According to the assumption underlying the project, from the ontological point of view a soundscape related to a particular real space does not function as an entity shared by all potential listeners, but comes into being in the act of subjective peception which is dependent on the listener’s identity. The sonic topography of a city is an individual matter as each listener creates his own mental maps. The focal point of the project is the concept of deep listening which consists in intensified listening to everything that might be heard. By doing this, the listener introduces himself into the alert state of consciousness which enables him to detect the components of a soundscape. The project consists of three complementary parts. The first one is a poster which introduces the concept of deep listening, the other one comprises of an audiovisual installation. Two short films on the practice of listening will be presented here. They are devoted to John Cage and Pauline Oliveros, the composers particularly interested in sounds and listening. The final (practical) part od the project consists of a record of a city soundscape. It offers the chance to put the purely theoretical tenets into practice. It creates an opportunity to open one’s mind to the unplanned experience of the polyphony of a city and become sensitive to the acoustic potential of space. Cage claimed that what music is can only be determined by listening. Gernot Böhme appears to go even further when he asserts that the actual subject of music is listening itself. Practising deep listening is then an act of getting out of the habit of Weghören, resulting from the state of noise pollution typical of a postindustrial city. Finally, the project might induce to consider the question of space creation by means of sounds as well as the necessity of redefining the concept of the city itself. It is no longer the space where sounds are produced and stored, but rather the space which comes to existence in the individual act of listening to it and the space which is pure audibility. - Źródło:
