The paper is an in-depth analysis of the constraints and challenges that the researcher of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) faces in practices connected to the research processes. To fully understand where that trouble derives from, we need to examine the notion of discourse and the process of CDA itself. Then the major issues will be exemplified by particular experiences gained in the process of conducting the research project “Women in Intimate Relationships: The Empirical and Critical Study” financed by the Polish National Science Centre (NCN no 2011/01/D/HS6/02470). On one side, the text is an attempt to structure and systematize the knowledge about difficulties caused by the CDA processes, but on the other, it can be read as a kind of “warning notice” that can save very young researchers from making significant mistakes before they start their CDA investigations.

Celem tego artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na dylematy związane z rolą obserwacji uczestniczącej w antropologicznych praktykach badawczych. Autor nawiązuje do dyskusji o przydatności tej metody i polemizuje z nurtami, które ją kwestionują. Zauważa zjawisko redefiniowania metodologicznych dyrektyw obserwacji w celu przystosowania jej do nowych warunków prowadzenia badań. W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe założenia tej metody, a następnie wskazano obszary i mechanizmy jej przekształcania. Tekst zawiera odwołania do debaty teoretycznej na temat tożsamości antropologii społecznej. Nawiązując do własnych doświadczeń badawczych autor porusza kwestię przydatności tej metody w poznaniu antropologicznym. Szczególną uwagę zwraca na relacje badacza i informatora.
The purpose of this article is to point out the various dilemmas related to the role played by participant observation in anthropological research practices. The author makes reference to the wide-ranging discussion on the usefulness of this method, disagreeing with the trends that question it. He observes the phenomenon of redefi ning methodological directives regarding participant observation in order to adjust the latter to the new conditions of conducting research. The text, which repeatedly alludes to the theoretical debate on the identity of social anthropology, includes a brief description of the methods of participant observation as well as of possible areas and mechanisms of changing it. The author, referring to his own research fi ndings, considers the method’s usefulness in terms of anthropological cognition, with special emphasis on the researcher-informant relationship.

Opis:
Purpose: The article is a theoretical one and aims to presents potential threats for academics and science development in the context of corporate university model which is functioning in other countries. Design/methodology/approach: Critical literature review, especially concentrating on studies which results refer to the experiences of academics from countries where corporate university model has been implemented. Findings: Dominating organizational culture of competition and continuous audits based on citations (IF) evidently contribute to the number of publications and their citations. Unfortunately, at the same time there is also a growing amount of publications, including JCR journals, which do not add any value the science. “Scientists” who “produce” these papers are entrepreneurs able to use the Questionable Research Practices. Research limitations/implications: There is a need to develop and publicize this problem because it is a real threat to science. It is necessary to pay greater attention to ethics in the scientist's conduct and to introduce mechanisms to discourage potential "entrepreneurs". Originality/value: The article highlights a new research and social problem, which is a fraud in science.

This essay-like text discusses 10 pitfalls in the analysis of data in management science: (1) Too small a number of experimental studies; (2) Ignoring the specifics of the research object; (3) Lack of standard operationalizations; (4) Weakness of measurement ; (5) Weakness of data analyses; (6) Too high a level of generality of theory and too few replications; (7) Misinterpretation of the outcomes of statistical analyses; (8) Reviewers’ expectation regarding the samples and hypotheses testing; (9) Missing “time” in the list of predictors; (10) Wrong standards of publication. Most of these risks apply also to psychological and sociological research.
W niniejszym tekście omawiamy 10 pułapek analiz danych w naukach o zarządzaniu: (1) zbyt mała liczba badań doświadczalnych; (2) ignorowanie specyfiki przedmiotu badań; (3) brak standardowych operacjonalizacji; (4) słabość pomiaru; (5) słabość analiz danych; (6) zbyt wysoki poziom ogólności teorii i zbyt mała liczba replikacji; (7) błędna interpretacja wyników analiz statystycznych; (8) oczekiwania recenzentów dotyczące doboru próby i testowania hipotez; (9) brak „czasu” na liście predyktorów; (10) niewłaściwe standardy publikacji. Większość z tych zjawisk odnosi się również do badań psychologicznych i socjologicznych.

Artykuł ma cel eksploracyjny. Podjęto w nim próbę zrekonstruowania praktyk analizy dyskursu na podstawie badania zawartości abstraktów czasopism anglojęzycznych z zakresu analizy dyskursu („Language in Society”, „Discourse Studies”, „Discourse and Society”, „Language and Communication”, „Text and Talk”). Analizie poddano czasopisma mające wysoki współczynnik cytowalności i w związku z tym duży wpływ na wyznaczanie głównych trendów metodologicznych w analizie dyskursu. Obliczono częstotliwość występowania typów materiału badawczego (np. dyskurs ustny i mówiony) i przedmiotu analizy (interakcja instytucjonalna, codzienna, medialna i internetowa) oraz podejść teoretycznych i kategorii badawczych. Na podstawie szczegółowej analizy zróżnicowania pomiędzy czasopismami i tendencji wspólnych dla nich wszystkich dokonano wstępnych uogólnień na temat praktyk analizy dyskursu w krajach anglosaskich. Cechy wyróżniające te praktyki to między innymi skupienie się na interakcji, zainteresowanie kontekstami instytucjonalnymi i komunikacją mówioną oraz uprawianie badań stosowanych.
The article pursues an exploratory goal of reconstructing discourse analytical practices through the research on the content of abstracts that appeared in discourse analysis-centred journals (“Language in Society,” “Discourse Studies,” “Discourse and Society,” “Language and Communication,” “Text and Talk”) published in English. The selected journals have a high Impact Factor and thus, significantly influence the major methodological trends within discourse analysis. The frequency with which the various types of content, i.e., types of empirical material (e.g., spoken and written discourse) and subject matter (institutional, everyday, media or internet interactions), as well as theoretical approaches and analytical categories, appear has been measured. Detailed analysis of both the journals’ diversification and trends common to all journals has allowed to draw tentative generalizations concerning the practices of discourse analysis in the English speaking world. The distinguishing features of these practices are: concentration on interaction, interest in institutional contexts and spoken communication, as well as applied research, to name a few.

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie modelu badań posługujących się sztuką w autorskim projekcie pt. Matki wykluczone społecznie. Cele badań zorientowane są m.in. na: poznanie doświadczeń matek wykluczonych społecznie; pobudzenie autorefleksji badanych kobiet nad ich doświadczeniami macierzyństwa; uwrażliwienie i budowanie krytycznej refleksji uczestników i odbiorców badań związanej z doświadczeniami badanych kobiet. Proponowany model badań przez sztukę przyjmuje formę uczestniczącej, krytycznej i zaangażowanej społecznie praktyki badawczej. W niniejszym tekście omówione zostały kolejne etapy zastosowanego modelu. Specyficzne jest tu włączenie elementów sztuki do procesu badawczego. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań zostaną przygotowane scenariusze dla zaproszonych do projektu aktorek, których zadaniem będzie odegranie kobiet badanych. Sceny te będą sfilmowane, a następnie upublicznione podczas performansu.
The aim of the article is to present the model of research that uses art in the original project of “Socially excluded mothers”. The goals of the research are oriented, amongst others, for learning about the experiences of socially excluded mothers; prompting self-reflection of the researched women on their maternity experiences and making the research participants and recipients sensitive and building their critical reflection connected with the experiences of the researched women. The suggested model of research through art takes on a form of a participatory, critical and socially engaged research practice. In this text there have been discussed subsequent stages of the applied model. What is specific here is the involvement of art elements in the investigation proccess. On the basis of the conducted research there will be prepared scenarios for the actresses invited to the project, whose task will be to enact the researched women. These scenes will be filmed and then made public during the performance.

Artykuł jest głosem w dyskusji na temat wspólnej przestrzeni paradygmatycznej geografii społecznej oraz socjologii miasta w odwołaniu do „miejsca”. Tezy opracowania przeciwstawiają sobie dwa sposoby rozumienia relacji pomiędzy dyscyplinami: „uwspólniania” oraz „podzielania”, wskazując na znaczenie tego pierwszego w nawiązaniu do tradycji badawczej socjologicznej Szkoły Chicagowskiej z lat 20. i 30. XX w. Stanowiska i praktyki empiryczne, które wówczas wytworzono doskonale wpisują się w dyskusję, która towarzyszyła usamodzielnianiu się geografii społecznej, będąc jednocześnie jednym z niezwykle wpływowych nurtów socjologii miasta. Tekst eksploatuje analitycznie trzy opracowania poświęcone Szkole Chicagowskiej, które ukazywały się od drugiej połowy lat 90. XX w. Osobnym wątkiem jest pojmowanie paradygmatu empirycznego, a w jego ramach rozumienie mix methods, jako przykład „uwspólniania” praktyk badawczych na gruncie koncepcji paradygmatu empirycznego. Wnioski z opracowania zmierzają do zaproponowania konwencji mix methods dla studiów interdyscyplinarnych socjologii miasta i geografii społecznej.
The text provides a voice in discussing the shared paradigmatic space of social geography and urban sociology about ‘place’. The study’s theses contrast two ways of understanding the relationship between disciplines: “making common” and “sharing”, pointing to the former’s importance concerning the sociological research tradition of the Chicago School of the 1920s and 1930s. The positions and empirical practices produced at that time were perfectly in line with the discussion that accompanied the independence of social geography, which was also one of the highly influential urban sociology trends. The text analytically explores three studies on the Chicago School that have appeared since the second half of the 1990s. A separate theme is understanding the empirical paradigm and the understanding of mixed methods as an example of “making common” research practices based on the concept of the empirical paradigm. The study’s conclusions aim to propose a mixed method convention for interdisciplinary studies of urban sociology and social geography, whose inspiration lies in the American tradition of Urban sociology.

Artykuł podejmuje refleksję na temat wartości poznawczej i metodologicznej praktyk auto/biograficznych, skoncentrowanych na poszukiwaniu związków biografii naukowej i zawodowej. Istotą tych podejść jest włączenie osobistych doświadczeń badacza w tok procesu badawczego. Tym samym perspektywa ta staje się, obok biografii badanych, ważnym źródłem (roz)poznawania światów społecznych. Naturalny kontekst prowadzonych badań sprawia, iż auto/biografia splata się z autoetnografią, ponieważ każde badanie zawsze ma jakiś teren eksplorowany i doświadczany przez badacza. Z drugiej strony, każda „opowieść” ze sfery badawczej, nosiła będzie subiektywne znamiona obecnego w niej badacza. Zatem każde badanie posiada swoją trajektorię, w którą wpisane jest „ja badacza”. Obecność refleksji nad własnym „ja” daje badaczowi nie tylko możliwość ukazania swoich osobistych doświadczeń, ale także podjęcie krytycznej refleksji nad rolą, jaką odgrywają one w realizowanych badaniach. Chodzi o poszukiwanie relacji pomiędzy perspektywą interpretacyjną a autobiografią podmiotu poznającego.
The writer draws a reflection about the cognitive and methodological value of auto/biographical practices, focused on seeking the links between a scientific and professional biography. The essence of those approaches is the inclusion of researcher’s personal experiences in the course of the research process. Thereby, that perspective becomes an important source of (re)cognising social worlds. The natural context of the conducted research makes auto/biography entangled with auto-etnography, because each research always has a territory which is explored and experienced by the researcher. On the other hand, each „novel” that comes from the research sphere will have subjective marks of the researcher who is present there. Therefore, each research has its own trajectory, where the researcher’s “self” is inscribed. The presence of the reflection over their own “self” gives the researcher not only the possibility of showing their own personal experiences, but also taking on a critical reflection over a role which is played by them in the conducted research. The point is to seek relations between the interpretation perspective and the autobiography of the cognition subject.

This paper presents the risks of quantitative research pertaining to corporate finance and accounting. These is followed by a survey-like catalogue of good practices in modelling. All considerations are rooted in financial microeconometrics, the field for examining both practical and theoretical questions of applying econometric techniques in corporate finance and accounting research based on the use of microdata (Gruszczyński 2018a). Two major parts of the paper include: (1) discussion of the typical drawbacks in applying regression-type models, like causality vs. correlation, selection of explanatory variables and endogeneity, and (2) list of good practices in microeconometric applications to corporate finance and accounting research, based on Faff (2017), Kennedy (2002), Adams (2017), Hyndman (robjhyndman.com/) and author’s own experience. Catalogue of good practices in microeconometric applications to corporate finance and accounting may serve as the checklist for students and researchers.

This paper provides a conceptual theoretical review of participatory turn and gamification from a United Kingdom (UK) perspective. Democratic deficit is a perennial problem in urban-planning systems due to the number of causal factors. Participatory practices and gamification are two instruments that can be used to help alleviate low democratic responsiveness. The paper articulates how there are different ways of knowing and assessing community priorities and values – people need increased consciousness and self-confidence to participate. The UK case studies that are discussed have made a significant contribution by providing useful insights regarding the benefits and limitations of participatory practices and gamification. For example, ‘Participology’ and ‘Geogopoly’ have clear participatory gamification benefits even though they are unable to include decision-maker accountability or recreate real-life power relationships. This paper posits that the use of participatory practices and/or gamification as policy levers (specifically in UK urban-planning processes) will herald a shift in the balance of power.

This article explores the use of biographies in qualitative research about collective memory. It is argued that commemorative ceremonies, as well as changes appearing in macro-level structures within the time-span of individuals’ life histories need to be included when analyzing biographies in collective memory studies. The article suggests enhancement of the biographical case reconstruction method (Rosenthal 1993; 2004) with two additional stages: analysis of the experienced past with more emphasis on socio-historical transformations; and inclusion and analysis of the ethnographical data collected from collective mnemonic practices. By providing empirical data from the research conducted with political exiles in Germany, these analytical steps of the method of socio-historical analysis are demonstrated in detail.

This review is a short presentation and an analysis of the book България – страна на розите, published in 2018. The book consists of three parts – a phototypical copy of the first Polish edition of the collective book from 1938, a translation of this edition into Bulgarian language with biographies of the authors of the texts and several studies, dedicated to Metodi Konstantinov (the 1938’s edition editor), to Polish-Bulgarian political and cultural relations in the late 1930s and their local repercussions in Poznań and last but not least – to the language of the first edition and its translation and re-translation. The aim of the publication – to remind the first edition of the book, to make it accessible for Bulgarian readers and to restore the memory about its authors and editors – is thoroughly fulfilled. Moreover, an additional advantage of the book is that it makes its readers more aware of the difference in Bulgarians’ self-representational practices before and after the Second World War.

The insufficient R&D expenditure in Poland and the difficult conditions for the commercialisation of research results force public research organisations to search for effective marketing tactics that would support the transfer of innovations. Based on the methods of case study and the comparative analysis of several Polish public research organisations, the authors attempt to indicate good practices in this field.
Niewielkie nakłady na badania i rozwój w Polsce oraz trudne warunki komercjalizacji rezultatów prac badawczych powodują, że instytucje badawcze i naukowe są zmuszone poszukiwać skutecznych działań marketingowych. Specyfika ich działalności wymusza specjalne zdefiniowanie działalności marketingowej, skoncentrowanej głównie w sferze public relations (PR). W artykule, stosując metodę studium przypadku oraz analizę porównawczą dla wybranych instytucji badawczych, starano się zebrać dobre praktyki w tym zakresie.

In our globalised world there are more and more examples of multilingual and multicultural schools where a more complex social context is present than in a monocultural institution. Therefore, the collaboration of different partners is an organic part of education and plays an important role in these pedagogical settings. This paper gives an account of research into multilingualism and multiculturalism in a kindergarten attended by children from foreign families working at a local air base. The highly interdisciplinary research aims to explore the main question, i.e. how can kindergarten teachers, children, parents and educational specialists form the common linguistic, cultural and pedagogical basis in this very complex setting? The article outlines the background to the study and, with the help of the research methods applied, it focuses on the challenges of the situation and the cooperation of the actors. The findings shed light on linguistic-pedagogical questions, such as how languages relate to each other, how different cultural identities are manifested under institutional circumstances, what the actors’ attitude is to early childhood multilingual-multicultural education, and how a dialogue can result in fruitful social and educational
W naszym zglobalizowanym świecie pojawia się coraz więcej przykładów wielojęzycznych i wielokulturowych szkół, w których oferowany jest bardziej złożony kontekst społeczny niż w monokulturowej instytucji. Dlatego też współpraca różnych partnerów jest organiczną częścią edukacji i odgrywa ważną rolę w takich warunkach pedagogicznych. W artykule przedstawiono badania dotyczące wielojęzyczności i wielokulturowości w przedszkolu z udziałem dzieci z rodzin cudzoziemców pracujących w lokalnej bazie lotniczej. Wysoce interdyscyplinarne badania mają na celu znalezienie odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jaki sposób nauczyciele przedszkolni, dzieci, rodzice i specjaliści edukacyjni mogą tworzyć wspólne językowe, kulturowe i pedagogiczne podstawy w tej bardzo złożonej sytuacji? W artykule przedstawiono najpierw kontekst badania, następnie za pomocą stosowanych metod badawczych skupiono się na wyzwaniach związanych z sytuacją i współpracą zaangażowanych stron. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań mogą pomóc w znalezieniu odpowiedzi na pytania pedagogiczne dotyczące języka, takie jak wzajemne relacje językowe, sposób manifestowania się różnych tożsamości kulturowych w warunkach instytucjonalnych, stosunek uczestników badania do edukacji wielojęzycznej i wielokulturowej we wczesnym dzieciństwie oraz jak dialog może prowadzić do owocnej współpracy edukacyjnej.
