To save the unsavable. The poetry of Nino De Vita: Translation and Self-Translation – The article reflects upon the argument of translation and self-translation referring to the Sicilian poet Nino De Vita, who translates his own texts from the Marsala dialect into Italian. Moreover, the article aims to compare two translation solutions of De Vita’s texts, wherein besides respecting the sense of otherness and exoticism of the original version, one of the most distinctive traits of the Sicilian dialect emerges: the vowel sound ‘u’.

Nowadays self-translation remains a frequent practice in the literary field in Canada. A close reading of the self-translations done by Canadian writers such as Nancy Houston, Marco Micone or Patrice Desbiens allows to discover each author’s own vision of self-translation as a creative process. The aim of the paper is to determine, through a comparative analysis of excerpts from the two language versions of the play La Maculée/sTain (2012) and the latest bilingual novel La voix de mon père / My Father’s Voice (2015) by Fransaskois playwright Madeleine Blais-Dahlem, to what extent her self-translating practice guides the reading of the text. Examiningthe back and forth between the two versions of the same work will allow to delve deeper into the subject of the identity and privileged status of the translator (Tanqueiro 2009: 109, Saint 2018: 120), but also into the role and skills of the receiver of Madeleine Blais-Dahlem’s bilingual writings.

The author of the article focuses on Polish writers that intentionally create their works simultaneously in Polish and in languages other than Polish, situating their creativity directly in European and world literature. She also discusses the case of bicultural authors whose creativity emanates from Polish culture but for whom Polish was only one of the languages they based their literature on. While listing such examples, the author considers the possibility of interpreting such works and placing them in the discourse of world literature.

Opis:
Janusz Głowacki’s internationally acclaimed tragicomedy inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone has been the subject of intense debate and misinterpretations. The article aims to demonstrate that the play was primarily written in Polish, and that the English version is an adaptation/rewriting made by the author in collaboration with the American screenwriter Joan Torres. Furthermore, it shows that the English version was created while the writing of the Polish text was still in progress, so that the former influenced and left clear traces in the latter, questioning the traditional hierarchy between the original and the translated or adapted text.

The article analyses Brygida Helbig’s novel Niebko (2013) and its German translation (Kleine Himmel, 2019). The author of the paper discovers numerous inconsistencies in the two language versions. The adopted perspective is of an interdisciplinary nature, it combines linguistic and literary elements. The conclusions of the analysis contribute to reflections regarding the translation of intercultural literature, the phenomenon of self-translation, and the redefinition of the term “translation”.
Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie translatorycznej powieści Brygidy Helbig pt. Niebko (2013) oraz jej niemieckiego przekładu (Kleine Himmel, 2019). Porównanie obu wersji pozwala stwierdzić liczne rozbieżności. Przyjęta perspektywa translatologiczna ma charakter interdyscyplinarny, łączy elementy językoznawcze oraz literaturoznawcze. Wnioski z analizy stanowią przyczynek do refleksji na temat przekładu literatury interkulturowej, zjawiska autotranslacji oraz redefinicji pojęcia „przekład”.

This paper deals with the philological issues arisen in Italy in the case of Beckett’s drama in relation to his status as a self-translator, a fact still unclear when the first Italian translations were composed. This produced some inaccuracies as to the status of the original text: Fruttero usually translated from French, but several modifications were later introduced based on the English version. It was not revealed in the paratext that a modified translation combines both authorial texts.
Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy zagadnień filologicznych powstałych we Włoszech wokół dramatów Samuela Becketta w związku z jego statusem autora samotłumaczącego się. Kiedy pierwsze tłumaczenia na język włoski były realizowane, okoliczność ta pozostawała jeszcze niejasna. To powodowało pewne nieścisłości co do statusu oryginału: Fruttero zwykle tłumaczył z francuskiego, lecz niektóre zmiany zostały później wprowadzone w oparciu o wersję angielską. W paratekście nie zostaje ujawnione, że zmodyfikowane tłumaczenie łączy oba autorskie teksty.

In the last 30 years there has been an increased interest among researchers in the problem of self-translation, particularly in the context of novel translation. The aim of the following paper is to present the challenges of self-translation in a context of dramatic texts. The corpus of analysis for this article will be three plays written by bilingual artists who are rooted in Western Canadian provinces – Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The analysis of the fragments of the originals compared with the self-translated versions of the plays: “La Trahison/The Betrayal” by Laurier Gareau (2004) “La Maculée/sTain” by Madeleine Blais-Dahlem (2012) and Marc Prescott’s “Fort Mac” (2009) will allow us to determine the characteristics of self-translation of each of these “privileged translators”.

Artykuł jest poświęcony autotłumaczeniom w funkcjonującym na Ukrainie mieszanym mówieniu, czyli surżykowi. Autorka przedstawia charakter autotłumaczeń, przyczyny ich pojawienia się i wpływ jaki mają na nie parametry społeczno-demograficzne respondentów. Badania prowadzono przy użyciu metodologii ilościowej i jakościowej na materiale korpusu językowego powstałego na bazie danych zebranych w centralnym regionie Ukrainy.
The article deals with auto-translations in the Ukrainian-Russian mixed speech in Ukraine (the so-called surzhyk). The author discusses the nature of self-translations, the reasons for their appearance and the way the socio-demographic parameters of respondents influence them. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted on the basis of corpora collected in the central region of Ukraine.

The present paper discusses the use of portfolio tool in teaching translation competence to undergraduate translation students. The current reflections highlight two main functions of this tool, namely stimulating student’s reflexivity and self-correction of the translation product. Odwołując się do metafory przeprawy przez niebezpieczne morze, można powiedzieć, że tłumacz własnego tekstu rzeczywiście zapuszcza się na jakieś nieznane wody, meandruje między górami lodowymi źródłowych i docelowych języków, kultur i tradycji pisarstwa akademickiego. Niniejszy artykuł jest zaproszeniem do prześledzenia procesu autoprzekładu na język angielski mojej własnej książki pt. Przekładanie obrazu świata. Językowy obraz świata w przekładzie artystycznym, wydanej po polsku w 2018 roku, a osadzonej tematycznie w (głównie) słowiańskich tradycjach etnolingwistyki i badań nad językowym obrazem świata. Książka ukazała się w języku angielskim w 2021 roku pod tytułem Translating a Worldview. Linguistic Worldview in Literary Translation. Rozważane w artykule aspekty autoprzekładu obejmują pamięć autora tekstu źródłowego (tj. moją własną) dotyczącą procesu pisania oryginału, polski i angielski styl akademicki, odtwarzanie terminologii (w tym kluczowego terminu językowy obraz świata – linguistic worldview/linguistic view of X, czy pojęcie/koncept – concept), sam tytuł monografii jako aspekt rekonstrukcji treści, a także zarządzanie cytatami. Co więcej, proces autoprzekładu okazał się niełatwy, bo wysiłek zrozumienia autora oryginału powiększył się o wymiar zmagania, by zrozumieć samą siebie: własne myśli i intuicje, zapisane jakiś czas temu.
To use the metaphor of a voyage across a rough sea, it can be said that a self-translator does indeed venture into some unknown waters, meandering between the icebergs of the source and target languages, cultures and academic writing traditions. This study is an invitation to trace back the process of self-translation into English of my own book Przekładanie obrazu świata. Językowy obraz świata w przekładzie artystycznym, published in Polish in 2018, and couched within the (mostly) Slavic traditions of ethnolinguistics and the study of linguistic worldviews. The book appeared in English in 2021 under the title Translating a Worldview. Linguistic Worldview in Literary Translation. The aspects of self-translation considered in the paper include the source-text author’s (i.e. my own) memory of the (original) writing process, the Polish and English academic styles, re-creation of the terminology (including the key terms językowy obraz świata – linguistic worldview/linguistic view of X, or pojęcie/koncept – concept), the title itself as an aspect of content reconstruction, as well as management of quotations. Moreover, the process of self-translation turned out to be no easy task as the effort to understand the original author was doubled by the struggle to understand myself: my own thoughts and intuitions, recorded some time ago.

The paper attempts to describe selected aspects of the impact of new concepts (such as history of European literature or history of the world republic of literature) that have entered into the literary and translation discourse and that coexist with the traditional categories such as ancient literature, modern literature, national literature, world literature, synthesis of the history of literature or process of the history of literature. The “confusion of tongues” (confusio linguarum) connected with the emergence of these novel concepts has undoubtedly affected the discipline of translation studies and, in particular, the promotional aspects of translation and self-translation as well as other related phenomena. An interesting role in this discussion is also played by what I refer to as “perspective,” from which the incorporation of given works or authors into European literature or world literature is being observed. In two out of the four analyzed works, the French (Parisian) perspective prevails, characteristic of a certain stage of comparative studies that seemed to have lost significance some time ago. The two remaining works, written from the Czech perspective, are addressed to English- and German-speaking readers, respectively.
Práce je pokusem popsat některé aspekty vlivu jež v dyskursu literárnědnem (i překladatelském) maji některe nové koncepty (vedle již zavedených: literatura starověká, literatura novověká, literatura obecná, literárněhistorická synteza, literárněhistorický proces). Konkrétně jde o koncepty historie evropské literatury, historie světové literatury a zejmena světové republiky literatury. To, co vycházi z těchto konceptu (svého druhu confusio linguarum) muselo změnit široce pojatou translatologii, především pokud jde o propagační silu překladu, autopřekladu, atd. Hodno úvahy je rovněž to, co popisuji jako „hledisko”, z něhož je možno pozorovat pronikaní konkretnych děl do „literatury evropské” nebo „literatury světové”. Ve dvou ze čtyř analyzovaných prací dominuje francouzské (resp. Pařížské hledisko), které je typické pro jisté období komparatistických studii. O tomto hledisku se soudi, že je již šťastně překonáno. Dvě další prace jsou napsány z české perspektivy a obracejí se k čtenářům anglo- a německojazyčným.
W artykule podjęto próbę opisania wybranych aspektów oddziaływania nowych koncepcji (takich jak historia literatury europejskiej czy historia światowej republiki literatury), które weszły do dyskursu literackiego i przekładoznawczego i które współistnieją z tradycyjnymi kategoriami, takimi jak literatura dawna, współczesna, literatura narodowa, literatura światowa czy proces historii literatury. „Pomieszanie języków” (confusio linguarum), związane z pojawieniem się tych pojęć powieściowych, niewątpliwie wpłynęło na dziedzinę studiów translatorskich, a w szczególności na promocję przekładu i autoprzekładu oraz na inne zjawiska z tym związane. Ciekawą rolę w tej dyskusji odgrywa również to, co nazywam „perspektywą”, z której obserwuje się włączanie danych utworów lub autorów do literatury europejskiej lub światowej. W dwóch z czterech analizowanych w artykule dzieł dominuje perspektywa francuska (paryska), charakterystyczna dla pewnego etapu badań porównawczych, który, jak się zdaje, już się zakończył. Dwie pozostałe publikacje, napisane z perspektywy czeskiej, są adresowane do czytelników anglo- i niemieckojęzycznych.

Tematem artykułu jest autobiograficzna narracja polsko-szwedzkiego pisarza i dziennikarza (ur. 1951). Uwaga autora skupia się na przybliżeniu wpisanego w utwór procesu translacji pojęć i kategorii związanych z polskimi realiami na język i system pojęć zrozumiałych dla czytelnika szwedzkiego. Ta translacja odbywa się na co najmniej trzech płaszczyznach: językowej (język polski versus język szwedzki), kulturowej (obecność realiów związanych z kulturami: polską, szwedzką i żydowską) oraz tożsamościowej (narrator identyfikujący się równocześnie, choć w różnym stopniu i na różne sposoby z trzema kulturami). Obecność bohatera autobiografii w kilku przestrzeniach kulturowo-językowych pozwala mu na dystans do każdej z nich, to zaś ułatwia mu przeprowadzenie autowiwisekcji (główna motywacja powstania zapisu), mającej wymiar autoterapeutyczny.  
This article concerns an autobiographical narrative written by a Polish-Swedish writer and journalist Maciej Zaremba Bielawski (born in 1951). It focuses on the process of translating concepts and categories related to the Polish realities into the language and system of concepts that are comprehensive to Swedish readers. This process occurs at three levels: linguistic (Polish versus Swedish), cultural (realities related to the Polish, Swedish and Jewish cultures), and identity (a narrator who identifies himself with three cultures, though to a different degree and in different ways). The narrator lives in a few cultural and linguistic spaces, distancing himself from each of them. Keeping the distance allows him to focus on himself and to practice self-reflection (the main motivation for writing the book in question). It also instigates a process that is not only self-cognitive but also self-therapeutic for the writer.

Opis:
In this paper we consider a retained digits Cantor set $T$ based on digit expansions with Gaussian integer base. Let $F$ be the set all $x$ such that the intersection of $T$ with its translate by $x$ is non-empty and let $F_β$ be the subset of $F$ consisting of all $x$ such that the dimension of the intersection of $T$ with its translate by $x$ is $β$ times the dimension of $T$. We find conditions on the retained digits sets under which $F_β$ is dense in $F$ for all $0 ≤ β ≤ 1$. The main novelty in this paper is that multiplication the Gaussian integer base corresponds to an irrational (in fact transcendental) rotation in the complex plane.

Translation Problem in The Reality of Translation Teaching Translation problem plays a fundamental role in translation activities on all levels. It triggers a chain of translation activities of which the translator may be aware or unaware. The course of these actions and the procedures adopted by the translator are dependent on type of translation, on components of translation setting which exists in a particular, real translation situation, on characteristics of the translation problem, on the level of problem analysis, as well as on the cognitive predispositions of the translator. Acknowledging the fundamental role of the translation problem in the translation process and accepting the assumption that the quality of the translation is directly dependent on the steps taken by the translator with the aim of solving and properly identifying translation problems , one has to consider translation problem as a category relevant to translation teaching. From the point of view of translation teaching, it is important to determine translator’s qualities, abilities, skills, and knowledge areas that have influence on the quality of actions taken with the aim of solving translation problems effectively. The same applies to attitudes of future translators. Moreover, it is the task of translation teaching researchers to develop methods which will help future translators achieve the expected level of translation competence. This paper presents a concept which could provide a starting point for designing translation teaching curricula.
