    Opis:
    The article presents the issues related to travel and tourism, the development of this branch of service, and attempts to create alternative solutions to reduce this phenomenon’s dysfunctions. The introduction outlines the nineteenth century beginnings of tourism on the British Isles, including the setup of the first travel agency and the effects of increasing number of participants of mass tourism. The second section discusses the evolution from traveller to the tourist consumer of the commercial offer and social and environmental impacts of these changes. The third part presents the attempts to create alternatives to mass tourism with the adaptation of the rules resulting from the concept of sustainable development, and stressed the need for pro-environmental education.
    W artykule przedstawiono problemy związane z podróżami oraz turystyką, rozwojem tej gałęzi usług oraz próby tworzenia alternatywnych rozwiązań ograniczających dysfunkcyjność tego zjawiska. We wstępie zarysowano XIX-wieczne początki turyzmu na Wyspach Brytyjskich z powstaniem pierwszego biura podróży oraz skutki wzrastającej liczby uczestników turystyki masowej. Następnie omówiono ewolucję: od podróżnika do konsumenta turystycznej oferty komercyjnej oraz skutki społeczne i środowiskowe tych przemian. W części trzeciej przedstawiono próby tworzenia rozwiązań alternatywnych do turystyki masowej z adaptacją zasad wynikających z koncepcji rozwoju zrównoważonego oraz wskazano na konieczność edukacji prośrodowiskowej.

    An aspect of controversial animal tourism that has received little attention is its relationship with cultural tourism. The article presents a categorization of cultural tourism, and sports attractions and events related to the abuse of animals. It shows how tourists, driven by cultural omnivorousness and the wish to stand out from the crowd, eagerly enjoy controversial forms of animal tourism on their travel. In order to avoid the pitfall of western ethnocentrism ending in accusations of barbarism, the issue is also reflected on from an intercultural point of view, which helps to understand that local communities have different attitudes to animals and their wellbeing. In addition, a historical overview shows that ‘animal friendliness’ does not have a long tradition in western thinking about the human-animal relationship and is only of recent date. Sustainable solutions for controversial animal tourism have to be found by raising tourists’ awareness by means of information and education.

    Opis:
    Since its establishment in the 1965, the standard setting texts produced by ICOMOS have become the most reputed, influential and distributed documents concerning cultural heritage protection worldwide. An examination of all ICOMOS charters and recommendations makes clear the indispensable role of this organisation to disseminating best conservation, restoration and management practices during the last sixty years. These recommendations also show the persistence of ICOMOS in tackling the numerous pressures that challenge heritage preservation around the world. Tourism is undoubtedly one of the most important and global of these pressures due to its considerable influence at all levels of cultural heritage management and decision-making. This paper analyses the early pioneering role of ICOMOS to promote responsible tourism. It does so through an evaluation of its international cultural tourism charters from 1976, when the first was adopted, up to 2021, when the ICOMOS has adopted the ICOMOS Draft International Charter for Cultural Heritage Tourism (2021): Reinforcing cultural heritage protection and community resilience through responsible and sustainable tourism management for its adoption at the ICOMOS General Assembly in Bangkok. The long process for drafting and approving this Charter and as well as its new conceptual approaches show the emerging trends that affect cultural heritage globally and faciliate broader reflection on the future of standard setting texts on this area.
    Od momentu powstania w 1965 roku teksty ustanawiające standardy opracowane przez ICOMOS stały się najbardziej renomowanymi, wpływowymi i rozpowszechnionymi dokumentami dotyczącymi ochrony dziedzictwa kulturowego na świecie. Analiza wszystkich kart i zaleceń ICOMOS uwidacznia niezastąpioną rolę tej organizacji w rozpowszechnianiu najlepszych praktyk konserwatorskich, restauratorskich i zarządczych w ciągu ostatnich sześćdziesięciu lat. Zalecenia te pokazują również wytrwałość ICOMOS w stawianiu czoła licznym nacisków, które stanowią wyzwanie dla ochrony dziedzictwa na całym świecie. Turystyka jest niewątpliwie jedną z najważniejszych i najbardziej globalnych z tych nacisków ze względu na jej znaczący wpływ na wszystkie obszary zarządzania dziedzictwem kulturowym i podejmowania decyzji. Niniejszy artykuł analizuje wczesną pionierską rolę ICOMOS w promowaniu odpowiedzialnej turystyki. Czyni to poprzez ocenę jego międzynarodowych kart turystyki kulturowej od 1976 r., kiedy przyjęto pierwszą, do 2021 r., kiedy ICOMOS przyjął projekt Międzynarodowej Karty Turystyki Dziedzictwa Kulturowego (2021): Wzmocnienie ochrony dziedzictwa kulturowego i odporności społeczności poprzez odpowiedzialne i zrównoważone zarządzanie turystyką w celu jej przyjęcia podczas Zgromadzenia Ogólnego ICOMOS w Bangkoku. Długi proces opracowywania i zatwierdzania tej Karty, jak również jej nowe koncepcyjne podejścia pokazują pojawiające się trendy, które wpływają na dziedzictwo kulturowe w skali globalnej i ułatwiają głębszą refleksję nad przyszłością tekstów ustanawiających standardy w tej dziedzinie.

    COVID-19 has caused radical changes in the lives of people as well as economies. These changes are deemed as evolutionary and would bring a new phase of transformation. However, current practices of both people and businesses might cease once the crisis disappears. In the tourism context, going back to unsustainable and irresponsible practices would lead to the re-emergence of tourism aversion. This research note addresses the possibility that COVID-19 has only brought a temporary halt to the pre-existing issue of over-tourism and its related unsustainable practices. Even though the travel restrictions imposed by several countries amidst the spread of coronavirus have created a situation of “zero tourism”, the tourism sector has now resumed its operations in most of the world. By presenting a conceptual framework, this note stresses that if the sector continues to act in the same way as before the virus, the situation of overtourism will re-emerge in the post-COVID-19 phase. Therefore, to prevent this issue, emphasising quality tourism, inculcating responsible behaviour, and the incorporation of technology are suggested.

    Cultural tourism is a product with a strong development within the international tourism market. The cultural component is, increasingly, more present in the tourist market and configures a whole series of products, services and equipment that meet the motivations of many tourists when traveling. The consumption of the cultural offer in the destination is a common practice, both for tourists and residents, as it forms a pattern of consumption and behavior typical of the so-called advanced societies. This article will analyze the capacity of the tourism sector to promote, order and manage the set of historical assets and cultural manifestations that build up the identity of a country, territory or town in order to ensure that the cultural offer generates social and economic benefits and at the same time it is consumed in a responsible and sustainable manner in the tourist destinations.
    Turystyka kulturowa jest produktem intensywnie rozwijającym się w segmencie międzynarodowego rynku turystycznego. Element kulturowy jest coraz bardziej obecny na rynku turystycznym i stwarza całą serię produktów, usług i sprzętu, który wychodzi naprzeciw motywacjom wielu podróżujących. Wykorzystanie oferty kulturalnej u celu podróży jest powszechną praktyką zarówno turystów jak i rezydentów i kreuje wzorzec zachowań konsumenckich charakterystycznych dla tak zwanych „społeczeństw rozwiniętych”. Artykuł przedstawia analizę udziału sektora turystyki w promowaniu, porządkowaniu i zarządzaniu zasobami historycznymi oraz kulturowymi fenomenami tworzącymi tożsamość kraju, regionu lub miasta. Ma na celu ocenę, roli oferty kulturalnej w generowaniu korzyści społecznych i ekonomicznych, przy uwzględnieniu rozsądnego i zrównoważonego sposobu wykorzystania obiektów turystycznych.

    The implementation of sustainable tourism requires changes in actions and behavior of all stakeholders of the sector. Such changes should also apply to tourists. The aim of this article is the attempt to create an ideal sustainable tourist profile and evaluation of the behavior of Polish tourists visiting Podlaskie district from the point of view of sustainable tourism (mainly in environmental aspect). The research and analysis lead to the conclusion that the behavior of visitors to a large extent does not meet the requirements set by the concept of sustainable tourism and is very inconsistent.
