    Purpose: The article aims at evaluating the automation and robotization development status in Poland, recognizing the key factors influencing the technology development in Polish enterprises and identifying the existing support in the given scope. Design/methodology/approach: Data from secondary sources were used for the analysis in this article. The secondary data came from internal sources, such statistical offices, government administration authorities, studies and publications. Data were collected and analyzed using Excel. Findings: The data analysis performed for the automation and robotization status in Poland shows that the available statistics are highly limited. Only one institution is currently performing large-scale research on the global robotization, while automation in Polish enterprises was researched by Statistics Poland up to 2015. If there are reports containing data on the automation status, they are very limited and recognized differently. Owing to the above, data comparison from various periods of time and various industries is challenging. Originality/value (mandatory) The paper presents the detailed automation and robotization development status analysis in Poland.

    Describes the history of the plant “Gerlach & Pulst” in Ukraine since its evacuation in Kharkiv (1915) until the final liquidation of the enterprise as a machine-tool in 1925. Analyzes the work of the plant in contexts: existing social and political situation, the current status of the machine tool industry and the domestic industry as a whole. Establishes the production organization concept and the role of “Gerlach & Pulst” in the formation of Ukrainian machine-tool. Confirms leading position of the plant in global machine-tool industry in the early 20th century. Determines that the major source of the company success in Ukraine was a highly qualified staff of the workers and employees who had evacuated from Poland. Lack of adequate labor force in the region led to the fact that after the homecoming of the Polish contingent there was no one to effectively use the available production capacity, and the factory as a machine-tool company lost its importance and was disbanded. Nevertheless, with the growth of regional scientific and technical knowledge, the organizational principles and production technology introduced by “Gerlach & Pulst” workers in Ukraine were developed in the newly organized local machine-tool plants.
    Opisano historię warszawskiej fabryki obrabiarek „Gerlach i Pulst” od czasu ewakuacji do Charkowa (1915 r.) do jej likwidacji ostatecznej jako zakładu warsztatowego w 1925 r. Przeanalizowano pracę fabryki w kontekstach: ówczesnej sytuacji społeczno-politycznej, prądów rozwoju przemysłu obrabiarkowego i przemysłu krajowego w ogóle. Przedstawiono koncepcję organizacji produkcji i rolę „Gerlach i Pulst” w tworzeniu obrabiarkowego przemysłu ukraińskiego. Potwierdzono wiodącą pozycję fabryki w światowym przemyśle obrabiarkowym. Określono, że głównym źródłem udanej pracy zakładu na Ukrainie była wykwalifikowana załoga, która została ewakuowana z Polski. Brak odpowiedniego zaplecza zawodowego w okręgu spowodował, że po powrocie kontyngentu polskiego do ojczyzny nie było kim efektywnie obsadzić istniejących obiektów przemysłowych, ze względu na to, że fabryka jako zakład obrabiarkowy straciła wartość i została zamknięta. Jednak zasady organizacyjne i technologie produkcyjne, jakie zostały przyniesione do Ukrainy przez polskich pracowników „Gerlach i Pulst”, wniosły swój wkład w nowo organizowane lokalne obiekty tego typu.

    Preservation of the industrial landscape as an element of sustainable development – the example of Upper Silesian urban areaThe first part of the paper presents the basic terminology associated with the industrial landscape, which is a specific type of the cultural landscape, and the concepts of landscape preservation and sustainable development. In the following part of the paper, basing on the example of the Upper Silesian urban area, the typical characteristics of the industrial landscape are specified. Its most important virtues, which are the reason why it should be protected in the context of sustainable development, are also presented. The author tried to identify the obstacles to preservation of the industrial landscape, including the problem of its negative perception. The paper also contains the analysis of presently applied legal forms of preservation of the industrial landscape basing on same examples form Upper Silesia. There is also an example from Ruhr Region presented in the purpose of comparison. The demanded actions, which should take place in the Upper Silesian urban area basing on the German experiences, are presented in the summary.

    The aim of this paper is to clarify the concept of sustainable industrial development and present the results of a study on the progress in achieving goals in this field adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 2015. The research covered the Czech and Polish economies in the period 2000–2018. Under the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the need to promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation was identified. In the context of sustainable industrial development, it is emphasised that it should encourage a competitive economy, create employment, and protect the environment by efficiently utilising non‑renewable resources. To assess this phenomenon in the analysed economies, indicators identified by the UN under SDG9 were used.
    Celem artykułu jest wyjaśnienie koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju przemysłowego i przedstawienie wyników badania w zakresie postępów w osiąganiu celów w tej dziedzinie przyjętych przez Organizację Narodów Zjednoczonych (ONZ) w 2015 r. Analiza dotyczy czeskiej i polskiej gospodarki w okresie 2000–2018. Zgodnie z Agendą ONZ na rzecz Zrównoważonego Rozwoju 2030 zidentyfikowano także potrzebę promowania inkluzywnej i zrównoważonej industrializacji. W kontekście zrównoważonego rozwoju przemysłowego podkreśla się, że powinien on wspierać konkurencyjną gospodarkę, tworzyć miejsca pracy i chronić środowisko poprzez efektywne wykorzystanie zasobów nieodnawialnych. W celu oceny tego zjawiska w analizowanych gospodarkach wykorzystano wskaźniki zidentyfikowane przez ONZ w ramach SDG 9.

    The article examines the existing methods of assessing the innovation and investment image of the region and proposes an author's methodology that considers the development of the region's production and infrastructure to form a strategic policy to create and apply innovation and economic potential of the region. The research hypothesis is based on the use of the method of distance from the standard, allowing to obtain relatively objective and fair assessments of the innovation and investment image of the region, considering the leading indicators of enterprises, ensuring their differentiation by industry. Enterprises, industries, and regions in the top rankings are considered more attractive to investors in terms of innovation, economic and social development. To confirm the hypothesis, the method of assessing the innovation and investment image of the regions was considered, which begins with an empirical, theoretical study and ends with the practicality of use. A method for determining the rating of business activity of innovation-active and investment-attractive enterprises considering their territorial and sectoral affiliation has been developed. The study has a significant economic and regional impact: using this method of assessing the innovation and investment image of the regions allows investors to evaluate and select the region in which the investment proposal will consider the features and priorities of economic development of the region and industry trends.

    Reviewing the current state of knowledge on sustainable production, this paper opens the Special Section entitled “Sustainability in production in the context of Industry 4.0”. The fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), which embodies a vision for the future system of manufacturing (production), focuses on how to use contemporary methods (i.e. computerization, robotization, automation, new business models, etc.) to integrate all manufacturing industry systems to achieve sustainability. The idea was introduced in 2011 by the German government to promote automation in manufacturing. This paper shows the state of the art in the application of modern methods in sustainable manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0. The authors review the past and current state of knowledge in this regard and describe the known limitations, directions for further research, and industrial applications of the most promising ideas and technologies.

    The aim of the work is to study spatial concentration of knowledge resources and innovative activity of management entities to determine types of innovative industrial clusters in Ukraine and levers of government control of the innovative development of industrial potential. The foreign experience of innovative industrial clusters creating is analyzed and we define them as basic participants in the article. The model of innovative industrial clusters forming is worked out. The system of indicators of evaluation of the development level of intellectual and economic constituents is offered in order to distinguish innovative industrial clusters in Ukraine. The integral index of the intellectual constituent development is calculated and the ranking of administrative-territorial units is conducted by the mentioned index. The clustering of administrative-territorial units is conducted by the method of indistinct S-averages taking into account indexes of innovative activity, that characterize the state of the economic constituent development. The basic types of innovative industrial clusters are distinguished based on the comparison of levels of the intellectual and economic constituents development. It was defined that an important problem for Ukraine, that is necessary to overcome in the nearest perspective, is absence of the close collaboration among science and business structures. Creation of innovative clusters of the mixed type is considered as the modern basis of the industrial potential development that will assist to transfer innovations, to increase the competitiveness of spatial development and the national economy on the whole. The state, as the third participant of the cluster, should play the role of the regulator of this cooperation. The levers of the state stimulation of the industrial potential development on the innovative basis for certain types of innovative industrial clusters are offered in the article.

    Zasoby dziedzictwa budowlanego w Polsce stanowią istotny potencjał zrównoważonego rozwoju. Projekty rehabilitacji i rewitalizacji dawnej substancji budowlanej mogą dobrze służyć zaspokojeniu palących potrzeb społeczeństwa, oferując nowe potrzebne funkcje. Konstrukcje starych budowli przemysłowych, w odróżnieniu od współczesnych obiektów produkcyjnych wykonywano z trwałych materiałów. W związku z tym, kierując się podstawową zasadą zrównoważonego rozwoju, że "... aktualne użytkowanie zasobów dziedzictwa nie niweczy szansy przekazania ich przyszłym pokoleniom ...", można w pełni je wykorzystać i użytkować wkomponowując nierzadko jako elementy obiektów współczesnych.
    Poland's building heritage provides a significant potential for sustainable development. Projects involving the rehabilitation and revitalization of former building stock may help to satisfy society's keenly felt needs, providing new and needed functions. The structures of old industrial buildings, in contrast to modern production facilities, were made from durable materials. Therefore, guided by the basic principle of sustainable development - that the current usage of heritage sites does not prevent their being passed on to future generations - it is possible to make full use of these sites while often composing them as elements of modern buildings.

    W artykule przedstawiono odautorską wizję roli kultury ekologicznej jak czynnika stabilnego rozwoju regionów przemysłowych we współczesnych warunkach. Uściśla się naukowe rozumienie treści i struktury kultury ekologicznej. Na podstawie wyników badań socjologicznych autorzy uzasadniają tezę, że poziom kultury ekologicznej zarówno ludności, jak i przedstawicieli biznesu na Ukrainie, między innymi w Krzyworoskim Regionie Przemysłowym pozostaje na niedostatecznym poziomie. Rozwijana jest myśl o konieczności doskonalenia państwowej polityki ekologicznej i wychowania ekologicznego w sferze edukacji.
    The article is deal with ecological culture as a factor of sustainable development of industrial regions in modern conditions. The scientific understanding of the content and structure of ecological culture is specified. Based on the results of sociological research, the authors substantiate the level of environmental culture of both the population and business representatives in Ukraine, including Krivoy Rog is insufficient. It is necessary to improve the state environmental policy and environmental education.

    Przeprowadzone badania miały udzielić odpowiedzi na pytanie „Czy funkcja przemysłowa może współegzystować z funkcją uzdrowiskową? Czy słusznie przekształcono uzdrowisko w ośrodek przemysłowy?”. Zwrócono uwagę na występujący nadal potencjał uzdrowiskowy w byłym uzdrowisku Jastrzębie-Zdrój. Druga połowa lat 40. i początek lat 50. XX wieku, to okres niezwykłego jego rozkwitu jako ośrodka uzdrowiskowego. Odbudowywano, zmodernizowano wybudowane wcześniej tj. przed II wojną światową zakłady lecznicze. Zadanie to w tamtym okresie stanowiło priorytet dla władz lokalnych, bowiem zakład uzdrowiskowy był jedynym dużym pracodawcą w tym niewielkim mieście. Pomimo swojej kurortowej świetności w powojennych latach, w wyniku decyzji polityczno-społeczno-gospodarczych oraz ze względu na rozpoczętą w latach 60. XX wieku eksploatację złóż węgla kamiennego, z małego miasteczka, liczącego ponad 8 tysięcy mieszkańców, powstało duże ponad 100 tysięczne miasto przemysłowe. Pierwotnie funkcja uzdrowiskowa istniała przy niezwykle prężnie rozwijającej się funkcji przemysłowej. Okazało się, że mogły one współegzystować, a mogłoby się wydawać, że wykluczać. Ostatecznie uzdrowisko zaprzestało swoją działalność w 1994 roku z powodu zaniku wód leczniczych. Pozostały po nim liczne obiekty infrastruktury uzdrowiskowej, z przepięknym ponad 18 hektarowym Parkiem Zdrojowym. Można zadać pytanie, czy słusznie zlikwidowano uzdrowisko, dysponujące tak ogromnym potencjałem uzdrowiskowym?.
    The conducted study was aimed at answering the following question: is it possible for the industrial function to coexist with the curative function? Was it justified to convert the spa town into an industrial centre? The authors took into account the still-existing curative potential of the former Jastrzębie-Zdrój spa. The second half of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s was a time when it flourished as a therapeutic centre, with the curative facilities built before the second world war being rebuilt and modernised. The local authorities considered this to be a priority, as the spa town was the single large employer in this small town. Despite its glory as a resort in the years following the war, due to social, political and economic decisions as well as due to the exploitation of black coal which began in the 1960s, the rather miniscule town of over 8 000 inhabitants transformed into a large industrial city with more than 100 000 citizens. At first, its curative function coexisted with the rapidly developing industrial function. It turned out that it was possible for them to accompany each other, though it might have seemed before that they were mutually exclusive. The spa is no longer operative since the year 1994, when it was shut down due to a decline in curative waters. What remains are numerous elements of the spa infrastructure, including a beautiful 18 hectare Spa Park. One might wonder whether it was justified to close down a spa with such a magnificent curative potential?.

    Opis:
    Contemporary industrial and economic development, due to the dynamic progress of civilization and technology, requires significantly increased amount of energy. For this reason, we are looking for ways to use energy in a smart way, thus improving energy efficiency. One of many possibilities is to recover waste heat from energy-intensive technological processes. The process that creates a great potential for the waste heat collection and management is the process of fasteners’ heat treatment. The aim of the work is to evaluate the possibility of becoming independent from a district heating network in the production of fasteners for automotive industry plant Bulten Poland S.A. The idea is to use heat recovery systems installed on two hardening lines (air/water exchange) and on air compressors (oil/water exchange), which produce the necessary compressed air for bolts production processes. In addition, heat recovery is provided also in the oil bath of one furnace (oil/water exchange). The analyzed solution also assumes installation of two gas boilers, which will take a supporting role in case of extremely low outdoor temperatures and the necessity for increased needs for heat. An essential element of the carried out work is implementation of a superior energy management system (SyNiS), which enables efficient control of the sources’ power and the direction of heat transfer.
    Współczesny intensywny rozwój przemysłu i gospodarki, wynikający z dynamicznego postępu cywilizacyjnego i technicznego, wymaga coraz większych nakładów energii. Z tego powodu poszukiwane są możliwości wykorzystywania zużywanej energii w sposób racjonalny, dbając tym samym o poprawę efektywności energetycznej. Jedną z możliwości jest odzyskiwanie ciepła odpadowego z energochłonnych procesów technologicznych. Procesem, który stwarza duży potencjał odbioru i zagospodarowania ciepła odpadowego, jest proces obróbki cieplnej elementów złącznych. Celem pracy jest ocena możliwości uniezależnienia się od dostaw ciepła z miejskiej sieci ciepłowniczej w Zakładzie produkcyjnym elementy złączne dla przemysłu motoryzacyjnego Bulten Polska S.A. Zaproponowano wykorzystanie systemów odzysku ciepła zainstalowanych na dwóch liniach do hartowania wyrobów (wymiana powietrze–woda), oraz na sprężarkach olejowych (wymiana olej–woda), które produkują sprężone powietrze niezbędne w procesach produkcji śrub. Dodatkowo przewidziano odzysk ciepła w wannie olejowej jednego z pieców (wymiana olej–woda). Analizowane rozwiązanie zakłada również instalację dwóch kotłów gazowych, które będą pełnić rolę wspomagającą, w przypadku niższych temperatur zewnętrznych i konieczności dogrzania zakładu. Istotnym elementem przeprowadzonych prac jest wdrożenie nadrzędnego systemu zarządzania energią (SyNiS), umożliwiającego efektywne sterowanie mocą źródeł oraz kierunkiem przesyłu ciepła.

    This article is about estimation of regional development on the basis of comparative methods of research. As we know the comparative analysis of the similar functioning socio-economic systems helps us to research and understand the key factors of successful regional development, even under the conditions of internal and external shocks. At the same time the role of regions. Most local regional structures are the points of global growth. These circumstances form a new methodological approach for comparison. In the applied aspect, the examples of development of Ural industrial region (Russia) and Italian industrial districts are demonstrated.
    W artykule przeprowadzono wszechstronną analizę porównawczą poziomu rozwoju regionalnego systemów społeczno-gospodarczych w warunkach wstrząsów wewnętrznych i zewnętrznych. Uwzględnia się wpływ na rozwój regionalny nowych czynników oraz warunków, takich jak wymiar przestrzenny czy system innowacji, przez co we współczesnym rozwoju gospodarczym regionu jest określana jego zdolność do synergii w zlokalizowanych klastrach. Według autorów artykułu metodologia analizy porównawczej systemów musi być dostosowana do specyfiki regionów przemysłowych. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie takiej metodologii na przykładach rozwoju regionu przemysłowego Uralu (Rosja) i włoskich okręgów przemysłowych.
