is to determine accurate estimates of nodes location under the constraints for hardware cost, energy consumption and computation capabilities. In this paper the application of stochastic optimization for performing localization of nodes is discussed. We describe two phase scheme that uses a combination of the trilateration method, along with the simulated annealing optimization algorithm. We investigate two variants of our technique, i.e., centralized and distributed. The attention is paid to the convergence of our algorithm for different network topologies and trade-off between its efficiency and localization accuracy.

Sensitive MEMS-based thermal flow sensors are the best choice for monitoring the patient’s respiration prompt diagnosis of breath disturbances. In this paper, open space micro-calorimetric flow sensors are investigated as precise monitoring tools. The differential energy balance equation, including convection and conduction terms, is derived for thermal analysis of the considered sensor. The temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of the thin silicon-oxide membrane layer is considered in the energy balance equation. The derived thermal non-linear differential equation is solved using a well-known analytical method, and a finite-element numerical solution is used for the confirmation. Results show that the presented analytical model offers a precise tool for evaluating these sensors. The effects of flow and thin membrane film parameters on thermo-resistive micro-calorimetric flow sensors’ performance and sensitivity are evaluated. The optimization has been performed at different flow velocities using a genetic algorithm method to determine the optimum configuration of the considered flow sensor. The geometrical parameters are selected as a decision variable in the optimization procedure. In the final step, using optimization results and curve-fitting, the expressions for the optimum decision variables have been derived. The sensor’s optimum configuration is achieved analytically based on flow velocity with the analytical terms for optimum decision variables.

Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) advances can route multimedia applications from source nodes to a sink. However, they require energy efficiency and network lifetime due to limited power resources in the sensor nodes. This paper proposes an energy-efficient routing optimization for multimedia transmission in WMSNs. The optimization utilizes a routing algorithm based on the dynamic programming. The routing optimization algorithm selects intermediary nodes which have minimum energy above 60%. Then, the priority selection of paths immediately finds neighboring nodes which have the greatest energy minimum. If there is the same minimum energy between the neighboring nodes, then the second priority selection is based on smaller link cost.

In a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, the attacker gains control of many network users through a virus. Then the controlled users send many requests to a victim, leading to its resources being depleted. DDoS attacks are hard to defend because of their distributed nature, large scale and various attack techniques. One possible mode of defense is to place sensors in a network that can detect and stop an unwanted request. However, such sensors are expensive, as a result of which there is a natural question as to the minimum number of sensors and their optimal placement required to get the necessary level of safety. Presented below are two mixed integer models for optimal sensor placement against DDoS attacks. Both models lead to a trade-off between the number of deployed sensors and the volume of uncontrolled flow. Since the above placement problems are NP-hard, two efficient heuristics are designed, implemented and compared experimentally with exact mixed integer linear programming solvers.

Magnetic system of speed and integrity of teeth sensors, which is a U-shaped magnetic core and magnetic circuit of circular section is optimized. A mathematical model of the dependence of the magnetic flux in the core induced by magnetized gear is presented. The results of numerical experiment are given. The conclusions and recommendations for optimizing the parameters of the SS magnetic systems are made.
Оптимизируется магнитная система датчиков частоты вращения и целостности зубьев, представляющая собой П-образный магнитопровод и магнитопровод круглого сечения. Представлена математическая модель зависимости магнитного потока в сердечнике, индуцированного намагниченным зубчатым колесом. Приведены результаты численного эксперимента. Сделаны выводы и даны рекомендации по оптимизации параметров магнитных систем ДЧВ.

Many applications of wireless sensor networks (WSN) require information about the geographic location of each sensor node. Devices that form WSN are expected to be remotely deployed in large numbers in a sensing field, and to self-organize to perform sensing and acting task. The goal of localization is to assign geographic coordinates to each device with unknown position in the deployment area. Recently, the popular strategy is to apply optimization algorithms to solve the localization problem. In this paper, we address issues associated with the application of heuristic techniques to accurate localization of nodes in a WSN system. We survey and discuss the location systems based on simulated annealing, genetic algorithms and evolutionary strategies. Finally, we describe and evaluate our methods that combine trilateration and heuristic optimization.

Many applications of wireless sensor networks (WSN) require information about the geographical location of each sensor node. Self-organization and localization capabilities are one of the most important requirements in sensor networks. This paper provides an overview of centralized distance-based algorithms for estimating the positions of nodes in a sensor network. We discuss and compare three approaches: semidefinite programming, simulated annealing and two-phase stochastic optimization-a hybrid scheme that we have proposed. We analyze the properties of all listed methods and report the results of numerical tests. Particular attention is paid to our technique-the two-phase method-that uses a combination of trilateration, and stochastic optimization for performing sensor localization. We describe its performance in the case of centralized and distributed implementations.

The paper aims at localization of the anchor node (fixed node) by pursuit nodes (movable node) in outdoor location. Two methods are studied for node localization. The first method is based on LNSM (Log Normal Shadowing Model) technique to localize the anchor node and the second method is based on Hybrid TLBO (Teacher Learning Based Optimization Algorithm) - Unilateral technique. In the first approach the ZigBee protocol has been used to localize the node, which uses RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) values in dBm. LNSM technique is implemented in the self-designed hardware node and localization is studied for Outdoor location. The statistical analysis using RMSE (root mean square error) for outdoor location is done and distance error found to be 35 mtrs. The same outdoor location has been used and statistical analysis is done for localization of nodes using Hybrid TLBO-Unilateral technique. The Hybrid-TLBO Unilateral technique significantly localizes anchor node with distance error of 0.7 mtrs. The RSSI values obtained are normally distributed and standard deviation in RSSI value is observed as 1.01 for outdoor location.
