The article presents the possibilities of using acoustic microscopy to evaluate defects in resistance spot welding joints. For this purpose, the welded joints were made from two grades of aluminium plates EN AW5754 H24 and EN AW6005 T606, which were then subjected to non-destructive testing using acoustic microscopy and conventional destructive testing using traditional light microscopy techniques. Additionally, the study examined the influence of the typical contaminants found in industrial conditions on the quality of the joint.

The paper presents results of metallographic investigations of spot welds made of high-strength steel HSLA340 and dual-phase DP600 steel. Low-carbon martensite microstructure was found in the weld nugget of HSLA steel. The DP600 steel shows martensite and bainite microstructure. For both steels, no carbides of microadditives were found because they dissolved in liquid nugget and could not precipitate again because of rapid heat abstraction. Moreover, no transcrystallisation was found in both steels, which proves good mixing of the materials within the weld.
W artykule opisano wyniki badań metalograficznych zgrzein punktowych wykonanych ze stali o podwyższonej wytrzymałości HSLA340 i dwufazowej stali DP600. Badania wykazały, ze jądro zgrzeiny dla stali HSLA ma mikrostrukture martenzytu niskowęglowego, a dla stali DP600 martenzytu i bainitu. Dla obu gatunków stali w zgrzeinie nie obserwowano węglików mikrododatków stopowych, gdyż w czasie tworzenia ciekłego jądra zostały one rozpuszczone, a w wyniku szybkiego odprowadzania ciepła do elektrod nie zdołały sie ponownie wydzielić. Ponadto dla obu gatunków stali zaobserwowano brak transkrystalizacji, co świadczy o dobrym wymieszaniu sie materiałów w obrebie zgrzeiny.

This paper presents an experimental study on resistance spot welding of SPA-H weathering steel sheets used in side wall and roof application of rail vehicle bodies. SPA-H steel sheets having 2.3 mm thicknesses were joined by using resistance spot welding as lap joint. A timer and current controlled resistance spot welding machine having 120 kVA capacity and a pneumatic application mechanism with a single lever was used to prepare the specimens. Welding periods were chosen as 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 periods (1 period =0.02 s) and also welding currents were increased from 6 kA up to 11 kA by rise of 0.5 kA. The electrode force was kept constant at 4 kN. The prepared welding specimens were exposed to tensile-peel test and the obtained results were supported by diagrams and, finally, appropriate welding current and time were advised to the users.

In the present research, a parametric study in Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) of thin AISI 1008 steel sheets is investigated via FEM. All the time steps through the RSW process, including squeeze time, welding time, holding time and cooling time are taken into account. First, the effects of various parameters such as electrical current, welding time and electrode tip diameter are investigated in the nugget geometry. Then, a time history stress diagram and residual stresses are obtained in RSW weldment. FEM results are validated very well by some experiments which were performed in two parts of nugget geometry and residual stresses.

In this paper, an analysis of electric resistance spot welding between micro-alloyed steel sheets having 1 mm thickness and TRIP 800 (transformation induced plasticity) steel sheets having 1.5 mm thickness was made. Couples of steel sheets are used in automobile industry. Steel pairs were joined by using resistance spot welding as overlap joint. A timer and current controlled resistance spot welding machine had pneumatic application mechanism and 120 kVA capacity. Preparation of specimens by spot welding was performed using different cycles ranging from 5 to 30 cycle and welding currents ranging from 8.5 to 16.5 kA by rise of 0.5 kA. The electrode force was kept constant at 6 kN. The prepared welding specimens were exposed to tensile-peel tests and the obtained results were supported by diagrams. Finally, appropriate welding parameters were advised to the users.

Mating electrodes made of copper alloys are commonly used for welding galvanized steel sheets used in the production of car bodies. These alloys are characterized by high mechanical properties, a high level of electrical and thermal conductivity as well as the stability of these properties under changing conditions of current, thermal and mechanical load. Much careful attention was paid to the essence of the ongoing structural changes as well as to the mechanical properties in the welding process (RSW - Resistant Spot Welding) of steel sheets, including high-strength ones. There is a lack of research on structural changes and the related mechanical properties occurring in welding electrodes made of copper alloys caused by the welding process. This study is devoted to these issues and contains a critical review of the research results enabling a better understanding of the relationships between the structure and properties of welding electrodes caused by the cyclic welding process. In order to illustrate the phenomena occurring during the welding process, both in the material to be welded and in the tip electrodes, hardness and structural tests were carried out on electrode samples before and after their exploitation. The data collected in the article supplements a certain lack of information in the literature regarding the microstructural aspects of the welding process of galvanized steel sheets for the production of car bodies. The conducted research may be the starting point for the search for more effective materials for the tip electrodes.

As one of the most promising 3rd generation advanced high strength steels (AHSS), medium Mn steels attract much attention because of their exceptional mechanical property and reasonable cost. However, their application in the modern automotive industry is limited by poor weldability. In this study, 7Mn steel was welded by resistance spot welding (RSW), which was followed by high-temperature annealing to increase the cross-tension property. With this effort, enhanced cross-tension strength (CTS) with a partial interfacial fracture (PIF) mode was realized. During the annealing after RSW that produced martensite, austenitization was realized and then evolved into martensite by the following air cooling. This process produced structure homogeneity across the joint. With respect to the RSW joint, martensite remained the dominant structure after annealing while the diffusion of C and Mn solutes was triggered. With the increase of annealing temperature, the diffusion was enhanced, and the grain boundary embrittlement was reduced, leading to higher CTS.

The resistance spot welding (RSW) method was used to join aluminum alloy AA 1050 and copper alloy UNS C50100 sheets. Mechanical properties of the joints were examined. The influence of welding process parameters on tensile shear force of the joints was discussed. The design of experiments (DOE) method was used to analyze the influence of welding parameters on the mechanical properties of the joints. Three RSW parameters were used: welding current, squeeze time, and welding time. The results showed that the joint shear stress increased with increasing the welding current until a value of 12000 Amp. Then the shear stress decreased. The tensile shear stress increased with increasing the welding and squeeze time. As a consequence, it can be possible to weld copper with aluminum by RSW.

Opis:
The use of innovative resistance welding methods with bonding for joining construction materials opens new possibilities in expanding ranges of combined materials in various industrial sectors. The article presents the results of experiments of resistance spot welding-adhesive bonding, using the weld-through technique. The influence of welding conditions (technological parameters of welding) and adhesive bonding conditions (method of surface preparation, size and thickness of the overlap during bonding) on the process of creating hybrid connections is presented. The tests combined DC01 steel sheets without protective coverings and DP 600 with Z140 zinc protective coating and designed for applications in the automotive industry one-component epoxy adhesive was used.
Stosowanie innowacyjnych metod zgrzewania rezystancyjnego z klejeniem do łączenia materiałów konstrukcyjnych otwiera nowe możliwości w rozszerzaniu zakresów łączonych materiałów w różnych branżach przemysłowych. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki eksperymentów łączenia hybrydowego: zgrzewanie rezystancyjne punktowe-klejenie z użyciem techniki weld-through. Przedstawiono wpływ parametrów technologicznych zgrzewania oraz warunków klejenia (sposób przygotowania powierzchni, wymiary zakładki oraz grubość warstwy kleju) na proces tworzenia złączy hybrydowych zgrzewanie rezystancyjne-klejenie blach stalowych. W badaniach łączono blachy stalowe DC01 bez pokryć ochronnych i DP 600 z pokryciem ochronnym cynkowym Z140 z zastosowaniem kleju epoksydowego jednoskładnikowego przeznaczonego do zastosowań w przemyśle samochodowym.

Few aspects of shunting effect have been studied so far. Shunting effect in resistance spot welding (RSW) occurs when the electrical current passes through the previous spot welds. Value of this current depends mostly on distance, number, and size of previous spot welds. This will cause some dimensional and metallurgical changes in welding nugget as well as heat affected zone (HAZ). In this study, shunting effect of RSW is considered by finite element method (FEM) and the results are compared to experiments performed on aluminum alloy 2219. Weld spacing together with welding current and time are considered to discover the effect of shunting current in the final quality of nugget. A three factor experiment design has been performed to find the significance of factors and interactive effects, as well as finite element model verification. Electrothermal and mechanical interactions are considered in the FEM. Experimental and numerical solutions have yielded similar results in terms of welding nugget properties. Asymmetry in electrical potential, temperature, stress distribution and geometry of shunted nugget is predicted and verified directly or indirectly. Intense effect of shunting current on nugget height, asymmetric growth of heat affected zone (HAZ) toward previous welding nugget, as well as concentration of alloying elements along grain boundaries are also discovered.

Opis:
Failure mode of resistance spot welds (interfacial vs. pullout) is a qualitative measure of resistance spot weld performance. Considering adverse effect of interfacial failure mode on the vehicle crashworthiness, process parameters should be adjusted so that the pullout failure mode is guaranteed ensuring reliability of spot welds during vehicle lifetime. In this paper, metallurgical and mechanical properties of HSLA 420 resistance spot welds are studied with particular attention to the failure mode. Results showed that the conventional weld size recommendation of 4t0:5 (t is sheet thickness) is not sufficient to guarantee pullout failure mode for HSLA steel spot welds during the tensile-shear test. Considering the failure mechanism of spot welds during the tensileshear test, minimum required fusion zone size to ensure the pullout failure mode was estimated using an analytical model. Fusion zone size proved to be the most important controlling factor for peak load and energy absorption of HSLA 420 resistance spot weld.
Tryb uszkodzenia zgrzein (pękanie na granicy faz a wyrywanie) jest jakościowa miara zachowania zgrzein. Biorąc pod uwagę niekorzystny wpływ uszkodzenia na granicy faz na odporność pojazdu na uderzenia, parametry zgrzewania powinny być ustawione tak, ze trybem uszkodzenia jest wyrywanie co gwarantuje niezawodność zgrzein w czasie eksploatacji pojazdu. W pracy, badane sa metalurgiczne i mechaniczne właściwości zgrzein stali HSLA 420 ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem trybu uszkodzenia. Wyniki próby rozciągania i ścinania wykazały, ze konwencjonalne zalecenie rozmiaru spoiny 4t0:5 (t - grubość) nie jest wystarczające, aby zapewnić ze trybem uszkodzenia jest wyrywanie. Biorąc pod uwagę mechanizm uszkodzenia zgrzein w czasie próby rozciągania i ścinania, minimalna wielkość strefy stopionej wymagana do zapewnienia, ze trybem uszkodzenia jest najbardziej istotnym czynnikiem decydującym o maksymalnym obciążeniu i pochłanianiu energii przez zgrzewana stal HSLA 420.

Nowadays, there are several important reasons for using high-strength sheets in the manufacturing of car bodies. Car manufacturers choose the steel with good formability, fatigue resistance and ability to absorb impact energy. Microalloyed steels and dual-phase steels are the materials which fulfil the above-mentioned criteria. The application of high-strength sheets has led to the development of new materials joining techniques. Mechanical joining, such as clinching, is the innovative technique to join these progressive materials. Materials of different thicknesses can be joined by clinching. The paper focuses on the comparison of the properties of the joints made by clinching and resistance spot welding. The application of resistance spot welding is still the most used joining method in car body production. These properties were investigated by tensile test and metallographic observation. The HCT600X+ZF, HCT600X+Z and HX420LAD+Z steel sheets were used for the experiments. The results of tensile test show that the values of load-bearing capacity of clinched joints reached from 3900 N to 5900 N and the resistance spot welded joints reached the values of load-bearing capacity from 12000 N to 19500 N. In comparison to the resistance spot welded joints, the clinched joints reached from 32 to 48% of load-bearing capacity.

Due to the increasing demand for connecting cells in packets to power electric tools, bicycles and electric cars, the issue of the quality of battery cells with busbars joints with the use of external heat electrodes is particularly important. The paper presents the conditions of the joining process and modelling results using the DC source. Modelling was performed using commercially available Sorpas 3D software. It included checking the influence of the busbar shape, clamping force, electrode material, the shape of electrode face, the length of the tungsten inserts in the welding electrodes on the amount of heat and the diameter of the connections. Modelling results revealed in particular increased heat generation and connection diameters for electrodes with a smaller work surface, however, industrial practice shows that the electrode face diameter durability is limited and that the electrodes flatten - the electrode face diameter increases.
Z uwagi na wzrastające zapotrzebowanie na łączenie ogniw w pakiety do zasilania elektronarzędzi, rowerów i samochodów elektrycznych, kwestia jakości połączeń baterii z łącznikami z użyciem elektrod doprowadzających ciepło z zewnątrz jest szczególnie istotna. W opracowaniu przedstawiono warunki procesu łączenia oraz wyniki modelowania z użyciem źródła prądu stałego DC. Modelowanie przeprowadzono z użyciem komercyjnie dostępnego oprogramowania Sorpas 3D. Obejmowało ono sprawdzenie wpływu kształtu łącznika, siły docisku, materiału elektrod, kształtu części roboczej elektrod, długości wkładek wolframowych w elektrodach zgrzewających na ilość ciepła i średnicę połączeń (zgrzein). Wyniki modelowania ujawniły w szczególności zwiększoną generację ciepła i średnice połączeń dla elektrod o mniejszej powierzchni roboczej, jednak z praktyki przemysłowej wynika, iż trwałość zakończenia jest ograniczona i następuje spłaszczanie elektrod - powiększenie średnicy roboczej.
