Opis:
This article examines a key event in the literary history of the Acadian renaissance (1864-1930), the founding of newspapers. Our study deals specifically with the status given to literary works in newspapers. In sequence, we will look at Marichette's Lettres (1895-1898) published in L'Évangéline, the novel Placide, l'homme mystérieux by Paul (1904-906) published in L'Impartial and the play « Subercase » (1902, 1936) published in Le Moniteur acadien

Opis:
The study is an analysis and interpretation of a scene from Łukasz Górnicki’s tragedy Troas (1589), a translation of Seneca’s Troades. A comparison to the original as well as the description of changes introduced by the translator serve to capture a special phenomenon of emphasising the analogy between Ulysses’s and a diplomat’s activity. Starting with the main character’s first line, the words: “durae minister sortis” were translated as “Ja, co poselstwo niosę”. The analysis of this issue shows that the role of Ulysses (who does not negotiate with a representative of a sovereign country, but with a captive woman) cannot be equated with the role of an ambassador. Conversely, it combines in itself the features characteristic of diplomatic staff of various ranks, including characters operating on the edge of the law. The consilium ascribed to Ulysses enables to explore the secret of Andromacha by observing physical symptoms of emotions. This makes it possible for Górnicki to define the main character’s ingenuity as “dowcip odwrócony na nice” which, irrespective of Seneca’s original, refers to the terminology used earlier in Dworzanin polski, where dowcip (wit) is the equivalent of ingegno. Among the ethical elements of Ulysses’s speeches one should name, above all, his desire to convince Andromacha to accept the Greek’s line of argumentation. This, in turn, provides good framework for parallelism with the New Testament (Lk 2:35). The last part of the work, devoted to pathos, addresses the problem of a mismatch between the role of Ulysses and diplomacy codes in Górnicki’s times. The main character does not limit himself to conducting well thought-out negotiations, but he also uses direct violence. Similar dissonance in character construction seems to make the representation of diplomatic practices in Górnicki’s translation a problematic task, given the socio-political tensions in Europe in the second half of sixteenth century.

Opis:
This paper examines the importance of the Orpheus myth during the English Renaissance. The Orpheus myth was one of the most common mythic intertexts of the period due to the fact that we could see the very story of Orpheus as being imbedded within the idea of the Renaissance itself. The main ambition of the Renaissance humanist was to bring the literature of the ancients back to life via the means of education. In other words, they attempted to bring the dead back to life and Orpheus serves as an embodiment of this ambition due to his ability to bring inanimate objects to life and in his journey to the underworld to rescue Eurydice. We find many different aspects of the Orpheus myth dealt with in Renaissance writing, for example Orpheus as poet, Orpheus as lover and the death of Orpheus being some of the key focal points. This paper, however, will focus specifically on the role of Orpheus as Poet as, due to the Renaissance love for art, rhetoric and eloquence, this seems to be the most popular dimension of the Orpheus myth at that time. We will see how Renaissance writers reinterpret the story of Orpheus, as originally told by Ovid and Virgil, in the Metamorphoses and the Georgics respectively, to show Orpheus as not only as being an archetypal poet but in fact the very first poet whose art is not only responsible for the civilisation of man, but also for the creation of a “Golden Age” in Renaissance England.

Needless to say, medical topics have always aroused a great interest among various artists. What is more, a great number of art works has been preserved, which undoubtedly contributes to the enrichment of our knowledge about doctors working in the previous centuries. Moreover, in the Renaissance, one could easily notice the thriving development of paintings, presenting ordinary scenes from everyday life, which was started mainly by the Dutch. Furthermore, among frequent topics undertaken by famous artists we can diff erentiate the ones that presented surgeries and autopsies. In the given article we will discuss the paintings presenting the anatomy lessons by Pietersz, Pickenoy, van Mierveld, Rembrandt, and van Neck, since the analysis of given works provides a great source of information about the doctors living in these times.
Do częstych tematów malarskich sławnych mistrzów należały m.in. sceny rodzajowe przedstawiające zabiegi chirurgiczne czy sekcje. W pracy zostały omówione obrazy przedstawiające lekcje anatomii Pietersza, Pickenoya, van Miervelda, Rembrandta, van Necka. Analizując te dzieła wiele możemy się dowiedzieć o żyjących wówczas lekarzach.

According to the traditional view, the notion of imagination in early modern aesthetics was a rather marginal and subsidiary concept within the classical doctrine of mimesis dominated by rules and reason. The present paper raises some doubts about this well-established opinion. It argues that even if imagination in early modern aesthetics did not play as prominent role as in Romantic poetics, the concept had significant relevance. It presents one important episode from the Renaissance debate on imagination, which arose from the sixteenth century literary quarrel over the artistic quality and the uncertain genre of Dante’s Commedia. Its main distinctive category was “fantastic imitation” — a concept derived from Plato, yet misunderstood and thus transformed.

Opis:
The starting point for this study of the marriage according to Guazzo is the notion of conversation in its original meaning, as living together. The treaty of Guazzo (1574) develops the concept of « civil conversazione » in which men exchange their opinions, but especially support each other and show mutual respect and amiability, which avoids conflicts. The study shows the analogies between such ideal of communication and Guazzo’s vision of the marriage – both envisaged in the humanistic and Christian perspectives: as foundations of society and means of mutual edification. Guazzo’s discourse concerning conversation of the spouses oscillates between the necessity of accomodation to the spouse (related to concealment) and sincerity. Given the complexity of codes that characterize other types of communication, « marital conversazione » is presented as the closest to the ideal of transparency.

This article describes the impact of humoral theory and astrology on the description of human body in four types of temperaments (choleric, phlegmatic, sanguine and melancholic) in the Renaissance writings. The most important of them is an antique book entitled Introductiones apotelesmaticae in Chyromantiam, Physiognomiam, Astrologiam Naturalem complexiones hominum naturas planetarum  written by Johannes Indagine and printed in 1522. Other books from this period are: Enchiridion Physiognomiae co[m] pe[n]diosu[m]: cu[m] figuris facieru[m]  (1532) by Simonenide Louicz, Problemata Aristotelis. Gadki… o składności członk.w człowieczych  (1535) by Andrzej Glaber, Phisionomia hinc inde ex illustribus scriptoribus… recollecta (1518) by Johann von Glogau. The article describes the humoral theory of diseses, which roots were created by Hippocrates and Galen, and the doctrine of the four humors dominated Medieval and Renaissance medicine. This theory held that in the body there are four humors or bodily fluids (moists) held the secret to temperaments. These humors were: blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm. A proper domination of each fluid was a cause of characteristic patterns of appropriate temperament: melancholic, sanguine, choleric and phlegmatic. The theory of four temperaments was also intrinsically tied to astrology, beginning with a natal birth chart interpretations to the impact of diffrent planets (Zodiac) on the organs in human body. Astrology was also helpful in the interpretation of temperaments (personality types) with their connection to the picture of human face, which was analyzed by the medieval physiognomy and also to physical appearance: shape of the body, colour of the skin, musculature and hair. The article also describes the correlations connecting the theory of four humors with birth (natal) charts and looking which planet has the impact on each temperament and human body, with negative or positive domination of diffrent character qualities. And finally, there is a detailed reconstruction of physiognomic types of human types of four temperaments, based on the book from 1522 Introductiones apotelesmaticae in Chyromantiam, Physiognomiam, Astrologiam Naturalem complexiones hominum naturas planetarum  by Indagine. The author discusses a planet’s positions and conjunctions with other planets in horoscope and their impact on temperament, physical posture, character traits, with some medical comments.

Marsilio Ficino and Plato’s Charmides The following article, devoted to Ficino’s interpretation of Plato’s Charmides, consists of two parts. The first one is an introduction to Ficino’s comment. It brings up Ficino’s stylistics and the place of Charmides among the Plato’s dialogues. It seems that the decision to translate the works of Plato was not accidental. Th e philosopher’s views on governance perfectly justified the strong power of Cosimo de’ Medici in Florence. Poliziano praised his rule in his own preface to Charmides. Charmides, in turn, is an interesting dialogue because it was followed by Ficino’s censorship where the philosopher tackles Plato’s homoerotic fascinations. Th e translator, so honest and conscientious in other translations, this time decides to pare down the content of the dialogue. However, a comment written by him becomes a valuable compensation for these shortcomings. Ficino’s main philosophical notions (above all the prisca theologia doctrine) bloom in every passage of the paper. The author interweaves the wisdom of Arab mystics with the wisdom of ancient Greek mystics in order to reconcile these thoughts with the Christian revelation. Particularly interesting is the psychosomatic approach to human nature, that is the interdependence of the health of body and soul. As by the means of sophrosyne full harmony is to be discovered between them, we can even reach immortality. We are like Adam Kadmon, who, though imperfect, can improve his own and the world’s nature. The second part of the paper is a translation of Ficino’s synopsis of the dialogue, in which the author explains what can be understood under the term sophrosyne. Temperance needs to be instilled into a man’s mind early, as early as the patient is given medication. It should be given especially to young people, to those from noble families and to the beautiful. Physical beauty, in particular, hinders striking the right balance but, on the other hand, it can also stimulate insight into the beauty of the soul. The form allows us to explore the idea. When the violent desires are tamed, it is easier to balance all other activities. Th at is the reason why “moderation is best”, as Cleobulos of Lindos would say. When both the soul and body are healed, we achieve a harmonious consonance. In the spirit of this harmony, Pythagorean magical practices agree with the thoughts of Avicenna and Hippocrates’s medical practice to end up with the mysteries of Moses. That is what they have achieved – Enoch, Elijah and St. John the Evangelist. Enriched with necessary footnotes, the translation seems to represent an important example of Italian Renaissance interpretation of Platonic thought.

Opis:
The Anecdotes on Demosthenes – An IntroductionThe following article is devoted to anecdotes on Demosthenes and consists of two parts. The first one is an introduction to the anecdotes themselves. Starting with a short biography of the pre-eminent Greek speaker, it discusses the rest of the content of a manuscript which clearly shows awakened interest in Antiquity. Consequently, the biography itself becomes a subject. Later the reception of Diogenes Laertius’s Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers is briefly discussed, highlighting the influence and evolution of ancient authors and ancient thought on, among others, Poggio Bracciolini and Petrarch. Then the author some introductory remarks on Renaissance attempts to translate and exemplify a stylised biography of the philosopher in Polish tradition. One of these attempts was made by Filippo Buonaccorsi, called “Callimachus”, who composed the Life of Gregory of Sanok, the archbishop of Lviv. Finally, the author poses the question of why Demosthenes appeared as a character interesting both in terms of a biography and anecdotes. According to Turasiewicz, it seems that people were filled with the ideals of Athenian democracy and let themselves be somehow charmed by the eloquence of Demosthenes. This did not happen through flattery but through honesty and clarity of thought and due to the idea of a kind of sacrifice entailed in the orator’s speeches. An admiration for the speaker’s political views was reflected not only in a golden wreath but mainly in the silent approval of the struggle for political sovereignty at the expense of “money, pleasure and life.” The wise people of Athens accepted without objection reprimand and instructions uttered by the speaker, but they did it only because it was honest criticism supported by reasonable arguments. With the fall of Constantinople, the works of Demosthenes returned to Europe and thanks to Byzantine scholars he found Ostroróg, Georges Clemenceau, Friedrich Nietzsche – these are just a few of the important people who found themselves influenced by him.The introductory notes are followed by the second part of the paper, which consists of a translation of the anecdotes. Enriched with necessary footnotes, the translation attempts to provide an interesting insight into Demosthenes’ personality, since one might find there not only stories praising his qualities but also some anecdotes on his faults. All in all, the reader is left with a thorough, though not comprehensive, image of the famous Athenian orator.

Opis:
The décor of the Artus Court was the major artistic project prior to the legalizing of Protestantism in Gdansk. The rich programme combined the traditional Catholic topics, Antique motifs, and images testifying to the reception of Lutheranism. They were composed of the motifs related to the state, province, and the city, religion, civic responsibilities, as well as astrological subjects. Images containing astrological meanings constitute quite a substantial component of the décor. Their even arrangement in the interior turned them into an element integrating all the programme; additionally, astrological motifs appear in several separate enclaves in the décor (personifications of the seven planets of the cornice; the motifs on the capitals which refer to the relation between the universe and man as well as his environment; personifications of Moon and Venus located in the highest section of the stove; Sun and Moon in the late Gothic painting Ship of the Church; the impact of the various arrangements of the celestial bodies on the earth can be found in the late-Gothic painting Siege of Malbork as well as in Holofernes' Camp and the Siege of Malbork painted by Martin Schoninck). The presence of astrological images deeply rooted in the mediaeval tradition in the interior whose décor conveyed basically Lutheran thought, gives rise to the question to what extent Lutherans were ready to accept topics whose connotations referred to a suspicious, frequently condemned, but generally cultivated knowledge, to numerous abuses, and to what degree they filled them with new meanings. The reformers' attitude to astrology was not unanimous. Martin Luther did not favour it, meanwhile Philipp Melanchthon, friends with Luther, was of a different opinion with regard to astrology. He was not only a leading figure among the reformers, but also an outstanding personality at Wittenberg University. His assumption was that man being a creation of nature must be subject to the impact of stars which in their turn are subdued to God. As a reformer of the Church he followed the Holy Scriptures, as a reformer of astrology, in turn, he based himself on Ptolemy, while also drawing from Aristotle. At Wittenberg University he attracted quite a number of humanists, doctors, mathematicians, and astronomers who dealt with astrology. He himself and his followers agreed that only a pious scholar was able to read the heavenly signs and comprehend divine providence by means of astrology. The Wittenberg climate favourable to astrology may have affected Gdansk. The bonds between the two cities were quite close and many Gdansk residents, as well as individuals who were to settle later in Gdansk, such as the Protestant preachers.

Ostatnia część, poświęcona pathos, podejmuje problem nieprzystawalności roli Ulissesa do kodów dyplomacji epoki Górnickiego. Podobna niespójność kreacji postaci wydaje się wpisywać problematyczną reprezentację praktyk dyplomacji w przekładzie Górnickiego w polityczne i społeczne napięcia drugiej połowy XVI w.
Similar dissonance in character construction seems to make the representation of diplomatic practices in Górnicki’s translation a problematic task, given the socio-political tensions in Europe in the second half of 16th century.

The process of mythologization of avifauna has been analyzed in order to study the relation between man and nature, and more precisely, between the Renaissance humanism and natural sciences. One issue is puzzling in this field – why did educated and well-read humanists mythologize nature, including the avifauna? Why did authors, for whom in principle criticism was an elementary indicator for perceiving reality, got rid of it so easily? 16th century authors with humanist education did not reconstruct nature but art, and they searched for its ideal in ancient works filled with mythologization of the nature. Humanist erudition required describing mythical animals and equally mythical symbolic of those animals. In this way one could prove that he knew ancient texts well. Reconstruction of such nature as it really existed was an attitude that was unworthy of a humanist artist. Hence the store of knowledge and ignorance that existed in those times was translated into a particular, often mythologized, text written by a Renaissance author.

The article offers insights on the reception and cultural transmission of one of the most important Renaissance texts entitled De Europa written by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, an Italian scholar (he became Pope Pius II in 1458). His work was adopted and adapted by the Polish scholar Jan of Stobnica. In his dissertation Introductio in Ptolemaei cosmographiam cum longitudinibus et latitudinibus regionum et civitatum celebriorum, he took up all issues of Piccolomini`s treatise, including geographical and historical aspects of Greece. His attitude to this material was very positive. The article considers the motifs of Greek districts, such as Macedonia, Thessaly, Boeotia, Attica, the Peloponnese, the Isthmus, Achaea, Acarnania, Epirus, and the significance of Greece for Polish Renaissance culture.

The medieval parish church in Szadek, dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary and St James the Apostle, is the town’s oldest historical monument and its most valuable relic of the past splendour. Restoration of its elevations has been in progress for several years. Renovation work has been completed on the walls of the presbytery and the northern elevation of the church with its annexes, i.e. sacristy, treasury and chapel under the invocation of Our Lady of the Rosary. The conservation and research work resulted in restoring the long-forgotten splendour of the church and in a number of important discoveries. It was found that in the first half of the 14th century a two-bay presbytery was built as well as a sacristy and an adjoining room intended for a treasury. In the next stage of construction work a threeaisle pseudo-basilica church was built, to be given a new form a hundred years later. The most spectacular discovery was identification of the original architectural design of the Renaissance chapel from the mid-16th century, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary.

The article presents the relationship between one of the main representatives of Italian humanism – Pietro Bembo – with Poles. The most important aspect was his friendship with Klemens Janicki who studied in Padua in 1538–1540. His works are a testimony of contacts he had established when in Italy. Bembo was mentioned in Janicki’s works (Variae Elegiae IX,Epigrammata LII). Another element connecting the Italian with Poles were congratulatory letters on his cardinal appointment. The newly-appointed cardinal was congratulated by king Sigismund the Old via enigmatic figures of Jan Wincenty Dulcis de Lasco and Piotr Kmita.A trace of Bembo’s contact with Poles is also the formal correspondence of his while being the secretary of Pope Leo X.

The title Korwin’s take on Ovid hints at the actual and real potential of his heritage that is both a fixed, poetic base shared by Korwin since his study at the Cracow Academy as well as a body of references constantly being reinterpreted in response to astronomical and geographical challenges of the work of the Polish writer. The reader is given an insight into the processes shaping Korwin’s borrowings from Ovid and the importance of Cosmographia to the Polish Renaissance culture.

De Montaigne’s Essays, or the apology of private life: The paper presents Michel de Montaigne’s Essays as an apology of his life on the margin of society. Montaigne lives at the time of a civil war in which he refuses to take sides; accordingly, the only thing that he absolutely expects from national government is for it to guarantee peace in the realm. His expectations of the institutional Church are similarly minimalist. Universally respected laws should safeguard public order; all those who invoke philosophical wisdom or religious revelation do is destroy that order. The truly wise ancient philosophers lived outside the polis, aware that it is not reason but common sense that forms its foundation. Having no competences to run a polity, the philosopher has no particular obligations toward it, either. And yet, even with his sceptical philosophy and egocentric personality, Montaigne does not shut himself in an ivory tower, but merely protects his privacy, the right to devote his time to himself. As any philosopher, he highly treasures friendship, which he regards as an intimate relationship, a communion of two souls merged into one. Nonetheless, he needs other people, too, even if it is only to share his thoughts with them: he needs their judgment on his own reflection. He presents this reflection in the Essays in a novel way, drawing the attention to himself, something for which he does not intend to explain himself. For he regards stupidity, including his own stupidity, as a natural human vice; his essays are designed to protect him against it, and him alone, as he will not embark on a crusade against stupidity of others. He does not make his life part of any great narrative: he lives for himself, but he does not argue that the readers of the Essays should imitate him in that. For Montaigne consistently avoids any kind of categorical moralising or viewing human life in terms of obligations.

With the development of the civilization and the need to ensure safety for the next generation and cultural material, it became more and more vital to provide defence in case of danger. That is why, the character of residential space and historical architecture was influenced by the conflicts, which had various forms. Aside from the buildings, which were fulfilling visible and explicitly defined military function like e.g. fortresses or defence walls, there were also others that have been subjected to the process of incastellation to respond to the needs of the society. Giving the defensive character to the buildings that had originally completely different purpose, especially religious, had been developed since the Roman times. Military art was purely functional at the beginning. Later it was intertwined with decorations and other architectonic elements that were occurring e.g. in churches and conventual complexes. The aim of this article is to analyse the expression of the late Renaissance architecture with the elements of military art (ars militaris) in the discussed church, the Loreto Chapel and the wall, which together constitute the religious complex of St. Florian and St. Catherine in Gołąb in Lublin Voivodeship. Referring to functional and architectural-construction solutions of the subject of our research, the author discusses the topic of giving defensive character to religious buildings while keeping their functional layout, decorativeness and rich architectural expression typical for the architecture of the Lublin Renaissance.

The purpose of this paper is to present the role of Charlemagne (768−814), King of the Franks and Emperor of the Romans (from 800) in the process of recovering the school organisation that was considerably weakened in the period from the 5th to the 7th century as well as the participation of the ruler in the reforms of education, science and the school system, referred to as the Carolingian Renaissance. In his reforms of the legal system, the monetary system, administration and education, Charles consistently implemented the political program announced in the Act of 789. The emperor’s actions reveal a clearly utilitarian goal. The command of Latin and the introduction of readable writing enabled the clergy to better understand the words of the Holy Scripture and, in turn, increased the general level of religious education among believers. The numerous scriptoria across the empire contributed to the ongoing work on defining the uniform text of all the books. The rebirth of Latin was driven by the works of the late Roman grammarians, Donatus and Priscian, and many works by ancient authors were also copied in scriptoria.

The purpose of the study was to analyze the role of the Renaissance in Poland and the way it is reflected in tourists’ reviews. The authors focused in particular on tourists’ awareness concerning the importance of three major Renaissance landmarks located in three Polish cities, namely the Wawel Royal Castle in Cracow, the Town Hall in Poznań and the Old Town in Zamość. Methods used in the empirical part include an analysis of reviews posted on the TripAdvisor website by Polish tourists who have visited these sites, taking into account the historical conditions underlying the development of the Renaissance in Poland and its characteristic features. The authors used the desk research method. The pilot study described in the article is an introduction to further, in-depth qualitative research. The results indicate that only 10% of all tourists’ reviews referred to the Renaissance character of the sites. The reviews indicate that most tourists lack a solid knowledge of history and architecture, and were most likely not inspired to visit the analyzed sites because of their links to the Renaissance. No reviews were found demonstrating any personal background in history or suggesting that the Renaissance was the reason for visiting these particular sites. So far, references to the Renaissance in tourists’ reviews of Polish landmarks have not been discussed in the literature. The article can, therefore, be regarded as a first contribution to the study of this issue.

Marcellus Palingenius Stellatus’ Zodiacus vitae was one of the biggest editorial sensations of the sixteenth century, despite which its popularity in the Renaissance has not yet been the subject of a comprehensive study. The aim of this article is to partially fill that gap by addressing the circulation of the work in sixteenth-century Poland, where the first adaptation of the text into a language other than Latin was produced by the poet Mikołaj Rej. Indeed, several other illustrious exponents of Polish Renaissance culture were also interested in the Zodiacus and we can find references to it in both poetic works and in philosophical treatises. The particular political and social organisation of Poland at the time, and its intensive contacts with Italian and German universities, make it an excellent field of investigation for an understanding of the impact of the Zodiacus between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth.

Opis:
The aim of the present paper is to place Guillaume Budé’s De Transitu Hellenismi ad Christianismum in relation to a paradox, a typical phenomenon in Renaissance culture. There are two different types of paradox: a rhetorical one, which is just an amusing intellectual play, and an existential one, which points at the contradictions of human condition. Budé is interested in the latter. In his work he deals with a paradoxical situation of the Christianity in 16th century France: a divergence between the knowledge of the Christian doctrine and its presence in the everyday life. This state is due to the influence exercised on the human soul by “the world” which weakens the faith. Budé points out that everyone can understand this by oneself on condition that one reflects on this problem in one’s mind. The mental activity lets a man resolve his nature’s paradoxes.

At the dawn of the sixteenth century portrait medals counted among the most orginal forms of representation which providing plenty of information on represented individual and accumulating it in a small, durable, mobile and easily reproducible object, met the Renaissance demand of fame and immortality. Advantages of this medium have been noticed in the courtly circle of king of Poland Sigismund I the Old (r. 1507–1548) thus leading to creation of several series of medals cast and strack in various metals in the second and third decade of the sixteenth century. The paper discusses authorship of these medals, as well as circumstances of their production and the role they could have played in the propaganda of Sigismund I’s power.

The article deals with the issue of the perception of small Polish towns by authors of literary works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Due to the fact that this type of settlements prevailed in the urban landscape of our country, it is interesting whether the authors gave them any attention and, if so, what problems of the towns were raised. The analysis shows that this topic was marginally discussed. Towns in general, even the largest ones, did not enjoy any particular interest of artists. Small towns, however, most often appear as a collective entity. What drew artists’ attention were wooden buildings, which often constitute the towns’ weakness. The authors devote a little more attention to urban craftsmen, having the worst opinion about them. However, these are essentially the views of the nobility, thus show its negative attitude towards towns and townspeople.

The Arabic world is proud of its past and grandeur of former times dating to the pre-islam period and the era of the rise of Islam. The article is an attempt to describe the theme of glory in the Arab literature of the renaissance concerning this region from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. During this time a new Arabic literature developed and it included the so-called poetry of traditional current and drama as an innovatory literary form called neoclassicism, which had not previously existed. Both genres referred to the brilliant past of Arabia and the Muslim civilization, encouraging Arabs to embrace its revival. These genres were basing on the motif of majd – ‘glory’, ‘praise’, ‘fame’. The poetry included, first of all, panegyrics and poems expressing a longing for previous glory while neoclassic dramatists presented the same theme with examples of ancient communities, tribal legends and the history of the Arabic-Muslim Caliphate. The article aims to show the literary pictures of Arabic grandeur and glory outlined by the renaissance writers. With reference to the changes in literature, the paper argues that since the 1950s, poetry and drama writers have rejected the concept of a glorious past and criticized the dreadful and inglorious moments in the history of Arab regions.

The author suggests that the intellectual life of Étienne Gilson constituted a new humanism, that Gilson’s scholarly work was part of a new renaissance, that a new humanism that Gilson thought is demanded by the precarious civilizational crisis of the modern West after World Wars I and II. He also argues that, more than anything else, Gilson was a renaissance humanist scholar who consciously worked in the tradition of renaissance humanists before him, but did so to expand our understanding of the notion of “renaissance” scholarship and to create his own brand of Christian humanism to deal with problems distinctive to his age. The author shows the specificity of the Christian humanism that Gilson developed as part of his distinctive style of doing historical research and of philosophizing.

What kind of causality does the Aristotelian Prime Mover exert on the heaven? Who “loves” the Prime Mover? Renaissance peripatetic philosopher, Francesco Vimercato, a “royal” teacher of “Greek and Latin philosophy” in Paris during the forties and the fifties of the 16th century tried to resolve these traditional puzzles that resulted from the exegesis of the Metaphysics XII, 6–7. His solution appears to be innovative, if compared to the ancient and the medieval ones. It seems partially to prefigure the last two decades’ interpretations of Aristotelian “theology”.

The article is a contribution to the exploration of history of Polish musical culture of the Renaissance and the Baroque period. Recognition of elementary forms of social organisation leads to understanding of the prevailing social and economical relations in those times. This article is one of the first in this topic, therefore it starts with very basic issues. A musicians guild existed in Cracow from 16th to 18th century. The article presents its history and organisation on the basis of statutes and municipal documents analysis. Simultaneously, it raises questions about circumstances of its creation and termination, welded duties and repertoire. The author questions the character of discussed association, considering to what extent it was a guild and a confraternity. The aim of the publication is to present to the reader a coherent picture of the guild, which could provide a starting point for further research.

The article explores Stanisław Grzepski’s workshop of biblical exegesis and his hermeneutics. By analyzing his analysis of the system of biblical measurements and his views on the concept of the year in the Jewish-biblical world – as derived and reconstructed on the basis of textual comparison of the Hebrew, Greek and Latin versions of the Scripture, along with thorough mathematical calculations – one can perceive Grzepski’s approach to the Bible. His hermeneutics, seen against the background of the presuppositions of medieval and Renaissance exegesis, allow the author of the article to draw certain conclusions concerning the threats that also modern exegesis should be cautious of.

The above short analysis of scientific and medical, medicine and didactic treaties of the age of Renaissance allows us to present numerous motifs linked to health and physical fitness, which were in the realm of interest of Polish authors. Not all their statements were original, many notions  were taken from ancient scholars. Nevertheless, Polish Renaissance writers undertook the challenge of independent deliberations over the matter of health, formulating- also in a naive way- many faulty theories. These achievements are worth acknowledging. The scholars mentioned in the above article were in many cases forerunners and originators of certain proceedings which undoubtedly in their times were innovative and ground-breaking.

W artykule przedstawiono projekt syntezy neopatrystycznej wybitnego rosyjskiego myśliciela, o.
In this article I present the project of Neo-patristic synthesis of the prominent Russian thinker, Fr. George Florovsky, as well as the main reasons for which he criticized the previous style and direction of development of Russian thought in the shape of Religious-philosophical Renaissance or “the Silver Age.” Polemizing with the approach of Florovsky, I put forward four remarks. First, Florovsky himself was under the influence of the Russian Religious-philosophical Renaissance. Second, it was not Florovsky who initiated the Patristic studies in Russia since they had been conducted from the 18th century. Third, Neo–patristic synthesis and philosophy of “the Silver Age” could been perceived as the complementary projects rather than the opposite stature. Fourth, Florovsky left his own postulate uncompleted. In the concluding part of the article I also compare the approaches of Florovsky and Zenkovsky arguing in favour of the latest thinker.

In the latter work, the quotations taken from the first work on marriage in the Polish language are intertwined with excepts from Żywot człowieka poczciwego [Life of an Honest Man] by Mikołaj Rej (1505–1569). As an author of the sermon in question prepared for the occasion of Stanisław Piotrowski’s betrothal, Wereszczyński rarely utilised the excerpts from Mrowiński’s treatise mechanically. He rather tends to abbreviate the fragments of Stadło małżeńskie, translocate them, develop on their pattern, and device substitution (e.g. by replacing biblical quotes with proverbs). It has to be emphasized that the Catholic preacher shared Mrowiński’s conviction regarding the voluntariness of entering into marriage, which ought to be based on mutual love.

Archaeological research on mediaeval and modern Chełm has been carried out for more than 100 years, but some particularly important information has been recovered in the last decade. Excavations have been carried out on the Cathedral mound, and likewise on the Old City on the settlement stretching from the 13th to the 20th century. In the year 2009 research was carried out in E. Łuczkowskiego Square, on the building which was the old Town Hall, whose beginnings stretch back to the 14th century or at least the beginning of the 15th. In one of the trenches two iron hackbuts were discovered. They were a type of hand-held firearm, in which the barrel was equipped with a vertical hook running downwards. They were used for the defence of town or castle walls. The archaeological context of the finds, as well as the diagnostic features of the hackbuts, point to a date in the 16th century, most probably in the first half. Considering the use to which these weapons report, however, they could have remained in use longer, until the 17th century. The find of the Chełm hackbuts allow us to compare them with other examples found in Central Europe.
