Opis:
Thai food industry employs a massive number of skilled and unskilled workers. This may result in an industry with high incidences and accident rates. To improve safety and reduce the accident figures, this paper investigates factors influencing safety implementation in small, medium, and large food companies in Thailand. Five factors, i.e., management commitment, stakeholders’ role, safety information and communication, supportive environment, and risk, are found important in helping to improve safety implementation. The statistical analyses also reveal that small, medium, and large food companies hold similar opinions on the risk factor, but bear different perceptions on the other 4 factors. It is also found that to improve safety implementation, the perceptions of safety goals, communication, feedback, safety resources, and supervision should be aligned in small, medium, and large companies.

A lot of attention has been focused on workers’ perceptions of workplace safety but relatively little or no research has been done on the impact of job satisfaction on safety climate. This study investigated this relationship. It also examined the relationships between job satisfaction and workers’ compliance with safety management policies and accident frequency. A positive association was found between job satisfaction and safety climate. Workers who expressed more satisfaction at their posts had positive perceptions of safety climate. Correspondingly, they were more committed to safety management policies and consequently registered a lower rate of accident involvement. The results were thus consistent with the notion that workers’ positive perceptions of organizational climate influence their perceptions of safety at the workplace. The findings, which have implications in the work environment, are discussed.

Globalization and trade among developed and developing countries has increased the need of risk communication at the workplace. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in risk communication and perception in various countries. It looked at hazard perception associated with colors and safety words among Indian industry workers. Fifty workers participated in the study focused on hazard rating of 9 safety words and 7 colors. In one part of the study the participants were asked to associate colors with safety words through recalling them from their long-term memory; in another they were asked to associate safety words with given colors. The results showed that certain words and colors implied different hazard rating at the workplace. The rank ordering of safety words and colors varied significantly in different countries. Hence population factors should be taken into consideration when designing standards for hazard communication.

The purpose of this paper is to develop and test a theoretical model that explains that the impact of consumer perceptions of apparel safety on their consumption behavior is moderated by consumers’ attitude and the price in the relationship studied. A survey questionnaire was developed and conducted first in a pretest by 231 participants to initially identify possible measurement problems. Another 321 potential consumers subsequently filled in the questionnaire on our website, out of which 296 questionnaires were used to verify the validity and reliability by statistical analysis and the structural equation model. The paper identifies a set of apparel safety perception dimensions that do not drive safe consumption practices. It is further seen that price is more likely to moderate the relationship with consumer behaviors than perceptions and attitudes. Therefore, the paper significantly fills the gaps between apparel safety perceptions and apparel safety consumption behavior. The findings of the paper have significant implications for apparel companies who wish to explore the apparel market potential in China.

Universities are often considered to be safe sanctuaries. However, many higher education institutions have increasingly been confronted with crime and unrest. Violence and other crimes on campuses are currently an international concern. This paper reports on a study that investigated student’s perceptions of safety on two campuses namely Lahti University of Applied Sciences in Finland and the North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Theories from Environmental Psychology and Urban Planning are combined in this study in order to incorporate aspects of the individual, social setting and spatial environment. Increasing people’s safety help to optimise their experience of their environment and can in turn create an enabling context for people to flourish and improve their quality of life. The research followed a qualitative research approach. In this study, 21 participants from a Finnish university and 16 participants from a South African university were selected through purposive sampling. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews supported by visual data of the spatial environment. All data were transcribed verbatim and analysed through qualitative content analysis. The literature and findings of the research both support that the spatial and social environment influences safety. It is therefore recommended that safe campus environments require a multi-disciplinary and integrated approach to proactively develop a Comprehensive Safe Environment Plan (CSEP). From a planning perspective, students’ perceptions of campus environments’ safety may include the creation of compact dedicated campus areas, land uses, building placing and orientation, territoriality, landscaping, visibility, control over fear-inducing activities, maintenance, security measures and pedestrian orientated areas.

Osiągnięcie zrównoważonego systemu transportu w Europie wiąże się z koniecznością wprowadzania innowacyjnych rozwiązań, które wspomogą mobilność i będą miały pozytywny wpływ na wzrost gospodarczy i zatrudnienie w Europie. W odniesieniu do zrównoważonego transportu drogowego aspekty bezpieczeństwa mają być zharmonizowane z wymogami środowiska i ekonomii. Praca obejmuje krótkie przedstawienie istoty koncepcji zrównoważonego transportu i trendów występujących w zrównoważonym rozwoju transportu drogowego. Zinwentaryzowane zostały uwarunkowania postrzegania przestrzeni, w szczególności przestrzeni transportu drogowego, które odgrywa decydującą rolę z uwagi na bezpieczeństwo ruchu. Percepcja przestrzeni transportu drogowego jest kompleksową współzależnością fizycznych i socjalnych czynników, poszczególnych indywidualności i grup społecznych, jest interaktywna i dynamiczna. Zaprezentowano modele teoretyczne procesu percepcji środowiska i metody pomiaru percepcji w bezpieczeństwie dróg. Analizy teoretyczne i przegląd stosowanych metod badawczych potwierdzają kolosalną rolę innowacyjnych metod wizualizacji przestrzeni transportu, umożliwiających analizę percepcji bezpieczeństwa proponowanych rozwiązań w procesie wdrażania zrównoważonego transportu drogowego.
Achievement of sustainable transport system in Europe is connected with necessity of implementation of innovative solutions supporting mobility and with positive impact on the economical growth and employment in Europe. In terms of sustainable road transport aspects of safety are to be harmonized with needs of environment and economy. This article includes short presentation of the idea of sustainable transport and trends appearing in sustainable road transport. Perception of the space conditions, especially the road transport space, which plays leading role because of the traffic safety have been reviewed. Perception of the space of road transport is a complex correlation of physical and social factors, specific individuals and groups – is interactive and dynamic. Theoretical models of the perception of the environment process have been presented as well as assessment methods of the perception of the roads safety. Theoretical analyses and review on popular research methods confirms significant role of innovative methods of visualization of the transport space enabling analyses of the safety perception of proposed solutions in the process of implementation of the sustainable road transport.

In the UK construction site dumpers cause more serious accidents than any other type of construction plant. Previous research has indicated that driver behavior plays a pivotal role in the vast majority of these accidents. This study used a paired comparison technique to explore dumper drivers’ and subject matter experts’ (SMEs’) risk perception and its relationship to risk-taking behavior. It was found that driver risk perception significantly differed from measures of “objective risk”, derived from accident data and also from SMEs’ risk perception. Furthermore, drivers still engaged in undertaking perceived high risk behaviors. The results suggest that driver risk perception was linked to the “perceived dread” of an accident, rather than its likelihood and that risk-taking behavior was often driven by situational factors, such as site safety rules or the behavior of other personnel on the site, together with an overarching culture that prioritizes production over safety.

W pracy przedstawiono problematykę postrzegania zagrożeń bezpieczeństwa starszych pasażerów w transporcie zbiorowym w Polsce i w siedmiu wybranych krajach UE. Celem opracowania jest ukazanie problemów z zakresu subiektywnego bezpieczeństwa oraz bezpieczeństwa osobistego osób starszych korzystających z transportu zbiorowego. Zaprezentowane wyniki badań uzyskano w efekcie studiów uwarunkowań mobilności osób starszych, prowadzonych przez autorkę w ramach międzynarodowego projektu naukowo-badawczego SIZE. W zaprezentowanych badaniach jakościowych i ilościowych projektu uczestniczyli seniorzy oraz eksperci z ośmiu krajów Europy. Wyniki badań jakości życia osób starszych w zależności od warunków mobilności ukazały wiele problemów łączących elementy bezpieczeństwa subiektywnego i obiektywnego transportu, a wypracowane propozycje rozwiązań mogących poprawić warunki mobilności w większości dotyczą bezpiecznej i przyjaznej dla użytkowników infrastruk-tury transportu zbiorowego.
This paper presents the probiems of safety perception of senior citizens in public transport in Poland and in the seven other European countries. The goal of this study was to evaluate the actual level of subjective safety and security of seniors using public transport means. Presented research results were selected frorn the effects of a large study conducted by the author in the framework of the EC project SIZE on "Life quality of senior citizens in relation to mobility conditions". In the presented qualitative and quantitative studies of the SIZE project participated seniors and experts from eight European countries. The study was based on a heuristic methods, with the use of social science' modern techniques, such as Focus Group Interyiews and In-depth Individual Interviews. The qualitative study results were further elaborated as a base of the quantitative study, namely a large standard interview conducted in all participated countries on the two representative group of subjects, seniors and experts. The results received in all countries demonstrated a relatiye coherence of seniors' and experts' attitude toward mobility and safety of seniors in public transport. Many problems related to subjective safety of senior citizens using public transport, in relation to their social needs, to costs, to comfort and to the access of public transport means were disclosed. The proposed solutions to seniors mobility are in most cases connected to the safe and friendly infrastructure of public transport.

W artykule dokonano analizy definicji bezpieczeństwa jako stanu rzeczy, w którym podmiot się znajduje. Skupiono uwagę na obiektywnym i subiektywnym postrzeganiu bezpieczeństwa. Na bazie przytoczonych poglądów podjęto próbę stworzenia aparatu pojęciowego umożliwiającego przeprowadzenie oceny stanów bezpieczeństwa i niebezpieczeństwa w korelacji z właściwą i niewłaściwą percepcją podmiotu postrzegania szans i zagrożeń w jego otoczeniu.
The article analyzes the definition of security as the state of affairs in which the subject is located. Attention was focused on objective and subjective perception of security. On the basis of the quoted views, an attempt was made to create a conceptual apparatus enabling the assessment of safety states and danger in correlation with the right and wrong perception of the subject of perceiving opportunities and threats to its environment.
