Opis:
Attention to metaphor as a tool for cognition and action has already been called by the classic work by Georg Lakoff and Mark Johnson—Metaphors We Live By (1980). However, some four decades after this publication’s first edition, the role of metaphor as a useful instrument in empirical research seems to have been forgotten. Therefore, the first step taken in the text at hand is to highlight that codes of ethics neither resolve nor befit the dynamically shifting circumstances of research conducted in the field. Ethical codes are often insufficient. Hence, an objective here will be to critically assess the broad application of such codes in general. The second step will be to turn to metaphor as a tool in developing the sociological imagination as understood by C. Wright Mills. The metaphor can also assist in finding oneself when confronted with difficult, ambiguous circumstances that may arise during fieldwork. Metaphor as a tool, as an ethical kaleidoscope coherently links the field research experience precisely with the sociological imagination.

According to authors opinion irony is one of fundamental ideas giving us one of the ways of thinking of world around us - anthropological thought consideration. Realizing the multiplicity of meanings, polymorphism and inhomogeneous modus operandi by using it notices analogy with every aspect of anthropological recognition - from literal one to methodology and research attitude. Polymorphism of irony is ideal but very hard to use tool, moreover the one which have many ways to operate it. It wouldn´t be misuse if author aligned it with deconstruction, because the similarity is unquestioned though not directly shown in text itself. Such juxtaposition is even more justified if considered with strong philosophic perspective of R. Rorty who had written it in “Final Vocabulary” of postmodernists. The irony can´t be completely defined- being described from centuries it acumulates meanings and attempt of its exact description is pointless - it tends to be equally on same level as deconstruction as well as one above it which may be one of ways to read or construct it.

In the further part, this is juxtaposed with the studies based on direct and indirect data collection. The essence of the text is an analysis of trendy and infrequent types of studies in the indicated field. This analysis incidentally refers to the correctness of the conducted explorations. The study is completed with final conclusions, which comprise a short list of the neglected issues in the field of special education.

As a result of our ageing society, finding the right workforce and keeping it motivated successfully in the long term is becoming increasingly challenging and it is not any different in the field of agricultural research. The authors have carried out exploratory research in the subject of motivation at the workplace amongst the young researchers participating in the Researchers Recruitment Programme of the National Agricultural Research and Innovation Center. Our questions are: What social background do those who choose this scientific career path have? Which factors motivate young researchers to choose this profession and which factors discourage them? In this article, the authors seek to find the answers to these questions and reinterpret Herzberg’s theory by addressing the Y-generation agricultural researchers.

The main goal of this article is to demonstrate the significant value of using narrative interviews in research on the education of talented learners. The authors decided to highlight the value of such research in the case of a specific group of learners. However, it might prove valuable to mention the special features of that method and some challenges that can appear in such research. The authors investigate the importance of applying narrative inquiry, especially narrative interviewing, in research on talented individuals. As for the research approach, it is embedded in qualitative methods. The authors present a retrospective secondary analysis based on their previous research into talented people’s experience of education, from an approach of both writer and reviewer. The introduction contains an outline of the subject of the text. Then, a description of narrative interviews and of talented learners is presented. The research method is also characterized. The previous results regarding talented learners’ experience of education are presented. Finally, the research results and recommendations for research practice are provided. The narrative interview technique proved to be a suitable method for the social sciences. It is appropriate for research on talented learners and their experiences within the educational process. Thanks to narrative interviews, researchers can reveal many important matters, such as learners’ intellectual talents and accomplishments, their relationships with themselves and other people, and some important common patterns of their functioning, such as perfectionism or non-conformism. Moreover, the research material can very rich and researchers can interpret it in very interesting ways so that the readers (educators and parents) can understand this particular group of learners and provide them with a convenient, conducive educational environment. The final section consists of some possibilities for researchers who want to use narrative interviewing as a method of research. The authors suggest obtaining some psychological and interpretative skills and building good relationships with the narrators.

Opis:
It is believed that human capital mobility is essential for both intranational as well as international knowledge diffusion and consequently for the improvement of innovativeness and competitiveness of enterprises and national economies. The common opinion, however, is that it is only the receiving party who benefits in the form of spillover effects while the source company or country of the worker lose (or do not gain) as a result of his departure or emigration. Because of this, policy makers in many countries, and not only those with developing or emerging economies, fear that activities of mobile academic researchers or skilled industry staff will positively affect only the host country despite the fact that the worker have been largely financed by the source country. In the light of ongoing discussion concerning potentially negative consequences of human capital mobility for the parent party, the aim of this article is to show, on the example of selected national economies, the relationship between human capital mobility and knowledge diffusion as well as identify the factors that stimulate and inhibit knowledge diffusion through labour mobility. On the basis of empirical research findings it may be stated that there is no support for the widespread concern that only the party which receives human capital gains its precious know-how. Namely, regardless of the knowledge diffusion measurement method used (method in which the measure is certain economic indicator; citation method, survey study method), evidence can be found that both mobile academic researchers as well as skilled industry workers transfer knowledge also to the source company and country. Moreover, these effects are noticeable in both developed as well as emerging and developing economies. The diffusion of knowledge, however, does not always occur or the strength of the diffusion may vary, in both the parent party as well as the party hiring the worker. The role of human capital mobility in transfer of knowledge depends on a number of factors. Diffusion of knowledge is fostered by (1) existence of a technological gap between the source party and the party which hires the worker, yet this gap cannot be too large; (2) high ability of the hiring party to absorb foreign know-how; (3) patent system with poor protection of intellectual property rights; (4) the mobile worker having knowledge ”distant” from the one possessed by the hiring party and (5) employment of the mobile worker in non-core technological areas of her or his new employer. The barriers to diffusion of knowledge are (1) high propensity to patent innovation at the company from which the worker departs; (2) using of hard intellectual property rights protection strategy by the company from which the worker departs; (3) using of high wage strategy by the company and (4) the company using a strategy consisting in relaying knowledge to employees only by their supervisors and not through technical instructions, service manual

Negotiating politically sensitive research environments requires both a careful consideration of the methods involved and a great deal of personal resolve. In drawing upon two distinct yet comparable fieldwork experiences, this paper champions the benefits of ethnographic methods in seeking to gain positionality and research legitimacy among those identified as future research participants. The authors explore and discuss their use of the ethnographic concept of “hanging out” in politically sensitive environments when seeking to negotiate access to potentially hard to reach participants living in challenging research environments. Through an illustrative examination of their experiences in researching commemorative rituals in Palestine and mental health in a Northern Irish prison, both authors reflect upon their use of “hanging out” when seeking to break down barriers and gain acceptance among their target research participants. Their involvement in a range of activities, not directly related to the overall aims of the research project, highlights a need for qualitative researchers to adopt a flexible research design, one that embraces serendipitous or chance encounters, when seeking to gain access to hard to reach research participants or when issues of researcher legitimacy are particularly pronounced, such as is the case in politically sensitive research environments.

Scholarly publication is a leading requirement for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program. Publishing articles, therefore, has become an appealing expectation for early-stage doctoral researchers (ESDRs). However, little has been done to address the dynamic relationship between the PhD and the academic publication system. The purpose of this study is to understand the intricately intertwined structures of PhD study and to explore the challenges related to scholarly publication. A group discussion method was deployed for data collection by recruiting international ESDRs (n=15) from three different countries. Primary results indicate that common anxiety is associated with the requirement to publish in high impact factor journals as well as the publication process. Quality supervision is recognized as inevitable to improve a mentor-mentee relationship and was found helpful in reducing the barriers to scientific publication. Moreover, the dominant structural factors of PhD study determine the ESDRs’ decision-making. The study suggests that the PhD study should remain research-intensive rather than simply for the sake of obtaining a higher qualification.

The concept of feminatives as a proposition of gender equalization is reflected and presented from the perspective of their drawbacks in the field of social functioning. The gender stereotypes’ influence on research participants is treated as a special aspect of the problem, peculiarly in the area of human sexuality research due to specific feedback and results’ bias. The problem is analysed then both from the systemic (contextual) perspective of academia and the particular situation of research, showing that gender may but does not have to influence scientific work.

In this text, the author reflects upon the situation of a young researcher in the field of education. The basis of the narration is a diagnostic survey conducted among young researchers. The survey includes such issues as: the experience of young educators in their academic work; the assessment of the work organization system at the universities; the proposals for changes that would enrich academic culture of work among young scientists. The thesis organizing the text concerns irritation that young scientists feel every day, which results from ambivalent experience connected with the culture of scientific work. The author wonders whether the annoyance may be a wise, constructive and emancipatory experience.

The article considers the problem of researcher’s embodiment in the process of data gathering and analysis in an ethnographic study on social world of climbing. In author’s opinion, presented reflections go beyond described case and remain applicable to every ethnographic research interested in embodied experiences of human beings, especially these in which the main research topic is physical, e.g., sport activity, bodywork, and work with the body. The author analyses relations between embodiment of particular actions taken by the researched subjects and embodiment of the research process. She raises the problem of transition between the researcher’s identity and the social world participant’s identity – searching for the possibility of using autoethnography in the process of data gathering and analyzing. Finally, she presents three aspects of the body/embodiment in the ethnographic research, referring them to the studied subjects (climbers) and to the researcher: (a) the body as an agent, (b) the embodied experience, (c) the body as a subject of theorizing and reflections. The author emphasizes the embodied nature of research process – especially in the ethnographic studies – and suggests taking into consideration the embodiment of the researcher and the role of the body in the process of knowledge production.

Opis:
W opracowaniu przedstawiono próbę operacjonalizacji określeń: sukces badacza i kompetencje badacza w odniesieniu do specyfiki Nauk o Zarządzaniu (NoZ). Konieczność doprecyzowania tych kategorii wynika ze zidentyfikowanej na drodze studiów literaturowych luki. Studia literaturowe objęły analizę anglojęzycznych opracowań pozyskanych z baz Scopus oraz Web of Science. Kluczowe ustalenia w zakresie kategorii sukcesu badacza NoZ uwidoczniły się w wyodrębnieniu 5 obszarów umiejscawianych po stronie: (1) charakteru dyscypliny naukowej; (2) badacza; (3) uczelni/instytutów badawczych; (4) rozwiązań systemowych; (5) otoczenia gospodarczego, społecznego i kulturowego. Do kategorii kompetencji badacza odnoszono się głównie w ramach dwóch obszarów: (1) podejść badawczych (dedukcja vs indukcja, podejście nomotetyczne vs idiograficzne); (2) współpracy z określonymi podmiotami (perspektywa dwustronna: badacz–organizacja; perspektywa trójstronna: badacz– pośrednik (konsulting)–organizacja).
In this paper has been done the operationalization of such categories like the success of researcher and skills of researcher in the field of Sciences of Management (SoM). The necessity of specifying these categories is the result of recognized research gap. Literature studies included the analysis of English-language studies obtained from the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Key conclusions in area of the researcher success in SoM have been shown in five fields: (1) the character of scientific discipline, (2) the researcher, (3) universities/research institutes, (4) systemic solutions, (5) economic, social and cultural environment. The category of researcher’s competencies has been referred to two areas: (1) research approaches (deduction vs. induction, nomothetic vs. idiographic); (2) cooperation with specific entities (two-way perspective: researcher-organization; tripartite perspective: researchertertius (consulting)-organization).

Maria Skłodowska was born on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw (Poland). Her parents were teachers. Maria’s mother has died in 1878 of tuberculosis. In 1893 and 1894, respectively, Maria was awarded master’s degrees in physics and in mathematics from the Sorbonne University. In 1895 Maria married Pierre Curie. In 1897 their daughter Irene was born. Maria investigated rays emitted by uranium salts. She hypothesized that the radiation come from atom and called this phenomenon “radioactivity”. In 1898, Maria and Pierre discovered new radioactive elements polonium and radium. In 1902 she isolated pure radium chloride and defined radium atomic mass. In June 1903, Maria supervised by Professor Lippmann was awarded her doctorate in physics from the Sorbonne University of Paris after presentation of the thesis “Investigation of radioactive bodies”. In December 1903, Maria was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, along with her husband Pierre and Henri Becquerel, for their work on radioactivity. In 1904, the daughter Eve was born. On 19 April 1906, Pierre was killed in a road accident in Paris. In 1910 Maria isolated radium as a pure metal. She also defined an international standard for radioactive emissions (curie), published her fundamental results on radioactivity and textbook of radiology. She also defined the international pattern of radium. In 1911, she won her second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, for her discovery of radium and polonium. In 1914 she was appointed director in the Radium Institute in Paris. During World War I, Maria became the director of the Red Cross Radiology Service and set up France’s first military radiology centre. In May 1932 she has attended the official opening ceremony of the Radium Institute in Warsaw. On 4 July 1934, Maria Skłodowska-Curie has died aged 66 years in Sancellemoz sanatorium (France) of aplastic anemia.
Maria Skłodowska urodziła się 7 listopada 1867 r. w Warszawie (Polska). Jej rodzice byli nauczycielami. W 1898 r., Maria i Piotr odkryli nowe pierwiastki promieniotwórcze polon i rad. W 1902 r. Maria wyizolowała czysty chlorek radu i określiła masę atomową radu. W czerwcu 1903 r. Maria obroniła na Uniwersytecie Sorbona pracę doktorską w dziedzinie fizyki pt. “Badania ciał radioaktywnych”, której promotorem był Profesor Lippmann. W grudniu 1903 r. wraz z mężem Piotrem Curie i Henri Becquerelem uzyskała Nagrodę Nobla w dziedzinie fizyki za prace nad radioaktywnością. W 1904 r. urodziła córkę Ewę. W kwietniu 1906r., Piotr Curie zginął tragicznie w wypadku drogowym w Paryżu. W 1910 r. Maria Skłodowska-Curie zmarła w wieku 66 lat 4 lipca 1934r. w sanatorium Sancellemoz (Francja) z powodu anemii aplastycznej.

Opis:
In recent years, there has been growing pressure on both universities and enterprises to intensify cooperation. The subject of this article here is academic entrepreneurship at the researcher level. The aim is to identify attitudes towards such entrepreneurship and define the diversity of attitudes. Moreover, it has been established how such attitudes towards entrepreneurship differentiate the intention and commitment to start cooperation with industry in reality. Achieving this aim required an empirical study involving primary sources. The study subjects were university researchers working on tourism issues, and a total of 73 participated. Methods from descriptive statistics and the chi-square test of independence were used to analyse the results. According to the study, researchers are much more likely to perceive the benefits than the disadvantages of cooperation, and the benefits perceived most are chances to obtain information and the inspiration to conduct academic and didactic work. The work also found that researchers who see academic entrepreneurship as an opportunity for financial benefit and see cooperation as an opportunity to increase enterprises’ competitive advantage significantly more often declare their intention to engage in it.

Opis:
Identity politics have been of considerable interest to the qualitative research tradition as researchers have speculated on the extent to which identity and positionality matter in the field. In this autoethnography, I analyze private writings I composed while studying musicians’ life course trajectories in musical careers, paying particular attention to the methodological implications of my fieldwork decisions. I concentrate on: 1) issues of access, 2) identity politics, and 3) the ethics of relationships in the field. I analyze the extent to which I negotiated several (sometimes conflicting) ways I presented my identity in different settings and among different populations. My presentation of self-strategies – sometimes intentional, other times haphazard – allowed me successful entrée to the music world, though I remained an outsider within. I conclude with methodological implications highlighting the ways researchers’ identities may influence the research process and suggestions for qualitative researchers to consider in future studies.

Opis:
The paper is an in-depth analysis of the constraints and challenges that the researcher of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) faces in practices connected to the research processes. To fully understand where that trouble derives from, we need to examine the notion of discourse and the process of CDA itself. Then the major issues will be exemplified by particular experiences gained in the process of conducting the research project “Women in Intimate Relationships: The Empirical and Critical Study” financed by the Polish National Science Centre (NCN no 2011/01/D/HS6/02470). On one side, the text is an attempt to structure and systematize the knowledge about difficulties caused by the CDA processes, but on the other, it can be read as a kind of “warning notice” that can save very young researchers from making significant mistakes before they start their CDA investigations.

Opis:
Research ethics address concerns related to power imbalances. These dynamics are particularly prominent in refugee camps, where the contemporary ‘protracted’ state (UNHCR, 2004) turns them into quasi-laboratories, where refugees are subjected to scrutiny, measurement, observation, and analysis by researchers, NGOs, and governmental organizations. Researchers typically conduct brief field trips to perform predetermined scientific activities, limiting their comprehensive understanding of the subject under study. Fieldwork conducted in Nakivale Refugee Settlement (Uganda) since 2019 has highlighted an often-one-way communication dynamic between researchers and refugees, where refugees rarely receive feedback on the information they provide. Consequently, refugees develop a lack of trust towards researchers, impacting their subjectivity and self-esteem. They perceive themselves as information providers rather than owners, lacking simultaneous access to that information. The concept of power-knowledge (Foucault 1980) is instrumental in understanding this issue and reflecting on researchers’ responsibilities in studying vulnerable populations.
