SCAPEGOAT RITUAL - Opis:
- The author puts forward the hypothesis that the 'scapegoat' ritual had been introduced to Greece under the influence of the Phoenicians. That opinion is based on five arguments: 1. the etymology of the term suba/xos (connected with Hebr. zebah and Phoen. zbh 'sacrifice'); 2. the great role of the number seven at the 'scapegoat' ritual in Greece and at the Semitic rituals (including the scapegoat rituals in the Old Testament); 3. the possibility that the god Apollo and some elements of his cult originate in Phoenicia; 4. the presence of the scapegoat ritual in Syria-Palestine (beginning from the third millennium B.C.); 5. the fact that there were some cultural connections between the Phoenicians and the Ionians in the early Iron Age.
