The microstructure and resultant mechanical properties of the MM55 manganese brass applied to ship sand - cast propeller were investigated in relation to the propeller blade section thickness. It was stated that the increase of blade section thickness from 15 mm to 45 mm resulted in the increase of the volume fraction of alpha-phase by 5.3% and that of k-phase by 23.7%, the decrease of the volume fraction of betha-phase by 2.9%, the 0.2% proof stress R0.2 by 11.3%, the ultimate tensile strength Rm by 5.5% and the 5.65 So elongation A5 by 16.8%.

The recent trend of using aluminium alloys instead of steel has reached the transportation industry, where increasingly, more parts are made of aluminium. An example is the belt pulley, applied for combustion engines for energy transmission. This part should be strong, durable, and lightweight. Aluminium-silicon alloys are a good choice, moreover, even when the surface is anodised, also because of their moderate inertia control and excellent wear characteristic during mechanical operations. Since aluminium is lightweight yet mechanically durable and anodised, it is an ideal belt pulley to use, especially in high-temperature operations. However, the main question is what type of Al-Si alloy, casting method and anodisation method should be used in terms of energy adsorption, having long-term properties for a lifetime, has to be applied. For this reason, this paper presents the influence of the chemical composition, casting method and anodising parameters on the structure and thickness of the anodic layer produced on aluminium alloys, as well as on the albedo value as an ability to reflect or absorb light. The aluminium alloys, AlSi12Cu1 and AlSi9Cu3, were used as research materials, obtained using different casting methods. The goal of this work was to determine the optimal combination of the anodisation conditions and materials for maximising the reflectivity factor of the surface, as a very important factor, determining the energy amount absorbed by an anodised surface. For further improvement of these surface properties as well as for enhancement of the properties and strengthen the material produced with different aluminium alloys production methods, different alloying additives were added. In addition, the mechanical properties of the surface layer were measured, where a remarkable hardness increase was obtained, and the best combination in form of AlSi12Cu1 high pressure cast was found with the highest albedo factor among all tested surface variants.

This paper deals with the issue of using moulding sands with a new two-component binder: furfuryl-resole resin – PCL polycaprolactone for the production of ductile iron heavy castings. The previous laboratory studies showed the possibility of using biodegradable materials as binders or parts of binders’ compositions for foundry moulding and core sands. The research proved that addition of new biodegradable PCL in the amount of 5% to the furfuryl-resole resin does not cause significant changes in moulding sand’s properties. The article presents research related to the production of ductile iron castings with the use of moulds with a modified composition, i.e. sands with furfuryl resole resin with and without PCL. Mechanical properties and microstructure of the casting surface layer at the metal/ mould interface are presented. The obtained test results indicate that the use of a biodegradable additive for making foundry moulds from moulding sand with a two-component binder does not deteriorate the properties of ductile iron castings.

This article discusses the issues concerning the quality of casting surface with a small unit weight manufactured on the Disamatic automatic casting lines in a flaskless mould with a vertical parting line. The research was conducted in manufacturing conditions in one of the casting facilities in the country. The identification of casting defects for a monthly manufacturing cycle was made and agreed that the main causes of scrap casting are defects on the raw surface: lumps of moulding sand which after removal form cavities and draws as well as defects of gas origin such as blowholes. There are also defects of form namely short runs. In the later part of the work, the research results of the properties of moulding sand were presented and casting defects were selected the occurrence of which is connected with the quality of moulding sands.

The article is discussing authors examinations concerning the influence of the sulphur diffusion from moulding sand on reduction the efficiency of modifier elements in the process of making the nodular cast iron. In case of magnesium decrease of its content is observe, as a result of forming the magnesium sulphide. In consequence the participation of magnesium is falling below the concentration essential to create a spheroid graphite. The source of sulphur in no-bake sand with resin modified by furfuryl alcohol is a hardener, on the basis of sulphonic acids and sulphuric acid. Described examinations relate to no-bake sands made on the warp of fresh quartz sand.

Drops of molten cast iron were placed on moulding sand substrates. The composition of the forming gaseous atmosphere was examined. It was found that as a result of the cast iron contact with water vapour released from the sand, a significant amount of hydrogen was evolved. In all the examined moulding sands, including sands without carbon, a large amount of CO was formed. The source of carbon monoxide was carbon present in cast iron. In the case of bentonite moulding sand with sea coal and sand bonded with furan resin, in the composition of the gases, the trace amounts of hydrocarbons, i.e. benzene, toluene, styrene and naphthalene (BTX), appeared. As the formed studies indicate much higher content of BTX at lower temperature it was concluded that the hydrocarbons are unstable in contact with molten iron.

Gas atmosphere at the sand mould/cast alloy interface determines the quality of the casting obtained. Therefore the aim of this study was to measure and evaluate the gas forming tendency of selected moulding sands with alkyd resins. During direct and indirect gas measurements, the kinetics of gas evolution was recorded as a function of the temperature of the sand mixture undergoing the process of thermal destruction. The content of hydrogen and oxygen was continuously monitored to establish the type of the atmosphere created by the evolved gases (oxidizing/reducing). The existing research methodology [1, 7, 8] has been extended to include pressure-assisted technique of indirect measurement of the gas evolution rate. For this part of the studies, a new concept of the measurement was designed and tested. This article presents the results of measurements and compares gas emissions from two sand mixtures containing alkyd resins known under the trade name SL and SL2002, in which the polymerization process is initiated with isocyanate. Studies of the gas forming tendency were carried out by three methods on three test stands to record the gas evolution kinetics and evaluate the risk of gas formation in a moulding or core sand. Proprietary methods for indirect evaluation of the gas forming tendency have demonstrated a number of beneficial aspects, mainly due to the ability to record the quantity and composition of the evolved gases in real time and under stable and reproducible measurement conditions. Direct measurement of gas evolution rate from the tested sands during cast iron pouring process enables a comparison of the results with the results obtained by indirect methods.

We documented that the Wartanian (younger Saalian) Lower Rogowiec Till exposed at Bełchatów, central Poland, is not sedimentologically or structurally homogeneous, and suggested that the till macrofabric patterns and deformation structures may be related to stress conditions in the glacier at the time of deposition. The distribution of deformation structures below and within the till forms a pattern, most probably associated with compressive flow and/or with stronger stress reaction, creating stronger fabrics, above clay beds due to high pore water pressure. The intervening areas, lacking deformation structures, occur between the zones of compression, where pressure would have been less. These patterns occur in a repeated sequence along the sections, which suggests that there may be a control, such as basal glacier stress conditions. The sites showing deformation occur about every 10–20 m. This could imply that the zones of shearing at the ice front have a similar spacing. There are no features in the pattern of the till macrofabrics and deformation structures to suggest that the local Kleszczów Graben or a pre-existing valley had any effect on the mode of till deposition.

High-manganese cast steels are characterised by a high abrasion resistance under friction conditions with a simultaneous influence of pressure and impacts. This cast steel is especially suitable for castings of excavator’s scoops, track links, streetcars crossovers, parts of crushers and mills for braking up of hard materials [1-4]. In order to obtain high quality castings of high-manganese cast steels in moulds on the high-silica sand matrices it is necessary to apply protective coatings, which prevent a direct contact between metal and matrix (SiO2). Manganese after being poured into a mould can undergo a partial oxidation forming MnO, which reacts with silica. As a result low-melting manganese silicates are formed, which in a form of a tight layer adhere to the casting surface, significantly increasing a labour input related to cleaning. Three kinds of protective coatings were tested: zirconium, corundum and magnesite. As a base moulding sands on high-silica sand matrices with three kinds of resol resins were applied. The quality of the obtained casting surface was assessed in dependence of the protective coating and resin kind and also in dependence of the metallostatic pressure value.
Staliwo wysokomanganowe odznacza się dużą odpornością na ścieranie w warunkach tarcia z jednoczesnym działaniem nacisku i uderzeń. Staliwo to nadaje się szczególnie na odlewy czerpaków koparek, ogniwa gąsienic traktorów, krzyżownic tramwajowych, części kruszarek i młynów do rozdrabniania twardych materiałów [1-4]. Aby uzyskać wysokiej jakości odlewy ze staliwa wysokomanganowego w masach na osnowie piasku kwarcowego konieczne jest stosowanie powłok ochronnych, które zapobiegają bezpośredniemu kontaktowi metalu z osnową, a konkretnie z SiO2. Mangan, po zalaniu metalu do formy może ulegać częściowemu utlenieniu tworząc m.in. MnO, który reaguje z krzemionką. W wyniku tworzaąsię niskotopliwe krzemiany manganu, które szczelną warstwą przylegają do powierzchni odlewu, znacznie zwiększając nakład pracy na oczyszczanie. Przebadano trzy rodzaje powłok ochronnych: cyrkonowa, korundowa i magnezytowa. Jako podłoże stosowano masy na osnowie piasku kwarcowego z trzema rodzajami żywicy rezolowej. Oceniano jakość uzyskiwanej powierzchni odlewu w zalezności od rodzaju powłoki ochronnej, rodzaju zywicy oraz wielkości ciśnienia metalostatycznego.

W artykule omówiono wpływ dodatku regeneratu uzyskiwanego w procesie regeneracji mechanicznej do masy z żywicą furfurylową na osnowie piasku kwarcowego. Określono wpływ udziału regeneratu na takie parametry masy jak: wytrzymałość na rozciąganie, ścieralność, przepuszczalność i żywotność masy. Badania prowadzono przy udziale regeneratu w osnowie w ilości od 20 do 100%. Uzyskane wyniki wykazały, że optymalne właściwości, uzyskuje masa o składzie 60% regeneratu, 1 cz. mas. żywicy i 0,5 cz. mas. utwardzacza.
The influence of an addition of the reclaim, obtained in the mechanical reclamation process, to the moulding sand prepared on the basis of the high-silica sand with furfuryl resin, was discussed in the paper. The influence of the reclaim fraction on such moulding sand parameters as: tensile strength, wear resistance, permeability and bench life, was determined. Tests were performed at the reclaim fraction in the matrix being from 20 to 100%. The obtained results indicated that the optimal properties were exhibited by the moulding sand containing 60% of the reclaim, 40% new sand and 1 part by weigh of a resin and 0.5 part by weight of a hardener.

The purposes of this study were to investigate the impact of proportions of cast iron scrap, steel scrap, carbon and ferro silicon on hardness and the quality of cast iron and to obtain an appropriate proportion of the four components in iron casting process using a mixture experimental design, analysis of variance and response surface methodology coupled with desirability function. Monte Carlo simulation was used to demonstrate the impacts of different proportions of the four components by varying the proportions of components within ±5% of the four components. Microstructures of the cast iron sample obtained from a company and the cast iron samples casted with the appropriate proportions of the four components were examined to see the differences of size and spacing of pearlite particle. The results showed that linear mixture components were statistically significant implying a high proportion of total variability for hardness of the cast iron samples explained by the casting mixtures of raw materials. The graphite of the sample casted from the appropriate proportion has shorter length and more uniform distribution than that from the company. When varying percentages of the four components within ±5% of the appropriate proportion, simulated hardness values were in the range of 237 to 256 HB.

When cast steel castings are made in moulding sands on matrices of high-silica sand, which has a low fire resistance the problem of the so-called chemical penetration is distinctly visible. Whereas this effect appears to a small degree only when moulding sand matrices are of chromite, zircon or olivine sands. Therefore in case of making castings of high-manganese cast steel (e.g. Hadfield steel) sands not containing free silica should be applied (e.g. olivine sand) or in case of a high-silica matrix protective coatings for moulds and cores should be used. Two protective coatings, magnesite alcoholic (marked as coating 1 and coating 2) originated from different producers and intended for moulds for castings of the Hadfield steel, were selected for investigations. Examinations of the basic properties were performed for these coatings: viscosity, thermal analysis, sedimentation properties, wear resistance. In order to estimate the effectiveness of protective coatings the experimental castings were prepared. When applying coating 1, the surface quality of the casting was worse and traces of interaction between the casting material (cast steel) and the coating were seen. When protective coating 2 was used none interactions were seen and the surface quality was better.

This paper constitutes the second part of the article concerning the implementation of the two-layer mould technology for steel casts in Z.M. POMET. The results of the laboratory examinations of the backing sand with the inorganic binder RUDAL were presented in the first part of the paper. Whereas in the second part the results of the laboratory testing of the facing sand with the alkaline resin REZOLIT are given. The technology of two-layer moulds was already implemented in Z.M. POMET within the target project. Examples of castings made in this technology are shown in the final part of this paper.
Jest to 2 część artykułu dotyczącego wdrożenia technologii form dwuwarstwowych do wykonywania odlewów staliwnych w Z.M. POMET. W części 1 przedstawiono wyniki badań laboratoryjnych masy wypełniającej ze spoiwem nieorganicznym RUDAL. Natomiast w części 2 zamieszczono wyniki badań laboratoryjnych masy przymodelowej z żywicą alkaliczną REZOLIT. Technologia form dwuwarstwowych została już wdrożona w Z.M. POMET w ramach projektu celowego. W końcowej części artykułu zamieszczono przykłady wykonanych odlewów w tej technologii.

This work presents a scheme for the manufacture of spherical grinding bodies used in grinding and crushing machinery as a grinding medium from abrasion-resistant cast iron CHKH16 (according to GOST 7769-82) free of shrinkage defects produced by casting into single sand molds with a vertical joint and by usingcoolers. The grinding efficiency in terms of material destruction and energy consumption has been studied according to a wide range of operating parameters and new scheme for calculating the sprue and supply system has been developed by the authors of the article. Its functionality has been substantiated, particularly the use of a central riser acting as a head and the use of coolers. The conducted numerical simulation has shown the dependence of a solid phase formation over time, which characterizes the direction of the system crystallization and determines the locations of the shrinkage defects concentration. The manufacture of the grinding body with a 100 mm diameter using the considered technology is presented in this paper.

Kruszywa znajdują szerokie zastosowanie zarówno w budownictwie liniowym jak i kubaturowym. W ostatnich latach, pod względem ilościowego zapotrzebowania, nieznacznie chłonniejszym segmentem jest budownictwo liniowe. Po zakończeniu realizacji dużych inwestycji infrastrukturalnych, współfinansowanych ze środków UE, budownictwo kubaturowe stanie się jednak największym konsumentem kruszyw. Ze względu na brak dokładnych informacji o zużyciu kruszyw w tym segmencie budownictwa, a w szczególności regionalnym jego rozkładzie, zachodzi potrzeba oszacowania jednostkowych wskaźników ich zużycia w różnych typach obiektów kubaturowych. W pracy przedstawiono statystyczny obraz zapotrzebowania na kruszywa do produkcji betonu w zależności od wybranych cech budynków jednorodzinnych. Jako podstawę do określenia jednostkowego zużycia kruszyw przyjęto ilość betonu zestawioną w dokumentacjach projektowych oraz średnią zawartość kruszyw w mieszance betonowej. Zużycie kruszyw określono względem takich cech budynku, jak: powierzchnia zabudowy, powierzchnia całkowita, powierzchnia użytkowa, kubatura. Dokonano również oceny zużycia w zależności od rozwiązań konstrukcyjnych stropów oraz ważniejszych cech architektonicznych, tj. liczby kondygnacji nadziemnych i podziemnych. Z przeprowadzonych analiz wynika, że zużycie kruszyw zależy zarówno od wielkości budowanego domu, ale też od jego typu architektoniczno-konstrukcyjnego. [...]
Natural aggregates are widely used both in ribbon and volumetric construction. In respect of quantitative demand, ribbon construction has been definitely much more receptive in recent years. After completion of implementation of large infrastructural investments, co-financed by EU funds, volumetric construction will become one of major directions of sale of aggregates. Due to a lack of accurate information about consumption of aggregates in this construction segment, it is important to estimate the unit consumption ratios in different types of volumetric structures. The thesis presents the statistical image of demand for aggregates depending on selected features of single-family buildings. The basis assumed for determining unit consumption of aggregates is the amount of concrete juxtaposed in design documentations and average content of aggregates in concrete mix. Consumption of aggregates has been defined in respect of such features of a building as: building area, total area, usable area, volume. Also, consumption was assessed depending on structural solutions of ceilings and major architectonic features: the number of storeys above ground and underground.
