Opis:
The influence of climate and topography on crop condition and yield estimates is most effectively monitored by non-invasive satellite imagery. This paper evaluates the efficiency of free-access Sentinel 2 and Landsat 5, 7 and 8 satellite images scanned by different sensors on wheat growth and yield prediction. Five winter and spring wheat cultivars were grown between 2005 and 2017 in a relatively small 11.5 ha field with a 6% slope. The normalized difference vegetation index was derived from the satellite images acquired for later growth phases of the wheat crops (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessorenamt and Chemical industry 55 – 70) and then compared with the topography wetness index, crop yields and yield frequency maps. The results showed a better correlation of data obtained over one day (R2 = 0.876) than data with a one-day delay (R2 = 0.689) using the Sentinel 2 B8 band instead of the B8A band for the near-infrared part of electromagnetic spectrum in the normalized difference vegetation index calculation.

Opis:
This paper presents the evolution of the mesoscale convection system as seen on satellite images during all stages: pre-convection, initiation, and maturity. The evolution of any atmospheric phenomenon can be monitored effectively only when the data available have adequate temporal and spatial resolution. In case of convective storms the resolution should be minutes and kilometers. Therefore, data from the METEOSAT geostationary satellite, with 5-minute and 15-minute intervals were used operationally to monitor the storm of 11 August 2017; this was a most destructive storms, concentrated in several districts of the Pomeranian, Greater Poland, and Kuyavian-Pomeranian voivodeships. Analysis demonstrated that some alarming features, like cold rings or cold U/V shapes, can be visible on the single channel satellite images, without even referring to specific convective products. However, the nowcasting of the convective phenomena requires careful analysis of several dedicated products, including stability indices and water vapor content in the troposphere. It has been shown that with comprehensive analysis of the information provided by the different satellite images and satellite derived products, it is possible to draw conclusions about the severity of the observed storms as well as the probability of the occurrence of the extreme weather at the ground.

IKONOS, „komercyjny” satelita dostarczający obrazów o najwyższej obecnie rozdzielczości geometrycznej, dostępnej ogółowi użytkowników, został pomyślnie umieszczony na orbicie we wrześniu 1999 roku. Dzięki nim naukowcy będą w stanie badać obszary zagrożone ekologicznie i wyznaczać trendy zmian z większą pewnością. Urzędnicy będą mogli monitorować i lepiej planować gospodarowanie przestrzenią, a urbaniści i planiści- wspierać rozwój budownictwa mieszkaniowego.

Information about user’s position can be obtained from specialized electronic position-fixing systems, in particular, Satellite Navigation Systems (SNS) as GPS and GLONASS, and Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) as EGNOS, WAAS, MSAS. All these systems are known also as GNSS (Global Satellite Navigation System). As the number of GPS and GLONASS satellites visible by the user is sometimes in restricted area not sufficient, and these SNS cannot provide information about integrity, there is one service for civil users only etc., new systems, global as well as regional, must be constructed. The last years gave a rise to many important changes in the operational status and practical exploitation of all these systems. New SNS as Galileo in Europe and Compass (Beidou) in China, new SBAS as GAGAN in India and SDCM in Russia, new regional SNS as IRNSS in India and QZSS in Japan are actually under construction. Additionally the new satellite blocks as GPS IIF and III, and GLONASS K1 and K2, the new signals as GPS L5 and L1C, and GLONASS LC3OC and L1OC, the new services and possible applications of the future system Galileo are presented in this paper.

Opis:
Na podstawie sceny obejmującej obszar okolic Lublina wykonano m.in. ocenę możliwości interpretacyjnych. W siedmiostopniowej skali MSIIRS (Multispectral Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale) analizowane zobrazowanie zakwalifikowano na poziomie 3.
Ukrainian-Russian carrier rocket Dnepr, that was launched on August 17, 2011 from the Baikonur Dombarowskij in Russia, has placed in orbit the Sich-2 satellite. It is a satellite dedicated to Earth observation, designed and manufactured by the Ukrainian space industry. Sich-2 is a continuation of the mission Sich-1, Okean-O and Sich-1M. According to the Ukrainian National Space Policy the Sich-2 gives rise to a constellation of modern micro-satellites. They are designed to collect imagery of the Earth surface in the visible and near-infrared radiation with a spatial resolution of: 8 m (Sich-2, Sich-2M), 1 m (Sich-3-O) and the 1 m radar images (Sich-3-R). Satellites are characterized by high sophistication in terms of electronic and polymeric and composite materials used during the construction. Installed devices are designed to work under the "open" space and do not require special protection in the form of sealed enclosures. Sich-2 satellite operates at a 700 km altitude on the Sun synchronous orbit and having the inclination of 98.24°. The image data are collected in four spectral bands, with a spatial resolution of 8.2 m (PAN, R, G, B) and 41.4 m in the mid-infrared (MIR). The optical system provides the ability to change viewing angle from nadir up to 30°. Width of the panchromatic and multispectral scene is 48 km (at nadir) and 58 km for the MIR scanner. The article demonstrates the possibility of using the new Ukrainian satellite images acquired from the Sich-2, which, due to the spatial resolution are similar to the image data from FORMOSAT-2, SPOT-5 and RapidEye. Examples of using Sich-2 for monitoring of vegetation in built-up areas, monitoring of natural disasters (floods, snow drifts, fires) and classification of agricultural areas are presented. These are the results of work carried out by the company Dniprocosmos S.C., which specializes in satellite image processing and is a distributor of satellite data. The team of the Earth Observation Group from the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences acquired one of the first images from the Sich-2, that captured Polish territory. Based on a scene depicting the area around Lublin, in March 2012, analysis of interpretation possibilities were performed. It was done using the MSIIRS (Multispectral Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale) interpretation system. The Sich-2 image was classified at level 3 of eight-point scale.

This paper discusses the current and new satellite transponders for global tracking and detecting of oceangoing ships, assets, crew, passengers and any moving objects at sea for enhanced vessels traffic control and management. These transponders are able to monitor all maritime assets and to improve safety, security of movements and collision avoidance, especially during very bad weather conditions and visibility. By deployment of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in integration with Inmarsat, Iridium and other satellite systems in one unit with antenna, it is possible to provide reliable positioning and tracking solutions for civilian maritime, other mobiles and personnel at different Radio Frequency (RF) bands. The existing and forthcoming space and ground segment for positioning and tracking solutions as a modern Satellite Asset Tracking (SAT) onboard ships, and other relating systems are discussed and benefits of these new technologies and solution for improved positioning and tracking are explored.

Opis:
Satellite compass is the specific, multiantenna receiver of the satellite navigation system which, apart from the standard functions, like position, time, Course and Velocity etc. enable to measure the angles of the orientation of the ship's hull. The most popular solution is two-antenna solution, which gives opportunity to measure two angles: heading and pitch or roll. However, three antenna solutions are accessible as well (www.furuno.co.jp). In this option the device can measure full information about space orientation of the object. Discussed devices has common name 'compass' although they are still not officially confirmed in this role and according IMO's resolutions they can be used only as auxiliary source of information and is classified as Heading Transmitting Devices (MSC.116). The origin of satellite compasses we can find in interferometry used in astronomy since sixties, however the present solutions in fact are adopted from Real Time Kinematic variant of GPS technology (Felski 1999). Nonetheless products accessible on the shelf are very diverse in construction, electronics and software so in practice of their exploitation very different proprieties could be observed. In the report the practical experiences with the use of two different types of satellite compasses are presented, as well as the analysis of observed errors. It turned out that the behavior of satellite compass is not comparable to any gyro or magnetic compasses which are in fact something natural. In fact signal from satellite compass has three kinds of errors: first one is small noise with amplitude of same arc-minutes which is natural in any electronic devices, the second one is long-term changes which are seems be dependent on satellite constellation configuration and finally short, big changes correlated with transition period when new configuration of satellites is catches-on. According to the observations very important are solutions assumed in electronics and software, because observations confirm that two different constructions characterize themselves with very different proprieties.

Providing the users in Poland with the ASG-EUPOS system in the mid-2008 has significantly influenced the popularization of satellite survey techniques, especially realtime surveys. Real-time satellite levelling has become a very effective way of determining normal heights of points. The paper discusses the problem of satellite levelling carried out for linear structures using, the most popular among the users, Real Time Network surveys referring to the ASG-EUPOS system, as well as RTK GPS surveys carried out in relation to a physical reference station. The conclusions regarding the possibility of applying satellite levelling in real time on railway areas were based on the surveys of several sections of a railway line, for which geodetic precise leveling was also conducted.

Opis:
The rapid development of satellite navigation and timing technologies and the broad availability of user equipment and applications has dramatically changed the world over the last 20 years. It took 38 years from the launch of the world’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, (October 4, 1957) to the day NAVSTAR GPS became fully operational (July 17, 1995). In the next 20 years user equipment became widely available at the consumer level, and 10 global and regional satellite systems were partially or fully deployed. These highly precise signals provided free to the user have been incorporated by clever engineers into virtually every technology. At the same time interference with these signals (spoofing and jamming) have become a significant day to day problem in many societies and pose a significant threat to critical infrastructure. This paper provides information on the current status and development of navigation satellite systems based on data provided by the systems' administrators. It also provides information on Loran/eLoran, a system which many nations have selected as a complement and backup for satellite navigation systems.

The aim of the presentation is an attempt of a new approach to the matters of regionalization of geographical space and valorization of scenic units made from the outside reference point (in the orthogonal grid). Such an opportunity to take a look from another perspective is given by analysis of aerial and satellite photos, and DTM. Regardless of the adopted way of perceiving the landscape: either as a peculiar spatial structural-material unit (an approach typical of natural sciences), or a physiognomic approach (typical of humanist and technical sciences), the landscape requires appropriate categorization and evaluation. The presentation shows methods which allow for multi-criterion evaluation of spatial units, and then basing on this, suggest possibilities of new spatial divisions. From the point of view of analysis of Sat images and DTM, the most important methods include: Cartographic methods, like: bonitation method, matrix method of determining landscape value, landscape model as surface features, method of determining boundaries and ranges of scenic units, their features, intensity, needs, significance, relations, etc., method of cartometric determination of outlines of objects (scenic units) as basic fields of evaluation – determination of shape and size; Terrain methods used mainly in landscape architecture, like: method of scenic interiors and units, method of impression curve by Wejchert, method of rural landscape classification by Sóhngen, “photographic” method by Cymerman and Hopper, Methods of landscape evaluation based on the infrastructure value (landscape as an element of the cultural-architectonical value) e.g. evaluation and valorization of landscape by means of assessing the value of object included in it, e.g. property, building structures, monuments; Methods of functional evaluation e.g. agricultural, forest, urban, etc.; Methods of evaluation of the photo-tonal value (colour range); Methods of landscape evaluation by means of selected statistical parameters (e.g.) basing on provisions of the fuzzy set theory for the value of space represented by the open space index, characterized by parameters of descriptive statistics. These methods will be presented using several examples of open space value estimation procedures in LandSat photos and DEM models from the region of Nigeria. The presentation will continue with selected methods being used for identifycation and determination of the range of uniform scenic value zones and transitional zones. Cartometric extractions of outlines of scenic units as basic fields of evaluation will be shown, types of landscape discussed and basic statistics describing its structure presented. The authors will also refer to the issues of limits of landscape use and their practical meaning, e.g. in tourist terms. At attempt of classification and valorization of separated fields has been presented, along with estimation of the level of their uniformity, rank and usability.

The paper presents the application of RTK technology for measuring the horizontal and vertical cross-sections of the Nysa Kłodzka River located in the southern part of Poland. GPS measurements were performed by the staff of Chair of Satellite Geodesy and Navigation of University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn in cooperation with the team of the OPeGieKa Wroclaw company. The measurements had been done for 30 days during August and September 2004. Three GPS receivers were used such as two Ashtech Z-Xtreme and one Ashtech Z-Surveyor. The radiomodems Satelline of SATEL company were used for transmitting RTK corrections from a reference station to rovers. RTK measurements were being performed in very difticult observational conditions Iike in heavy shrubbery or under trees. It was excellent occasion to test reliability and accuracy of RTK positioning in practice. In general, the use of RTK technology in woodlands and rural terrain extremely improved efficiency of works, but gross errors were being occurred from time to time in very severe conditions of GPS observations due to the lack of good satellite geometry and availability.

Opis:
Monitoring of the Earth Surface using SAR satellite radar is an increasingly used tool in case of natural and anthropological hazards (Perski 1999). Differential Interferometry SAR (DInSAR) and Persistent Scatterer Interferometry SAR (PSInSAR) are satellite SAR radar interferometry methods. These are well-known and widely used tools for detecting ground deformation (Porzycka & Leśniak 2010). New generation of SAR antennas provide the imagery with sub-meter resolution. It allows for computing very accurate interferograms capable for slow and dynamic subsidence detection over even small areas. These properties of SAR technology are very important in case of heavily populated mining regions, where comes to damage to residential buildings (Mirek 2012). Studies presented in this paper refer to the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (South Poland), which is vulnerable to the subsidence phenomenon. The aim of this study was to determine the applicability of the interferometric analysis of different zones in Upper Silesian Coal Basin. In this area subsidence occurs at different rates and can be divided into slow displacement with wide range and dynamic subsidence of small areas. In the described work the analysis of ground deformation was performed using Sentinel-1A data acquired in Interferometric Wide Swath Mode (IWS) with 12 days revisit and 5 × 20 meters ground resolution. Free and open access to Sentinel-1 satellite data are granted for the Copernicus programme. It is focused on global coverage and quick data delivery (ESA website). The obtained results show the capabilities and limitations of this technology in case of vertical ground deformation velocity compared to its range. The relationship between the spatial resolution of the imagery and the dynamics of subsidence was presented. Finally the possibility of using PSInSAR method with Sentinel-1A data was presented (Strzelczyk & Porzycka-Strzelczyk 2014).

The objective of this paper is to present an automatic monitoring system for the 3D CEMBS model in the operational version. This predictive, eco hydrodynamic model is used as a tool to control the conditions and bio productivity of the Baltic sea environment and to forecast physical and ecological changes in the studied basin. Satellite-measured data assimilation is used to constrain the model and achieve higher accuracy of its results. 3D CEMBS is a version of the Community Earth System Model, adapted for the Baltic Sea. It consists of coupled ocean and ice models, working in active mode together with the ecosystem module. Atmospheric forecast from the UM model (Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling of the Warsaw University) are used as a forcing fields feed through atmospheric data model. In addition, river inflow of freshwater and nutrient deposition from 71 main rivers is processed by land model. At present, satellite data from AQUA MODIS, processed by the SatBałtyk project Operational System are used for the assimilation of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll a concentration. In the operational mode, 48-hour forecasts are produced at six-hour intervals, providing a wide range of hydrodynamic and biochemical parameters.

Presently a lot of countries carry out aviation tests of Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast ADB-S). The on-board GPS receiver is used as a basic source of information on position and time for that system. According to the CNS/ATM plan, traditional radars using by ATC will be replaced for ADB-S in the near future. One the vital elements of the system is Global Navigational Satellite System (GNSS). According to the project a research team is going to work out an aviation tracking system for control an air traffic and ground movement in the border area. Moreover, the team will examine the system in the areas of accuracy, range of tracking and reliability as well. The proposed system consists of three basic components: the positioning, airborne GNSS receivers, the transmission of data and the ground station. The research plan is carried out taking into account a variety of air operations, such as a takeoff, a route on a low height, approaching and landing. The idea of monitoring system for aircraft using satellite navigation systems is in line witch the concept of the use of GNSS in aviation, both in Europe and worldwide.

The dynamics of the cultural landscape is associated with the penetration of people into the natural landscape, the settling and adaptation to the needs of the society and its development. Climate creates the decisive influence, specifically the form of extremely high rainfall causing flooding. Adverse impact on the cultural agricultural landscape is mainly the submersion time. This time depends on the configuration of the terrain, its disposition and the existing drainage ditches in the area, ensuring the drainage of the flood to the recipients. Long-lasting floods have stipulated taking measures for the protection of the area from flooding by building dikes and drainage of the flood from the area. Identifying the extent of extreme floods and zones of permanent waterlogging is currently provided by modern technology which allows recording satellite images in different spectral bands. Within the basic distinguishing signs mainly accruing is used and it is possible to track changes of the extent of flooded areas and thus identify problem areas insufficiently protected against long-term flooding. Consequently, it is possible to solve the concept of exploiting such areas to keep them in the structure of PPF or their reclassification in wetland systems with necessary legislative security. The aim of this paper is to show the possibility of using satellite images in identifying the extent of flooding.

Contemporary geodesy is of global dimension. The reference frame is defined as the geocentric system with parameters related to the entire Earth body, e.g. the axis of rotation, and global geoid. The unified time scale is determined for the whole Earth territory as well. International services using different satellite techniques are engaged in the determination of this frame. Particularly important is the Global Positioning System GPS, which is the most important geodetic tool nowadays. In Poland a number of geodetic observatories are working in the frame of the international networks, Polish scientific groups contribute to the advancement of science in this domain. For the practical applications we are using the local networks that again are constructed with satellite techniques. In Europe the regional network EUREF exists while its part EUREF-POL and densification POLREF are in Poland. The modern network ASG-EUPOS is under construction. The GPS technique is used for surveying and navigation and for the positioning in motion, which is in-between the preceding traditional methods. Differential augmentation methods are designed to improve GPS signals such as DGPS and EGNOS. The new European satellite navigation system Galileo is in development. Poland is a member and coowner of this system. A number of Polish research institutions are working on new methods of the practical application of GNSS.

The article concerns issues pertaining to satellite geodesy and the possibilities of using the available source materials such as high-resolution satellite maps for selected works which require a high degree of accuracy in determining the location of topographic objects. The purpose of the work was to indicate the potential use of Google Earth maps for selected geodetic works (preparing topographic descriptions, sketch maps) in order to facilitate and accelerate the process. Works were carried out in an urban area, Wolności Square in Poznań (Poland) where 58 checkpoints were located. In order to design them, maps from the Google system from four periods were used. The research used the Global Navigation Satellite Systems set consisting of a Leica GS08 + satellite receiver and a Leica CS15 controller, geodetic software for work design (Trimble GNSS Planning Online) and calculations (C-Geo 8) as well as cartographic materials and data obtained from the Municipal Center of Geodetic and Cartographic Documentation in Poznań: the master map, catalog data and topographic descriptions of the reference points. The results show that the accuracy of the location of points offered by Google is greater than declared by the system operators. However, it is not sufficient for applications in the assumed geodetic works.

In this paper, volumetric losses in a positive displacement pump supplied with water and mineral oil are described and compared. The experimental tests were conducted using a prototype of a satellite pump (with a non-circular tooth working mechanism). In this paper, the sources of volumetric losses in this pump are characterized. On this basis, a mathematical model of these losses has been presented. The results of the calculation of volumetric losses according to the model are compared with the results of the experiment. Experimental studies have shown that the volumetric losses in the water pump are even 3.2 times greater than the volumetric losses in the oil pump. It has been demonstrated that the mathematical model describing the volumetric losses both in the water pump and in the oil pump is quite good. It has been found that the results from the loaded pump simulation (at Δp=25MPa and ant n=1500rpm) differ from the results of the experiment by no more than 5% both for oil and water.

In this paper volumetric losses in hydraulic motor supplied with water and mineral oil (two liquids having significantly different viscosity and lubricating properties) are described and compared. The experimental tests were conducted using an innovative hydraulic satellite motor, that is dedicated to work with different liquids, including water. The sources of leaks in this motor are also characterized and described. On this basis, a mathematical model of volumetric losses and model of effective rotational speed have been developed and presented. The results of calculation of volumetric losses according to the model are compared with the results of experiment. It was found that the difference is not more than 20%. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that this model well describes in both the volumetric losses in the motor supplied with water and oil. Experimental studies have shown that the volumetric losses in the motor supplied with water are even three times greater than the volumetric losses in the motor supplied with oil. It has been shown, that in a small constant stream of water the speed of the motor is reduced even by half in comparison of speed of motor supplied with the same stream of oil.

Opis:
Current concept of interferometric missions assume that they employ formations of spacecraft. The cooperation between members of a multisatellite formation is a challenging problem. One of the main difficulties is to implement a reliable system for position control and actuation. A precise control of the position and orientation of each satellite in the array is a key factor in obtaining high quality images of distant objects. The controlling system should frequently collect data about geometry and kinematics of all array elements and use actuators to keep them as close as possible to their nominal positions. Forces that are required for actuation or array reconfiguration in space can be produced by engines of various types. In most cases chemical propulsion is used, with a drawback of limited fuel resources and a danger of polluting optical elements. In our work, we analyze dynamics of satellite formation flight, in which interaction forces result from electromagnetic fields generated by coils with current. We use simple controller equation proposed by members of MIT team to control a formation of two or three aligned satellites rotating around the array's mass center.

Opis:
The transport sector requires efficient and accurate traffic management systems in airspace, on land and at sea. European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) may be part of these systems. However admission to its use in Poland requires analysis whether it fulfil international standards. This paper presents such verification of the EGNOS usefulness for: air, sea, road and rail Polish transport. Therefore, conducted a characterization and analysis of four parameters of the signal (accuracy, integrity, continuity and availability) based on data from the EGNOS Data Collection Network in the years 2011-2012. Monitored parameters were compared with current international requirements for the signals of satellite systems in force in the various types of transport. This allowed to determine whether the EGNOS system can be used in them.

Opis:
One of important problems in aerospace engineering is to determine the amount of fluid in the tank in a microgravity environment. There are several methods for doing it, however, there are no proven methods to quickly gauge the amount of propellant in a tank in low gravity conditions. New and more accurate methods of such a measurement are being continually searched for. One of interesting solutions is using Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) for this purpose. The article presents both numerical analysis and experimental test results using a spherical tank. The main purpose of the simulation was to determine the effect of the number of electrodes and noise signal level on the quality of reconstruction images. In numerical simulations, different models of dielectric permittivity distribution have been reconstructed. On the basis of numerical simulations, a 24-electrode sensor was designed and made. In experimental tests, different distribution of medium inside the spherical tank was investigated. The results show that the method can directly measure the mass of fuel in the tank, as well as it allows for a visualization of fuel distribution, independent of the tank position in space, and the liquid-propellant system will be used.
Trwają poszukiwania nowych i dokładniejszych metod pomiaru.

Opis:
The paper concerns radio amateur satellites that are built by international student teams. For contacting a satellite, a single ground station is usually used. In this configuration and with the satellite on the low Earth orbit (LEO), teams have contact only for about 40 minutes per day. If the satellite has service for radio amateurs, they use it for 20 hours per day. A lot of them have connection to Internet. This is a big difference. In this paper, is shown how they can use the radio amateur transceivers and antenna systems in order to build ground stations network named distributed ground station system (DGSS). Frequencies, types of modulations, calculation of power budge, and the ways to control amateur stations by the Internet are also shown. These are essential procedures, because radio amateurs have their standards and habits. Finally a proposal of implementation dedicated DGSS system for radio amateurs with and without use of APRS network is put forward. Distributed ground station is one of the experiments on PW-Sat satellite, which is being build on the Warsaw University of Technology.
